A Sunset Makes for Such a Beautiful Thing (Jasper National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A Sunset Makes for Such a Beautiful Thing Daylight had guided our way But now darkness comes in only a short time We all get to experienced the closing of a day And I tried to make the most of today I definitely look forward to tomorrow So no matter where I am on this planet Earth There’s always a book end for the day Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one early evening as the sun was setting in Jasper National Park. This was at a roadside pullout along the Maligne Lake Rd with a view looking to the northwest. My thought on composing this image was to create a layered look with the nearby, hillsides and then more distant mountains of Pyramid Mountain and the Victoria Cross Range. The rest was metering the image to not blow any highlights from the areas caught in sunlight, while still being able to later pull out the more shadowed areas nearby in post production. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 6 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

Lucky Shots

We captured lightning strikes in two photos from our Mavic 3 CINE, entirely by chance! We weren’t trying to get a picture of lightning, but just so happened to shoot these images at the exact moment of a lighting strike.

Didn’t even realize we’d caught lightning strikes until the photos were transferred onto the computer and were being reviewed.

Navigating Wall Street in Bryce Canyon National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Wall Street portion of the Navajo Loop with a view looking to the north. The very tall walls around were what I wanted to capture with this image and used a portrait orientation to help bring out the sheer size around me. I felt that including some steps to my front would add a sense of perspective to the height of the walls. The next thing on my mind was what I perceived as a large dynamic range between the brighter areas at the top of the wall and image with the more shadowed areas below. I metered for the brighter areas because of that. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image. It was as I began working on the image in post production that I then decided to once again try out the sky replacement setting in Photoshop with this image. I wasn’t quite happy with the look of the skies (some blotches and not a true blue color), so I replaced that with a stock images in Photoshop but all else is captured with my Nikon D850 SLR camera.

Here’s a few aerial HDR photos from Fort Valley, Georgia, captured in the evening time around sunset. We captured these photos as RAW 5-shot AEB bursts using our DJI Mavic 3 CINE drone.

Each of these photos were made from merging five images of the same scene shot at different EV offsets. The RAW AEB shots were processed into an HDR image and retouched using the HDR-focused software Aurora HDR.

Instead, this will be our subjective look at what this piece of software can do, what it does well and where it might still need to improve.Īfter installing the software (we already had one major update by the way which is nice), you can either drag images onto the software or open it and choose images to open and create an HDR. This isn’t going to be a full tutorial or anything of that sort – Macphun (or actually SKYLUM now) has many great educational videos on their site which you might want to check out if this is what you are looking for. Let’s start by taking a look at the interface of the Aurora HDR software. The new Aurora HDR 2018 version is the first MAC and PC iteration of the software and it brings quite a few updates and improvements as well. Macphun, the company that makes the Aurora HDR and dozens of other photography related applications and software, was founded by two college students almost 10 years ago and for years it was mostly known for creating all sorts of award-winning Mac and iOS apps and software.Īurora HDR is part of a big move by the company to create a larger user base with PC software as well which made the company change its name and it will now be called SKYLUM.
