Buying a house is a congratulatory move. Full of joy if you make such a big purchase. However, when it comes to practicality, things can be different.

The Best News of Last Week - January 15, 2024
🎊 - As we embark on another journey around the sun, I am thrilled to bring you the first newsletter of the year, packed with inspiring, informative, and sometimes downright amusing stories.
1. Marijuana meets criteria for reclassification as lower-risk drug
Tumblr media
Marijuana has a lower potential for abuse than other drugs that are subjected to the same restrictions, with scientific support for its use as a medical treatment, researchers from the US Food and Drug Administration say in documents supporting its reclassification as a Schedule III substance.
2. South Korea passes law banning dog meat trade
Tumblr media
The slaughter and sale of dogs for their meat is to become illegal in South Korea after MPs backed a new law. The legislation, set to come into force by 2027, aims to end the centuries-old practice of humans eating dog meat.
3. After 20 years in a tiny cage, these 'broken bears' are finally feeling the grass beneath their paws
Tumblr media
These bears, termed "broken bears" due to physical and psychological trauma from years of abuse, are treated at the Tam Dao rescue center with individually tailored diets, physiotherapy, and medical care. The bear bile trade, which involves extracting bile for traditional Asian medicine, has been illegal in Vietnam since 2005, but a black market still exists.
4. France just got its first openly gay prime minister.
Tumblr media
Gabriel Attal is France’s youngest-ever prime minister at age 34 and the first who is openly gay.
5. Australian ‘builders without borders’ repairing war-torn homes and schools in Ukraine
Tumblr media
Manfred Hin, a 66-year-old builder from Townsville, Australia, spent most of 2023 volunteering in Ukraine to rebuild homes and schools damaged by Russian attacks. Having contributed to over 50 house and a dozen school renovations, he worked with Ukrainian charity Brave to Rebuild, mentoring young volunteers and sourcing three tonnes of donated tools.
Inspired by Hin's story, Tasmanian carpenter Hamish Stirling also joined the efforts, learning Ukrainian, traveling to Europe, and volunteering for three months to help rebuild homes.
6. The age-standardized death rate from cancer has declined by 15% since 1990
Tumblr media
The age-standardized death rate from cancer declined by 15%
Cancer kills mostly older people – as the death rate by age shows, of those who are 70 years and older, 1% die from cancer every year. For people who are younger than 50, the cancer death rate is more than 40-times lower (more detail here).
7. Germany Reached 55% Renewable Energy in 2023
Tumblr media
In 2023, 55 percent of Germany’s power came from renewables — an increase of 6.6 percent, according to energy regulator Bundesnetzagentur, reported Reuters. Europe’s biggest national economy has a goal of 80 percent green energy by 2030.

Full Robert Sean Leonard 'House'-a-palooza Interview: "As we know, I’m straight, but yeah, it’s like, homina homina homina."
May 01 2006 | By Maureen Ryan
Do you watch the show much?
"I can't watch it. I mean, Hugh doesn't watch it because he's anal and … eight years old. [laughs] And by the way, I don’t buy it, I think he does watch it.
“I watched in the first year. We live in New York and [my fiancé] was in California] and she likes it because I’m on it. But then she left, she had to come back to New York, and what are you going to do? The idea of me watching myself on TV, alone in Santa Monica, was just about... just short of, like, a bottle of Maker’s Mark and a shotgun away from shooting myself. [much laughter]  So I haven’t watched it all season. But when I have watched it, I’ve been mildly confused and Hugh is appropriately grumpy."
I have this theory that a lot of my favorite shows aren’t even about what they’re supposed to be about -- they have to be set in a hospital or police station or outer space or whatever because the network can market that, but they’re secretly not even about that. Like, “House” is really about ethics and morality.
“Yeah, sure, I think that’s true.”
But you can’t pitch that show to the network. “Hey, we have this great show that examines personal morality!"
“‘It’s based on “A View from the Bridge.”’
Right! They’re really going to for that.
“Yeah. [laughs] I think it’s good, and when it’s right, when the show works, the mystery works. It has a Sherlock Holmes-ian feel to it, and you do kind of want to know what’s wrong with [the patients]. And it is interesting, the turns and twists that get you there. And there’s always a little bit of character-driven fun stuff in between, of who these people are and how they affect each other. And that’s it at its best. And I guess that could be true of any show.
“It’s tricky, you’ve got a lead character [who’s different from the TV norm] and you’ve got to be careful because those characters can be one-note. He’s the cranky guy, he’s the Australian guy, I’m the friend in one or two scenes a week. You just have to be careful, and I think we are, we have a really great team of writers. And the numbers are building, people are watching.”
So this two-parter on May 2 and 3, I think the unofficial subtitle is the “Festival of Foreman.” I guess they’re his Emmy episodes, and that’s fine. But you’re hardly in them, what’s up with that?
“Honestly, I’m okay. I don’t want an Emmy. This is what I want -- I know exactly what I want. I did play with a guy named Skip Sudduth, ‘The Iceman Cometh,’ seven years ago. I saw him five years later, and I said, ‘Geez, Skip, where have you been? I don’t see you at readings anymore.’ He said, ‘I’ve been on “Third Watch.”’ It sounded familiar but I’d never seen it. He said, ‘I’ve been doing it for five years.’ I said, ‘Holy crap!’ And he was back doing theater. That’s my dream.
“And it’s happening. I walk down the street and people say, ‘Where are you?’ and I say, ‘I’m on this show called “House.”’ My friend Lewis Black [from 'The Daily Show'] said, ‘What is it called? “Head”?’
“I’m okay. I’ve never been happier than where my career is now. And I don’t want it to change necessarily. Money’s good, and I’m glad I’m getting that, and I’m putting it away for later in life when I do more Tom Stoppard plays at Lincoln Center and make no money. But really, I’m great. I don’t mind working two days a week.
“Because those other guys, the Scooby gang, or the Mod Squad -- they are at that studio for 16 hours a day saying ‘tachycardia, lupus, blablahdeblah.’ Honestly, I’d kill myself if  had to do those scenes for that long. I’m very happy with the size of my role, I don’t want it to get any bigger. I’m happy.”
So we won’t see the very special “House” episode where Dr. Wilson almost dies?
“That might be how I get off the show.” [laughs]
Well, you could die and come back as a ghost. Then it would be the “House Whisperer.”
“Yeah [laughs]. The hair makeup people were saying one day, ‘Oh, I love those scenes with you and Hugh, there should be more of that.’ And I’m like, ‘Shhh! Don’t say that!’ I’m the luckiest man in Hollywood. I work only with Hugh, pretty much, who’s great. And I work two days a week.”
Do you fly back and forth to New York then?
"No, not really. They don’t let me because they need me around, the schedule changes so much. I’m going to try to get away with that a little more [in the upcoming season]. Now that [my fiancé] is here, I really will kill myself if I’m out there as much as I was last year, without her.”
So five days a week you’re doing what – Botox injections? Going to the mall? Watching “Maury”?
“Rob Lowe once said the secret to being an actor in L.A. is sleeping as late as you possibly can and going to be as early as possible. I remember him saying, ‘I recommend pajamas by 4:30 p.m.’”
What’s interesting about this show is that they’re taken something that could be a very formulaic procedural and quite often turn it on its head.
“I didn’t know anything about TV, I’d never done [a TV show], but I now know very well that there are procedurals and character-driven shows. ‘Law & Order’ is a procedural and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is a character-driven show. The test [as to which category a show is in], someone once said to me, which I thought was hysterical, is this question: Did Sam Waterston sleep with [the assistant DA] on ‘Law & Order’? If the answer is ‘I don’t give a [hoot], I want to know the next element of the case,’ then it’s a procedural.
“Our show is weirdly, and there must be precedent for this, but it’s weirdly equally both. I think it’s very much a procedural, and without that sick patient every week, we wouldn’t work. And without the character stuff it wouldn’t work. And weirdly, people do care if House sleeps with one of our characters, and also care equally what’s wrong with this person and how they’re going to solve the case.”
I guess I like the character stuff better, but you’re right, it probably wouldn’t work without the suspense of the weekly case and somebody being critically ill.
“No, I think you need that. I think the echoes of Sherlock Holmes are too strong. The original idea of the show was House and Wilson, like Holmes and Watson. But it got away from that, and his team is Watson, if you want to be technical about it.
“I’m more like … the only way I’ve found to define it, and it’s so pretentious that it makes me want to jump out a window, is like King Lear’s fool. I’m like the only one who tells him the truth. And [Wilson] has nothing to lose. I don’t work for him and he doesn’t work for me. I’m the only character who chooses to be with him as opposed to being there because of a job. And because of that I have the freedom to tell him what I think. Not that Cuddy holds back much.”
I think her role is to say, "No! Bad House!"
“Have you talked to Lisa Edelstein [who plays Cuddy]? She’s so great. This Japanese woman once said to her, ‘You on “ER”!’ And she said, ‘I have been on “ER,” but now I’m on “House.”’ And [the woman says] ‘Oh yes, “House.” You say, “No, you don’t!”’ Every time we do the table read, I burst into laughter at some point, because there is the voice of that woman in my head, ‘You say “No, you don’t!”’ That’s the entire definition of Lisa’s character. Not completely, but we laugh [about it]. We have the same dilemma. We’re on this show that we’re … kind of on. Crew members say, ‘How long have you been on the show?’ ‘Uh, since the pilot.’ They really don’t know what we’re doing there.”
So in terms of the other stuff going on in your career, that’s going well, all the theater stuff?
“I’ve achieved everything I wanted to do. When I was growing up, I wanted to be Kevin Kline, Sam Waterston. I grew up watching the Public Theater and Shakespeare in the park and Marion Seldes. I mean, I may as well be gay.”
I’m not entirely sure you’re not.
[laughs] “But the thing is, I got it [i.e. his goals]. I’ve done 14 Broadway shows and got a Tony award, and now I’m making money and no one even really knows. I’m getting away with murder. If I come back to New York in two years and nothing’s changed, I’ll be thrilled. All I really want to do is [act in] plays, play with my dog, have kids. My desires are pretty simple. I don’t really want to do movies anymore. I’m pretty tired of camera acting.”
Why are you tired of camera acting? Is it the repetition of it?
“No, no, quite the opposite. We don’t rehearse enough. We do scenes where people barely know their lines, where people just about know their lines. In theater, you do it so many times and you get so familiar that then you can actually start having fun with it. And I really miss that feeling.
“It’s true of films too. I don’t know. I think I’m fine on film, but … I have walked offstage and thought, ‘Wow, no one has done that better. People may have done it as well, but not better.' I’ve actually had that feeling after ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night,’ or a Shaw play or whatever. I’ve never felt that way with film. I always feel like, ‘Boy, Donald Sutherland would have done that a lot better.’ [laughs] I just don’t think it’s what I do best. I think I’m fine, but there are people who are eerily good at it. In all humility, of which I have none [laughs], that’s how I feel about my work on stage. I really do feel that I’m gifted at it.”
Just to change gears completely, what happens in the finale?
“Well, I think the finale is a bit of a cliffhanger. Something very exciting happens. It’s extremely exciting and freaky and I think it’s great. I can’t say what it is. You end this season very curious about how the next season is going to start. It’s a great final show and a big cliffhanger.”
So it seems like Hugh Laurie is so disparaging of his own talents. But he’s so good as House.
“Some people ask me, ‘Oh, why does Wilson want to hang out with House so much?’ and I’m like, ‘You idiot.’ [laughs] House is designed to be attractive! He’s brilliant, he’s self-deprecating, he has a limp. But yeah, Hugh hates himself and he’s very funny about it.  There’s no better combination in my book. Like Lewis Black.”
But as an acting partner, he’s good to work with?
“Oh yeah. The thing is, with this part, Hugh has a huge obstacle he has to deal with, having an American accent. His problem isn’t our problem. We as the audience don’t have that problem, because what he doesn’t know is that he does it perfectly. But of course he doesn’t hear that. That’s why he can’t watch the show.
“When you’re doing an accent, you don’t feel like you’re interesting in the role. Even if everyone around is telling you that you are. And to be in a play is one thing, but to be on TV show that runs for years, I don’t know how he’s going to do it. To be that hard on yourself and be that disappointed in your own work. But as I said, and underline this four times, he’s wrong.”
And then he obviously hates when anyone calls him a sex symbol. You read his quotes when people ask him about that stuff and you can feel the embarrassment rising off the page.
“Yeah, he hates that stuff. And even more than the ‘sexy’ stuff, he hates the ‘you’re brilliant’ stuff. Of course there’s a part of him that likes him, there’s a part of all of us that likes that. [But him being hard on his performance], it’s not false vanity.
“I think Hugh does work he’s proud of and does work he thinks is good, I’m just not sure it’ll ever be this [show]. Having an accent… acting is letting go and forgetting yourself, it’s the opposite of ego. It’s flying away and getting away from yourself and forgetting. And when you’re doing an accent, it’s virtually impossible to do that.
“It’s hard when you're in a play, doing the same lines, the same way for eight months. Hugh learns 72 new lines a day and has to put an American accent on them. It really is an actor’s nightmare. I’ve done [with accents] Brian Friel plays, Martin Sherman plays, Tom Stoppard plays, and maybe five months into it you have a night where you kind of feel OK and kind of forget the accent and let go and let the scene happen. To have a strange accent in your mouth while playing a role, and then be judged for it, that’s hard stuff.
“And can I tell you, when you have dinner with Hugh Laurie [speaking in his real accent]… I miss that voice.”
Yeah. He called me once directly for an interview. I was expecting the publicist to put him through, but it was just that voice on the phone. I was sort of thrown for a minute.
“As we know, I’m straight, but yeah, it’s like, homina homina homina.” [laughs]
---- [source (part 2)] | part 1 | part 3 ---
it took me two hours to track this interview down. it might be the longest one he's ever done. first i tracked it down to tumblr pages posting about it with no source please stop doing that. then i found a short youtube video of laurie saying "homina homina" on an snl skit i think and someone in the comments mentioned the site where the rsl interview was posted. however the site wouldn't let me in, i guess they took it down so i headed to archive dot org. i didn't have a specific link though so that didn't really work out either. then for nearly an hour i tried a wide range of word combinations on google until i stumbled upon a livejournal page of rpf hugh laurie/rsl fanfic. SOMEONE tysm karaokegal posted the exact link i was looking for in the comments. quick trip to the wayback machine and here you go!
i should be on those ethical hacking competition things

will not shut up about how bluey's 30 min episode gave us so much more lore and references to the real world
the writes really made so much literal and euphemistic use of the word "sign" in this episode
in chronological order! and spoilers below!!
do let me know if I missed anything out!
FRISKY AND RAD'S WEDDING!!!! in the iconic heeler house!!
bandit's bully bucky dunstan being the real estate agent selling his house
English sheepdog buying the bluey house (emigration - would be nicer if they got english voice actors to voice them though)
the bluey house was actually for sale on an Australian real estate website! and as per the time of writing this post, it's been "withdrawn from sale" - the bluey digital marketing team AMAZES ME.
I wonder which city bandit got a new job in - don't know if they'll explore that in future seasons
bluey's friend the brown dog (I'm sorry I don't know his name) having 2 mums!
winton talking about his divorced parents and the terriers' saying their mom likes winton's dad!!!
jack and his army interest! him and rusty playing army!!
the sitting in a tree, kissing thing that kids do
Jeremy the gnome
bobo being the car's name
frisky's licence plate being fr15k
the first time kids sit in the front seat of the car
police officers pulling people on the road over LMAO
rad's profile picture being him goofing around with his 2 brothers
how realistic it is trying not to lose someone you're following on the road
the butterfly from slide!! 🦋 it has a name! flappy!
everyone being afraid of the butterfly except bingo because we know she loves insects!
chilli reminiscing how she and frisky used to go to the lookout to "think" when we all knew she meant drink LOL
frisky's 3rd friend appears!
BRANDY IS PREGNANT???
the canon in d rendition as bgm
the busker being the priest??
also they got mort and maynard to come attend the wedding too!!
frisky's father is a typical surfer dude lmao
we see trixie standing amongst the girls during the bouquet toss. and then we see stripe come in to intercept the toss. does this mean that stripe and trixie are not married yet and have just been cohabitating? stripe grabs the bouquet and celebrates, but we see trixie face palm... what does this mean??
love the photo montage and the huge family photo, how it shows that you can't get everybody to be ready for the photo
AFTERPARTY
GRANDPA BOB WENT TO INDIA TO FIND HIMSELF 😭 man needed spiritual rediscovery
the busker is the music dj too!!
uh oh... stripe and trixie are fighting... perhaps it was about the bouquet toss? and we see socks playing with the cake toppers - possibly mimicking her parents actions
awww Radley quit his job so that frisky could stay in a city she loved ❤️
they brought back the music from dance mode!
NANA AND BOB FLOSSING!!!
chattermax randomly appearing 😭
bingo getting stuck in the railing again
bingo being sad because she has to move and lila won't be able to follow. which is also the moment I realised they won't be moving in the end, because of the montage at the end of daddy drop-off episode where bingo and lila grow up together and be friends "forever and ever and ever"!
the 2 English sheepdogs pushing their fluff away from their eyes to see haha
THEM SEEING WINTON'S DAD'S HOUSE WITH A POOL WHICH IS FOR SALE BECAUSE THEYRE MOVING IN WITH THE TERRIERS AND THEIR MOTHER!! THEY ALL FIT IN ONE CAR!!!
seeing the iconic bluey house empty, with spots where furniture used to be somehow makes me feel a little empty and nostalgic
the montage of them saying goodbye to their old neighbours, bandit having one last chat with pat, the girls and chilli saying goodbye to judo and her mum
Judo still has short hair!
chilli reminiscing the kitchen because bluey took her first steps there
WHO SANG THAT SONG IN THE END PLEASE RELEASE IT LUDO STUDIOS
THE SHEEPDOGS WENT BACK ON THEIR DECISION TO BUY BLUEYS HOUSE TO BUY WINTON'S DAD HOUSE
you can tell how much chilli didn't want to move as she was the first one out of the car running over to hug him when she realised bandit didn't want to sell the house anymore. and the shoulder shakes shows that she was fully sobbing too
iconic kiwi rug! loved the simplicity of the last scene, where even if there's nothing around you, as long as you're together with the people you love, eating the simplest meal, enjoying the moment, that's family.

Iris Barrel Apfel, Decorator and Fashion Stylist
(August 29, 1921 – March 1, 2024)
Ms. Apfel was one of the most vivacious personalities in the worlds of fashion, textiles, and interior design, she has cultivated a personal style that is both witty and exuberantly idiosyncratic.
Her originality was typically revealed in her mixing of high and low fashions—Dior haute couture with flea market finds, nineteenth-century ecclesiastical vestments with Dolce & Gabbana lizard trousers.
With remarkable panache and discernment, she combines colors, textures, and patterns without regard to period, provenance, and, ultimately, aesthetic conventions. Paradoxically, her richly layered combinations—even at their most extreme and baroque—project a boldly graphic modernity.
Iris Barrel was born on Aug. 29, 1921, in Astoria, Queens, the only child of Samuel Barrel, who owned a glass and mirror business, and his Russian-born wife, Sadye, who owned a fashion boutique.
She studied art history at New York University, then qualified to teach and did so briefly in Wisconsin before fleeing back to New York to work on Women's Wear Daily, and for interior designer Elinor Johnson, decorating apartments for resale and honing her talent for sourcing rare items before opening her own design firm. She was also an assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman.
As a distinguished collector and authority on antique fabrics, Iris Apfel has consulted on numerous restoration projects that include work at the White House that spanned nine presidencies from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton.
Along with her husband, Carl, she founded Old World Weavers, an international textile manufacturing company and ran it until they retired in 1992. The Apfels specialized in the reproduction of fabrics from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and traveled to Europe twice a year in search of textiles they could not source in the United States.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute assembled 82 ensembles and 300 accessories from her personal collection in 2005 in a show about her called “Rara Avis”.
Almost overnight, Ms. Apfel became an international celebrity of pop fashion.
Ms. Apfel was seen in a television commercial for the French car DS 3, became the face of the Australian fashion brand Blue Illusion, and began a collaboration with the start-up WiseWear. A year later, Mattel created a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in her image. Last year, she appeared in a beauty campaign for makeup with Ciaté London.
Six years after the Met show she started her fashion line "Rara Avis" with the Home Shopping Network.
She was cover girl of Dazed and Confused, among many other publications, window display artist at Bergdorf Goodman, designer and design consultant, then signed to IMG in 2019 as a model at age 97.
Ms. Iris Apfel became a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin in its Division of Textiles and Apparel, teaching about imagination, craft and tangible pleasures in a world of images.
In 2018, she published “Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon,” an autobiographical collection of musings, anecdotes and observations on life and style.
Ms. Apfel’s apartments in New York and Palm Beach were full of furnishings and tchotchkes that might have come from a Luis Buñuel film: porcelain cats, plush toys, statuary, ornate vases, gilt mirrors, fake fruit, stuffed parrots, paintings by Velázquez and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, a mannequin on an ostrich.
The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach, Florida, is designing a building that will house a dedicated gallery of Ms. Apfel's clothes, accessories, and furnishings.
Ms. Apfel’s work had a universal quality, It’s was a trend.
Rest in Power !

I Miss You I'm Sorry
Pairing- Charles leclerc x reader
Content- Angst
Word Count- 1462 words
Author's Note: Hello lovely people! This is the first ever fan fiction that I've written. I would love it if you could give it a read and let me know what you thought of it.
Read part two here
It had been fate that they had actually met. Lewis had begged her to come clubbing with him and his colleagues before they had to leave for the Australian Grand Prix. Y/n had no interest in going to a club and sitting amongst a pool of sweaty bodies and the stench of alcohol. But she could not resist Lewis' manipulative attempts at trying to get her out of finishing her marketing assignment. That was the thing about someone who knew you ever since you were a baby. They knew exactly which strings to pull to get you to give into their demands. So there Y/n was in a black dress and black stilettos, sipping on a margarita and chatting with Lewis.
"I want you to meet someone", Lewis said with a bright glint in his eyes. Y/n knew this meant only one thing- trouble.
" The last time you asked me to meet someone, it ended with me in bed with a guy who loved to recite the American Constitution while having sex. "
" Oh, yeah that was a mistake on my part. But I promise I know this person personally. And I've a feeling you guys are gonna get along really well. Just give him a chance. "
Y/n was sceptical but decided to give it a chance. What's the worst that could happen?
Lewis beckoned someone over his shoulder. Y/n couldn't make out the silhouette of the person who had come over.
" Hi! I'm Charles", the person said. As he came closer Y/n could make out the outline of his blush pink lips and his dimpled cheeks. A faint pink crept up on his cheeks as they held eye contact. As cliche and cheesy as it sounds, Y/n felt the world around her stop. It was as if they were the only two people there.
Their relationship just blossomed from there on. It didn't feel real , how easy their relationship was and how much they enjoyed each other's presence. It was as if they both had found the piece in their lives they didn't even know was missing. They were each other's haven.
"Do you think we will ever get married? ", Charles had asked Y/n out of the blue one day. They were on a vacation to Ibiza. It was late in the evening and they were cuddling on the balcony of their hotel room.
" Do you want to get married? " Y/n questioned nervously. They hadn't talked about marriage before but a blissful feeling washed over her at the thought of them being married.
" Yeah… I want to marry you but in a year maybe. We are both busy with our careers right now. I want to give you your dream wedding and it wouldn't be fair of me to ask you to marry me when I know I won't be fully there for you."
Y/n couldn't believe that Charles really wanted to marry her. They had been together for a year at this point so talking about marriage was a logical step in the relationship. Still it was surprising that Charles loved her enough to want to marry her and spend the rest of their lives together.
Everyone talks about the beautiful parts of a relationship but nobody teaches you about the ugly ones. No one prepares you for the screaming matches in the middle of the night. No one prepares you for the distance that arises suddenly. It is funny how one moment Y/n and Charles were so in love and the other, they were fighting because Charles loaded the dishwasher wrong.
Neither of them knew how to deal with this, how to deal with the fights, the distance, the separation. It became exhausting for them to love one another. The love which once felt like freedom, like waking up on a Sunday morning and realising you have no school now felt like a cage, a restriction. Neither Charles nor Y/n knew how their relationship took a turn for the worse and they didn't understand how to tackle the problems. The dreams of marriage and kids and a white picket fence house seemed so far away now.
It was Charles' idea to take a break. " We are draining each other. Maybe a break would do us good " were his words. Y/n didn't question it because she knew a break would be beneficial for them. She thought that they would get back together after two-three months. Little did she know just how wrong she was.
Charles took the "break" better than Y/n. Where Y/n's days were wrapped with grief and pain of losing her partner, Charles was seen out partying and going on vacations with his friends. Y/n wondered whether Charles had felt any sadness after the break. She wondered if he too found himself reaching for her every morning or calling her name as soon as he came home only to realise she wasn't there. Because she did. She found Charles in everything she did. She missed him dearly. She missed how she forgot everything as soon as Charles had his arms around her. She missed the feeling of his kisses. She missed seeing him the first thing in the morning and the last one before she slept. She hadn't realised just how much their lives had been entwined until Charles left. But she told herself that it won't be long before they resolve their issues and get back together. Everyday she would tell herself, just a few more days and then everything will be fine.
They didn't see each other until November. The racing season was over and Lewis decided to throw a party to celebrate a great season. Y/n hadn't planned on coming but Lewis begged her and she couldn't resist him. She didn't know how she would face Charles. What would she say? It had been 6 months since they decided to take a break and he hadn't reached out to her even once. While a part of her was angry and bitter, another part of her was excited to see her love again. Maybe today they will talk at length and rekindle their relationship. Y/n arrived at the party with a racing heart and hopeful mind. She greeted the other drivers and looked for Charles. Everyone around her was apprehensive about talking about Charles to her. She felt they were hiding something from her.
Charles arrived a while later. He was talking to Pierre at the bar when Y/n spotted him. She approached him with a soft smile. She felt uneasy by the way Charles' smile dropped and instead a look of trepidation fell over his face as he saw her. As soon as she opened her mouth to say something, a brunette approached Charles.
" Mon amour where did you disappear? I have been searching for you", the brunette said to him as she softly kissed him.
Y/n left without saying anything. She felt embarrassed and stupid and angry. She sat on the swing in Lewis' garden with tears streaming down her face. It became clear to her why Charles hadn't tried to contact her.
Charles came running outside. He didn't say anything as he sat on the swing beside her.
"How long? " Y/n questioned him.
" Three months. "
" Does she make you happy? "
" Y/n, I - I was going to tell you, I just didn't know how, I-I never intended for you to find out this way. I'm so-"
"Just answer the question Charles. "
Charles took a deep breath and then whispered a quiet "yes".
Y/n wiped her tears and nodded her head. She knew she had to leave. She couldn't be near him. She stood up, wiped her hands on her dress and said, " I really loved you, you know? Even during the fights, on the days where we wouldn't speak to each other, I loved you. I'm sorry I couldn't make you happy Charles. I really am. I hope you find happiness and love in her that you couldn't in me. "
Y/n didn't wait to hear what Charles had to say. She just left. She knew it would take some time to get over him, to get over the love she once had. But she will learn to live her life without him. She will try her best to forget the eyes that became her home. She will discard the memories they shared and she will try to forget the way his voice felt when it said her name. She will grow and she will hope to find someone who loves her unconditionally. But most importantly she hopes that Charles will realise what he lost before it's too late.

Gift Battle (Yoohankim)
Kim Dokja gave Yoo Joonghyuk a dinosaur ladle.
So of course the week after that Han Sooyoung gave him napkins with duckies holding knives.
And of course the week after that one Kim Dokja buys his man a soft knitted sweater with a little dancing skeleton.
Then the battle really started.
Sooyoung gave him a fucking hamster, cage and everything. Yoo Joonghyuk named it Cheese.
Kim Dokja then had to learn how to make Yoo Joonghyuk’s favourite cake, Selva Negra.
Han Sooyoung gave him concert tickets to his favourite band, Tame Impala.
And Dokja bought him a new console, the latest in the market.
Han Sooyoung, of course, was the first one to make it sexual, and bought a very sexy piece of lingerie of which Dokja also benefited a lot.
And then Kim Dokja just had to give Yoo Joonghyuk a break and top him.
Han Sooyoung, not to be surpassed, followed suit.
Then they both got them all a house to move into, because neither of them could pay it without the other.
And then Kim Dokja ordered a stone grill for the backyard.
So Han Sooyoung got him a greenhouse, full of starter farm plants.
Kim Dokja adopted an australian shepherd puppy. Yoo Joonghyuk named it Pancakes.
Sooyoung gifted him a hairless cat. He named it Banana. Banana wore a little vest with a dancing skeleton.
Dokja bought dancing skeleton vests for the dog and the hamster.
Sooyoung gave Joonghyuk a new toothbrush. He had already bought himself one the day before...
Yoo Joonghyuk finally took an end to the battle by getting on his knees in front of his partners and proposing one afternoon.

The second household for the Foundations for Families Challenge, Rain Montenegro. I chose Foundation 4 for her; my idea was something like, "old Australian council housing that was sold off to Grandma Montenegro, which was inherited by Rain, who decided to just do whatever with it instead of tearing it down because she'd never be able to afford to own property otherwise". It's inspired by a few houses I've lived near, especially the "whimsical" art displayed on the fence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Key points: Furniture should be cheap but colourful, with a bias for green and minimal purple. The interior inspiration was a cross between "maximalist" Instagram home deco influencers with the wildest beef you've ever heard of, mixed with the nice but overbearing older hippie lady at the farmer's market. Everything about this house makes me feel like she needs a roommate, but maybe she just has serial couch surfers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My least favourite room of the house (bedroom - just couldn't make it come together) and my most favourite (the bathroom!)
Tumblr media
Rain's requested studio. I imagine it was originally just a smaller bedroom, nothing special or fancy. Maybe this was where Rain slept as a kid when she visited her grandma :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was hard not landscaping things the way I normally would and keeping things looking a bit scraggly/dry but still "on purpose". There's a small produce garden 'round the corner there, and a flower arranging station by the front, because she seems like the type to collect hobbies.
Tumblr media
Floorplan on the foundation. I kinda like how this challenge forced/encouraged me to make use of bigger outdoor landings. My favourite part (after the bathroom) is the little kitchenette.

I know you've all been waiting eagerly for it, and here it is: the first Wikipedia poll of the new year! Links and summaries below the cut as always.
On 29 September 1940, a mid-air collision occurred over Brocklesby, New South Wales, Australia. The accident was unusual in that the aircraft involved, two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Avro Ansons of No. 2 Service Flying Training School, remained locked together after colliding, and then landed safely.
On 11 May 1812, at about 5:15 pm, Spencer Perceval, the prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a Liverpool merchant with a grievance against the government. Bellingham was detained; four days after the murder, he was tried, convicted and sentenced to death.
The Dorset Ooser (/ˈoʊsər/) is a wooden head that featured in the 19th-century folk culture of Melbury Osmond, a village in the southwestern English county of Dorset. The head was hollow, thus perhaps serving as a mask, and included a humanoid face with horns, a beard, and a hinged jaw which allowed the mouth to open and close.
The Ediacaran (/ˌiːdiˈækərən/; formerly Vendian) biota is a taxonomic period classification that consists of all life forms that were present on Earth during the Ediacaran Period (c. 635–538.8 Mya). These were enigmatic tubular and frond-shaped, mostly sessile, organisms. Trace fossils of these organisms have been found worldwide, and represent the earliest known complex multicellular organisms.
John Rykener, also known as Eleanor, was a 14th-century sex worker arrested in December 1394 for performing a sex act with John Britby, a man who was a former chaplain of the St Margaret Pattens church, in London's Cheapside while wearing female attire. Although historians tentatively link Rykener, who was male, to a prisoner of the same name, the only known facts of the sex worker's life come from an interrogation made by the mayor of London.
Norwich Market (also known as Norwich Provision Market) is an outdoor market consisting of around 200 stalls in central Norwich, England. Founded in the latter part of the 11th century to supply Norman merchants and settlers moving to the area following the Norman conquest of England, it replaced an earlier market a short distance away. It has been in operation on the present site for over 900 years.
Olive Elaine Morris (26 June 1952 – 12 July 1979) was a Jamaican-born British-based community leader and activist in the feminist, black nationalist, and squatters' rights campaigns of the 1970s. At the age of 17, she claimed she was assaulted by Metropolitan Police officers following an incident involving a Nigerian diplomat in Brixton, South London. She joined the British Black Panthers, becoming a Marxist–Leninist communist and a radical feminist.
Paul Palaiologos Tagaris (Greek: Παῦλος Παλαιολόγος Τάγαρις, c. 1320/1340 – after 1394) was a Byzantine Greek monk and impostor. A scion of the Tagaris family, Paul also claimed a somewhat dubious connection with the Palaiologos dynasty that ruled the Byzantine Empire at the time. He fled his marriage as a teenager and became a monk, but soon his fraudulent practices embroiled him in scandal.
The Royal baccarat scandal, also known as the Tranby Croft affair, was a British gambling scandal of the late 19th century involving the Prince of Wales—the future King Edward VII. The scandal started during a house party in September 1890, when Sir William Gordon-Cumming, a lieutenant colonel in the Scots Guards, was accused of cheating at baccarat.
In a protracted conflict during the Spanish colonization of the Americas, Spanish colonisers gradually incorporated the territory that became the modern country of Guatemala into the colonial Viceroyalty of New Spain. Before the conquest, this territory contained a number of competing Mesoamerican kingdoms, the majority of which were Maya.

Kano x Reader who fights with a flamethrower 🔥
A/N: So this was requested by someone and I’m so sorry but I can’t remember who 😅
Warning(s): Mentions of fire and flamethrowers, mention of violence, mention of alcohol, Kano being Kano 🥲
Tumblr media
Expect a corny fire-themed pickup line upon meeting him for the first time because this man has no shame whatsoever
At first he isn’t incredibly impressed by the flamethrower, but don’t take it personally, he’s just around a lot of weapons by default plus he has probably been attacked with almost all manner of weapons so I imagine something that big doesn’t faze him at this point
One day , though, he gets a front row seat to you absolutely destroying a Tarkatan that tried to attack you and hOO BOI
TALK ABOUT SMOKIN’ HOT 🔥🔥🔥🥵🥵🥵
Kano has never believed in love at first sight, but congratulations, you have now made him a believer
And as you’re walking away from the middle of the market (where said Tarkatan attacked you), covered in sweat, blood, and viscera here comes our favorite Australian dumbass to court you in the only way he knows how
“Fancy gettin’ a pint later? I’ll pick up the tab~” You snorted. “And they say chivalry is dead, I’d love too.”
Well this was unexpected, despite being the Black Dragon’s most eligible dumbass bachelor, not many people outside of work like to go out drinking (or anything at all) with him!
But that’s besides the point, let’s get to the fun part: getting drinks together! No it’s not a date what made you think that?!
And in true Kano fashion, he takes you to the best place he knows to get drinks! The fight club! 😀
Hope you’re okay with getting blood on your shoes and/or clothes because he wanted to give you the best seat in the house to watch as people beat each other to a bloody, unrecognizable, pulp!
It’s going to be an…interesting night, that’s for sure.

NOS interview with Daniel, Australian GP, 1 April 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And more in-depth in this article:
With the characteristic wide grin, shining white teeth and his roaring laugh, he is prominent in the paddock, Down Under at the Albert Park circuit. For the first time this year Daniel Ricciardo is present in the guest house of Max Verstappen's team Red Bull Racing. Not as a teammate, not even as a substitute. Although he is a reserve driver, the 33-year-old Australian is mainly used as an advertising pillar and marketing gun.
It looks a bit painful, but Ricciardo is not the type to be taken aback. "I think it's especially cool to be here. A race weekend without stress is quite nice," he says on the track in Melbourne. "Of course it feels double and all feelings come up here, but I also enjoy this life. I have more time for hobbies, friends and family. It's also nice to break fewer days on the plane. It feels less uncomfortable than I feared."
For many years Melbourne was the scene of Ricciardo's home race; now he's standing by the line and everyone wants something from him. An interview, an autograph, a selfie or a chat. But also: team discussions behind the scenes about the optimal set-up of the car. "It's business as usual, really. I'm busy in the paddock all day. My cockpit has been traded for a seat by the pit wall, but the fans give me a warm bath. They still treat me like one of the drivers. Very nice to meet you."
He doesn't like to admit it, but of course it immediately tickles when Ricciardo sees the RB19 of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez. Especially now that the car is outflanking the entire field. "It's an exciting car, exceeding all the team's expectations. Nobody expected us to dominate like this. Of course I want to get in and race straight away, but I don't feel any frustration."
Of course, the eight-time grand prix winner is immediately ready to fill in if something unexpected happens to Verstappen or Pérez. "I think he only needs ten minutes to get there," assures team leader Christian Horner. "I make sure I'm fit and ready and if the opportunity arises I will give everything to help the team," added Ricciardo. "Of course the devil in me would like to put something in Max or Checo's shakes so that they get sick for a while, haha. Nope. Just kidding!"
What went wrong with Ricciardo? When did his career decline? For that we have to go back to August 2018. Ricciardo was teammate of Verstappen and was able to extend his contract, but made a surprising switch to Renault. When that team's plans turned out to be much bigger than the results, he moved again in 2021 to a team with mountains of gold: McLaren.
That's where things went terribly wrong. Ricciardo was outclassed by Lando Norris, there was no click with the team and the results were abysmal. The team terminated Ricciardo's contract last year and signed his young compatriot Oscar Piastri. Although Ricciardo touched an impressive transfer fee, he was left empty-handed. No team showed serious interest.
"Of course there is a dent in my confidence," admits Ricciardo. "I felt that even when I got into the Red Bull simulator for the first time recently. I was a bit nervous, felt the pressure and hoped I was still good enough. But I felt in my place again very quickly. I'm home again."
Ricciardo says he has no regrets about his failed transfers. "I'm not like that. Everything happens for a reason. You learn from wrong decisions and setbacks, you grow and you become stronger. That also applies to the two rotten years at McLaren." "But what if?"
What if he had not fled - as team boss Christian Horner put it at the time - with his tail between his legs to avoid the internal duel with Max Verstappen? Would he now be the proud owner of a world title? Probably not. After all, Ricciardo left because he noticed that he was no longer the dream number one of Red Bull Racing. "I noticed that the relationships in the team were changing. Max was the future. That was noticeable in everything."
The team had embraced a new apple of their eye with the still very young Verstappen. The team was built around the Dutchman. The will of the driver, his father Jos and his management became law. And Ricciardo didn't want to play second fiddle. As a grand prix winner, he also felt too good for it, but only managed one more grand prix victory after his departure. His F1 career fizzled out, but Ricciardo is still brooding on a return.
Around the summer he will make a decision about his motorsport future. Options are legion. The driver is so beloved that teams in Nascar, IndyCar or endurance races line up. But for now, 'Dannyric' is holding off and seems to be one more aim all arrows at an F1 seat. "I don't want to compete for the sake of competing. Fighting in the middle or the rear doesn't motivate me. I'm only interested in a fast seat and I don't feel like starting from zero again."
"I made a well-considered decision to take a break to recharge myself. I still support that. I'm not actively looking for a cockpit yet. My feeling is that I want to return to Formula 1 next year. All sorts of factors come into play, but it doesn't feel like I'm retired from F1 right now. I'm still hungry. The fire hasn't gone out yet."
The 41-year-old Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso is Ricciardo's example. "It's great that he gets a podium two times in a row. I'm enjoying the resurrection of the old man. He's eight years older. I want a revival like that too."

top 5 apple cultivars
I love you so much I'm kissing you on the lips LET ME TELL YOU
okay so first thing first. You might know the infamous comedic apple ranking website. And while the ranking criteria is relatively sound (things like flesh, sweetness, skin, taste etc) the author has a palate of geriatric pangolin who would probably die if he tasted anything that's not insultingly bland. Proper ranking apple cultivars ranking has no damn point system bc it isn't rigid, acknowledges that not all apples are tasted in the same condition/ripeness and in no way would call it call Granny Smith a shitty apple.
So here comes my objective top five apple cultivars. Some of them might come from similar cross breeds (and what does it say about Red D*licious that the thing we most do with it is to try for it to not taste like itself), but all of them sans ones are their own protected and in some cases trademarked breeds.
1) Kanzi
For the longest time it was not available on the Czech market, by which i mean that the first time I had a Kanzi apple I had to take three different trains to an "organic" orchard two hours from my house just to be able to buy one. On the way there I forgot to buy a ticket for the last leg of the journey, got caught by the conductor and was told that I can either get off the next station, or pay 40€ fine. As the orchard would be closed for business if I had to get off and wait for the next train, this officially makes kanzi the most expensive apple I've ever eaten.
It's small and sometimes mottled, but don't let it's visage fool you. It's firm, juicy, the perfect of sweet and sour and the flesh has a smooth texture. The skin isn't too thick and has a great taste on its own. Perfect rucksack apple to take with you on hikes.
2) that one apple I bought on a farmers market at Zelňák in Brno and that when asked about the cultivar was told "idk, my grandma has two trees in her backyard". Unlike anything I've ever tasted, with sweet, soft flesh that was all that other fully red apples desire to be. It keeps me up at night thinking about what sort of crossbreed it could be
3) Granny Smith. The MILF of the apples. I'd eat this juicy, spicy Australian grandma any time. All that libel you see written online is just people being unable to appreciate a good, firm sour apple. True it might be little bit hard on the teeth sometimes but the way the flesh breaks off gives you the option to go truly hog wild on it. Staple apple (stapple, if you will) of any kitchen, ready to be snacked on any time.
4) pink lady. I first bought this at this corner store in Bødo and then I've spent the following month going through every single grocer in Norway trying to find it again, with no luck. When they rolled them into Czech rep few years back I nearly creamed my pants right there in the Lidl fruit section. They are crunchy, sweet but fresh, the perfect inoffensive apple that is good to go with anything. Maybe little overpriced when compared to other apples, but a classic anyway. I'm not calling them a stapple only for the fact that they rippen up pretty quickly and unlike granny Smith make it hard to see visually if they are past the good texture point.
5) Halloween Apples©. I'm so angry that I can get them only once a year and if Lidl ever discontinues them I'm gonna go on a warpath. Because somehow while they were trying to breed an apple with red flesh, they not only succeeded but they created a cultivar that tastes exactly like pomegranates. I can, will and did gorge myself on them till I was sick. So low only because of their criminal unavailability.
Cosmic Crisp didn't make the cut because even though it's The Apple, let's be honest. It's mostly marketing, and it tastes like more juicy pink lady. Had to stick the one I had in a fridge for a moment just so the flesh would firm up into a decent texture.

So today an all ages drag event at the pride center in my city (Melbourne Aus) was cancelled due to threats from nazi groups like the proud boys. The community had been gearing up to counterprotest and drown them out, but at the end of the day the risk was deemed not worth it to all those queer kids and the event was cancelled.
This is fucking horrifying to me on a very personal level. This is the third such incident that I've been aware of in my city in recent months - the first was an event that I was a vendor at, a youth pride at a library, where fash protested at the doors. The second was across the road from my house, at a festival that just happened to include a drag performance, where nazis showed up and screamed from the sidelines. This third time, the event was cancelled before the threat could become tangible, and it was directed at our actual community pride center.
That community center is my home. I am there every single month as a vendor at the long-established queer markets. I am going to be there even more, soon, to join the queer community radio and broadcast station as a volunteer and podcaster. People I love are there every day. My community is there every day. The people who work there are all community members. They're people who survived the aids crisis. They're 40 year old trans women. They're 20 year old queers getting involved in activism for the first time. They are people I know, and people I don't know but consider my family anyway. I feel so much at home when I'm in this space, surrounded by my people.
All of these people, all the years of community resources that have been built for us, all of this is under incredible threat right now. Not just in my city. The rise of facism is trying to strangle us out. We can not let this happen.
What can I do?
- Get connected to your local queer community. This will be more relevant for big city areas, but don't discount the power of rural queer groups! Go on Facebook (yes, Facebook) and search for "[city] [trans/queer/bi/etc]" and see what pops up. For example I am in Melbourne trans fam, Melbourne bi network, melbourne aces+, Australian nonbinary community etc groups. Many of these groups will have discord servers as well. Connect. Converse. Make friends and find out what is happening around you. This is the one thing Facebook is great for. Go to events, follow local artists, stay connected. You will hear about it if something like this is going down. You will be given ways to help.
- Learn self defence. I cannot stress enough that you should try to learn at least a few self defence techniques in times like this, especially if you are visibly trans/queer.
- Do not go looking for a fight. If you're going to an event where there is risk, don't try to antagonise nazis. Stay away, travel in groups, and stay aware. Don't let them ruin your fun, but don't lose track of your surroundings. Stay safe.
These are just the things that I can think of right now. The most important thing is staying connected and knowing what's happening in the community around you. We need to protect ourselves by protecting each other, and we need to stand firm. Our family is hurting. We need to protect it.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.
