FARMLAND ON THE BANKS OF THE LENA RIVER
SIBERIA.
Getting exiled to Siberia was the oldest cliche in the book, and frankly, she loved it. She’d done many things in her time. Some on the level, some less so, but she’d never been as happy as she was now, and had been since she’d taken the decision to ‘retire’ - to go it alone.
Of course, freelance sometimes meant that you didn’t always get paid on time, and had to dip in to your personal savings, but that didn’t trouble Nadia. She’d made enough, and put enough away, that even if she didn’t get another paying job for the next ten years, she could still live comfortably in her own little nest, away from the troubles of the world.
On the trailing edge of those thoughts her computer bleeped, drawing her attention back to its screen, and she reluctantly uncovered her legs from beneath the blanket, stood and crossed the room.
“What do you have for me this time,” she asked as she turned on the space heater beneath the desk, pulled up the rolling chair, and sat down in it to read whatever it was the machine was telling her she should pay attention to next.
She quickly scanned the information on the screen - nothing new. She had already been following the cyber-attacks in the UK, and she’d been getting the play-by-play as Featherstone kept her apprised of the situation, “in case I have to call you in for help,” he’d written in the last email she’d received from the man that was now somewhere higher up in the UK Prime Minister’s cabinet than he had any business to be.
It made her chuckle just thinking about it, and she couldn’t help but wonder whether he’d been there in the COBRA room when everything was leaving everyone hot under the collar.
He was a nice enough guy, capable under pressure, he and Markey both, they were just - neither of them - what she was looking for in a man. She let out another soft laugh, glancing down at cat that was winding herself back and forth around Nadia’s ankles. “You should have seen their faces, Dra,” she told the cat, and reached down to pet her, again recalling the day in Rome when she’d pulled the stunt to convince the dueling suitors that they were wasting their time, since her tastes ran with the fairer sex.
She was about to get up again and leave the computer to its own machinations when something on the screen caught her attention. She might have missed it if she hadn’t been dwelling on the past; indulging in nostalgia as her grandmother so often accused, but in this instance, it wasn’t an indulgence, and it may well have opened the door to something relevant; something important.
Something she was going to have to look into.
THE ROYAL LONDON HOSPITAL

Even after several hours there had been little to no change in Anna’s condition. In a way that was a good thing, because if meant that whatever was going on inside her head wasn’t getting any worse, but by the same token, whatever injury she’d sustained in the blast had left her with a condition serious enough to steal consciousness from her, even now, long after the event itself.
Tired of sitting, he put aside the papers he had in his hand - even with such a personal matter going on he was still the Prime Minister and he still had work to do - and stood, stretching before he crossed the room to reach out and take her hand in his.
“Come on, Anna,” he murmured softly, “Don’t do this.”
Her hand was cold, and he reached out to tug the blanket, that was half folded at her feet, up to cover her a little more. He drew breath, and opened his mouth to say something more, but a sudden commotion from out in the hallway drew his attention, grabbed his ire and pulled it up into his chest; angry at the disrespect of it all.
Turning abruptly, he strode toward the door of the private room and wrenched it open to the sight of the two armed police officers struggling with a wiry little weasel of a man, who seemed to care not one iota that he was disturbing the peace, as well as resisting the actions of said police officers.
“What the fuck is the meaning of this!” he spat, uncaring of whomever might be around to hear the PM dropping a heartfelt F-bomb. At his words the weasel stopped struggling, and released from the restraining grasp of the cops, tugged his ill fitting jacket down, wriggling inside of it a little to settle himself.
“Robert Sutherland?” he asked, in a voice that absolutely matched the impression that Sutherland had gotten of the man.
The PM raised an eyebrow, not at all jumping to any realization he might have made in better circumstances. Where the hell had this guy been? Living under a stone for the last several months?
“Yes?” he said, both confirmation and question rolled into a single syllable.
When the weasel held out the manila envelope in his direction, with a complete lack of caution, he took it, and even began to open the offending article, slowly at first and then more quickly as the man added, “You’ve been served.”

Jordan rubbed his eyes and sighed. He had been staring at the code on his laptop for the better part of the last six hours and just when he thought he might be getting somewhere, the pieces he thought were somehow wrong fell into place and showed him, yet again that he had pursued another redundancy - which was exactly what the programmer had wanted.
Like a rat in a maze he’d fallen for the smell of something good, and in the end tasted only the bitterness of poison. They were never going to get to the bottom of this, and like Wolfe, he knew that time was running out before… whatever was going to happen next happened.
He backed up, and read the next line of code again, making subtle changes and watching the simulation that he was running side by side in a separate application.

It all seemed so very simple, on the surface, and again he was sure that was the point. The command lines were basic, run of the mill, virus riddled, and seemingly both harmless and easy to disarm if triggered. They’d seen that much - all of them - when Wolfe had manage to activate an inbuilt ‘killswitch,’ and he said a killswitch and not the killswitch because like his fellow agent, he knew that what they were seeing was only a temporary reprieve. So their task was twofold. Figure out what vulnerability would be exploited next, and find the ‘real’ killswitch; all before the unknown variable of time allowed expired.

“You do know this is going to be like looking for a needle in a frozen haystack, right?” Sam looked up from the packing crate on which the map was draped, showing them key routes and possible places to investigate once they reached the out of the way air base in the wilds of central Siberia.
“I got a few ideas,” Bucky answered, fingers spread on the map as though to hold it down, or maybe to keep himself from flying away into an unwelcome past. Maybe if they stuck to the itinerary sent along with the map, he could avoid being any more triggered than he already was.
“You good?” Sam asked, as though reading his mind again.
He simply nodded. How did you find the words to explain the mindless sense of being trapped as you ran - sometimes literally - across frozen tundra in search of a mark that you’d only ever seen in a grainy photograph, and really had no connection to, emotional or otherwise.

Ava sighed. Finally. She felt as though she had been sitting for hours, and the cocktail she’d had an hour ago had done little to ease the tension in her shoulders. Quite the opposite, in fact, it had left her with the promise of a headache that was threatening to grow into something a whole lot more substantial.
She picked up her shoulder bag, and extended the handle on her cabin luggage, then began to make her way down the long hallway toward where the posted signs told her she would find her departure gate.
While she waited it had grown dark, almost suddenly, but even through the darkness - where illumination from aircraft headlights sliced through the night, she could see rapid fall of rain outside of the floor to ceiling windows, great gray globules that fell like filthy gummies, except where they caught the light, then they sparkled like diamonds.
She chuckled to herself. The rain didn’t really matter. She wouldn’t have to venture out into it, and soon she would be on her way to much warmer, drier climes - even if it was a crazy midnight flight.

It was staring him in the face, and he knew it, and that was driving him crazy. He reached out for the print out of the previous virus codes - the ones he’d marked in multi-colored highlighter - and somehow he managed to avoid knocking over the cup he’d just drank from as he typed with his other hand the series of zeros and ones, communicating with his computer at it’s most basic, primal level; digging around in it like a dentist performing a root canal.
”Daddy,” he hated the dentist, but he hated pain even more, and his daughter's voice almost made up for the fact that he was sitting, in pain, at the dentist’s office.
“Hey, sweet stuff,” he greeted her sounding about a thousand percent more cheerful than he felt. “What’s cookin’?”
“Mister Bun—” she started, and he gasped.
“You’re cooking Mister Bun!”
“No, silly,” she laughed and he couldn’t help but smile. “Pop said I should call you, because… Daddy, it’s amazing! Mister Bun learned to count!”

The breath flew from his body as his agile mind immediately made the connections, and he turned immediately to a second keyboard, his chair swiveling almost past the point at which he would be able to type, and picked up a headset which he fixed into his ear at the same time.
“Cody?”
He heard Donovan’s voice, but he ignored it. He was in no doubt that the same stunt he’d pulled to kill Cerberus would not work to bring a premature halt to the devastation that would occur if he didn’t make someone aware of the problem… right now! Jordan felt as though everything he’d eaten and drank in the last six hours was holding him to ransom against the rising, hot, needles that were perforating everything he was from the inside out as he stabbed repeatedly at the flight attendant call button, trying to get attention.
He hadn’t missed the change in the engine sounds, and cursed himself for taking so long to take the code apart hex by hex, and zero by one to get to the bottom of it. There was no stopping this one. It would run its course, and the only way they’d purge it would be the solution he’d suggested to Cody back in Chicago, and even then there was no guarantee that the people behind all this wouldn’t just exploit some other, vulnerable, back door and start it up all over again.
Ignored again for the… well he’d lost count, he unclipped his seat belt and started to move forward, toward the cockpit door, calling out to the nearest flight attendant with as much authority as he could muster.
“Excuse me, ma’am,”
“I’m sorry, sir, you’re going to have to return to your seat. We’re just about to—”
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking…
They were both interrupted by the voice that began its cheery announcement that they had almost reached their destination, and would be landing shortly.
Jordan pulled out his ID, and held it up right in front of the flight attendant’s face.
“My name is Jordan Reed, I’m a technical analyst with the CIA, and I insist on speaking with the captain. Now. I have reason to believe this aircraft is in serious danger, and not just this one. Please. You have to—”
The sudden shift in attitude of the plane, the unexpected lurch caught everyone that wasn’t already in their seat by surprise. Luggage in the process of being stowed, and service items still being collected were suddenly launched into aisles and onto the heads of the helpless passengers below, but it was the sound that was the most terrifying of all.
The high pitched screech - a death knell of metal on metal, split the sound of chaos, and outside of the unshaded windows, sparks lit the night, disrupting the rhythmic blink of green and white.
Jordan felt his feet leave the ground for barely a second before the air was knocked out of him and pain exploded on his right side. Still he maintained the presence of mind to make a grab for the seat against which he’d been thrown, pull himself into it, and hissing with the added pain, fasten the belt around his lap, before - against her protests - grabbing the flight attendant as she flailed back and forth, bouncing like a pinball on the buffers against the seats either side of the aisle. He pulled her into the seat beside him. She took the hint and strapped herself in.
Around them, cries of fear and pain were all that Jordan could hear, and it occurred to him that at least they hadn’t exploded. Whatever had hit them - and something surely had - it hadn’t destroyed them on impact, but he wondered - seriously wondered - how much chance there was of them getting down to the ground safely, even as it seemed the plane leveled off.

He supposed that was fair, after all. Things hadn’t been easy since the incident with Zoe, and afterwards, recently, all of the troubles over his wife’s past career…
“Jesus Christ,” he swore softly, less vehement than usual, but all of the fight seemed to have gone out of him. “What else could—”
Just as he was about to ask the question aloud, on the bed in front of him, Anna began to twitch, a little at first, then more and more violently.
“No, no, no, no, no, no, no,” he told her, even as the alarms started sounding on the monitors to which she was attached, and he was at the doorway, calling for help.
Doctors and other medical professionals came hurrying down the hallway toward where the police officers moved aside for them, and for their trolleys and equipment.
“Get him out of here,” one of the doctors ordered, and Sutherland felt his arms taken into gentle but unyielding grips as both police offices drew him out of the room, and along the hallway to a private waiting area.

Sein Partner Kanan Quamar hat ihm gleich nach seiner Rückkehr den überfälligen Antrag gemacht. “Noch am Abend meiner Heimkehr fiel er vor mir auf die Knie”, erklärte der Graf strahlend während eines Interviews.
Der Modedesigner und der Erfinder sind schon seit fünf Jahren ein Paar und viele Fans ihrer Arbeit haben sehnsüchtig auf diesen Moment gewartet. Laut Graf Whytlock wollte Quamar den Antrag wohl am Abend seines Geburtstages machen. Stellen Sie sich, liebe Leser, doch nur einmal dieses Spektakel vor! Gibt es ein schöneres Geburtstagsgeschenk als einen Verlobungsring? Wohl kaum!

Imperatoren verlangen Antworten: Was zieht eine Spur aus Leichen durch die Provinzen?

Trebizond • Eine weitere brutale Attacke auf eine Stadt erschüttert das adyanische Imperium. Jetzt schalten sich sogar die Zwillingsimperatoren selbst ein und entsenden Teile ihrer Imperialen Garde, um der Sache auf den Grund zu gehen.
Zuvor berichteten wir über Angriffe auf Barogard (Rustor) und Razra (Tamheller Provinz). Zwischen den beiden Städten zog sich eine Spur der Verwüstung durch kleinere Dörfer. Diese Spur führt nun noch weiter gen Norden und entlud sich in einem Massaker in der Handelsstadt Trebizond. Mittlerweile sind militärische Schachzüge auszuschließen. Doch noch immer ist unklar, was sonst für diese Zerstörung verantwortlich sein könnte. Augenzeugenberichte liefern keinerlei Aufschluss über den oder die Täter. Das Maß an Tod und Gewalt lässt auf eine wilde Bestie schließen, doch hinter all dem Chaos steckt eine gewisse Methodik. Die Tatsache, dass sich der oder die Täter auf etwas zubewegen, die Präzision der Angriffe, all das deutet auf eine intelligente Kreatur mit Bewusstsein hin.
Niemand weiß, wohin sich diese Spur der Vernichtung noch ziehen wird. Die Quelllandjäger und die Ehrengarde sind alarmiert und in Bereitschaft; Bewohnern der Provinzen nördlich von Trebizond wird zu erhöhter Vorsicht geraten.

Yama • In den vergangenen Wochen berichteten wir vermehrt über die Zunahme an Stürmen auf der Halbinsel Yama im Süden Letreshs. Nun können wir mit Freude verkünden, dass sich das Wetter zu beruhigen scheint. Wie uns Experten verraten, hat sowohl die Zahl, als auch die Kraft der Stürme wieder nachgelassen. Noch immer ist völlig unbekannt, warum das Wetter der Region auf einmal so verrückt spielte - noch verrückter als sonst. Chakravatin und Universalgenie Dipendra Devi selbst soll sich mit diesem Geheimnis beschäftigen. Für Laien sei jedoch gesagt: Die Zahl und Kraft der Stürme ist auf ein normales Niveau zurück gesunken und Indra, die Hauptstadt von Yama, hat ihren Teleporthafen wieder geöffnet, Reisewarnungen wurden aufgehoben.
Diese Nachricht sorgte für einen wahren Ansturm an Reisenden auf die Stadt. Viele Magier machten sich sofort auf den Weg in die Stadt der Stürme, um diesen seltsamen Wetterphänomen auf den Grund zu gehen oder um einen Blick auf einen seltenen Elder Tempest werfen zu können, der über der Halbinsel in den Wolken gesichtet worden sein soll. Auch viele Klatschbesessene strömten nach Indra, um von dort in Richtung Damaru, der Stadt der Toten, weiterzureisen. Diese Entwicklung ist wohl auf die Sichtung der Verlobten von Igetis Gradalis Vagonbrae zurückzuführen, die seither nicht noch einmal aufgetaucht ist.

Surya • Alle Jahre wieder erinnern sich die Bewohner der Vier Lande an die, die vor uns kamen.
Der Tag des Gedenkens wird auch dieses Jahr wieder breitflächig gefeiert. In Letresh mit leuchtenden, bunten Körperbemalungen, in Redo mit großen Festzügen aus gigantischen Marionetten, die allesamt manuell bedient werden. In Adrya feiert man ein wenig ruhiger, indem man mit der Familie zu einem großen Festessen zusammenkommt, bei dem traditionell auch für die Ahnen gedeckt wird.
Wir gedenken derer, die in der Schlacht der Götter kämpften. Wir gedenken derer, die ihr Leben für andere gaben. Wir gedenken all jenen, die uns von der Welt erzählten, uns an ihrer Weisheit und ihrem Wissen teilhaben ließen. Wir gedenken den Begründern unserer Familien. Aber wir trauern nicht, denn der Tag des Gedenkens ist kein trauriger Tag. Wir ehren die vergangenen Generationen und ihr Leben, blicken mit Respekt zurück. Denn eines Tages werden auch wir Teil der Vergangenheit sein und die Zukunft wird uns Respekt zollen. Wir lernen von unseren Vorgängern und wir lehren unsere Nachfolger.

Verdiente Beförderung: Selrose Academy benennt neue Professorin

Redo • Viele Magier dürften über die neueste Entwicklung an der Selrose Academy erfreut sein: Meisterin Ann Ava Hogwood wurde endlich ein Forschungsposten gewährt. Nach jahrelangem Hin und Her wurde ihre Arbeit nun endlich anerkannt.
Ann Ava Hogwood gilt als unkonventionelle Anwenderin mit weit gefächerten Interessen und unorthodoxen Theorien. Viele der alteingesessenen Magier der Selrose Academy lehnen ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit ab, bezeichneten sie in der Vergangenheit sogar als lachhaft. Doch Meisterin Hogwood fand schon immer viel Zusprache aus der allgemeineren Bevölkerung - solchen Magiern, denen der Umgang zwar beigebracht wurde, die sich aber nie darüber hinaus haben ausbilden lassen - da viele Teile ihrer Arbeit auf Alltagsmagie abzielen. Die Magierin gilt als herausragende Historikerin und orientiert sich mit ihrer Arbeit, die die Moderne revolutionieren soll, hauptsächlich an vergangenen Kulturen.
Nach dem überraschenden Ableben von Meisterin Zylpha Featherstone, die als Kultistin entblößt wurde und sich als Entführerin des beliebten Grafen Jennyngs Whytlock entpuppte, wurde eine Forschungsstelle an der Academy frei. Die Rufe der Unterstützer von Meisterin Hogwood wurden wahrgenommen und der Schulrat hat zu ihren Gunsten gestimmt. Damit lässt die unkonventionelle Magierin den konservativen Kandidaten Meister Algernon Wynch hinter sich zurück. Gerüchten zufolge sollen sich sogar schon Schüler der Akademie nach etwaigen Kursen bei ihr erkundigt haben. Steht uns vielleicht eine kleine Revolution in Sachen Magie ins Haus?

Hakari Nui • Der durchaus gerechtfertigt als verrückt bezeichnete Besitzer der größten Vergnügungsinsel des Kontinents hat einmal mehr für überraschte Gemüter gesorgt, als er verkündete, die Darsteller des berüchtigten Cirque d’Infini anzustellen. “Solch talentierte Geister darf man doch nicht wegen eines kleinen Fehltritts verurteilen”, so Keltip Zixum IV., “Sie werden bei mir ein hübsches Zuhause finden, das über jede Kriminalität erhaben ist.”
Die Schaustellergruppe war lange Zeit ein beliebtes Programm auf vielen Veranstaltungen der Oberklasse. Sie traten auf Bällen, Benefizveranstaltungen und sogar Amtseinführungen auf. Allerdings erlangten sie vor kurzem erst einen äußerst zweifelhaften Ruf, als sie für den Diebstahl verantwortlich gemacht wurden, in dessen Nachhall Graf Jennyngs Whytlock entführt wurde. Zwar hatte die Gruppe damit nichts zu tun, sehr wohl jedoch mit dem Diebstahl einiger sehr teurer Schmuckstücke. Ihr Talent ist allerdings nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Wie sonst hätten sich diese Leute einen Namen unter den Reichen und Mächtigen machen können? Der exzentrische Erbe des Vergnügungsimperiums Hakari Nui machte sich genau das jetzt zu Nutze. “Eine talentierte Gruppe, die niemand haben will. Das ist genau nach meinem Geschmack! Ich hatte schon immer ein Herz für Streuner, wissen Sie?”
Wir werden in Zukunft also wohl nichts mehr von diesem diebischen Zirkus zu hören bekommen. Sollten Sie sich selbst von den Fähigkeiten der Schausteller überzeugen wollen, so empfehlen wir eine Reise nach Hakari Nui. Keltip Zixum IV. informierte uns darüber, dass er den Cirque d’Infini so schnell wie möglich wieder auf die Bühne bringen will. Man kann also in wenigen Tagen mit der ersten Darstellung rechnen.

Just a little something for Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day. I know this day not a lot of people celebrate or fully realize the importance this day. I guess I really realize that we do need to give the respect to those who risk their lives for the freedom we have...cause without them who knows what world we would be living in now, and who really knows who would be even around/be born. So here's just one small respect I have for those who went into the wars (soldiers, nurses/doctors, even the animals who went along too).
