Avery do you think ghost would show his face to his partner? Ive seen many diffrent opinions on this and tbh i think he would. I hc him wanting to seperate his private life with his work so he probably doesn’t want his S/O anywhere near his gear or mask situation…u know what i mean? But idk i might be wrong

You and me both anon!! I'm with you, I believe the mask is almost a persona of sorts, it's how there is a separation between "Ghost" and Simon Riley, likely a coping mechanism for all Simon's gone through. But I also think he wears masks as an extra precaution for anonymity and privacy (yeah his file doesn't have his face but better safe than sorry, eh?). It's why at the end of MWII Simon is still wearing a mask with the 141 at a bar (yes they were discussing business but it definitely seemed like celebratory drinks to me)

THAT BEING SAID if Simon finally has a long term partner, he will definitely take off his mask when they're alone. It's a symbol of trust when he reveals his face to you, a level of intimacy that he doesn't even show many of his colleagues (and they have to entrust their lives to each other on the daily).

I'm just torn on how he'll go about it. On one hand, he could entirely separate his personal/dating life, when you first meet you know what he looks like although he may wear the occasional plain face mask in public. Even when you learn he's a soldier, you've never heard of this "Ghost" before and you never will, it's a part of him Simon would rather take to the grave. You know next to nothing about his military life, you'll likely never meet the rest of the task force despite how great they seem - you may hear allegories about them but Simon just needs that separation. You can only pick up pieces from when he wakes up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat and only you can comfort him, deciphering his broken mumbles all the while.

On the other hand, Simon's military life bleeds over everything, Ghost creates a suffocating blanket over his life that Simon can't fully pry off - even among civilians his face masks carry the motif of a skull. It becomes all he knows, all he can talk about. On the first date, the only experiences he can give is from his past missions. Even when you get closer, Ghost's irrationally terrified that showing his face will put a target on your back. You could do everything together, have promise rings, move in together, open a joint bank account and Ghost still won't show his face.

It'll take a lot of time, but you can teach Ghost of a life beyond the violence that consumed his past. That the whimsy and vulnerability of being an average human comes with benefits that he's never considered before. And that will be the moment, on a quiet night, he'll finally take off his mask and you can't help but smile. Simon's back.

I'm already know for being very opinionated and having some Hot Takes, but I still usually keep it in line and fairly reasonable. Typical "Unpopular (but still somewhat safe to voice) Opinion" territory, where I might get some blocks and some scowls, but like, nothing major.

However I'm... gonna be posting an uncharacteristically rancid take this time.

I cannot fucking STAND vibes based design. Its become a trend lately to explain game systems by vibes, and it feels EXACTLY like the tropification of romance novels. A thing so many other people have complained about far more than I have, where so many works of fiction are now just being advertise as "Its a queer little slow burn, found family story that features enemies to lovers" OKAY, BUT WHATS THE FUCKING BOOK ABOUT?

And I feel like over the past 15-20 years, the TTRPG industry has been having the exact same issue. I can go through dozens of listings on itch.io for indie games and not see a single fucking game mechanic mentioned, and its frustrating. "This game is about gathering your friends to turn your local farm into a sustainable commune!" WHAT KIND OF FUCKING DICE DOES THE GAME USE? DOES THE GAME EVEN HAVE A GM?

And like, this isn't just about the feel good warm and fuzzy games. OSR is JUST as fucking guilty in this. "This game is a black metal death crawl through your worst nightmares." IS IT A RETROCLONE? IS IT A RULES LITE D6 SYSTEM? HOW THE FUCK DO I RESOLVE AN ACTION? DO ENEMIES USE STATBLOCKS?

If a video game showed absolutely no gameplay in any of its advertisements, only showing concept trailers and cutscenes and talking about its plot, you would probably shy away and think the game isn't worth playing if it can't even stand on the merits of its own gameplay. So why the fuck are we accepting that as the norm in TTRPGs?

#special shout out to Avery Alder #Avery I fucking love your games #The Quiet Year is one of my favorite games ever #its pretty much my go-to for any campaign of any kind to give players control over the worldbuilding pre-session 0 #BOB is so well designed and such a rad way to handle diceless/GM-less design #and I ABSOLUTE understand the need for queer designers like us to carve out a space and stand our ground #in a hobby that has historically housed people who want people like us dead in a ditch #but the idea that BOB can only support inherently queer/marginalized stories is ABSURD #and the way every BOB game advertises itself/is listed on your site makes me want to tear my skin off #please #you designed a game #AN INCREDIBLE ONE at that!#please please let it stand on the merits of its own design instead of just the vibe its built for #I was about to post this on my game design blog...#but I really dont have the heart to do that. The Duke and his sons; the redesigns of some old ocs.

The idea is that they’re the sort of royalty of the feral cat population within an abandoned, coastal, European city and are one of several “houses”. They’ve fashioned their clothes from the carpets/furnishing of the more high end houses/apartments.

They’re named in order of succession, with Anton as the duke and his oldest son Avery as the next in line. Chances are these characters will change more as I develop their world, but I think this is a good first look at the concept :)
