Monster (Koreeda Hirokazu, 2023)
The real monster is a character who's not given narrative primacy. And also saving face, scapegoating and the monster that makes us deny an honest life. A multi-perspective, multi-sympathy narrative device that feels now commonplace but Koreeda weaves it better than anyone to build, misdirect, catch out and reward. Kids remaining true throughout. While still an extremely talented filmmaker and perceptive to human unsaids, maybe i'm falling out with him recently. More falling in with this than out with Broker, however.

does anyone else base their self worth on their school grades but is too depressed to try hard or care so they’re just stuck in a loop of anxiety and procrastination and stress and depression and blood, sweat and tears or is that just me
