Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah Men to Mentor Campaign
Volunteer Opportunities in Utah: Help Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah Recruit 45 Male Mentors in 45 Days
Introduction
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is a nonprofit organization that empowers youth in the State of Utah through mentorship. Each year, the organization hosts a campaign called “Men to Mentor” to recruit male mentors. Find volunteer opportunities in Utah and become a mentor for the young men in the community. The campaign is focused on finding enough male mentors to be matched with boys on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah waiting list. With 45 boys on the current waiting list, BBBSU is searching for 45 male mentors in 45 days. The campaign runs from July 12 to August 25th.
The Significance of "Men to Mentor" Campaign
The "Men to Mentor" Campaign holds profound significance for our community.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, they firmly believe that mentorship plays a pivotal role in shaping a child's life. A child’s early years can have lifelong physical, social, and emotional impacts. This is especially vital for young boys, as they benefit greatly from having positive male role models. When boys have supportive and caring mentors, they are empowered to navigate life's challenges, develop self-confidence, and unleash their full potential.
5 Benefits of Male Mentorship for Youth
Youth male mentorship profoundly and positively impacts young boys, offering them invaluable guidance and unwavering support. Below are three benefits youth experience from having a male mentor:
1. Navigating their Self-Identity: Male mentors cultivate a secure and nurturing space for boys to freely express themselves, fostering a deep sense of self-assurance and strong, positive self-worth. The National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environment states, “Mentoring relationships are seen to create opportunities for youth to gain role models and support that help them navigate through phases of cultural and racial identity development.”
2. Support System: Many Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah mentees come from refugee backgrounds or from difficult at-home circumstances, often leaving youth without strong or large support systems. Having a male mentor can become a positive presence in their lives.
3. Gaining Positive Figures: Many boys may lack an example figure in their lives. A mentor can bridge that gap by exemplifying positive behaviors, values, and attitudes. This role modeling helps shape young people's understanding of masculinity and encourages them to develop healthy habits and positive self-esteem.
4. Emotional Support and Guidance: Male mentors provide crucial emotional support and guidance to youth. Adolescence can be a tumultuous time filled with challenges and uncertainties. Having a caring and understanding male mentor allows young individuals to confide in someone they trust, seek advice during difficult situations, and navigate complex emotions with a supportive companion. This emotional support fosters resilience and helps the youth build healthier coping mechanisms, leading to improved mental well-being.
5. Reduced Risk of Addiction: Research, according to The Blue Heart Foundation, shows that youth with a mentor are less likely to participate in addictive substances, including drugs and alcohol later on in their lives. The Blue Heart Foundation states, “The caring relationships they build with mentors help them avoid high-risk behavior by making them less susceptible to unhealthy influences.”
How You Can Join the "Men to Mentor" Campaign
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is calling on compassionate and driven individuals to join BBBSU’s volunteer opportunities in Utah and become mentors for the 45 boys on their waiting list. BBBSU needs your help to help them find 45 mentors for these boys in 45 days!

Supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah Through Corporate Clothing Drives
Volunteering Opportunities in Utah: Giving Back to your Community at Work
Your company has the power to make a positive impact on the lives of children and teenagers in Utah! At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah (BBBSU), we firmly believe in the transformative power of mentorship and the role that corporate partners play in shaping a brighter future for our youth. For those looking for volunteering opportunities in Utah, one of the ways you can contribute to our mission is through corporate clothing drives. By participating in these drives, you not only foster a sense of community within your organization but also directly support our efforts in providing mentorship and guidance to young individuals.
How can your company get involved and support BBBSU through corporate clothing drives? Let's explore the steps and benefits of participating in this meaningful initiative:
Step 1: Rally Your Employees for the Clothing Drive
The first step is to let your employees know about the upcoming clothing drive and encourage their participation. You can do this through email announcements, posters in common areas, or during company meetings. Excite your team about the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in need and inspire them to clean out their closets for a good cause.
Step 2: Arrange Collection Barrels for Donations
To facilitate the clothing drive, BBBSU will provide collection barrels to your company. Placing 2-4 barrels, with one barrel per floor, is a recommended approach to increase convenience and visibility. These barrels will serve as a constant reminder of the ongoing drive and motivate employees to contribute.
Step 3: Schedule Donation Pick-ups with BBBSU
Once your clothing drive is underway, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah will coordinate regular pick-ups to collect the donated items. Typically, we schedule pick-ups once a week, ensuring a smooth and efficient process. However, if your company generates a high volume of donations and requires more frequent pick-ups, simply give us a call, and we'll gladly accommodate your needs.
The regular pick-ups will keep the donations flowing and maintain enthusiasm among employees, knowing that their contributions are making a meaningful impact.
Step 4: Set the Duration of the Clothing Drive
Corporate clothing drives typically span 1-2 weeks, but the duration can be adjusted based on your company's preferences and the response from employees. Longer drives can result in a larger collection of donations, while shorter ones can create a sense of urgency and prompt immediate action.
Regardless of the duration, every piece of clothing donated will make a difference in a young life, and your company's efforts will be greatly appreciated.
Step 5: Donate Preferred Clothing Items
BBBSU appreciates a wide range of gently-used clothing items. Some of the items we love receiving include:
- Used clothes in good condition
- Tops and sweaters
- Pants and shorts
- Footwear (shoes, sneakers, etc.)
- Hats
- Bags and backpacks
- Belts
- Bedding (sheets, pillowcases)
- Blankets
- Towels
These donations directly benefit the mentees, providing them with essential clothing items to boost their confidence and self-esteem.
Step 6: Enjoy the Benefits of Corporate Sponsorship

This recognition showcases your commitment to making a positive impact on the community and aligning with a cause that promotes youth empowerment and mentorship.

What Activities Do Bigs and Littles Do Together?
At Big Brothers Big Sister of Utah, adult mentors (Bigs) help children 6-18 years old (Littles) reach their potential through mentoring programs. Through these volunteer opportunities in Utah, Bigs spend quality time with a Little who has similar interests while doing fun activities. Here are 9 ideas of activities mentors do together with their Littles that are exciting and inexpensive for a variety of ages and interests.
Indoor
For times when being inside is easier, activities for Bigs and Littles can seem to be limited, but that is not the case. If Littles enjoy reading,  Bigs and Littles can go to the library and read a book together. Playing music or learning a new song together is a good option if music is more their style. For those interested in cuisine, baking a treat is something fun to do together.
Outdoor
When weather permits, activities outside provide good opportunities for relationship-building activities. In Utah, there is no shortage of activities to do outside. For Littles who like to play and be active, some ideas include going to the park, going on a bike ride, or going on a kid-friendly hike up in the mountains.
For the Season
In the springtime, there are unique opportunities for activities. The trees are in bloom, and the weather is not too hot yet. To take advantage of this time, some ideas of activities to do together include planting flowers for plant lovers, playing sports outside for athletes, or going on a picnic to soak in the warm sun.
Mentor a Little
Volunteer opportunities in Utah like these are important to building a strong community. With Big Brothers Big Sister of Utah, Bigs and Littles can enjoy things they both enjoy while simultaneously learning from one another and creating a bond. There are activities for every pair of Bigs and Littles, so now is the time to go and do! To become involved as a Big, visit https://bbbsu.org/.

10 Things to Know Before Becoming a Big**
Are you looking to volunteer in Utah? Nonprofit organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah offer numerous opportunities to volunteer in Utah with youth through one-on-one mentoring programs. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah believes that investing time with our youth is investing in our future. Individuals over 18 looking to mentor youth are called “Bigs.” By becoming a Big, you can change a child's life, and possibly yours too!
Here are ten things to know before becoming a Big:
Research shows that kids with a long-term mentor are more likely to stay in school and avoid risky behavior; for this reason, Bigs are required to be a mentor for a minimum of one year.
Make sure you have reliable transportation. Bigs must meet with their Little throughout the month and transport themselves there.
Bigs are matched with Littles based on interests and likes.
Do you have time to dedicate towards a Little? Bigs must set aside time from their schedules to spend time with their mentee. Make sure there are specific times during the week that you are available to meet.
Are you married or have a significant other? Make sure your partner or spouse is supportive of you being in the program. Or, you can volunteer as a ‘Big Couple’ and mentor a Little Brother.
Do you plan on staying in the area for the next year? Location is a factor that impacts the success of matches in BBBSU programs.
You don’t necessarily need experience with kids to be a Big. You do not need special skills to be a Big. Successful Bigs should be caring, consistent, and willing.
Potential Bigs will undergo an application process. Potential Bigs will be screened and have a background check.
On average, Bigs will spend six to eight hours of mentoring each month.
The matching process may take some time. Please be patient, as BBBSU takes the time to match you with the right mentee carefully!

Why Mentoring Matters in the Lives of Children
Each of us can develop, learn, transform, and achieve goals through volunteering. Volunteer opportunities in Utah are available for individuals looking to make an impact in their own lives and in the lives of others.
Organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, are searching for volunteers to mentor youth in Utah. Mentoring helps create a vibrant community and ensures that individuals succeed as they pursue their personal goals. The long-term and immediate benefits of the supportive, healthy connections developed between mentors and mentees are numerous. For instance:
The Advantages of Mentoring for Children
Improved Relationships
Children who develop ties with mentors learn to establish positive boundaries and form bonds with others. Spending time with an adult, not a member of their immediate family, helps children develop communication and interpersonal skills, which are essential for relationships in childhood and adulthood.
Increased confidence and self-esteem
Many children struggle to keep up a positive sense of self-worth and self-assurance. They can better see themselves and appreciate their abilities and accomplishments with a supportive mentoring relationship.
Benefits of Mentoring for Adults
Understanding Children
Mentors are able to learn more about children as one advantage of mentoring. Because of the time they spend with their mentees, they subsequently improve their relationships with the kids in their lives.
New Relationships
When volunteers in Utah participate in a program like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah mentorship program, they frequently develop relationships with other people as well. From getting to know other adult mentors, to BBBSU staff, to the family and friends of their Little, being a mentor helps to build your network in the community. Our mentors not only benefit from forming bonds with the at-risk adolescents they work with, but they also gain from networking with other grownups who share their passion for transforming the lives of children.
Underserved youth are given secure, dependable adult relationships through mentoring relationships. Mentors acquire perspective, self-confidence, and a genuine sense of success from knowing they have changed someone's life. 5 Reasons Mentorship is Important
Mentorship plays an essential role in the development of young people and the communities they live in. Here are five reasons why:
1. Mentorship Provides Young People with Role Models to Look Up to and Learn From
Mentorship gives young people positive role models to look up to and learn from. Mentors help young people develop essential life skills, such as communication and problem-solving, and provide guidance on navigating the challenges of growing up. Mentorship also helps young people build self-confidence and self-esteem and encourages them to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
There are opportunities to volunteer in Utah with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah as a mentor and be a role model to children in Utah. There are over 70 children on the waiting list waiting for a mentor.
2. Helps Young People Develop a Sense of Identity and Belonging
Through mentorship, young people learn about themselves. They also develop positive relationships with role models and mentors who support and guide them. In addition, mentorship helps young people build skills and confidence and learn how to navigate life's challenges. Ultimately, mentorship helps young people become happy, successful adults.
3. Helps Young People Develop Their Skills and Confidence
Mentorship helps young people develop their skills and confidence by providing guidance and support from an experienced individual. This allows them to learn new things and develop their abilities in a supportive environment. Additionally, mentorship helps young people build their confidence by allowing them to practice and improve their skills in a safe and supportive setting.
4. Helps Young People Make Positive Choices in Their Lives
By having someone to look up to and confide in, young people have shown that they can develop a positive outlook on life and learn to make more positive decisions. A mentor provides guidance and support, offers advice and encouragement, and acts as a sounding board for ideas. Mentorship helps young people feel connected and valued and gives them the confidence to pursue their dreams.
5. Helps Build Stronger Communities by Bringing People of All Ages and Backgrounds Together
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah offers opportunities for adults to volunteer in Utah and act as mentors for Utah kids on a one-to-one mentorship model. By pairing older, more experienced community members with younger people, mentorship programs help create a more diverse and well-rounded community. This intergenerational exchange helps to build bridges between different groups within the community and also helps to mentor the next generation of community leaders.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month is the period observed in the United States from the 15th of September to the 15th of October yearly in honor of Hispanic culture, history, and contributions with ancestral links to Mexico, Spain, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean. Those looking for Volunteer Opportunities in Utah can look into Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah and take advantage of this month to celebrate their community.
Who Started the Hispanic Heritage Month?
The National Hispanic Heritage Week was first introduced in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Later in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded this observation to cover 30 days beginning the 15th of September to the 15th of October. On the 17th of August 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law with the approval of Public Law 100-402.
Why it Covers Two Months
President Johnson's 1968 Proclamation cited that the 15th of September was the day five Latin American countries (Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) earned independence in 1821 from Spain. Since Mexico, Chile, and Belize gained their freedom on the 16th, 18th, and 21st of September from Spain and the U.K., the mid-September date remained after being extended from one week to one month.
How People in the U.S. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage
Although the official government website maintains a calendar of highlighted activities, from art festivals to concerts and parades, Americans can make the best use of organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah and the volunteer opportunities in Utah during this time. Furthermore, Americans enjoy most of these festivals since they are family-friendly and occur locally, and most are free.
Final Word
While honoring the traditions and culture of Americans tracing their roots to Mexico, Spain, etc., through concerts, parades, and festivals is vital, using Volunteer Opportunities in Utah to maximum advantage during this period also impacts the community positively.

During the summer, children have the opportunity to develop reading habits that may help increase advanced reading abilities and promote a lifelong enjoyment of reading. Organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah seek adult volunteers to become mentors to children and help them with life development. Through volunteer opportunities in Utah with BBBSU, adult mentors called ‘Bigs’ are encouraged to spend time with their ‘Little,’ or mentee, all year around and during the summer. Time spent together can include summer reading, hiking, visiting a museum together, and so much more.

3 Hardships LGBTQ+ Youth Today Face
Tumblr media
The LGBTQ+ community has continued to gain traction, recognition, and understanding. Although the community grows, LGBTQ+ youth can still face judgment, prejudice, and negativity. This can cause hardships among kids as they can be discriminated against. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah offers volunteer opportunities in Utah that focus on ensuring these kids have support during their hardships.
Here are three examples of hardships LGBTQ+ youth today face:
1. Social Media
LGBTQ+ youth are at higher risk of experiencing abuse from peers, family, and others, especially online. The internet allows people to feel they can say things without consequence, increasing the chance of people being rude and hateful. 64% of social media users who are LGBTQ+ have experienced hate speech in their social media experience. This is a hardship they face today that needs continuous awareness and help.
2. Mental Health
LGBTQ+ kids face bullying and abuse far more often than others their age; thus, their mental health is often affected. Studies have shown that kids belonging to the LGBTQ+ community are at an increased risk of depression and anxiety. People who identify as transgender are more likely to deal with anxiety disorders. Overall, the community faces more suicidal thoughts than those outside of it due to the pressure and prejudice they receive from others.
3. Need for Support
In a time of prejudice, it is essential to have places that provide support. Here are some areas that offer such sponsorship that you can guide LGBTQ+ youth.
GLADD: a social media, TV, and movie recommendation platform that focuses on the queer community.
GLSEN is an education support service that helps students of all orientations and genders with their education goals and directions.
The Q card project is a tool the LGBTQ+ community can use for health communication and connection.
Q Chat Space is a digital LGBTQ+ center where teens join live-chat, professionally facilitated, online support groups.
The It Gets Better Project inspires people across the globe to share their stories and remind the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth that hope is out there, and it will get better.
These are issues to be aware of and work towards solving. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, mentors strive to help youth that may face these challenges. If you are searching for volunteer opportunities in Utah that focus on supporting LGBTQ+ youth, visit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah’s website.
