OHOHOHOHO YES

Romana throws her hands up. "Damn computer," she complains, staring at a glitching screen and she doesn't want to call in tech support for the third time this week, but the new log system hasn't been integrating well and she is not one of the few who seems to so naturally know the ins and outs. Sometimes she feels that she will never catch up on technology.

A low voice at the door clears its throat and Romana doesn't even look up. She knows exactly who it is, one of the only other people besides security and maintenance who would still be here at this hour. "Hullo, Brax," she says softly, distracted by holding down control, alt, and delete.

"Commisioner," he greets, ever proper when doors are open. He waits for an invitation through hers, she thinks, like a vampire, but less violent. She doesn't know that he's ever fired his weapon in the line of service. What she doesn't know won't hurt her.

Finally, she looks up and rolls her eyes. "Do come in, Brax. Close the door on your way in," she adds, knowing that's the only way she'll ever see him for how he really is. Really, she has no clue how Leela manages to see through him, see through all of them, all the time. A better detective than Romana ever was on the force, she thinks. The Doctor always carried the weight for her, she thinks.

And now his brother is standing over her, carrying that wiry dark shadow around in the Doctor's absence. The few times she was around the both of them, their double shadows almost matched up enough to make just one. It had made her feel small, then. It doesn't now. She knows there's much, much darker, now. Sometimes sunlight still seems too bright.

"Heading home, are you?" Asks Romana, looking up at Brax.

"Hm." He hums, vaguely affirmative, then walks around to behind her to peer at her computer screen. "Matrix trouble?" He asks, conversationally.

Romana nods. "I'm sure I'm not the only one. IT has had their hands full ever since we began integrating."

"Might I," Brax hesitates, "Attempt to help?"

"Have at it. I've about given up," says Romana.

Brax leans over the desk and over Romana's shoulder, reaching out one hand to brace himself and the other to peck at the keyboard. A few sharp clicks, keystrokes Romana takes note of as he one-handedly types them, and her screen clears. Romana turns to look approvingly over her shoulder at Brax and ends up nearly nose to nose with him.

"There we have it, my lady," he says softly. She doesn't know why he calls her that. From anyone else, it might be mocking. Brax only began calling her lady after Etra, so she knows it's not.

"There we have it," she echoes back. "Brax."

Well...one of the writers writing a DD fake marriage fanfic was not on my bingo card for 2024, but when has anything ever been! (Thank you for tagging me @anawkwardgalnamedtarazan )

I'm lucky that my students are on Spring Break this week, because I reaallly wanted to work hard on this piece! I referenced a really intimate Swing Dance pic for the pose so I hope that came across nicely! Also, if I remember correctly I believe it said that KD was in a pink and white suit, instead of his regular purple, and I just HAD to draw that! ^^ I couldn't decide if The Devil would be really extra and wear a gigantic princess style dress, or if he'd be really extra and wear a more revealing dress. Either way, he was gonna be extra! I hope ya like it :)

oh they have so many fantastic interactions, I love them very much. this is set a few months into their partnership, VERY shortly after Andred's witness protection/vigilante undercover thing has been revealed, so it might be a little more angsty than what you were aiming for.

Leela does not smoke cigarettes, so this is not a smoke break. It is a... letting off steam break. She is standing outside the parking garage, far enough down the street that anyone would have to walk most of a block to even begin to find her, and she wishes she had something to hit that would not break her hand. If she did swing at the wall, though, perhaps her fists would match her heart.

"Leela." Braxiatel says from somewhere behind her, like he had the first time they met. Detective Leela, we need you. Back then, she had despaired, but she had still had hope. Now, she has nothing, and no careful, calculated offers of purpose or friendship that she does not believe in will give her back her hopes or her heart.

She resents Braxiatel suddenly more than she resents anyone save for her former husband. She resents the man, dark-clad and shadowy, who has replaced the man her Andred was. She resents everything that Braxiatel, her partner who gave her a place and a purpose, represents.

"Leela," he calls again, closer, and Leela roars a ragged cry and lashes out. She is small, next to Brax, but he cannot, or will not, overpower her, even if she aimed to truly hurt. As it is, she simply curls her hands into fists and hits him, over and over, as if she is simply attacking him like a punching bag, beating wildly against his chest and he simply allows her to rage out all her hurt and anger onto him. She thinks she could kill him, right now, and he would let her.

She thinks maybe that is some kind of love, and she drops her fists. "I am sorry," she says, finally. She has not cried. She will not cry. Her eyes are dry like her heart has shriveled up inside her.

Brax hums. He does this often, little melodic sounds that are not quite words, but are also a type of language. "No matter," he replies, voice matter of fact but quiet, here at a corner of a parking garage where they cannot be seen. "I'm sorry, also," he adds, and one of his hands momentarily brushes her back. "I am sorry."

No contraction. Three words, so very different from the three words she will never hear nor speak again, but so very similar all the same.
