"May I ask why he has an ice pack on his ass?" Robin asked as she walked in the front door of the apartment and took in Steve's position flat on his stomach on the couch.

"You may ask. You may not want the answer, though," Eddie replied as he brought Steve a glass of water. "Robin's here, sweetheart."

"She's early," he mumbled against the pillow.

"She's setting up for your party, dingus," Robin said from behind the couch, leaning down to look at him.

He turned his head to the side and glanced up.

"Eddie fucked me too much," he sighed.

"He kept begging for more! It's his birthday! What am I gonna do, not give him more?" Eddie threw his hands up. "How was I supposed to know six times was too many?"

Robin shook her head. "How is that even possible? No, never mind. Don't answer that. Should we postpone the party?"

"No, the kids would be upset."

"Can you get up?"

Steve groaned. "Give me ten more minutes."

Eddie and Robin shared a look before Eddie dropped down to his knees next to the couch. "Sweetheart, what if we just change it to tomorrow? We can tell them you woke up with a migraine. All the food will still be good. Robin can still set up some of the decorations while she's here."

"But then it isn't my birthday anymore," Steve pouted at him.

"We can celebrate your birthday all week if you want, Stevie."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

Eddie leaned down to kiss his forehead and ignored Robin's gagging noises.

"You're both disgusting. I'm gonna call everyone. Have you learned your lesson or is this gonna happen next year?"

"I'm aiming for seven next year."

"Thanks for coming. Take care. Okay, yeah, see you soon!"

Steve waves his visitors goodbye while slowly pushing at the door, exhaling deeply when it finally snaps close. He's exhausted, feels mentally drained and ready for bed despite it only being late afternoon.

Robin, Dustin, and Co came by to surprise him for his birthday and even brought cake. But he couldn't really enjoy himself, not when the most important person is missing.

Eddie is currently on tour with Corroded Coffin to promote their upcoming first record. And Steve's happy for him, of course, he is. It's everything Eddie ever wanted and what kind of boyfriend would he be not to support him unconditionally. But he misses him, especially today.

Steve woke up feeling weirdly emotional. Not because of the whole 'getting older' part, it's just- another year has gone by and he still hasn't figured out what to do with his life. He'll be stuck in Hawkins forever while Eddie is out there successfully chasing his dreams, will undoubtedly soon take off to conquer the world and-

The doorbell rings, drags Steve out of his thoughts.

"Forgot something Henderson?"

"Surprise!"

Steve thinks he must be dreaming when he's greeted by another familiar face.

"Eddie?! Aren't you supposed to- Why are you here?"

"Couldn't miss my boyfriend's birthday, could I?"

"But what about-" Eddie silences him with a deep kiss.

"We took two days off. Gotta go back tomorrow."

"You came all this way just to be with me for one day?"

"I'd do anything for you. I love you, baby."

Steve feels tears burning in his eyes, his heart is bursting with love as he realises: it doesn't matter where their life will take them, they'll always be together.

Steve stared through the window at the tiny bundle wrapped up in front of them, tearing up only a little at the sound of another lullaby wafting through the hospital intercom. Robert Wayne Munson remained oblivious to anything in the bassinet. The tiny blue hat perched on his head almost completely covered his even tinier eyes. His nose is so small, can he even breathe okay through those mini nostrils? “He looks like a potato.” Startled out of his spiraling thoughts, Steve snorted a watery laugh and punched Eddie lightly in the shoulder. “Only 3 hours old and already facing the peanut gallery. Don’t be mean to our son on his birthday.” Eddie looked around before he briefly squeezed his hand, stroking his thumb over the band from their illegal backyard wedding five years ago. “I never said he was an ugly potato. But he’s an oval swaddled lump, they’ve spudified him! Our-” Eddie stopped for a moment, his eyes widening before choking out “Our son. Steve, oh my G-d, we’re parents now.” Steve had been a blubbering mess alongside Robin during the entire ride to the hospital and delivery, but Eddie had managed to keep it together. Now, it was as if the floodgates opened. By the time the nurses brought their infant — their son! — back into Robin’s room, Wayne had arrived and Eddie pulled himself together enough to take the baby into only slightly shaking hands. “Hey there, happy birthday little guy, I hope you know how much you’re going to be loved, always” he whispered softly as he ducked his head down to place a soft kiss on his son’s forehead. Steve stepped in to place a kiss in the same spot, his heart bursting.
