“Hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment was stolen.”

Beatrice knows this tone. She’s heard it before in a lot of different settings. At the dinner table when she spoke out of line.

After a department fundraiser when she spent too much time with the pretty girl from the fire department.

In front of everyone at her twenty-third birthday when she told her father she didn’t want to follow his footsteps to the CIA.

When she told him she wanted to be a police officer just because she knew it would piss him off in the most delightful way.  

This was the tone her father used when there was no argument to be made. “I can do this,” she says - knowing she needs to believe it in order for him to believe it.

“The importance of this assignment is paramount.”

“I understand,” she nods, holding her hands in her lap as she sits in a very uncomfortable chair, feeling like she’s being interrogated.

He told her this might happen as soon as she was prepared to graduate. He told her to be ready.

“Despite passing all of your entry exams with flying colors, you are not an officer, not yet.” The other person in the room is Chief Reya, the chief of the police department. “If you agree to this assignment, your transcripts at the academy will be altered. Officially, you’ll have failed your entry into this department. Unofficially, you will have one job. To infiltrate the underground crime circuit that has pushed this city beyond its limits.”

Beatrice finds it humorous that Chief Reya is talking about this as though she has an option.

With her father standing right there, the decision has already been made.

the basic premise (and bear with me here. just bear with me.) is that jisung died pretty young and his parents uploaded his consciousness to a simulation, and minho is the AI interface programmed to take care of him so that he doesn't get lonely. jisung doesn't know that he's dead, and from his perspective he just lives in a little house on the beach with minho and they watch the sea and collect shells and minho reads to him in the evenings and everything is good and the summer is beautiful.

spoiler: something external fucks with the simulation and jisung begins to realise where he is, while minho tries desperately to keep taking care of him. it's summer nostalgia that turns into the mild psychological horror of realising that your world isn't real, combined with the romance of realising that the person who's always taken care of you is still there and always will be.

it's a lot! i'm aware that it's a lot! but i am DESPERATE to try to write it because it could be stylistically fascinating <3
