i've been thinking about this on and off all morning, but i think i pinpointed the reason q!forever / /q!jaiden storyline happening right now has left me so frustrated, and why ultimately… it's good storytelling, i just dislike it. this is nothing against the ccs, i have the utmost respect to them, i am critising fictional characters.

a) there's two women on the server, and while q!forever's criticism of q!jaiden most likely wouldn't have gotten such a kneejerk reaction from me, when juxtaposed with the notion of a grieving mother being obsessive / suspicious for expressive her grief privately… it's hard to swallow. and hey, i firmly believe q!forever would be suspicious of ANYONE in q!jaiden's position, so it's not on him. it's just uncomfortable to watch as a viewer bc god forbid women express strong emotions in a way people find distasteful.

b) it makes emotional sense from q!forever, but no logical sense, and yet he justifies his suspicion with logic. nah, fam, you're just deeply traumatised -- that's okay. but what q!cellbit did was sneaky, slimy, and giving god complex (i love q!cellbit but dude is fucked). q!jaiden has been infinitely more honest in the brief interactions they had than q!cellbit ever was. you don't have to agree with her or her motives, but if q!cellbit got the benefit of the doubt so should she.

c) his paranoia is understandable, but extreme to the point where suspicion is becoming fact and it's just… an uncomfortable watch. i'm a sub, i've been watching the streams daily since the brazillian creators arrived, but man it was rough. everyone is being painted with the same brush, and his stubbornness and unwillingness to talk to bad (because saying what you think and not listening to the other side isn't talking) is deeply frustrating. q!max suddenly being more trustworthy than baghera and bad is wild, and he's giving these people very little grace. it's jarring.

d) in the end, i don't think this will have consequences if his behaviour persists, but i hope it does. i want to see characters go off the deep end in their pursuit of what they think is right, and burning all bridges until they realise they're alone. if that's where the story is going, i hope q!forever absolutely loses his shit bc it's… where it's headed right now.

i love this whole scene for many reasons (it's another example of dunnett just being really good at writing confrontations), but it's kind of heartbreaking that at this point in the story the men around nicholas have barely any sympathy for him?

it's like they only see the machiavellian mastermind, and that part of nicholas is there, but in this moment specifically he's a 21 y.o with high fever laying in bed being accused of terrible things that don't even make sense.

tobie takes care of his body, and godscalc tries to take care of his soul, but what ties them to nicholas, besides duty, is curiosity. and i think sometimes that makes them regard him with coldness, because nicholas is there to be studied. tobie is constantly analyzing him like he's a character in a novel (heh) instead of a real human being.

this being a reread, though, it's rewarding to read scenes like this knowing these same characters end up, however reluctantly, being very loyal to nicholas and following him not for duty or curiosity, but genuine affection. no one is immune to the oak tree with dimples (except his father and grandfather, i guess. yikes)

Thank you for once again having the sanest takes on female characters. I know very little about CSM but this whole thing is fucking goofy to me. Kobeni kinda sounds like a female equivalent of Shinji to me so I guess I shouldn't be as surprised that people are going 'wait why is this traumatized character traumatized instead of sexe'

oh yeah Shinji is a good comparison actually, only make it so Shinji is a side character instead of the main one so we don't get too many glimpses into their inner thoughts, so we only really know what Kobeni tells us...and what we learn ain't pretty.

And yeah the reaction is such a headache, a headache I fully anticipated, but still a headache. I think the most perplexing take I've seen is that some people want and/or expect her to get a redemption arc or something.

...redemption from what? to be redeemed for what? For cracking under the pressure of a nightmarish situation? For being scared for her life?

For trying to stab Denji? Assholes, what, you think you wouldn't try and stab someone in a scenario like that if you thought it would get you out of it?

Kobeni is stuck in a profession she is heinously emotionally unqualified for against her will, she's a normal person surrounded by anime characters in a horror sienen disguising itself as a shonen manga.

Give the girl a fucking break. She's the universe's chew toy, and here I am gleefully spoiling one thing about CSM to piss off people who don't like Kobeni: She doesn't die. Ever. She is like the one person in this whole story with unbreakable plot armor.

The awesome twist is that she very desperately doesn't want it.

Honestly, imodna would be a good ship if the shippers/stans weren’t so damn insufferable. I also hate how they act like they are already canon and you can’t ship Imogen or Laudna with anyone else in the group. People got so mad when the conversation in the dust storm happened with Ashton and Laudna because people thought they were flirting. Or when on the first episode of 4 sided dive Marisha asked Robbie if Dorian’s crush was on Imogen, people got so mad at that! I also hate that they call them lesbians when THEY HAVE BOTH EXPRESSED HAVING FEELINGS FOR BOYS! Why can’t they be bi? Or Pan? I also hate how people read into Laura’s micro expressions/ movements, like last episode with the whole leaning shit “oh what was that lean Laura?!! Imogen wanted to kiss Laudna because look at Laura’s lean!” I dread the day that Imogen or Laudna fall in love with someone that’s not each other(especially if that person is a man.) because Marisha and Laura will harassed and hated because they didn’t give the people what they wanted.

oof. that's some frustration you really needed to vent, nonnie, and honestly i get it. full disclosure—my mutuals who are into imo/dna are all lovely, and none of them engage in this behavior. if imo/dna becomes canon, i'll be happy for (and potentially even happy with) fans like that. but enough shippers are doing things like this that it's becoming more and more of a source of frustration and friction as the campaign goes on.

i think a lot of fandom—in general, not just cr—still doesn't want to acknowledge that at the end of the day, they are looking at things like shippers, with a particular kind of confirmation bias. it doesn't make them necessarily wrong or right, but as easy as it can be to get swept up in it, i think it's important to take a step back every once in awhile and re-evaluate.

now admittedly, generally speaking, it takes a lot for me to get really invested in a ship; i usually only have one or two per fandom, even fandoms with tons of characters. i'm generally pretty passive about most ships if it's not the otp; like, vax/leth and pike/lan, for example, didn't need to be romantic endgame for me to enjoy CR1 (and honestly might have been more interesting to me if they hadn't), but perc/ahlia absolutely made the show for me and i honestly think them being together actively strengthens the narrative as a whole.

i say all that to say that for the most part, i very much consider myself to be along for the ride with respect to most relationships in most fandoms. if such-and-such pairing happens, great; if they don't, okay. and with CR in particular, it's such a long-form medium that i know going in that any romance is going to take a while, and most of them probably won't just reach out and grab me.

and as such, it absolutely baffles me to have seen shippers insisting, from the moment the characters first appeared in episode 1, that not only are imogen and laudna canon endgame, they're basically already together and just haven't admitted it yet. i feel this way about dor/ym and callow/moore as well—i saw a post making the rounds that claimed that all three of those ships are "not canon YET but let's be real" and like...why would you set yourself up for disappointment like that? because yeah! all three of those ships could be endgame! but they could also not be endgame. we're less than 40 episodes into a campaign that'll probably run well into the 100s.

i also fully agree with you re: the microexpressions and the cherrypicking, and i feel like a microcosm of this issue can be found in a conversation imogen has with orym early on—shippers latched onto the fact that imogen compares laudna's thoughts to music, something that finally brought her peace after the chaos of the world around her, and completely ignored the part immediately after where imogen says that the rest of the party also feels like that to her. i didn't even know that imogen said that about the whole party until i watched the episode, and to me it's an example of how shippers tend to warp canon interactions to suit a particular narrative in such a way that they become almost entirely divorced from their context.

and from the outside looking in, what confuses me about this sort of thing is like...didn't y'all already go through this? because if my understanding is correct, c2 ship discourse was full to the brim with beau/jes and wido/jest fans dissecting "laura's microexpressions" to prove that jester was for sure in love with our fave, really you guys we swear...and then not only was that not true, but jester also didn't even know about beau or caleb's feelings to acknowledge them at all, and from the actual words that came out of laura's mouth in various OOC moments like on TM, laura just...really really wanted to romance her husband's character in her dnd game and like, that's it. there was never going to be another romantic option for jester as long as fjord was on the table, and that was something that shippers always should have been taking into account.

laudna and imogen are canonically deeply important to each other. they love and appreciate each other very much. that love and appreciation could turn into a lovely romance with a great dynamic, and i certainly don't blame people for being invested in it. but it also could not be romantic endgame, and they remain friends or even get with other people. and as you said, fandom can and will turn nasty about their ships being sunk; we've already seen it happen. there's a certain smug, entitled undercurrent from that particular corner that i have very little patience with, and while i think there's something to be said for deciding to enjoy things in spite of the fandom and just be a cranky old curmudgeon shooing the wank out with a broom, i also understand the response of just "...aight, imma head out".

opinion: ro’s character might be a lot more useful narrative-wise if her being a microbiologist wasn’t just acknowledged, but explored. 

in the books, we see her show the characters (and consequently, the reader) that she knows what she’s doing, and that ogres pride themselves on having a lot of knowledge when it comes to microbiology. particularly using that knowledge to make effective weapons, both almost harmless and lethal. 

but there’s so much more potential w/ ogre microbiology than just them having good weapons because of it. ogres (authorities, at least, like ro) being interested enough in expanding their microbiology knowledge that they’d be willing to collaborate more with other species? like how they cooperated with lady cadence on figuring out how soporidine works? it could open so many doors! 

we could have ro branching out to make ‘trial run’ alliances with other species (like elves, goblins, and most importantly, gnomes) to do joint studies of how certain things work on a microscopic and ‘normal’ scale. we could see that her being a princess doesn’t just mean she’s a good fighter and that she’s got connections, but she can also be a diplomat. it’d make her being in the lost cities a lot more important, plus, it’d be a great chance for shannon to flex some worldbuilding. ro could also flesh out connections she’s made in the lost cities (like with sophie’s bodyguards [i’m thinking of flori and sandor in particular] and elvin authorities she’s had to deal w/ like mr. forkle and the council) through sharing or gaining knowledge as a microbiologist. 

using ro as a character-driven plot device, ogres could add ‘willing to cooperate even with creatures we have negative history with for science’ to their reputation among other enlightened species. it’d make ogres more nuanced, and maybe, if shannon decided to go this route, cause problems for elves who claim their interspecies role is being peacekeepers.
