Bagan, Biollante, Trendmasters Gigan and Heisei Godzilla, 2010. I used Chartpak markers on these, along prismacolors...I'm glad that alcohol alternatives are much more accesible now, solvent markers were quite the health hazard.

Kaiju Week in Review (February 4-10, 2024)

Zoe Tunnell's Godzilla: Valentine's Day Special for IDW was everything I wanted it to be and more. While the kaiju are essential to the story, the focus is on the rivalry-turned-romance between an EDF captain and an independent kaiju researcher, which unfolds wonderfully across multiple attacks. Kaiju researchers have decried a military-first approach since 1954, of course, but Piper Simmons goes a step further by questioning whether an explosion in defense spending on shiny super-weapons is just making the problem worse. Essential reading.

Shout Factory! TV added seven vintage Toei tokusatsu titles out of nowhere, all in Japanese with English subtitles. Magic Serpent (retitled Dragon Showdown) is probably the most familiar and of-interest title to kaiju fans, but there's also Planet Prince (the first of two films edited together and dubbed under the title Prince of Space), Invasion of the Neptune Men, Watari: The Ninja Boy, Ninja Scope, and The Golden Bat. Earlier today, we learned that they're all being released in a Blu-ray set as well—but more on that in the next column.

Here's a new CG short called Daikaiju vs. the Giant Girl (we are ignoring the typo in the thumbnail/video title). Great action, and I had to check the credits to confirm it was completely computer-animated.

When Titanic Creations first announced its articulated Gorgo figure, I was less than confident they'd be able to deliver on their promise of a graphic novel sequel to the film. Well, work on it seems to be progressing well, although at some point along the way it became a prequel instead. Artist Patrick McEvoy posted on his Facebook that the comic is fully inked. The company is also rather boldly setting it in the same universe as their original kaiju graphic novel Soul War, also illustrated by McEvoy.

Warning from Space has a surprisingly large role in this Martin Scorsese-directed Squarespace ad. Leave it to the world's foremost Marvel hater to have me watching and enjoying a Super Bowl commercial.

I don't often post X-Plus news, but this Bagan figure based on his appearance in Godziban seemed noteworthy. They're also releasing a figure based specifically on the giant Cybot Godzilla animatronic from The Return of Godzilla, with the Shonen Rick limited edition including a small Shockirus.

So... Godziban, right? That wacky puppets show from youtube? What a ride. 

It started off humble, with only Godzilla, Minilla, Junior and Mothra doing funny stuff. But smaller and surreal segments involving a baby Hedorah, a grandpa Hedorah, and Kamata-kun kind of foreshadowed something bigger and weirder on the horizon.

As time went on they added more characters one would expect, like Anguirus, Rodan, Mechagodzilla and Gigan. 

Before we knew we were seeing obscure ones like the Dorats, Gabara, Gezorah and even sentient Matango! 

And the show just kept and keeps getting bonkers and more bonkers. Almost every incarnation of Godzilla is a member of the Godzilla family, one of them is Santa Claus, King Caesar got a son and a daughter, Gigan is getting parents, Minilla raised a baby Rodan, Biollante fought Desguidorah, the entire cast of Destroy All Monster (including Varan!) is set to actually fight Showa King Ghidorah this time, Heisei/Mecha King Ghidorah is ALSO either fighting or joining forces with Showa King Ghidorah, Erika.

But with the release of a new promo for the blu-ray, we now know this show has done the unthinkable:

THEY BROUGHT BAGAN TO LIFE!!

Bagan! That one kaiju that got scrapped from several Godzilla and Mothra movies, that only appeared in one somewhat obscure video game, that was often interpreted as the most powerful monster evah a la Broly from Dragon Ball leading to several hyped fans hopelessly hoping for his proper debut for decades, to the point of becoming an ironic meme to several other fans...

And they just... did it.

So...

...uh...

Maybe she could be next?

More Bagan stuff at long last: Bagan loves mocking Mothra whenever it has the chance, but there is nothing it relishes more than mocking her faith in the Mother Dark - her belief that the Mother will gather and reunite all souls, that they're all destined to return to the world and eventually back to Her embrace. It's not that Bagan doesn't *believe* the Mother Dark exists - he does. It's just that he finds it amusing how Mothra thinks Light wins in the end. More go to Him than Her, after all.

Been a while since we had some Bagan horror! And this really escalated... plus it's that time of the year when I start listening to spooky audiobooks, like The Exorcist, which gives me an evil thought:

"Your mother's in here with us, Abraxas. Would you like to leave a message? I'll see that she gets it."
