Hamefura x Pokémon AU: Pokémon: Fortune Lover - Gameplay

Some Info dump on what the ‘game’ is like in this AU. I’ll later discuss how Bakarina’s actions change things.

Part 2: Changes Due to Katarina’s Actions

The game’s premise is that the main character is accepted into Sorcier’s Academy of Magic and Pokémon due to possessing rare Light Magic despite their commoner status. ‘Maria Campbell’ is the default protagonist but their name, gender, and appearance can be customized.

All Pokémon games introduce some new gimmick or mechanic. The one for this game is Magic Boosting. Trainers who are mages can use their magic to boost their Pokémon’s power. This works best with Pokémon whose Type is compatible with your element. In the main character’s case, Light Magic works with all Types except Dark, Poison, and Ghost and is most compatible with Fairy.

While there, the player can choose one of four storylines connected to each of the Capture Targets: Geordo, Alan, Keith, and Nicol. Now, while we are aware of their conflicts in the original Fortune Lover game, I want to alter them a bit so that they fit in the world of Pokémon and you need to do complex stuff to resolve them. For example:

Alan’s storyline is that he wants to become the Master Champion to prove he is better than Geordo. He sees you (the player) as a rival for that position and often battles you while you are on your journey to compete in the League.

Nicol’s storyline involves battling against Sophia’s bullies to protect her. I want there to be more to it but can’t think of something.

I’m also not sure what to do about Geordo’s and Keith’s storylines.

Anyway, the romantic elements are still present but they have less prominence. Sure, you can still win the Capture Targets over, but that’s not actually the main thing of this game.

Let’s talk about the female rivals. Besides the three you expect (Katarina Claes, Mary Hunt, and Sophia Ascart) there is a fourth one specific to the Keith storyline: Lady Charlotte Vulcan (© @logo-comics).

While each storyline has their own rival, Katarina Claes stands out in that she antagonizes the Main Character in all the storylines, not just Geordo’s and Keith’s. And though you can befriend the other three, Katarina is unrepentantly a villainess, at least on the first half of the game.

The Condemnation scene happens in all storylines with the Target you are pursuing coming to your defense. Unlike the og FL, there is no bad endings where Katarina dies. She is sentenced to exile but somehow escapes before they can go through with it.

Which brings up to the second part of the game.

No matter which storyline you chose, you always come into conflict against Team Dark, who seek to take control over all Pokémon and use them to conquer the world. I haven't decided who their boss is but, I kind of want it to be the king’s recluse brother since the guy is sus in the LNs.

Now completing the main for storylines unlocks the final storyline where you must find out what Team Dark is up to and stop them to save Sorcier. The first even of the second half that sets you on the path to defeat Team Dark is saving Sirius Dieke/Raphael Walt from the Dark Spirit possessing him.

Once you save Raphael, you learn that Marchioness Dieke was a member of Team Dark, so the Ministry asks for you assistance in stopping them. All five Capture Targets volunteer to help you; you can even ask the remaining three female rivals for help.

During the investigation, you discover that the fugitive Katarina Claes has joined Team Dark to take revenge on the Main Character. Other antagonists include Sora and Sarah.

At the end of the game, after you defeat Team Dark, you can end with either one of the five Capture Targets, all of them for the Harem ending, or Friendship ending.

manga/manhwa reading update

The Stereotypical Life of a Reincarnated Lady - SO, SO, SO DAMN FUNNY! No slapstick humour, no weird forced comedy. While the situations the FL gets into is super funny, the thing I enjoy the most is her internal monologue. Someone give her an award. She is so candid and natural, she has got to be the most logical, stoic, and relatable ‘reincarnated in an isekai’ character. And she’s just so funny I can’t. I love the way she’s so passive about whatever’s happening in her life rn, as if she’s just a ‘side character’ that needs to do her scene and scram. Also love how the ML is supposed to be some big tough guy and he’s trying to keep her happy (read: seduce her) but he’s just falling head over heels for this peculiar woman. I love the complicated situation the characters are in right now, the side characters’ reactions. The misunderstandings, the confusion, give it to me!!!! Also love the fact that the scanlation group leaves one-line commentaries after a ridiculous or intense scene. Makes reading so much more fun!

The Problem of My Love Affair - another funny romcom. Didn’t like the visuals of both leads at first but they grew on me. ML is such a tsundere (MY WEAKNESS) while FL is a no-bullshit, not-weak, badass lady. I love me some strong female protagonists. Also I love drunken mistakes. I am a glutton for punishment.

Survive as the Hero's Wife - Since it’s scanlated till the end of Vol 2 this manhwa offers some closure. There’s no high stakes love game rn. Both leads are more or less secure with each other, so this was a nice, leisurely read.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Desperate Situation! On the Verge of Doom - This is like reading bakarina fanfiction. Sooo satisfying. And the destruction flag avoidance game is more high stakes because man Katarina was a right bitch her whole, how is she gonna fix it now? Also, sadistic Gerald/Geordo? I want.

A False Confession - Two Words. Cabel Willard.

The Evil Lady's Hero - most possibly my fave manhwa rn. A drunken one night stand with consequences is my favourite trope but a drunken one night stand with the guy who’s gonna lead you to your death takes the cake for me. I like how the FL thinks. Love the art style. Also the smut. Def the smut.

For Certain Reasons, the Villainess Noble Lady Will Live Her Post-Engagement Annulment Life Freely - Light and entertaining. Also there’s a new villain in town that’s /not/ the FL soo can’t wait for the her relationship to progress with the ML! Claude is a refreshing ML with no signs of the usual ‘I’m a righteous dumbass’ trait.

Game: Suit no Sukima - fuck buddies with a colleague... a bad idea? DUH. But that doesn’t stop these two from doing so. The latest chapters aren’t scanlated on mangadex yet but the ML is a fuckboy. Waiting for his redemption!

Skip Beat! - oh my god. long awaited confession. The latest let me down idk why. I’m okay with them not going into a relationship at this point of their career but I didn’t particularly like the execution of the whole scene.

Current Hamefura plot bunny nibbling away at my brain: An accident at the Ministry of Magic accidentally teleports the Monkey Girl to the world of Hamefura just moments before her death. During the brief stay she has there as they try to return her home, she meets Bakarina and learns that she was just about to die. Bakarina sends her back with messages to the Monkey girl’s versions of A-chan and her family, allowing her to tell them how much they meant to her.

Jeord overhears this, and is let in on Fortune Lover. When the Monkey Girl returns home, he sets up his own trip to Japan where he...no sense beating around the bush here, he finds where the company that made Fortune Lover is located and goes there to let them know what he thinks about the plot of the game they made (as well as learn what he can for the upcoming Fortune Lover 2 to help Bakarina. His magic does wonders making the staff realize he’s the real deal). The staff, in turn, find out about the altered timeline and find themselves not being able to go through making Fortune Lover 2. Instead, they take Jeord’s story about his Katarina and make their own Hamefura game where Katarina gains her memories back at the academy. In short, the Verge of Doom manga isn’t a what-if story. It’s part of the Jeord route of the game they made instead of Fortune Lover 2.

Monkey Girl finds herself unable to finish Fortune Lover as a result of her experiences, as she worries she may be dooming other versions of herself whenever Katarina meets a bad end (or wondering if without her death, somone else reincarnated and became FL-Katarina). I was thinking of her being overheard talking to A-chan about it by a classmate who is the reincarnation of Jeord from the Sirius bad end (or even Jeord’s bad end, revealing he died shortly after going into exile), but I think that would be too convoluted and the story would be too messy at that point.

Bakarina Cast in Houseki no Kuni roles

I already have an Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous AU done for the cast, buut, for fun. If they were to play the roles of the HnK cast, here’s who I’d think who would be who.

Katarina = Phosphophyllite

Note: Reasoning is due to bubbly, childish personality and tendency to get into trouble. Katarina definitely is different than Phos in quite a few areas, but the bubbly personality, being the main character, and tendency to get into trouble on accident fits very well. Plus Katarina being in the role of only having a hardness of 3 (very fragile) parallel well with her weak magic in Hamefura. Perhaps Katarina’s personality ripples in unexpected ways due to her difference from the original Phos...

Keith = Cinnabar

Note: Main reason for this is purely the parallel between Keith and Cinnabar due to their views on their curse/gift. Cinnabar’s hard to control mercury and Keith’s powerful earth magic. Plus the idea of him and Katarina forming a close bond in this setting would be fun to see.

Anne = Rutile

Note: This is purely because Anne is Katarina’s second mom and of course she’d be someone repairing Katarina everytime she breaks. Just who would be Padparadscha here...

Alan = Diamond (Dia)

Note: Considering the “sibling” like relationship Dia and Bort have, Alan and Geordo fitting into that group as well as being the “diamonds” of the gems is a must. Plus, Dia’s coloration works well with Alan’s original silvery hair. Other fun note is the dynamic, if there’s no nobility rumors getting in the way, I can imagine Alan and Geordo having a similiar dynamic as Dia and Bort.

Geordo = Bort

Note: Speaking of Geordo and Bort... Bort being the strongest gem out of all of them, intertwines nicely with Geordo’s aspect of being “perfect” (Also, black haired Geordo??). This seeming perfection while Dia’s not as “strong” as Bort is. Leading to feeling like they NEED to protect Dia since they are “weaker”. It’s a fun dynamic and one that could go a few different ways (especially in the sense that Bort unintentionally makes Dia feel worthless since they don’t want them to fight).

Nicol = Yellow Diamond

Note: Reason? The last member of the Diamond family and I always see Nicol as being another big brother to Geordo and Alan so it fits as well. Plus Nicol being the oldest of the cast, and one of the oldest living gemstones is another fit. Plus, Nicol’s wind magic, and then Yellow Diamond is the fastest gem out of all of them.

Sophia = Antarcticite

Note: Anyone who knows Houseki no Kuni know exactly what I’m talking about with this character, and before anything else, I’m not sure how Katarina might be able to alter Antarc’s fate. Once can only wonder~ back to reasoning though, Antarc fits well with Sophia’s albino appearance and isolation, tho with Antarc it’s more circumstantial than anything else. Plus the close bond Phos and Antarc share, could be fun to explore with Katarina and Sophia in their shoes.

Mary = Euclase

Note: tbh, I’m not sure who Mary would fit best as, but for now, I think either Euclase, Jade, or perhaps even Alexandrite.

Maria = Zircon

Note: Zircon is the next youngest gem next to Phos and is generall viewed as gifted with lots of potential. Maria fits well here since she’s the original MC of FL before Katarina unintentionally became the MC. These two could have a closer bond than Phos and Zircon did.

Tearmoon Empire, Vol. 1

By Nozomu Mochitsuki and Gilse. Released in Japan as “Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari” by TO Books. Released in North America digitally by J-Novel Club. Translated by David Teng.

It’s been a while since I’ve been so entertained by a light novel debut. The premise of the story already had me half-won over, to be honest. Mia Luna Tearmoon is this world’s Marie Antoinette, a spoiled young princess who only cares about herself and thus, when the revolution comes (a revolution she unwittingly instigated), she is sent to the guillotine. But then… she wakes up ten years earlier, right as rain! Now she has a firm goal: change history! So far so normal, right? It’s a familiar plot to fanfic writers, so familiar it has a name – “Peggy Sue”, after the 1986 movie Peggy Sue Got Married. However, Mia hasn’t really changed all that much. She’s still a selfish princess who thinks only for herself… mostly. The intense desire to not get her head cut off, combined with the miserable three years in prison she spent before that, have led to several alterations in how she interacts with people. In fact… she slowly becomes terrific. Despite what she or the narrator might think.

In addition to the Peggy Sue aspect, there are other ‘genres’ of books I was reminded of. Mia is an “Otome Game Villainess” in all but name, and a lot of the interactions she has with others will make the reader think of Bakarina. I was also reminded of the old J-Novel series Me, a Genius?, in that some of the humor of the book comes from Mia misinterpreting everyone’s actions, and absolutely everyone misinterpreting hers. Her maid, Anne, becomes absolutely loyal and devoted. Her advisor, Ludwig, is convinced she’s brilliant (because she remembers all the issues that made the Empire fall in her past go-round and parrots it back to him). The exception to this is the narrator, who is very much a Lemony Snicket-style narrator, constantly reminding the reader that Mia’s motivations are focused only on herself, and that frequently she does not MEAN to do the immense good she does.

That said, one of the few drawbacks in this book is that sometimes the narration overdoes it a bit, because over the course of the book, we *do* see Mia doing a lot of good, even if her intent may be different. Though her, people’s lives get better, things are happier. What’s more, Mia is gradually getting less selfish. Part of this may be simple premonition – when she tries to ignore some noble girls bullying Tiona, who is the girl who eventually leads the revolution against Mia, she gets a chill down her spine. Is it realizing that ignoring it would be a disaster for her future? Or is it a growing conscience? I suspect the latter. She chooses to go to the rescue, and it’s great. Mia has a sharp tongue, something that does not change in either timeline, but using it for good rather than evil is a definite plus. She also flirts with a young prince, at first in order to gain his country’s help should the revolution still occur, but gradually finds him genuinely attractive and charming, and so reacts like a normal teenage girl. It’s sweet. (There’s also an amazing scene where a bitter young noble swaps out some food at a party for stale crackers she brought as a prank, and when Mia eats them she not only is nostalgically reminded of the food she was given in prison, but is clever enough to realize that the preservatives used in these THREE-YEAR-OLD crackers can help her kingdom’s food issues.)

I tend to ‘quote tweet’ parts of a book as I read them. I didn’t do that with Tearmoon Empire, but that’s simply as the quotable bits were entire paragraphs and scenes that would have been too long to tweet. This book is funny from start to finish, from the snarky narration to the hilarious misinterpretations and even to normal “just write it funny” scenes like the young noble girls trying (badly) to make a lunch for Mia’s beau, which was AMAZING. There’s also a diary extract at the end that reminds you that no one misinterprets Mia’s own actions quite like Mia herself. It’s the sort of book you want to go back and re-read the moment you finish it. (You may have to – the 2nd volume hasn’t started up on J-Novel Club’s schedule yet, though I understand it’s coming soon.) If you avoided this book because of its shoujo-style cover, you need to give it a read. I loved it.
