This book was gifted to me for my birthday. I read it with low expectations because the person who gave it to me said it wasn’t the same as the authour’s prior book titled ‘Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows.’
The more I read it the more I was engrossed with the story and characters. In each of her books Jaswal tackles a mainstream topic in the punjabi culture. In this book she addresses female infanticide and assisted suicide.
The book was a difficult read for me because it took me back to when my grandfather passed away, and how difficult it was to watch him deteriorate. How he wanted to escape the tortured of his last days. He didn’t want to live anymore. His pain was unbearable. I paused many times because my real life memories were too vivid to separate from the lives of the characters.
It is an amazing read and one I highly recommend for someone looking for a thought provoking, pensive read.

First the title grabbed me, then the description pulled me in and I just had to read this book, but of course there was a waitlist😫 I patiently waited though and I am so glad I did. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book😍 I didn’t want to leave these women behind as the story came to an end. I laughed and cried and sat on the edge of my seat as the underlying mystery came to a head. 📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚 Title - Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows Author - Balli Kaur Jaswal Storyline/Overview - Nikki, a daughter of Indian immigrants working in London takes up teaching English literacy to Indian widows and it eventually leads to shocking insights as the story progresses. My opinion - This novel gives us a glimpse of immigrant experience in Southall, London. Nikki is portrayed as a modern feminist woman who is confused about what she wants to do in her life while she also has to adhere to the traditional family values at the same time. When she decides to tutor the widows and finds that they have many fantasies that are untold, she helps express them in a very creative way. The book also has a unsolved case of a death of a young woman in parallel to keep the story moving ahead. Indian culture is known to be traditional, patriarchal and not so open about topics revolving around sexuality. The book portrays Punjabi widows finding the courage to discuss their sexuality and being vulnerable at the same time. Even though this book sounds very casual, it had a lot of thought provoking topics to explore which was what I loved about it. The book brings out so many topics concerning the Indian culture - 1. Not having the freedom to be your ‘true self’ under the pretext of being judged 2. Conflicts between the modern and traditional values 3. Stigma regarding sexuality, arranged marriages and widows in public 4. Moral policing under the pretext of religion The best part of the book was the showcase of a feminist theme with these women coming together and supporting each other in times of need. Conclusion - This was a fun, light and refreshing read with some wonderful social messages underneath.
