for the AU 5+ headcanons ask, is it okay to ask for Barriscowest? any AU, canon divergence version but Barriscowest?

It’s absolutely okay! Here’s one that popped into my head (there’s probably a fic or two out there with this concept, but I haven’t read one, so this is entirely from my own imagination):

Iris dates Cisco instead of Eddie during the coma. When Barry wakes up, he’s envious of them at first, and tries to dislike Cisco, but…he’s such a sweet guy and lovable too. Barry finds himself falling head over heels, but…Cisco’s dating Iris. His best friend. Who he’s also in love with. This is a problem

Cisco, for his part, is also head over heels but feels really awkward about it because he does genuinely love Iris. Still, he invites Barry over for movie nights, trying to convince himself it’s all just platonic

I should mention that due to dating Cisco and being Barry’s best friend, Iris is brought into the loop sooner. Not sure about the details of that, but like…her being out of the loop as long as canon isn’t totally plausible with the addition of her dating Cisco

Iris clocks the feelings growing between them, as does literally everyone else. Caitlin kind of frowns about it—she’s come to like Iris, and Iris doesn’t deserve her boyfriend being in love with someone else. Iris, though…she for some reason can’t find it in herself to be jealous. Especially when she sits in on some of their movie nights…she’s suddenly struck by the realization that right here, with the two of them next to her, all of them cuddled together on the couch…she’s the happiest she’s ever been

She doesn’t say anything though, so all of them are kinda pining and also guilty about it. Iris is more nervous than guilty—what if they think it’s weird? What if they laugh in her face and choose each other over her? Deep down she knows it’s ridiculous—Cisco would never break her heart in such a cruel way, and she and Barry are important to each other no matter what their relationship is—but…she can’t shake the fear anyway

Then the tidal wave happens. No waterfront kiss because we still don’t condone cheating in this house, but Cisco dies, and Barry and Iris are shattered—yeah, in this AU, they find that out. All thoughts of confession die on Iris’s tongue, and both of them are in grief—Iris hugs him tightly and says, “run, Barry, run”

Barry time travels. Cisco gets kidnapped. He saves Cisco. And then…he tells them both what happened, Cisco confesses about his dreams…and somehow, this leads into Iris confessing her feelings to them both. Both of them are shocked and happy and also the three of them all feel a little silly for all the dancing-around they’ve done the past few months. So they all agree to try dating each other and it’s…nice

I’m not totally sure how the rest of the season would proceed 😅 but with Iris so firmly on the Team, and Barriscowest such a well-oiled trio, I can’t imagine it would go any way except smoothly.

Hmmm, so for "a very Married Couple have mutual crush" there are quite a few ways I could go about it

Iris and Eddie meet Barry and are instantly smitten, but aren't ready to say anything to him yet so when he catches them talking about him being hot, they pass it off as talking about the Flash and Barry's just dying inside because he's head over heels for both of them and they think he's sexy in his Flash suit but don't know it's him...

But then there's also Barry & Iris falling over themselves to cheer Cisco up post Cindy break up because they just like him so much but don't know how to spit it out and Cisco is slowly picking up on the clues...

Barry and Iris going to Ralph for a noir themed AU, Ralph's PoV as he slowly falls for the hot couple thinking they don't want him but it turns out all their flirting is indeed sincere and not just him exaggerating things in his head

Cisco and Kamilla run into Lisa and start making up excuses to spend time with her - bewildered aro finds herself in a QPR with a practically married couple and enjoying it

Khione helps Timeless!Wells extend his timelessness to Tess and what starts as gratefulness between demi-god-like-beings turns into something more permanent as Tess and Harrison both come to realize they want Khione with them too. (Khione - I don't understand romance but I certainly understand partnering. Partnering is very, very nice.)

Barry and Iris being there for Caitlin when Frost goes to jail slowly becomes something else as they realize they're both in love with Caitlin too...

I'll have to see if any of these work for other prompts first before committing to one for this prompt.

Barriscowest for the shipping bingo?

There are so many parallels between Barry's friendship development with Cisco in S1, the re-establishment of Barry's friendship with Iris in S2, and then just the way Iris and Cisco both relate with Barry over the course of the rest of the show. Until Cisco leaves, anyway.

It's easy to get caught up in talking about how Barry relates to Cisco and Iris, though, and miss talking about how Cisco and Iris relate to each other.

I think initially Cisco is just Barry's weird friend as far as Iris is concerned. They do work together as part of the attempt to confront Barry about the Flash needing his team, but that's really more Joe's doing than the two of them. For me the two of them being friends is something that really starts later, towards the end of S2. When Barry's trapped in the Speed Force, Iris goes with Cisco into the STAR Labs 'morgue' and then the two of them have to work together, immediately after, to fetch Barry from the Speed Force. And they seem a lot more at ease with each other afterwards. In S3, they're a lot more comfortable working together and we start to get more small moments and gestures of friendship between them. In the break between S3 and S4, the two of them become a pretty good team (plus Wally) in a shake up of Team Flash that forced Cisco out from behind the comms and into the field where he had to depend on Iris to be the one to guide him from STAR Labs.

We don't get a whole lot of Iris and Cisco interactions that aren't about Barry in some way, but the ones we do get show that they care about each other a lot. So while I would enjoy Barriscowest as a V, I do think the triad here has three pretty solid sides.

Due to being simple and going tunnel vision when its abt the OTP, I've never actually thought about Khione joining Killersnow, but I fucking love the idea!

Now, obvi, I am living in a timeline where Khione's existence doesn't precede any death nor need any mechanical malfunction. SO SO SO in my head, Frost survived her time as Hellfrost and the battle with Earth-Prime's Deathstorm. But, but, but, Frost practically became a vacuum for all the energy of every soul Deathstorm got. All that energy melded and molded so much that it depleted Frost's own, making her sick (similar to Caitlin's cold that Carla helped her with) until suddenly, the energy came together and manifested as a completely new alter!

That's my alternative Khione origin story, anyway. And y'all KNOW i <3 killersnow more when they share a bod, so the split never happened in my world, so now there's three girlies in one form!

(also: M*rk Bl*ine does not exist within this world. Maybe he was never born, maybe he died in a horrible accident that was slow and painful and bloody. Either way, he doesn't know them and has no relationship with Frost or friendship with Khione or partnership with Caitlin.)

Caitlin has been down the discovering-an-alter road before, right? And last time, she didn't exactly treat Frost well. Frost didn't treat her well, either. At the start, they were selfish and hateful and scared and desperate. Caitlin doesn't want to repeat her past mistakes, and welcomes Khione as gracefully as she can manage with her shock.

Frost, though? She's jealous. Jealous that Khione gets on Caitlin's good side so early, after Frost had to spend so many years fighting for a right to their own body. Jealous that Khione immediately gets all the trust and niceties and respect that Frost was denied over and over again. So she acts out. Starting fights with Caitlin over little things, freezing Khione out, trying desperately to convince everyone that Khione cannot be trusted due to being the after effect of Deathstorm Prime.

Khione is just kinda trying to figure out existence, tryingg to get used to walking, trying to burn everyone's names to memory. She mostly is too focused on figuring things out to notice that Frost doesn't like her.

what I'm saying is: Snowkhione friends to lovers and Khionefrost one-sided enemies to lovers!

WHEN the Snow System makes up and Frost communicates her feelings in a healthy way, though-

Now, Khione is basically exactly in Frost's old shoes, metaphorically speaking. Maybe literally speaking bc she doesn't know her own style yet. She doesn't know her name, she doesn't know who she is, or what she is, or if she likes cheese fries. Just like how Frost never had a birthday party until she was an adult and only found out her favorite ice cream flavor a few years ago. So they get close really quick, once Frost gets over the unfairness of it all. Frost becomes a life coach to Khione, like Ralph passed the torch to her, and she inspires and encourages Khione to take risks and have her own adventures and do whatever the fuck she wants, to decide what she likes. So Khione takes Frost's old name.

And now it's Caitlin who's jealous. And Caitlin tries to repress that, per usual, but it comes out in bursts like water charging through cracks in a dam. So Caitlin and Khione find something that interests them both: botany. Khione has a deep, special interest in anything to do with life itself, especially the elements, and Caitlin knows a lot about the human body due to being a doctor and having a fascination with plants in high school c; i mean, she knew everything about mistletoe on the fucking spot, so it's really not even a meta joke that Caitlin may really like plants

So the Snow System makes up again, and the two keep deepening their friendships with Khione, and sometimes when Khione is just barely co-con with the both of them she can feel how much love Frost and Caitlin have for each other, how much Frost adores making Caitlin laugh, how much Caitlin likes the shine in their eyes that Frost gives them... how differently colored their relationship is compared to how they are with Khione.

And now Khione's jealous.

And that has never happened before.

So she very bluntly asks the two people she knows the best about jealousy and how to cope with crushes and what romance even is and how do you go about getting a girlfriend and what if you think you like your best friends and she very blatantly tells them that she is trying to cope with wanting to be with them.

She doesn't say it like she expects the feelings to be returned, or that she's flirting, or anything. She just innocently admits her feelings and asks their advice on it. And that is the cutest, most respectful, most genuine thing they have ever fucking seen. And now Killersnow realize that some of the jealousy they felt was because they were worried that Khione would steal their girlfriend. And now they realize that nobody has to steal anybody. Thus... the ot3 is born.

Khione and the bad bitches she pulled by being autistic.

u cannot tell me these two men have not had gay sex. they are fast friends and uKNOW barry hasn't had many friends in his life. his best friend is a girl he's in love with and they've always been insanely physically affectionate very casually. i don't think barry... really knows that society imposes this, like, boundary when it comes to immense physical affecgion? yknow what i'm talking about? like some people think its gay to kiss the homies on the cheek or hold your guy friend's hand or wipe food off his lips. and barry's only close friend was a girl he loved that loved him. there's appearantly a boundary between the physical affection u can give a friend and the affection u can give a lover and barry never got the memo.

so barry's out here, constantly touching cisco and holding him and going in for fakeout jokey kisses as he's always done with iris. and cisco believes that b has been purposefully flirting with him for MONTHS. so the next time barry goes in for a joke kiss that he plans on pulling away from, cisco does not pull back. cisco thinks it's real. and he kisses barry allen right there and then.

and then he sees the surprise on barry's face and the realization crashes down on him and suddenly he has to get out of here but barry is the fucking flash and his thoughts run faster than cisco's and barry realizes that hey, he always wanted the fake kisses with iris to be real, and hey, he doesn't feel any different with cisco. he wants it to be real, too.

so barry grabs cisco w super speed and suddenly cisco realizes that he is making out with the flash. and there's still tears of humiliation on cisco's face but barry wipes them off. and then they're at cisco's apartment and then barry is vibrating and holy shit linda did not undersell how good that feels, and boom, gay sex time

I haven’t read much with Barriscowest, but I’ve enjoyed what I have read. Most of the ones I’ve read were Cisco/Barry + Barry/Iris with Cisco and Iris being metamours, but I’m also very much not opposed to it being Cisco/Barry/Iris.

They are very much a Shenanigans Trio and I feel like Caitlin and Joe are both eternally exhausted by their bullshit. It also DEFINITELY took Barry and/or Cisco an embarrassing number of tries to ask each other out and they were absolutely going on ‘dates’ for a full 2 years, minimum, without knowing it before Iris took mercy on them.

I actually might have an old Iris/Barry/Cisco fic in my drafts… Hmm. I shall have to go digging.

role reversal AU with Barry and Iris? :)

So I've written a couple of these before - and I no doubt will again. [I Know (Do You?) and Hurry Up (To Slow Down)] I do enjoy a good role reversal for these two. :D

So in a role reversal specifically from Iris' point of view, I think she'd initially promise not to tell Barry when Joe asks, but quickly realize from Barry's interest in metahumans and the Flash that keeping him in the dark is pretty cruel. Instead of trying to gaslight him about it or talk him out of investigating, Iris would come clean. Forewarned is forearmed and Iris wants him to be safe about things.

Depending on how long it takes for Iris to tell him, Barry may or may not be upset about it. But if he's upset? He gets over it pretty fast. Iris has always been amazing and his hero and so he's so proud of her for being everyone's hero now.

Eobard is not thrilled. In retrospect he realizes that it isn't that surprising that Iris West had the right genes to become a speedster considering Wally West is destined to become a speedster. Or was destined. What does Eobard know. Maybe Linda Park will become a speedster. *he's waving hands wildly while Gideon wonders if she can get smoke to come out of his ears if she says yes*

since Iris was still in college getting her Masters degree at the time, there would be focus on her trying to maintain her GPA while juggling Flash duties and frustration with EoWells perhaps not respecting her class time, maybe her pointing out that she's not exactly getting paid for her Flash work inspires him to create an internship for her so that she does get paid and can't complain about that anymore.

Because, honestly, Iris doesn't have the Jitters job anymore. it's not her fault she couldn't work while in a coma but what are the odds a part time barista job would get held open for her that long?

There's so many ways things could play out relationship wise. I've done both the Westallen and Westhallen routes, but why not some Barriscowest? Or Snowestallen? Snowest & barrisco? Thallen and Newsvibe (is that what Iris/Cisco is called? that's what I'm going with) There are a lot of possibilities and I do enjoy so many different ships.

Iris and the pipeline... I don't know where she'd stand on that. I'd like to think she'd be against it and so that's the track I'd take writing another one of these AUs, because Iris is the voice of reason. But canon probably would have put her on the pro pipeline train if she hadn't been sidelined like she was. :/

I think Iris would probably try harder to talk things out with the metas. Not always a good idea, but she's much more likely to try to de-escalate a situation than Barry is. So she'd probably be able to talk Shawna down, but trying to empathize with Hartley would likely end with him taking advantage of her sympathy. Though she'd also be less sympathetic towards Snart since, unlike Barry, she doesn't really have the experiences Barry has that made him empathize with Len.

Iris would be tempted to go back in time to save Nora because she loves Barry and she wants him to have his mother. Whether or not she actually does it depends on how her conversation with Henry goes. He was not in favor of changing the timeline to save Nora even though he no doubt wanted her to have a chance to live, so he might be able to talk Iris out of it if he can articulate his feelings on the subject well enough.

a lot of this has focused on Iris, but I think Barry would settle well into back up. He'd probably still get a chance to be a battle couple with her similar to the incident with Tony in canon. Maybe the return of Becky Cooper turns out to be a bad thing when she turns out to be a powered stalker with a crush on Barry?

Barry's also got a pretty close friendship with Cisco and Caitlin already by the time Iris wakes up, which I think would factor into Iris ultimately deciding to tell him pretty quickly. Keeping the secret would not only be potentially putting Barry in danger but damaging his new friendships and Iris wouldn't want to do that to him.
