New Funding to Support Over 25,000 People in England with Health Issues Find and Stay in Work
Tumblr media
London, 11 June 2023 - The UK government has announced a significant expansion of a program aimed at providing employment support to individuals with mild to moderate mental or physical health conditions who are out of work or require assistance to remain employed. The funding will benefit over 25,000 people across 12 areas in England, spanning 41 local authorities. This initiative marks an important step towards delivering Universal Support, a key component of the government's strategy to reduce economic inactivity and stimulate economic growth. Recognizing employment as a crucial factor in health and wellbeing, participants are referred to the service by healthcare professionals such as GPs and practice nurses, integrating employment support and advice with their normal health treatment.   Andrew Beardsall, Associate Director of Primary Care at NHS Bassetlaw Place, Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board, said: "The expansion of IPSPC is great for patients and for primary care professionals." "GPs often report that in trying to deal with patients' physical and mental health issues, they are often only treating a small part of their patients' overall problems, which cannot be tackled in isolation. IPSPC offers the chance to break the spiral between ill health, employment, and quality of life. It is simply a good idea and warmly welcomed."   Under the Individual Placement and Support in Primary Care (IPSPC) program, participants receive on-the-job "place and train" employment support and advice. This approach allows participants to start working immediately, learning as they go, rather than having to undergo extensive training before being allowed to start employment. The first phase of the IPSPC program, launched in April 2023, successfully provided on-the-job support to 12,700 people across several regions, including South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, West London, Norfolk, Cheshire West and Chester, and West Midlands. This initial phase received £27.9 million in funding. Building on this achievement, the program is now expanding to support an additional 12,900 people in Enfield, Essex, Newham, Nottingham, Slough, and Surrey. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have jointly invested £31 million to facilitate this expansion. These efforts are part of the first phase of the DWP's Universal Support employment program, which was announced during the Spring Budget. The expansion of the IPSPC program follows evaluation research on the IPS program in South Yorkshire and the West Midlands, which revealed positive outcomes, including enhanced employment prospects, well-being, self-confidence, and motivation to return to work.

Flickr.   Tom Pursglove MP, the Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, said: "It's great to see this approach boost participants' employment prospects, well-being, self-confidence, and motivation to return to work." "What we learn from supporting people through IPSPC will pave the way to Universal Support, which, when fully rolled out, will offer people personalized support to help them flourish in work."   Health Minister Maria Caulfield emphasizes the expanded funding as a crucial component of the government's commitment to support disabled individuals and those with health conditions to live independently. She also highlights the government's intention to seek input on better diagnosing and supporting individuals with major health conditions, ultimately informing the Major Conditions Strategy to be unveiled later this year. The program is estimated to assist over 25,000 individuals in securing or retaining employment by March 2025. By providing personalized employment support and advice integrated with their normal health treatment, this initiative aims to empower individuals and enable them to flourish in the workplace.   Sources: THX News & Department for Work and Pensions. Tumblr media
Congratulations to our client Richdon Joinery and Construction for winning Best Local Builder or Traditional Craftsperson at the LABC Awards 2019! Their restoration and conversion of the former King Edward School in Retford has been of an outstanding quality and it has been a pleasure to work with them.
The development as a whole, which encompasses the entire school compound, is now home to a tight-knit community that are able to enjoy the site’s heritage and in doing so, preserve it. The qualities of the existing building have been maintained through a careful restoration approach, resulting in a high-quality conversion with exemplar craftsmanship employed throughout.

Re-informed: The Making of the Wetu
youtube
This film in the Re-informed digital series enables viewers to discover what life was like before the Mayflower passengers arrived in America and how the Native American people lived their lives before they were changed forever by colonisation. It explores the culture of the Wampanoag people, whose land the Mayflower passengers settled on, and looks at their day-to-day lives including how they built a typical Wampanoag home - known as a Wetu.
The Making of the Wetu' film speaks to Darius Coombs, one of the designers of a specially-commissioned Wetu that is hoped to travel to the UK later this year and go on display on the grounds of Bassetlaw Museum in Nottinghamshire - close to the homes of Mayflower passengers such as the Bradford and Brewster families.
