Do you think DC is trying to give Killer Croc more space? because we had him in the main suicide squad comic, he appeard in gotham city monsters, had a major role in Batman: Reptilian and is getting a graphic novel focused on him (my buddy killer croc)
To be frank? No. Killer Croc has been a prominent member of the Suicide Squad for a while, it’s not a mystery why writers would continue using him. Gotham City Monsters is about just that, monsters in Gotham City, so naturally Waylon would be featured. Croc’s role in Batman: Reptilian is something I doubt DC directly wanted or asked for, simply something the writer desired to do.
My Buddy Killer Croc is the only thing to really showcase that DC itself wants to utilize Waylon has a character (rather than a bat rouge).
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he was featured in these, but I don’t think it’s from a genuine desire from DC.

@jellyfitzjelly The foreshadowing of this in issue 2....
Tumblr media
Bruce: Fascinating. All of my villains are being eaten by something that loses interest as soon as it gets a taste. You know what else does that? Great white sharks. Can you imagine how it EMBARRASSING it would be for a shark to start eating you and then stop because it didn't like your taste? For your femoral to bleed out into the brine a hundred yards from shore, knowing you weren't what was desired? At least if it ate you it would mean it was into you.
Alfred: Sorry. I didn't catch that because I was choosing to ignore everything you said. Do you want an omelet or not?

alright, braindump time. I just finished reading Batman: Reptilian and I have thoughts. It's an interesting story, and beautifully illustrated, but I was expecting it to go in a completely different direction. Reader beware, spoilers ahead.
So the basic plot:
Something is killing criminals in Gotham, all of whom attended a meeting the month prior. It turns out that Killer Croc has been undergoing a mutation and was pregnant at the time of the meeting. He's since given birth and his monster baby has been attacking the criminals because they smell like Croc (via proximity at the meeting). It ends with the monster baby defeated and Croc getting carried off to get his mutant alien reptile DNA studied by the government.
But the first couple issues really stress the difference in power level between Batman and the criminals he fights. He's got the training, he breaks a boxer's spine in the first issue. He's got the tech, he turns the Batmobile's weapons systems on criminals trying to hitch a ride. And he's got the psychological warfare. Batman talks to a lot of plain old non-super criminals in the hunt for Croc, and for them, Batman is a force of nature. He's an omnipresent executioner in the shadows. He won't kill you, he's worse, he "won't let you die". On the other hand, the criminals Batman is against are "untrained, underfed, or mentally ill".
Now, I interpreted the emphasis on Batman's power to establish him, in-universe, as brutal. Brutal enough for it to be an ongoing argument with Alfred, brutal enough for the Joker to mistake Croc's killings as Batman's work. But I think that motif, Batman's power against the downtrodden, has so much more potential when you factor in who Killer Croc is.
Killer Croc is a favorite supervillain of mine, but not for the mutant biohazard reptile-man stuff. I like Killer Croc when he's just a guy, "a linebacker with a skin condition". Batman's other villains all have something to their name; money, a doctorate, a happy life left behind, something. Croc has none of that. Croc was abused by his family, exploited by the circus, forced into crime. He's never had anything. And his appearance and history keep him from having anything; I'm never going to forgot those Gotham City Monsters panels of Croc trying to go legit and getting turned away from every job he applies for.
Killer Croc is the archetype of "untrained, underfed, or mentally ill".
There's a really interesting story there! One where Killer Croc is the hero of the bastards Batman deals with, one where Batman is more monstrous than Croc. But it's not the story that exists in Batman: Reptilian. because that story is based completely off of my own interpretation of Killer Croc as a character. And I'm kind of stuck here, sitting at the intersection of the story the artists made and the story that would follow my personal tastes.

Batman Reptilian
Tumblr media
So, I read Batman Reptilian and it was really fun! Garth writes the Batman I enjoy which is a big asshole who beats up people for the kicks.
Yeah it is controversial with most Batman fans, but I love that version of the character. It's so much fun to see a guy dressed as a Bat be overly cruel to people dress in weird costumes, and it's an enjoyment I don't get from other characters.
This moment with Penguin for example, it's incredibly funny and could have only worked with Batman.
Tumblr media
It's hilarious, it's the same enjoyment I have from seeing those screenshots from All Star Batman & Robin of Bruce just being insane, I'm just completely fascinated by asshole Batman.
But that's not it, Garth is very good at making characters seem pathetic and if there is something he does is make every villain pathetic. Not only with Penguin in that scene, but also with the most loser Joker possible, and how Killer Crock, the main antagonist of the book, is constantly mocked by Batman.
It's a book by someone that doesn't respect this world and these characters, but damn, it's all so fun to read.
And accompanying all this, there is the incredible art of Liam Sharp, that after his time doing the art for Green Lantern he evolved from one of the best artists working today to one of the best in history.
Tumblr media
There is an incredible use of colors, shapes, backgrounds, that accompany this take on the Batman world so well.
If you don't mind not having any relatable characters, I really recommend reading it. It's all dark humor like any of Garth's work, but I think it's one of the ones with better taste, you won't ask what is wrong with him like when reading The Boys or the f*cking Crossed.
