Poison Ivy #19-21

Checking in with the Poison Ivy comic series again, we’ve reached a set of trio issues #19-21 forming “Origin of Species”. This writer G. Willow Wilson’s efforts in marrying together the contributions by many creatives over decades who have taken on the matter of Poison Ivy’s origins. Which if that sounds ambitious, you’d be right.

In media Ivy’s origins have often been recounted either by others or herself. However, because of the developments that led here in previous issues, this secret origin is too for all ones knows a last testament. With that frame dare readers hope for a more sapient, innermost version?

To begin issue #19 sees Pamela Isley off to a Seattle university as an undergraduate in a plant biochemistry program fatefully headed by Dr. Jason Woodrue. Wanting to best her peers (leading botanists Alec and Linda Holland plus Philip Sylvain), entranced both by the work and Woodrue, falling for a sexual relationship with him among other manipulations. When the next round of funding for the experiments runs out, Pam makes her first foray into crime.

Next for issue #20, as things with Pam and Woodrue continue to escalate, Wilson once more does not forget a relatively recent character in the schemes of things… Bella Garten.

Her last appearance to this in a flashback in #2, it’s been several issues. So, let’s take a minute to discuss Bella.

As a fellow student and love interest, specializing in botany and genetics going on to earn a doctorate, Bella Garten or the The Gardener as she would become first appeared in Batman #107 in 2021 creation of writer James Tynion IV. Plus, part of the thread of story involving Poison Ivy during the Fear State event and into the past. The one-shot Batman Secret Files: The Gardener (written by Tynion and art by Christian Ward) was also included in the first collected edition of Poison Ivy. However, the file, another secret origin comic is less about Bella Garten and more an attempt to appeal to Batman to help Ivy (around the Tom King Everyone Loves Ivy period) running through decades of Ivy’s character (with adjustments). Part of the history there exposed, particularly certain actions of Gardener, is uncomfortably weird.

Yet again an example of major violation done to Ivy by someone she trusted. The revelation resulting in a short confrontation between the two in Fear State Omega. (The issue also marking the end of Tynion’s Batman run with Art: Riccardo Federici, Christian Duce, Ryan Benjamin, Guillem March & Trevor Hairsine, Colorist: Chris Sotomayor and Letterer: Clayton Cowles). Where Ivy is having none of the presented defense.

In sum a character that functions more as a plot point, another retcon while trying to put it all (back) together. Yet, coherency that has been needed. Despite the American superhero genre (in)famously being one where seemingly everything and nothing is canon, something still important. So too, the first ongoing series for Poison Ivy not just ought to but, does endeavor to plumb over 50 years of a character’s existence. While bringing what each creative uniquely can. It’s worth asking then if Bella is made more too under Willow’s writing.

Wrapping up casting Ivy’s mind back, issue #21 arrives at the full Poison Ivy. Once again, becoming a human experiment (volunteering!) and transformation. An old life lost, the new leading to Gotham— yet for a unique green reason.

As a woman with growing abilities, confidence in using them, the law is just an obstacle to justice. But of course, conflict and differences plus mistrust with Batman result with Ivy in and out of the terrible Arkham Asylum. This would be the early pre-Harley days too, even though the Ivy costume calls back to the influential BTAS.

Then what can I say about the art I’ve haven’t already in other reviews. Jessica Fong continues to deliver pretty and pretty gross (body) horror main covers. (On the latter it took a while to prepare myself to read the previous issue #18. Though it’s not shocking that bodily autonomy, something Ivy’s origins raise too, makes the list of also current matters the series depicts.)

Marcio Takara definitely has set a bar as the main artist for the series. I wish he was drawing every issue. Though nothing against the other artists who have so far done so. It’s just that I generally wish for a creative team to be able to remain consistent through a run. I’ve praised colorist Arif Prianto consistently too. On the other hand, since these installments are Ivy believing she’s dying and mired in her distant past, I’m surprised there isn’t more of a difference exhibited of that. Why not really experiment with the paneling, designs, and color palette. Just as key the letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou can switch things up to good effect. Actually, if part of the team working on Poison Ivy had to change briefly maybe here was where to do that instead.

In the end these issues of the comic series offer an origin stressing the choices and chances. A Poison Ivy that refutes being pathologized, focuses less on victimization, and more of her own creation and missteps along the way. It’s interesting too, if not still poignant, to look back to the first few issues of Poison Ivy. In soon coming up on two years, the series has issue by issue after issue grown and been recognized as an Outstanding Comic Book by GLAAD. After reflecting on a new(ish) past it continues forward.

So i am trying to follow the new ivy comic but im confused what comics should i read before it?

ok i had a hard time deciding exactly how many titles i should recommend and how much context you would actually need for the miniseries to make sense and i’ll be honest with you: it might be healthier to just dive into the story blissfully unaware of the series of unfortunate events that precede it

The first time it happens, it’s all Scarecrow’s fault.

Bruce had come home from patrol reeking of fear after he had been dosed with fear toxin. Bruce had been erratic and angry, his eyes had wildly darted around as he searched the room for whoever was terrifying him so.

When he had set eyes on Edward, standing there in his night gown with a nervous expression spread across his face, he had relaxed a little. “Mama?” He asked, and before Edward could process that he reached forward and buried his face in Edward’s chest.

The only thing that Edward could really do was run his fingers through Bruce’s hair and murmur, “It’s okay, Bruce, Mama loves you. Mama is here.” as Bruce led him back to bed. The alpha had kept Edward bound to the bed with his body that whole night, gently suckling on the omega’s breasts to coax milk from them while Edward cooed at him and told him how much he loved him.

Edward had no idea what was going through Bruce’s head, other than the fact that it must have something to do with his parents murder. He’s not really sure if he’s doing the right thing, but Bruce seems comforted by laying at Edward’s breast and drinking up his milk like a particularly needy pup.

The thing is, Bruce is rarely ever vulnerable like this. He’s usually the picture of a perfectly dependable, strong alpha. He’s tough as nails and spends his nights patrolling Gotham to keep the city safe. He’s always there for Edward to lean on when he needs him and he’s always so reserved that it’s easy for Edward to forget that he gets vulnerable too. That sometimes he needs someone too.

And Bruce is always taking care of Edward. He’s always there to make him feel safe and secure. Bruce is so very good to him, better than he has to be. After the toxin finally wears off and Bruce is back to his normal self again, Edward promises himself that he’s going to be there for Bruce whenever he needs him like this again. He’s going to be a good mate, someone that Bruce can depend on just like he depends on Bruce so often.

They don’t really talk about what happened. Neither of them really knows how to broach the subject, so they just leave it as one of those things that gets implied but never spoken about. But it does happen again. Only this time, neither of them have the excuse of Bruce being dosed by fear toxin.

Edward lay in bed, sleeping fitfully. He had his nightie rucked up over his legs and his thighs spread wide to compensate for the lack of another warm body laying beside him. He was having such trouble sleeping that night that all it took was the gentle sound of a door opening for his eyes to shoot open.

He slowly leaned forward, moving into a sitting position as he looked towards the source of the noise. His alpha stood nervously, which was an expression that he Edward did not often see on him. “Mama?” He asked tentatively.

Edward’s expression immediately gentled, tender with affection for his alpha in such a vulnerable state. “Yes, baby, mama’s here.” He says sweetly and holds his arms out. “Come here, baby.” He beckons and that’s all the permission that Bruce needs to move onto the bed and crawl into Edward’s arms.

Bruce’s hands slide over his shoulders and move to pull down the spaghetti thin straps of his night gown. Edward gasps as his tits fall out of the flimsy confines of the gown and, his body sensing that it was in need of it, a bit of milk dribbles out of his nipples.

He had always had over-productive milking glands and for the longest time it had been the bane of his existence. It was embarrassing, the way his tits would start leaking at the slightest provocation. Even as he had grown, he had never gotten a good handle on controlling it. He had hated it, felt like it was something wrong with him.

Bruce disagreed. He remembered how Bruce had pulled his top down and kneaded his tits until they were dribbling with milk. “Do you know why your body does this?” He had asked, as he licked it up. Edward had shaken his head, he had no idea. “It’s because your so giving. You’re so giving and good that your body naturally provides for the pups and alphas around you. You’re such a good little omega, Edward.”

Move past it, at least the day.” He would never truly get over his parents death, it would always be something that haunted him. He thought he could at least not acknowledge the anniversary though, he didn’t even want to. He’d rather cast the whole day from his memory, all it did was make him feel miserable.

Edward smiled at Bruce sadly, “Bruce, you know that’s not how trauma works.” He gently chided as he stroked the alphas cheek. “How many times have you told me that? More than once, I’d wager.”

“I know.” Bruce murmured. “I was being stupid. I thought I could just compartmentalize it, I don’t know, put everything into my patrol but once the night ended…”

“You needed me.” Edward replied understandingly. They didn’t usually talk about this sort of thing, it usually went unsaid. The two of them gently washed each other, alpha and omega pampering each other with kisses and soft touches the whole time.

It was nice to be needed, Edward thought as they dried each other off. It was nice knowing that Bruce needed him just as he needed Bruce.

Okay but before I "holy fuck football" freak out time for me to talk about the mess I just finished reading.

I remember reading some negative reviews on Fear State? Or something like that. I actually had a lot of fun reading it, I really liked it even if I wasn't really following other issues (I rarely read comics and I tend to binge read them like all at once so yeah) it was very cool I think! I dunno how to explain it sorry I'm no professional critic nor I read many action comics so it's like.. "woah this is funky I liked it!"........

I think the art was half of what sold me heuheuwheu the artists did an amazing job and that Scarecrow design??? Easily a favorite.

Okay now the bits you can ignore because I don't think I'm qualified to talk about it but: I actually really liked the character and motivation exploration here. Idk they felt very human and easy to feel connected to so it was cool! I also found Scarecrow's plan (I have some stuff to say about this btw) to be very interesting (although absolutely insane) and he was soooooo cool during the whole story. I was stupid happy every time he appeared and spoke.

The ending was... okay? I found it pretty cute, I find it really funny when people power of friendship and love-d Scarecrow, it's kinda funny.

My personal view on the ethics is... bitch this is Batman and Gotham City, for fuck's sake. Batman is the little rich bitch and I think some villains have higher moral ground than him but that's just me! Still, I think you get what I mea, what can I say? It's just Gotham Fucking City on war (again) so of course everything and everyone is fucked up (I did wish rich people didn't exist tho).

Okay now about Scarecrow......... Listen. I liked what they did here. But what Batman said in Omega 1 is true, Crane just doesn't change. He just tries the same things but on bigger scales, his motifs and methods are repetitive... I wished that would change, I really liked what they did in Fear of Faith and I'm a strong believer that they can make Scarecrow a more interesting character using similar ideas from that story. Sorry, there's just... so little with him that they present in the story... it's almost shallow... he JUST sounds like some scientist but he's so much more than that you get what I mean? Whaaa.

Anyways! I found Fear State fun! If you like Scarecrow you'll probably enjoy it! The ending is a 50/50, I kinda like it but I also expected more? Idunno.

Also it'd be very fun for them to just infodrop an explaination on why Scarecrow's theory is outdated bullshit. Because otherwise you just go "but didn't he have a point?" and I don't think that's good.
