Newfoundland Village Is Flooded by Tidal Wave — Cattle Drowned

ST JOHN'S, Nfld. Feb. 10— The telegraph operator at Sandy Point yesterday had all the thrills of a wireless man who stays at his set on a waterlogged vessel. He tapped his key and told St John's that high tides had broken through one of the breakwaters protecting the little village on a virtual island in Bay St. George, that water had reached his door three feet above the ground.
Many of the village people took refuge in the upper stories of their dwellings as the encroaching sea found a way into downstairs living quarters. Others of the 450 who live there splashed to the mainland over the six-mile sandpit, which is the settlement's only connection with the coast. Cattle were drowned.
It was thought danger of complete inundation would be averted as the tide fell and the wind went down, but the people were waiting apprehensively for today's full moon, when the water rises to the highest. By that time, however, it is possible the unnatural flood, backed up into the narrow head-waters of Bay St. George by a southwest gale will have dispersed In a more normal distribution.

For those of you following along with my trip, here are yesterday and today's travels. We begin with the ruins of the Cape St George Lighthouse on the southern headland of Jervis Bay.
This lighthouse predates the one on Point Perpendicular, but it was badly positioned and not well visible, so the new site on the northern headland was chosen.
Even after it was decommissioned and the new lighthouse activated, the Cape St George Lighthouse proved a confusing landmark, so the tower was destroyed.

This year's been so wet there is still water running over the cliffs.
For those interested in the botany . . . here are some of the plants that inspired the Big Bad Banksia Men in May Gibbs' Snugglepot and Cuddlepie stories.
A short drive away, near Murray's Beach is a place called Hole in the Wall.
It would look more spectacular with the sun shining on the sandstone, but unfortunately the clouds were not playing nice.
Hole in the Wall Beach is tiny - the view (roughly) west . . .
Another short drive northward around the bay brings us to Hyams Beach which is said to have the whitest sand in Australia (but I think this is just a tourism gimmick!). It is very white, squeaky sand.

The next beach up (Little Hyams Beach) allowed me a slightly better idea of the water colour

We have a little pied cormorant drying its wings on the rocks on the north end of Little Hyams Beach.
And in the trees we have Little Wattlebirds
and Crimson Rosellas
Then today we have the lovely colours of Shark Net Bay on a sunny winter Sunday

Yes, We Have No Bananas….
Monday 30th May 2022
Today we got the bus in the other direction for a change and made the short journey into the Royal Town of St George, otherwise known as St George’s.
St George’s was the first town on the island founded in 1612 and was the original capital of Bermuda until the island population had grown to the point where the newer and more central city of Hamilton became the capital in 1815.
Sadly, as cruise ships have grown larger over the years, and with the advent of covid-19, St George’s has seen tourist numbers fall dramatically and only a handful even bother to get the fast ferry from Dockyard to come here - as was the case today. We had a gentle stroll through the town, doing a bit of light shopping and then stopping for a drink at the famous White Horse Pub on King’s Square.
Mind you, it may seem odd but everywhere we’ve been over the last few days, there have been no bananas and no banana-flavoured things. It was bad enough they ran out of Pina Colada mix in the hotel bar but there were no banana daquiris or banana ice-creams either; also, there were no banana-split sundaes in the park on Friday; no bananas in the fruit selection at breakfast - need I go on? Bermuda must be the only tropical island with no bananas! However, wonder of wonders, the White Horse had some banana daquiri mix today, so maybe I broke the spell and as a result, Andrew and I ended up co-ordinating our drinks with our outfits - his was an Apple Martini of course!
We returned to Grotto Bay in time for lunch and in the afternoon, we ventured across the road to Blue Hole Park and the Walsingham Nature Reserve.
The Reserve is a habitat for birds and native mangroves, as well as being directly above the island’s famous Crystal and Leamington Caves, a series of underground limestone caves. The Blue Hole for which the park is named is a collapsed example in which people who find it often swim.
It was a very hot day today (by English standards at least) and Andrew led our group (or my case, dragged!) up the hill to the Ice Cream Parlour - where, surprise, surprise, they didn’t have any banana ice-cream! Still, they did have about 15 other flavours to choose from and the Mint Choc Chip was just what the doctor ordered.

Shon Gableton [SNN]: "Live at Westsimster Abbey, Hallie Howell is awaiting the arrival of the Royal family."
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: "Hallie, how is it?"
Hallie Howell [SNN]: Hi, Shon and Cameron! It's glorious here! There is such a feeling of newness in the air. It's palpable.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: "We can feel it!"
Shon Gableton [SNN]: "The balusters were just lowered at the palace, and the Queen's procession is in view. Let's head back there."

Cameron Dorly [SNN]: Royal Guards lead the King's State Coach, carrying Queen Katherine I and Rainier, Prince consort. The coach is being pulled by 4 white Stallions.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: The King's State Coach was first used at the coronation of King Albert I in 1784 and has since been used to transport every monarch to their coronation. The coach has taken the longer route from Buckingsim Palace, down The Mall, since the coronation of King Edward I in 1888.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: Rounding The Lara-Leigh Memorial, the Queen and Prince consort wave to the adoring crowd.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: This is our first glimpse of Her Majesty wearing the State Diamond Diadem, made in 1820 for King Albert I. Since King Albert I, the Diadem has only been worn by Windenburg queens, whether they reigned or were consorts. It was first worn by Queen Isabella, consort to Albert I, in 1830 after the Kings death.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: Just behind The Queen's coach, in The Rolls Royce State Limousine, is The Queen Mother, The Prince of Brindleton Bay, and The Princess Grace. The little prince was expected to be amongst Royal Pages but insiders say The Queen preferred Maids of Honor.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: 136 years later, history is made as Queen Katherine I travels down The Mall preparing to be crowned this nations first Queen!
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: Let's head to Westsimster Abbey as the royal family arrives. Hallie?
Hallie Howell [SNN]: Yes, Cameron. The Royal Family has just arrived! The crowd erupted in a loud roar upon seeing four black Rolls Royce's, bearing the royal flag, approaching carrying senior members of the royal family.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: Guards stood at attention while the Queen and Prince consort's procession passed.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: The tomb of the unknown soldier sits underneath Memorial Arch, and is the central location for Remembrance Day observations to honor armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.
Hallie Howell [SNN]: Back at the Abbey, the Duke and Duchess of Kent are the first to arrive, showing their roles as the most senior members of the royal family. Their Royal Highnesses also arrive in formal robes. The Duke wearing his Order of the Garter robe while the Duchess wears the Royal Edwardian Order mantle, reflecting her status as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Edwardian Order.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: "King George I named her a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Edwardian Order, the highest possible rank, in 2007."
Hallie Howell [SNN]: He did, indeed!
Hallie Howell [SNN]: The Earl and Countess of St Peters followed. Prince Louis, heir to the dukedom of Kent, donned not only his Queen Katherine I Coronation medal but his Royal Edwardian Order, which were bestowed upon His Royal Highness last month. The Countess, wearing a green @sentate dress, wore the Royal Family Order of George I.
Hallie Howell [SNN]: Third to arrive is the younger sister of Queen Katherine, Princess Lara, Countess of Boykins and her husband Anthony, Earl of Boykins. The Princess is wearing a traditional coronation gown and tiara, along with the Windsor sash and the Royal Family Order of George I.
Hallie Howell [SNN]: The Duke and Duchess of Hastings arrive also in formal robes; equal to that of The Duke and Duchess of Kent. The Duke was invested as a Knight of the Garter in 2020 while the Duchess was invested as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Edwardian Order in 2022.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: "You can see the slight difference in their robes."
Hallie Howell [SNN]: Yes, the robes of the Edwardian Order features a red stripe along the border. In a statement just released from the palace:
"At the request of the Queen and Prince consort, Dukes and Duchesses both are wearing formal robes and mantels for the [historic] occasion."
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: So, now we know attires have been well coordinated for the senior royals. Just like the royal guardsmen in the Queen's gorgeous procession, having just passed Memorial Arch.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: Yes! Her Majesty's procession is making its way down Parliament Square Street.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: Crowds cheer as Queen Katherine and Prince Rainier pass.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: At the west door of the Abbey, Officers of the Order of Knighthood descend from upstairs to begin the Coronation Procession. It will be a procession composed of elements of both the Church and State, the Spiritual and Temporal life of our land.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: Representatives of The Knights of the most noble Order of the Garter make their way down the naive first, in their blue robes. They are followed by representatives of the most honorable Order of the Protea, in robes of green.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: The rich blue carpet spreads down the aisle of the sanctuary, which hides the black and white checkered floor of the choir of the Abbey. The beautiful contrast of colors inside the abbey is on full display.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: Once again the color changes and there comes the most ancient Order of the Iwé, in scarlet robes.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: After a brief gap, the Prime Minister of Brindleton Bay along with the Prime Minister of Sulani follow. Behind them, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the Rt. Hon. Sir Linwood Keller, Knight of the Garter.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: Immediately behind the Prime Minister is the Dean of Westsimster. He leads the next procession through the screen under the orchestra and the organ and out into the brilliance of the choir. We see them now, high above the alter, as the Cross of Westsimster is born by the Rev. Hilliard.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: Following the dean are Representatives from the churches of Windenburg and Brindleton Bay, showing the processions transition from State to Church.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: The Church of Winenburg representatives include the Lord Bishops who end the first part of the coronation procession.
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: After a brief pause, we see a glimpse of the Heralds in their full splendor. Four Windenburg heralds followed by one Brindleton Bay herald stand as trumpets play announcing The Queen.
Shon Gableton [SNN]: With the sound of the trumpets anthem, The Queen and Prince consort's arrival at the Abbey has been announced.

The 9th January 2000 saw the death of the historical novelist Nigel Tranter.
Tranter was the most prolific Scottish writer of all time, writing mainly factual and fictional books related to Scottish history, if you haven't read any of his work I recommend you do, the attention to detail takes nothing away from enjoyable stories. In my opinion the only other Scottish writer to come close to the volume and quality of work in this field is Sir Walter Scott.
His grandfathers were church ministers, but a great-grandfather invented the Tranter pistol. He was descended also from James Watt, inventor of the steam engine. He himself wanted to become a restoring architect, but the early death of his father forced him to stop studying. Instead he trained as an accountant and worked in the Scottish National Insurance Company. He served in the Royal Artillery during World War II.
Tranter went to George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, which may have inspired his love of castles. His earliest writing on these was at the age of 13. As a boy he spent hours cycling to castles and mansions, and drawing them in meticulous detail, before going on to write about them in his first published book, The Fortalices and Early Mansions of Southern Scotland, 1400-1650, at the age of 22. This was followed by the five volumes of The Fortified House in Scotland. In later life he loved to take visitors out to castles and assisted many castle restoration projects in Scotland such as Fa’side.
He married May Jean Campbell Grieve in Athelstaneford Church in July 1933 and they had two children. He and May worked together on The Queen’s Scotland series, giving a short history of parishes in four Scottish regions until her death in 1979, when the project stopped.
Their son Philip was a climber, who sadly died in a car crash in 1966 on his way home from an expedition in the Dolomites. Tranter wrote No Tigers in the Hindu Kush from Philip’s notes.
Tranter saw himself primarily as a storyteller rather than a historian, and his first novel, Trespass, was published in 1937. Although criticised by some academic historians for writing fiction, he developed a huge new audience, who loved his tales of Scottish historical events and people. He wrote his fiction with increasing knowledge of Scottish history, introducing the subject to millions of people worldwide. From 1947 he decided he could earn a living by writing, and produced several novels for children, as well as adults. The Bruce Trilogy sold over 1 million copies and he had fan clubs in many countries. He also wrote Westerns, using the pen name Nye Tredgold.
Nigel Tranter received many honours and awards during his life, and was also actively involved in several organisations, including the St Andrews Society of East Lothian, Scottish PEN, Athelstaneford Flag Fund and the Saltire Society. He believed Scots should ‘be responsible for our own decisions’, and as chairman of the East Lothian Liberal Association for 15 years, he was part of the Scottish Convention, a cross-party pressure group set up to push for devolution. ‘We Scots are different, not better, but long live the difference’.
He continued to write into his 90s, starting each day with a walk across the wooden bridge at Aberlady Bay which he called ‘The Footbridge to Enchantment’. He was a familiar sight walking on the coast, stopping to jot down neat notes for his books on cards or even shells picked up from the beach. Some of these can be seen in the Tranter Museum, which is currently in Athelstaneford Parish Church. His last novel was Envoy Extraordinary. On his death thousands mourned and many friends and residents in the county remember him with great fondness.
Tranter and his family are buried in Aberlady Churchyard. There is a memorial cairn to him at the carpark near the footbridge which leads over to the nature reserve at Aberlady. The Scottish Castles Association have an annual Nigel Tranter Memorial Award in his memory.

Touring St. George’s gorgeous Gothic Revival home in Dublin, Ireland. It’s actually a smaller castle home with 5 bds. and 3 baths. Someone bought it for €8.500.000 (APPROX $10,000,000 USD). So, let’s see what they got:
The timber staircase forms the dramatic rise to the first floor from the entrance hallway. It has a solid Oak handrail and Pitch Pine detailing St Brigid’s cross shapes.
Two drawing rooms can be separated by pocket doors.
I’m guessing that those are stairs in the turret.
The main drawing room opens to a conservatory added in the early 20th century.
The fireplace is made of Portland Stone with decorative frieze detail, pink polished marble columns and delicate brass inset.

There is a Pitch Pine fireplace in the inner hall with Portland Stone inset and Arts and Crafts tiled detail. The hall, in keeping with Victorian tradition, is essentially symmetrical, with two doorways positioned on either side, leading into the principal rooms; the drawing room and the dining room respectively.
The dining room faces the front of the house with views out towards the Bay through a canted bay window.
This is a traditional European Oak kitchen with black granite worktops, Belfast sink and a pale cream Aga.
A breakfast nook in the main bd.
The main bedroom is described as luxuriously appointed, so it seems that the furnishings came with it, or at least the draperies.
St George’s is an impressive towered and gabled red-brick Gothic-Revival house built in the late 1870’s designed by George Coppinger Ashlin, one of the leading Irish architects of the 19th century.
It’s one of the finest examples of both the neo-Gothic and Arts and Crafts movements.
All of the homes are on very private tree-surrounded properties near the water.

It has come to my attention that it's Period Drama Appreciation Week 2023.
I love period dramas and grew up watching them. They have been a formative part of my life and I'm now too disabled to watch video. Even gifs are too difficult for my brain to process.
It is also Bi Visibility Week and I'm posting this on Bisexual Visibility Day.

Last Day in Paradise
Wednesday 1st June 2022
One advantage of travelling mid-week is that the hotel is quieter and as a result, we were all able to obtain a late check-out of our rooms, giving us a full day to relax and enjoy the beach facilities.
Angie being the ever-intrepid explorer, decided she was going to swim all the way across Castle Harbour to Coney Island and back. To the rest of us it seemed a foolhardy thing to want to do and we watched as she disappeared into the distance. Truth to tell, Peter took out a kayak and followed her, so she wasn’t in any danger. When she returned, she and Andrew played Computer Scrabble but in the bright sun, she had a novel way of seeing the screen!
Not to be outdone, however, yours truly decided to christen a kayak for the first time. Being a novice and sun-sensitive to boot, I was a bit wary of the heat and exposure but I’m pleased to say that I made it across the harbour and back in one piece and it was great fun. My knees are a bit pink now though!
Coming back, Grotto Bay beach seemed rather a long way! It was about 1km altogether but my steering was a bit erratic and even the gentle breeze was enough to keep blowing me off-course!
Another of the unique features of Grotto Bay are the limestone caves, all part of the same system we explored in Blue Hole Park the other day. One of the caves is today used for spa treatments and therapies, while the other, in its more natural state, is available for swimming for those who don’t mind a cold dip - like guess who….
Sadly, it was time to take our leave of Grotto Bay and head to the airport. The swish new terminal is dream come true for all air travellers; hardly any queue at check-in or security; one flight expected (ours) and real cut-glass tumblers for my G&T in the lounge!

Allen's Lookout, BC (No. 2)
The Indigenous name for the river is Nêtʼił Tué', which means Hanging Down River in the Kaska language. The name comes from a particularly narrow spot near the river's headwaters, where Kaska people used to set goat snares. The "hanging down" - "Nêtʼił" part of the name refers to the snares. The origin of the river's name in mainstream use today is obscure, but is derived from the French word for "Eastern Cottonwood" (a kind of poplar) which grow in abundance along sections of the river. Among the early fur traders, who traveled the river corridor the Liard above the Fort Nelson River was referred to as the "West Branch," while the Fort Nelson River was the "East Branch."
The first European to traverse most of the river was John McLeod of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Leaving Fort Simpson on June 28, 1831, McLeod and eight others ascended the river, reaching and naming the Dease River in just over six weeks. Four days later, they reached the Frances River, and mistakenly ascended it, thinking it was the Liard's main branch. Nine years later, another HBC employee, Robert Campbell, journeyed to the source of the Liard in the St. Cyr Range, renaming the river McLeod had ascended for Frances Ramsay Simpson, the wife of the Sir George Simpson, the HBC's governor who had authorised both expeditions.
The entire Yukon and British Columbia's portion of the river corridor is said to be the traditional unceded territory of the Kaska Dena, who have lived in the area for thousands of years and claim it as their rightful home. This claim is contested by both the Acho Dene Koe First Nation and Fort Nelson First Nation who count among their memberships the former residents of communities along the Liard, east of the Grand Canyon of the Liard, like Nelson Forks, La Jolie Butte, and Francois, where the Acho Dene Koe signed Treaty 11. Their descendants still live and hunt in the area to this day. Despite Kaska Dene claims, much of the area has been recognized as Fort Nelson and Acho Dene Koe First Nation territory under Treaty 8 and 11 since 1910 and 1922 respectively.
