Self / Independent Learner's Guide to Language Learning From Zero
-a mini study plan I used this for Spanish, French and Italian, it is my favourite way of starting to learn. It won't teach you the langauge but if this is your first time, if you feel confused and don't know where to begin, this is for you! -this is kinda romance langauge based but might give you ideas if you are learning from a different family too -this is very notebook / writing based since i prefer learning that way Step 1: Preperation
First of all, ask yourself "do i already have some amount of immersion in this langauge?" As humans, we learn from immersion a lot. Songs, but especially visual media is incredibly heplful. I never studied japanese but after watching a few animes i picked up 5-10 random words. Passive vocabulary, being familiar to most common words will be your biggest friend. If the answer is no, before start studying ANYTHING do some immersion. e.g. I watched dix pour cent for French and learned arrêt which means stop because characters were shouting to each other all the time.
After making sure you have some immersion or if you already have some, PREPARE YOUR RESOURCES. Make a file in your computer, reblog tumblr posts, save links. Search for pdfs in google. (x language a1 pdf / x langauge a1 grammar book / x language a1 reading) Free PDF's and and useful websites. The more the merrier. Why? Because when you actually start learning you will slowly realise them half of them are not actually useful, too advance, too simple, not in your preffered style etc. You will en up using same handful amount of resources again and again but before that, you have to TRY EVERYTHING. You are unique and so will be your learning process.
Google x language A1 curriculum. (you can try adding "pdf" at the end of sentence as well) It "probably/ hopefully" exists. If you can't find that way, learn which offical exam is necessary (e.g. for French it's DELF/DALF, in english there is IELTS and so many more) If you are lucky, you can find a langauge teaching enstitute's curriculum and you can find in what order they teach things. This was very helpful for me because sometimes you don't know what to study next, or just want to visualise what do you need to learn, it is helpful. I printed one out and paste it to the back cover of my notebook. You won't need this one YET. I'll explain in a second. Keep reading.
Get a notebook. I don't prefer books while learning from zero because it will be filled with vocabulary you don't know. My pereference is no squares no lines empty ass notebook and colorful pens. I'm a person of shitty doodles. I love to draw and visualise things. It really helps my brain. In A1, your knowledge is absouletly zero and your brain is about the explode with realising GREAT MASS of knowledge you need to learn in order to be "fluent" . So keep things away from being "too much" if you want to avoid a burnout.
Set a timer. If you want to avoid burnout, the secret is always quit when you feel like you can go another round happily. Quit when you are dopamine high. If you study too much, next day you'll wake up tired, want to rest etc. and make it harder for you to create a habit. I did this mistake with French by studying 4-5 hours everyday for around 30 days. I completed my challenge, completly quit and then didn't come back for MONTHS.
You will be re-studying A LOT. Language learning is repetition. You will start by studying "the A1 curriculum". But, because this is your first time your focus will be on the vocabulary and general comprehension. You are trying to re-wire your brain, and learn a different way of thinking and living. It's not easy. It will take time. It will be painful at times. But it is 100% worth it.
After you finished studying your curriculum, you'll take a short break and then study the curriculum AGAIN. For a second time. Because you already know the basics, this time you will be able to focus more on the little things you weren't able to comprehend the last time. e.g. articles or whatever little frustaring thing your langauge has. Also focus more on basic prononciation and especially reading aloud. Find a realistic text-to-reader. Copy-paste a text. Listen and repeat.
Get a new Youtube and Instagram account dedicated to langauge study. How many good resources exists and where they are is really depens on which langauge you are learning. For english, youtube is better. For French, instagram is better. You have to see for yourself. If you get a seperate account for your langauge algorith will learn faster and you won't be distracted by other stuff. Short form engaging videos are the best for absolute beginners. Re-watch things and try to repeat them out loud. It's called shadowing and is your future best friend.
If you want to learn how to speak, you first need to how to write. If you can't write sentences without looking at google translate (or reverso) you won't be able to make up sentences in your head. If you want to learn how to write, your first need to learn how to read. You need to start in this order but also don't be perfectionist. Do it even if you do it wrong. They will be fixed eventually and won't stick. Record yourself speaking even if the text you are reading is 90% google translated. Why? Beacuse speaking will enhance your vocabulary in a way no other thing can and that's the core of reading. So this isn't a linear thing. It's actually a circle!
Step Two! Ok, Sadie, i got my notebooks and read through all the warnings where do i start? *First page: [] means written is target langauge
[x notebook] x= your target langauge
Add something cute and make you feel happy to open up the notebook. It can a drawing, a picture, anything. First page is your entrance to your new home. Make it welcoming.
*[My name is X. I am Y years old. I live in Z.] *Greetings. Main articles if there are any. Yes, no, please, thank you. *What is your name, what do you do for living, how are you, where are you from, how old are you, how many langauges do you speak, numbers from 0-100. If there are multiple way of saying these things and probably there are, just write one. You will eventually learn others. Baby steps. *write a basic ass text of two people having a conversation asking and answering these questions.
*the alphabet and how to pronounce the letters. basic letter combinations that change into a different sound. a youtube video about this 100% exists.
*personal pronouns and if there is a "am/is/are" verb the conjugation of it. (in spanish there is two unfortunately) *artciles and basic noun endings. a couple exemples of nouns in x form but takes y article. *first 5 most common verbs. learn the conjugation, try writing basic ass sentences. (e.g. to come, go, have, speak)
*three more verbs (e.g. to eat, can, to want)
*take some time to fully comprehend. check your curriculum list to look and see if you want to add anything. e.g.for spanish that can be ser vs estar, for spanish is can be "how to ask questions in french" becaue it's way harder compared to other langauges.
*take some break from grammar and learn some vocab maybe. it can be colors, or feelings. (i am sad, i am hungry etc.)
*start studying most common verbs. usually a form of categorization exists. usually it's verb ending. (unless it's a language like turkish where every verb either ends with -mek or -mak lol.) Start with 10- 15 most common verbs. You will also be learning some vocabulary by default. (try to stick to regular verbs if you can, if not that's fine) (Do not learn any verbs you won't be able to use immediately.)
*Learn basic adjectives and how they work so you can form more detailed sentences.
*After comprehending how to form basic positive negative sentences and some verbs, congratulate yourself, because you deserve it! *Learn how tell time. "What time is it? It's x'o clock."
*learn clothing and how to simply describe physical look e.g. hair color, eye color, beard, glasses...
*learn the verbs of daily routine. be able to write a generic ass "i wake up, i do breakfast, i eat lunch at school, i sleep" sort of text.
*demonstratives. this that. these. those. you can add some vocabulary you like. this is a cat. this is a tree. you can add placement adjectives now or later. (the cat is under the sofa. the bird is on the table etc.)
*Now you know a lot of things! Take some time and focus a bit more on the vocab, let your brain process things, do some passive immersion. avoid a burnout at all costs. *learn how to say "there is" (if you want more vocab transportation and city centre themes can be included.) *learn how to talk about your hobbies. This is the generic A1 curriuculum. You are able to understand basic things, you have a generic comprehension. That's all it takes to be considered A1. If you want to pass it though, what you need is a good grammar source. For French and Spanish Kwiziq was very useful. I couldn't find a good online grammar resource for Italian yet. (please ask more experienced langblrs for recs.) Slowly learn more vocab (since A1 is more vocab based. If you hate Anki and Quizlet stuff check Linguno. Actually check Linguno anyway it's a banger and i'm gonna die on that hill.)
If you don't have have native friend to ask questiones and you don't have any ethical concerns ChatGPT can be useful. I'm using it for French for months. Why are we using this particle here, why this and not that, can you give me some example sentences.... you can play guess the animal, ask for writing prompts and then make ChatGpt find and explain your mistakes to you. It's very handy.
*Don't be scared to share about your journey on Tumblr and most importantly ENJOY!

Library Tips For Magic Practitioners
As a Missouri librarian, I've gotten to know my library district pretty well. So here are some tips for you!
Tip 1: Dewey is your friend.
And by that I mean the Dewey Decimal System (a more in-depth list is in that link) is your friend. It breaks down as follows:
000: General Knowledge (encyclopedias, newspapers, almanacs, etc)
100: Psychology & Philosophy (feelings, logic, friendships, etc)
200: Religions & Mythology (Bible stories, Native American myths, classical mythology, etc)
300: Social Sciences & Folklore (families, career, money, government, etc)
400: Languages (English, Spanish, American Sign Language, grammar, etc)
500: Math & Science (arithmetic, animals, rocks, plants, fossils, etc)
600: Medicine & Technology (inventions, machines, farming, health, etc)
700: Arts & Recreation (crafts, painting, music, games, sports, etc)
800: Literature (poetry, plays, novels from other countries, etc)
900: Geography & History (countries, biographies, etc)
If you're looking for ghosts, divination, and witchcraft specifically, look around 133. That's where I've found most of my magic-based books to borrow. You'll also find books talking about people's near-death experiences or reincarnation around this point.
While fiction technically falls in the 800s, most libraries will have it separate from nonfiction. You may still find things like poems or memoirs in the nonfiction section. Some libraries will have the biographies separated into their own section. A few libraries (at least here in Missouri) will have state-specific sections where you can learn more about local stuff.
Tip 2: There are computers and printers to use.
If you can't research something at home for literally any reason, getting a library card will often grant you access to using the computers and printers in the library.
When using the printer, some libraries will charge based on how much ink you use, other libraries will charge based on how much paper you use, and other libraries will charge based on some other criteria.
Be aware that you lose access to these if you reach a certain level of overdue materials or money is charged to your library card until the materials are returned/paid for or the money is paid off. Luckily, librarians are here to help you and can tell you what's missing.
Tip 3: Libraries have more than books.
Seriously. The main branch of my library district has 3D printers, telescopes, gaming systems to use in-building, and more stuff that I didn't even pay attention to because I was scrambling to learn the behind-the-counter stuff. Feel free to ask us for something and we can see if it's in-county for ya!
Audiobooks are often available on CDs and in the form of Playaways, which are like MP3 players with a single book on them. You will need a wire-connected set of earbuds or a wire-connected headset and batteries. Some libraries sell earbuds, but not batteries.
Large Print books will often have their own special designation as LP, but more often they have their own shelf sections. You'll find a surprising number of Westerns there, but there are Large Print nonfiction books.
Tip 4: Requesting materials.
Not finding something you're looking for? Ask the front desk for help! In Missouri, we have the Missouri Evergreen system, which means we can borrow books from all over the state* on the topic you're looking for.
If we can't find it (or you're in a library that doesn't have such a monumental reach), then you can often fill out a book request form. We will then do our best to order the book for you - but be aware that it could take many months, and most of the time, people will cancel their order of the book well before our budget catches up or we even have time to get the book processed and integrated into the system. Patience is key when ordering a new book.
*At participating branches - not every library district in our state is part of Missouri Evergreen.
Tip 5: Self-checkout is a thing.
At least, it is here in Missouri. If you don't want to interact with the front desk, there are often self-checkout stations for books, DVDs, audiobooks, et cetera. Even my middle-of-nowhere branch has one!
Unfortunately, this won't work for other things, like updating your card once it expires or resolving monetary charges (which will both send you to the front desk).
Tip 6: Search the new shelves.
Some libraries like mine will have specially-designated "New Shelves", where you can find a lot of the most recent releases. If you're trying to find something in a particular number that you saw on the search but can't find it, it may be on the new shelf. These get cycled out whenever new books come in, which may mean that you have several months' worth of new releases to dig through.
In short, I hope this helps you in your search through the library! Best of luck to you!
~Jasper

Two Sides To The Devil - Johnny Slaughter (Episode 1)
Tumblr media
Previous Episode ♡ Next Episode
Completed series :)  This is the first episode of my 8 part series. I hope you enjoy it, I really enjoyed writing this <3 Summary: Johnny Slaughter kidnaps you and you wake up in his basement. You negotiate your way out of death by offering to lure in male victims with your beauty. Johnny entertains your desperate offer. He ends up having to protect you and slowly starts to fall in love with his victim, and so do you.  Word count: 2,709 Warnings: MDNI, corpse, kidnapping, controlling behavior
You feel like you got hit by a truck. Your brain felt like it was gonna beat out of your head and your vision was all blurry. You’re trying to grasp at any memory of what had you in this state. Once your vision starts getting back to normal, you realize you're in an unfamiliar place. It's not until now that you also realize you're hanging from a hook to the ceiling. You try to move but feel a stinging pain from your wrists. They were numb until you moved them and now you had gained another painful sensation you had to deal with- in addition to your head.
You shut your eyes hard and try to remember… remember the night before. But you can't think of anything. You continue to think until your thoughts get interrupted by what sounds like a heavy sliding door slide open. You start panicking and you debate whether or not to scream for help. You chose to stay still, pretending to be knocked out until you get a glimpse of who it is. It wouldn't be wise to scream, drawing attention to you.
Heavy footsteps head towards you and your heart’s beating faster, your adrenaline wanting to kick in and scream bloody murder, but you hold back. The footsteps get louder until they stop right in front of you. The man grabs your chin to have you face him. You couldn't help but flinch when he first touched you. Your attempts at remaining ‘passed out’ failed as the man definitely felt you jitter. “open your eyes or i'll scoop them out of your head”. he demanded with a low and monotone voice. You carefully open your eyes so as to not upset him further and you look down on this man standing in front of you. He was big, too big and any thoughts of fighting your way out was abolished. He gave you a smirk seeing your terrified expression clearly holding back tears. “Relax darlin’ i'm just messing with ya’... that's not really my style”.
Your head is still killing you but he looked familiar and there was no doubt he was the one responsible for putting you in this god awful place. Your senses are slowly coming back to you and you feel the stench of, what could only be described as, iron, filling your nose. Looking around, you see dead pigs gutted and hung on the wall. You realize you're in a cold room, the chills didn't hit you until that very moment. Until you saw something that made your stomach turn in the worst way imaginable. On the butchering table there was a whole dead body of a human. You could barely make out that it was a woman, she was skinned all over and you immediately looked away, letting a small noise of disgust escape your mouth as you turned the other direction and winced.
The severity of the situation hits you harder than before and you see your life flash before your eyes. You were next. You knew it. He was here. He IS here. “Listen, i don't mean to scare you but you know… there is no polite way of doing this”. He seems amused by the sheer terror on your face after seeing the dead body and realizing you're next. “Please sir, what do you want?” you look down and shut your eyelids, letting a tear fall from your eyes. You know these are your last moments.
Before letting him answer you felt a small surge of energy flowing through you like a last fighting chance to live “i'll do anything, please don't kill me!” He looks at you tilting his head like he was studying you, you know that he’s probably heard it a million times. “I'll do anything”, you repeat it to emphasize how you really meant it. He just stares at you, listening to your defeated cries. You take this moment to study him back and you finally realize where you recognize this man from.
You had gotten all dolled up to go to a bar. You flirted with this man that ended up taking you to his car. Before you knew it you were knocked into the ground. Fading in and out of consciousness, you remember glimpses of him holding onto the steering wheel with one hand, and smoking a cigarette with the other. You remember seeing far stretches of empty land outside the window and every now and then he would look at you and smirk, like he was proud of his catch. “I met you at the bar” you mumble, your head aching from all the thinking you had to do to unfold these revelations. “Correct” he says simply, verifying your vague memories.
“Please, i'll do anything” you repeat for the third time, it seemed to, at the very least, make him think, buying you more time left on this earth. He finally acknowledges your statement. “Tell me darlin’ what value could you provide for me?” Even though you asked for it, you didn't expect him to entertain your offer seriously. You gather all information available to you and come to the obvious conclusion… “I can help you lure in other victims, and in exchange, you spare my life.” he lets out a chuckle. “What makes you think I need help luring in victims? I did a pretty good job catching you.” He has a point. You thought to yourself for a second… “...but… I can lure in men.” you whisper, not being very confident with your answer.
You weren't sure if it was gonna work. You felt like you were playing chess with the devil. You see him contemplate your offer and you start to see some light at the end of the tunnel. “You make it hard denying you darlin’. I have no doubts you have no issue catching the attention of men. But how do i know you wont run off or call for help” You make a risky play that could very well hit- as it could miss “you’ll just have to keep an eye on me, won't you? you didn't seem to have an issue with that back at the bar” your voice was careful but suggestive. He couldn't keep his eyes off you earlier, licking his lips and undressing you with his eyes. This was a good soft spot to hit in order to get on his good side, your sex appeal never fails. “You got my hands tied sweetheart. Ain't no denyin’”. He cuts open the rope around your ankles, puts a cloth sack over your head and unhooks you from the ceiling. “Checkmate” you proudly muttered to yourself.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
Your captor grabs you firmly by the arm and yanks you up the stairs and into, what you assume, the car from earlier. He pushes you into the car, giving you some time to adjust. “Don't you dare pull some sneaky shit or I won't hesitate to slit your throat” he slams the passenger side door shut, he walks around to the other side and you hear the driver's door open. You feel the car rumble into motion and take off.
With the cloth sack still over your head, you felt trapped. How was this actually gonna pan out? You thought it was best to gain his trust by talking to him. All things considered, he's been nice… he could've killed you but strangely chooses to spare you… you couldn't figure out why. Is this a part of his game? Is he bringing me to another location to finish the job? Your mind is making up all sorts of scenarios trying to make sense of this monster. “It's kind of dark in here” you try to make light of the situation… no pun intended. "Oh? and what do you suggest?” you couldn't see him but you could hear him smiling while asking his question. “We could start by taking off the sack, maybe?” you're still cautious with your words, afraid he’ll snap but you’re growing more confident, as you truly believe he won't kill you, at least not yet. “That way, I get to talk to you face to face” you try moving around in your seat, arching your back to get more comfortable. You let little moans escape your mouth, trying to influence his decision. You hear him let out a defeated sigh.
You feel the sack slide off your head, ruffling up your hair in the process. You get blinded due to the pitch blackness you were in seconds ago. You squint your eyes and look over to the man. You can't believe the man that swept you off your feet with his charm last night, is the same man who has you tied up in his truck, while forcing you to help catch more victims. It felt surreal, how did I even get in this situation? stuff like this only happened in movies or books.
“You’re awfully quiet, I thought you wanted ‘face to face’”. He says playfully while taking glances at you then back at the road. “Well I can hardly see. You made my hair get all messy!”. You keep nodding and bowing your head trying to gesture for him to fix it, since your hands were tied behind your back.
He lets out a quick chuckle and starts flattening your hair with his right hand. He stays looking at the road and avoids eye contact for the most part. You, on the other hand, are looking straight at him, still trying to figure this man out. Why was he doing this? It didn't make sense. You felt like a little kitten being pet by their owner.
When he felt that he was done and that you looked presentable, you expected him to put his hand back on the steering wheel and ignore you for the rest of the ride. Instead, he grabbed your face with the same hand that was brushing your hair. He made sure to squeeze a little, forcing a pouty expression onto your face. “You look beautiful darlin’”. You were shocked by the suddenness of it all but couldn't help but blush at his words. You couldn't talk with him still holding you but you managed to mutter something along the lines of “mmthankmmyu”. It was pretty incoherent but before he let go of your face he continued, “whatever boy you manage to lure, I don't want him touching you alright?”.
Even though this little song and dance is about power and control, you felt butterflies form between your legs, making you shut your thighs to get a hold of them. You've always found it attractive for men to take control, even when it could be seen as toxic. In this case ‘toxic’ wouldn't even begin to cover what this man was. You nod in submission, you thought it would make it a little harder to forbid the victim from touching you, but not impossible.
He lets go of your face and takes a glance down to your lips. You catch him and it was as if he didn't want you to by the way he quickly turned his head back to the road, but you didn't think much of it. “We’re almost there, turn around for me” you weren't sure what it meant but you faced the window, making your back face him. You try your best to peek behind you to see what he's about to do next. He pulls out his knife and you feel the rope that previously held your wrists together, slice open.
You take turns rubbing your wrists on each hand, they’re numb from how tight they were tied together. “Thank you” you muttered to him, looking down to show gratitude. He gives you a quick nod as a non-verbal ‘you're welcome’.
For the first time you drew your attention to the outside of your window. The sun was setting, it was not quite pitch black yet, but in an hour or so it would be. The sky was clear and you thought about how beautiful the stars would look on a cloud free evening such as this. You came to realize, you didn't remember his name.
You turn your attention back to the stranger, “I don't remember your name.” you look at him with a puzzled expression and a raised eyebrow, because surely he had told you back at the bar. “Why do you need my name, I don't know yours”. He was staring you right in the eyes, as if he was hinting towards him wanting to know my name. “My name is Mikaela, your turn.” you feel proud over this small interaction you've managed to gather with this killer. It made him seem almost human again, like when you first met him. “Pretty name for a pretty girl. Name’s Johnny”. He gives you a small smirk. "Handsome name for a handsome man”.
You cover your mouth with your left hand holding back a giggle, like a schoolgirl who just told her crush she liked him. His smirk grows bigger and he locks eyes with you. He puts his hand on your left thigh and gives you a gentle squeeze. You hold his eye contact for a couple of seconds until you cover your face with both your hands to hide your hard blushing. This man was good at making the butterflies go crazy. His gaze alone made your stomach twirl and his hands traveling across your body was sure to leave a pool between your legs.
You feel the car slow down and you take a look around. The window no longer greeted you with far stretches of empty desert, but instead there were town roads, buildings, boutiques and lights. “We’re here” he snapped back into the low, husky monotone personality his voice had. And just like that you were pulled back into the reality that is your life. You needed to fight to find another man to take your place in that cold room, you couldn't let Johnny down, or he would deal with you the same way he dealt with that woman on the butchering table.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
Johnny gets out of his car and walks over to your side, opening the door for you. “How polite, thank you sir” you tease him, getting really addicted to his facial expressions whenever you would confidently flirt with him. It was an amused expression, one that encouraged your behavior, and whatever keeps you alive longer, you'll continue doing.
Johnny closes the car door behind you and he pushes you somewhat roughly against the car. This was the first time you were standing this close to him and you took notice of how tall he was compared to you, you truly felt like a little bunny getting preyed on by a lion. He was so close you could feel the warmth of his body bouncing off yours. His scent filled your nose, it was a masculine and but perfectly balanced perfume. A small string of his slick, black hair was falling down over his forehead. His heavy breathing, making it sway back and forth.
He looks down to you, and somehow gets even closer than before, “you remember what i told you in the car?” his right hand was pressing your shoulder into the metal surface behind you and the other was placed on the surface to trap you between his arms. You look up at his narrowed eyes. If looks could kill, you'd be dead on the floor right now. You nod while maintaining eye contact “yes Johnny, no touching” you felt like you were in trouble already, yet you haven't even stepped foot in the bar. “good girl, i will keep a close eye on you”. He removes his hand from your shoulder and once again, cups your face. “When we get in this bar, I'll need you to find someone quick. Once you bring him outside, I'll take over, sound good?” He steps back letting the cool air replace his warmth. He gestures with his head to follow behind him, and you do as he suggests.

All witchcraft is magic, but not all magic is witchcraft. Don't go telling non-witches that their practices (whether religious or otherwise) are "technically witchcraft", ESPECIALLY if you mean it as a "gotcha". The only person who looks bad in that situation is you.
