Ben Chonzie's boring, they said. Nothing to see here, they said. Talking out their a***s!
Great day out yesterday, making the most of the tail-end of winter before the humid wet soggy summer really takes hold. As soon as I parked up at the loch and opened the door...I was greeted by the sound of curlew, willow warblers, oystercatchers....and my first cuckoo! Very much felt like coming home :)
Plenty to see later on including ptarmigan, red grouse, mountain hare, red kite, peregrine, stonechat....and two ring ouzels!! And of course very heavy snow just at the right time, on the summit, resulting in poor visibility and a bit of nav practice. All with a beaming smiling face :)

Route: Pocket Mountain from Glen Turrett
Height: 931m
Date: 14 January 2017
Time to summit: 4h 39min
Total time: At least 8h - didn’t get home until 4am via a trip to A+E
With: Dominic
Weather: Sunshine, cold and snowy underfoot all the way, some wind at times
Notes: We were slightly later starting than originally planned, partly because of faff leaving and partly because the track up to the car park was very icy so Dom had to execute a scary 3-point-turn so we could park with the other cars in a lay-by. We set off up the icy track until we got to the carpark at the dam and then crossed over to the east side of Loch Turrett.
The way went along a track for a short while and then cut up the hillside. It was snowy underfoot but we were mostly following a fairly obvious line. Eventually we began to climb a bit more steeply when Dom realised he didn’t have his hat. We couldn’t spot it obviously close by and so Dom ended up going back down the steep way we’d just come to look for it. When he was down at the bottom, I spotted something moving in the wind - the hat, just a short way down. I rescued it and Dom made his way back up.
The wind was reasonably strong when we got onto the ridge but the views were very good as it was so crisp and clear. We continued along the route along the undulating ridge, stopping in a dip for our lunch. Dom’s group shelter provided some welcome respite from the wind. After eating we carried on along to Càrn Chòis with its rocky top and trig point and then over broader ground to Meall na Séide.
Eventually we met the track coming up from Glen Lednock and a lot more people. We’d gone this route up Ben Chonzie previously on a misty and quite damp evening after tea a few summers ago. The route from there was pretty straightforward, following the fence along a not too steep slope. We got to the summit without any problems and stopped to have some food and some mint tea. It was very clear and there were fantastic views of lots of other snowy mountains.
Tumblr media
We continued on along the ridge a short way to a break in the cliffs between Ben Chonzie and Biotech a’ Mheannain. The book described this as looking tricky but being okay and indeed it was. We made our way down an easy snowy gully and then went across a mix of snowy and boggy ground to meet the track near Lochan Uaine.
The track was fairly good, although a bit icy in places. It was a reasonable distance still back to the car and the light levels were dropping a bit, but we thought as we were on the track it should be fairly straightforward. Alas this was not the case. About 2km from the car Dom slipped over on the ice. I asked him if he was okay, expecting to hear that he was fine, but instead he said no.
With some help he managed to get up but his ankle was feeling very odd and he couldn’t put any weight on it. He managed to make it about    5m and I thought he was about to faint so he sat down. We realised it was time to call out mountain rescue. The signal on my phone was patchy but was quite good on Dom’s phone. We first got through to the Police and the Tayside Mountain Rescue.
Over the next couple of hours while we waited we made sure that we were nice and warm, putting on all our layers and wrapping Dom in his group shelter and my plastic bivvy bag - I was glad I’d remembered to put it in my bag in the morning. Dom had a couple of paracetamol, an energy gel and some chocolate and seemed to gain a bit of energy. After a while we decided to go a bit further along the track - Dom managing to hop about 100m before we met a stream and a steep slope and stopped and waited.
At various points over this period we were on the phone to Mountain Rescue and the Police. The police in particular kept trying to work out where we were even though our grid reference was one of the first things we told them. This was complicated by them appearing to use the 1:25k map while we were using the 1:50k map and neither of us having a real idea how to pronounce the Gaelic names….TMRT just used a fancy thing to get the location directly from our phones.
After a while we saw some flashes of blue lights and what sounded like a siren - the police contacted us to ask if we could hear them, and then after a little while we saw headlights on the dam. We waved with our head torches and soon an Argo given by the estate gamekeeper arrived with someone from Tayside Mountain Rescue and a police search and rescue officer. We all got into a group shelter while they looked at Dom’s ankle and put some strapping on it. I went and got Dom’s bag from where we’d left it down the track and by that time the rest of the mountain rescue team had arrived. The decision was made for us to go in the Argo to the point on the road where it was gritted, where there was an ambulance waiting.
It was a speedy, but quite bumpy ride along the frozen tracks in the dark. We passed another mountain rescue person along the track who’s car had got stuck just before where my car was. I got out there, while Dom continued along in the Argo. Fortunately the gamekeeper came back to direct me driving very very slowly and quite scarily along the icy road. The paramedics thought Dom had most likely sprained his ankle and offered to take him to hospital in Perth, but we thought it would be best to go all the way to Ninewells in Dundee.
The dive back wasn’t too bad, and we made it to A+E around 10pm. At this point the waiting room was mainly people who had fallen on the ice and children, although as the night progressed there were more people coming in covered in blood from fights in pubs…After about 3 and half hours Dom got seen - the x-ray showed he’d broken his fibula and dislocated it quite badly. The doctor, after giving Dom morphine and gas and air, tried to get it back in position but wasn’t able to, so he had to be admitted. I got back home about 4am, quite tired and hungry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Postscript: Dom had surgery to put in screws and a plate on the following Thursday, once the swelling had gone down and then was in a plaster cast for 2 weeks, and a moon boot for another 4 weeks, gradually putting more weight on his leg. Since then he’s been off crutches and is making good progress, including going up An Caisteal 9 weeks to the day after breaking his ankle. Many thanks to Tayside Mountain Rescue Team and all the NHS staff at Ninewells hospital.

16th Pharmacovigilance 2018
“Ensuring safer drugs to market by analyzing latest developments in pharmacovigilance, drug safety and risk management”
02nd – 04th Oct 2018, Double Tree Suites By Hilton Boston, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
16th Pharmacovigilance 2018 will bring together top pharmaceutical, biotechnology and regulatory representatives under one roof that will address the key issues of the industry. The entire program will cover the detection, analysis and prevention of adverse drug reactions. It will be studied with the help of case studies and industry experiences. This conference will help the drug safety representatives from the pharmaceutical industry and academic and quality research organizations who wish to understand how to avoid common deficiencies in inspections by learning from the experiences of others; to gain a greater understanding of new and existing pv requirements, and to improve their organizations’ compliance with pv requirements. Also it can help you control your product’s lifecycle, your patient’s trust, and your revenue. Blethering Ben - 91 - Auchnafree Hill via Loch Turret
Autumn is here! And what better way to celebrate than with a sunny visit to upland Perthshire? This walk heads up Glen Turret to visit a range of hills too often derided for being 'boring'. Honestly, I think those folk must walk up hillsides with blindfolds on ;-)
