Let it now be said that I am all gloom and misery. Last night I went to see Julius Casear done by the Theatre in the Rough in the park near the King David. It is always great fun though you have to run from place to place and up and down over the grass. I take my accordion  chair which I carry in my rucksack but once I have taken it out I have to run with my stick and the bag as suit as it takes time. Sometimes people help me. Otherwise I just sukkel. It was very funny and I will show you who was Brutus and who was Caesar. It is very funny as they make Caesar into a woman, Brutus the absolute antithesis of what you would imagine hime to be, a small slight woman, Cassius is a big black gentleman who would have been more likely to have been Brutus.
This is Calpurnia.
This is Caesar
This is the choir which has been introduced by the producer of the play
The woman in the burgundy...do I have the colour right...is Brutus
Can anyone tell me what this flag actually is. I saw it at the Saturday demonstration last week and it was held by a group of religious youth and also be this man who looks more Haredi. They saw they are active in Hebron against the occupation and the flat as psalms on it and has been hung for years in synagogues.
 Well and back to politics
An Israeli settler woman is shot. I grieve for her family but I will not go with Tag Maier when they go to shiva. I will go to Tag Maier when the evening news does not deal for almost the full hour with the grief of the family and what a wonderful woman she was. I wonder, a;ways,  if she and her family have been active in actions against the Palestinians. Maybe she is one of the settlers who do not take part in any such actions against the shepherds or the villages. But if not then when does she not speak up against it?
Also as I saw the grief of the family of the woman who had been killed I wondered why we were not shown, if only for a fleeting moment, the mourning family of a young Palestinian whom I had seen shot in the back as he was running back to a group and  was  shot in the back although he was unarmed and not attacking anyone. Up  to now the soldiers who carved a magen davied on the face of a Palestinian have been praised by members of the government and Ben Gvir wants to give them a medal. Another family group has fled their homes because of attacks by settlers........so   I grieve for her family but  I grieve more for the Palestinians who know that they will never find the justice they seek. In a few days time we will hear the the perpetrators have been found...those responsible hpr her death....but the soldier who shot a man in the back, the soldiers who carved a magen david, the settlers who at this every moment are harassing and stealing from the Palestinians?
I went today to hear Yischa Harani lecturing on part of the New Testament at a new center which I did not know at all. A meeting ground for pilgrims and then too  a church which I only realised at the end was so there was this beautiful altar.
In the evening I went with Yehuda and Anat to see Oppenbeimer. I found the first  part  boring but when the bomb went off and I saw people screaming and backslapping I thought of the drowning of the Egyptians and the angels singing in joy and God admonishing them. I probably would have felt different seeing the movie at the end of the war itself. I wonder how much of this was shown on the television at that time....maybe most houses did not have television.
As a result I did not go to the demonstration in the morning against Ben Gvir in Hebron and also not to Sheikh Jarrah...maybe just as well as I heard there was police violence in both places. This evening I am also not going to the demonstration as I woke up feeling very weak. I had six visitors for brunch and was worried that I would be too tired as I did not sleep well either but it must have been enjoyable to all as they came at 13.00 and only left towards 4. There were four of  of us from Machsomwatch and my friend Gioia from Sheikh Jarrah and as Andrea, her husband, is from the UN I think both sides found it interesting. Andrea and Gioia next to me.   Yehduit who live at Nofim, Hanna Barag whom I often write about and I who am going on diet.
But if you want to know what is happening with the Christians in Israel here are two examples:
Christians unwanted in Israel https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/editorial/2023-08-21/ty-article-opinion/.premium/the-damaging-rejection-of-christians-under-israels-far-right-religious-government/0000018a-1455-debf-afba-9cfff8210000?utm_source=App_Share&utm_medium=iOS_Native
At a Haifa church, Jewish pilgrims test coexistence strained by painful history
Haredi visitors outside Stella Maris say they want to pray near the presumed burial site of Prophet Elisha; churchgoers say it's just another attempt to intimidate Christians
This is what the Rabbis for Human Rights wrote about the above
The Stella Maris Monastery and Church in Haifa continues to face threats from a small Hasidic sect known as Berland Hasidim. The group continues to come to the monastery and harass the clergy and worshippers and has now received permission from the Police to hold prayer services close to the church.  Rabbis for Human Rights continues to support the Stella Maris community and this week submitted a letter signed by over 200 Rabbis to the President of the State of Israel, the Chief of Israel's Police and the Attorney General, demanding that the State safeguard this community from the threats they are facing. We were proud that the letter was signed by leading Rabbis from all streams of Judaism in Israel, and are committed to continuing and increasing our actions to protect religious practice of minorities in Israel.

ROBERTO OTTAVIANO-ETERNAL LOVE: “PEOPLE” (parte II)

Read the full article

Nanophotonics: Coupling light and matter
Science News from research organizations 1 2 Date: June 23, 2023 Source: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Summary: Researchers have developed a metasurface that enables strong coupling effects between light and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Share: advertisement FULL STORY LMU-Researchers have developed a metasurface that enables strong coupling effects between light and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). The interaction of light and matter on the nanoscale is a vital aspect of nanophotonics. Resonant nanosystems allow scientists to control and enhance electromagnetic energy at volumes smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. As well as allowing sunlight to be captured much more effectively, they also facilitate improved optical wave-guiding and emissions control. The strong coupling of light with electronic excitation in solid-state materials generates hybridized photonic and electronic states, so-called polaritons, which can exhibit interesting properties such as Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity. A new study, published in the journal Nature Materials, presents progress in the coupling of light and matter on the nanoscale. Researchers led by LMU physicist Dr. Andreas Tittl have developed a metasurface that enables strong coupling effects between light and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). This novel platform is based on photonic bound states in the continuum, so-called BICs, in nanostructured tungsten disulfide (WS2). The simultaneous utilization of WS2 as the base material for the manufacture of metasurfaces with sharp resonances and as a coupling partner supporting the active material excitation opens up new possibilities for research into polaritonic applications. An important breakthrough in this research is controlling the coupling strength, which is independent of losses within the material. Because the metasurface platform is able to integrate other TMDCs or excitonic materials without difficulty, it can furnish fundamental insights and practical device concepts for polaritonic applications. Moreover, the concept of the newly developed metasurface provides a foundation for applications in controllable low-threshold semiconductor lasers, photocatalytic enhancement, and quantum computing. advertisement Story Source: Materials provided by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. lost count of days 31.10.2023
Saturday Ellen and I again went down to Tel Aviv to be with the families of the hostages. It was good to be with people who care but it also amazes me that  so many people do not seem to care. Have I said before how much I admire the British for all the years that they endured the second world war. One month and it is like being in a continuous nightmare.
Both of us were exhausted and came back in the same state. Saturday night there was another demonstration also in the centre of town and I don't know why but it was perfectly quiet. Only about three  or four police and no hecklers which makes me even more sure that the attack on us a week and a half ago by the police was planned by them. I don't know what happened but maybe they realised they had gone too far. But now they are arresting all sorts of Arabs for posts on facebook and thought I don't like what they like but the extreme Rabbis and people like Ben Givr say and post much worse things and nothing happens to them. I also once said to you that what happens with the Palestinians would eventually  happen with those on the left against Netanyahu. Now a pilot who wrote against Netanyahu has been fired. The time will come when they will pray for him to come back.   AND THIS we would like to draw your attention to thElegislation pushed by far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir and set to be voted on in the coming days. This proposal seeks to grant police officers the right to shoot at protesters "obstructing roads or town entrances" with live ammunition. This presents a real threat to human lives and human rights by denying people’s right to demonstrate, and will undoubtedly lead to violence escalation.
Pictures from the demonstration, two babies who are kidnapped, And the last photo of the phone call all which ended suddenly, either from someone in the army or someone kidnapped  and sometimes the family is still wondering  if the person is lying dead somewhere, kidnapped or what.
\
In the evening I went again to the centre of the city to call for the captives to be brought home,  but unlike last week, when the police attacked us without restraint and without reason,  throwing women to the floor and calling them prostitutes, calling us traitors, telling us that they should not have to protect ue, this was very quiet.
There are daily attacks on Palestinians in their homes and on their grounds. Settlers protected by soldiers but I will send it separately. But This is what happened to one Arab doctor and whom Tag Maier  visited:
"We met last night with Dr. Abd Samara of Tira. Director of cardiac intensive care at Hasharon Hospital. Senior center. Dr. Abed put up a post a year and 4 months ago with a green flag, a verse from the Koran and a drawing of a dove of peace. Following the events of October 7th, social media surfers hunting "Arabs" decided that Dr. Samara had posted a support post for Hamas... No one checked with Dr. Samara and so began a witch hunt that ended with a letter of suspension from the Sharon Hospital with the support of a very senior member of the health system. Needless to say, Dr. Samara is a talented, dedicated doctor who has nothing to do with the Hamas movement. Needless to say, the post he posted is unrelated in content and time to what happened to us three weeks ago. We came to embrace Dr. Samara and his family. We call on the Minister of Health to immediately correct the terrible injustice caused to Dr. Samara. Dr. Abd Samara should be returned to his job as director of cardiac intensive care and allowed to save Jewish and Arab lives as he has done to this day with endless dedication".
More and more it is becoming like McCarthy here. |Dani Danieli whom I know from the protests has been arrested and questioned three times. And he is one of many on the left.  One of  the fascists wanted to have Gershon Baskin arrested for speaking to the Hamas, It was through his speaking to them at the time that Gilad Shalit was freed. I would not be surprised if soon they called him in too.
Every night we demonstrate outside the house of Herzog. And  again not against the government but for the release of the captives. Two nights ago the families were there meeting him.  We waited from three to after seven but it was worth it. The first woman who came out was not expecting to see people and when she saw us she covered her face in surprise and wept. They told us not to forget them and we told that we were were every night.  Cars come past and hoot support, others stop and curse us. Everything one does is seen as an act against the government. In the meantime Netanyhua's nightly broadcasts sound like something out of a Charlie Chaplin movie. The only person worth listening to it the army spokesman and one can only wonder how much of what we are hearing is  true.
Anyhow  next morning someone sent me a photo which had appeared in the Jerusalem  post of our demonstration and then I was amazed to get a whatsapp from the daughter of a friend of mine who died some years ago, Hilda with whom I had worked in South Africa.
She said they had been watching the Afrikaans news and suddenly she said to her husband....that is Natalie and she took a screenshot which she sent me.
I have been volunteering at Hansen to make sandwiches and after a morning of cutting parsley and koesbara and tomatoes I come out feeling like a salad. I take a sleeping pill but still wake up exhausted.
