El Camino makes me want to Chew My Arm Off

(I know I’ve made several posts about this movie and my problems with it but I just have to put all of my thoughts down or I’m going to explode)

so, Breaking Bad's sequel movie, El Camino… I’ve tried to like it so long, I’ve seen it 5 or 6 times, and the first few times I saw it I was firmly in denial and thought I enjoyed it even if I had a couple of arguments with it… but I’ve hit this tipping point where I just can't pretend anymore, and I just… hate this movie. and it seems like I shouldn't, right? being a Jesse lover I should be happy that he gets a hopeful, if slightly bittersweet, ending, right? because he does get a somewhat happy ending… right?

except… does he? like even when I was trying to force myself to like El Camino, I was a bit upset by the ending; it seems to be asking a lot of me to believe that Jesse is really getting a particularly hopeful “new beginning” when he’s still alone and without support and now can’t even ever confide in anyone without majorly risking revealing his identity and getting arrested. I also always felt that after the first half of the movie Jesse’s PTSD was kinda… downplayed? and I just have this feeling that might’ve been done with the purpose of making Jesse’s “hopeful” ending a lil more believable considering the circumstances, but I admit that particular aspect might just be in my head.

so that’s not great obviously, or at least it pokes a bit of a hole in the tone of El Camino’s ending for Jesse, but what really tipped me over the edge was realizing what the story communicates in presenting it’s ending as more hopeful and bittersweet instead of just kinda depressing. it communicates that what Jesse needs to do to have a happier life is just make the right choices from now on. BECAUSE YA KNOW, THIS DRUG ADDICTS PROBLEM WAS HE JUST WASN’T MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES!!!!

and I want to believe that this wasn’t intentional, I know the writers at least sympathize with Jesse, but there are scenes within El Camino that just make it really really hard for me to believe that on some level that isn’t what you’re supposed to take away from it, primarily this one -

and this scene which follows it a short time afterwards -

I think that we’re supposed to agree with what’s being said by the disappearer guy and Jesse in these scenes, that Jesse is in fact at least somewhat responsible for where he ended up. It’s hard for me to imagine that they’re scenes where you’re expected to say “oh fuck OFF!!” and “sweetheart I understand why you think that but no, they fucked up” at the screen respectively. 

now, it’s very in character for Jesse to say what he did to his parents. children who are neglected tend to blame themselves for their own hardships - and I bet Jesse also just wants to lessen the guilt that his parents might feel in general if he can cause he’s a sweet person… but I don’t understand why it was necessary to have the disappearer guy say what he said. he could have said any number of things besides “you made your own luck” to Jesse in response to Jesse not quite having enough money for an identity change, including something simple like the cost of his services is the cost of his services, no exceptions.

and since Vince Gilligan does seem to believe that there is possibly a perfect way to pull off the ending where Jesse did end up in jail even if he couldn’t write it himself I’m even more sure that he’s got a fundamental misunderstanding of the responsibility Jesse has in his actions and what might actually be useful for solving the problems Jesse does have. like yeah, Jesse’s gonna feel guilty whether or not his actions were in his reasonable control because he’s a person who cares about others getting hurt, but I’m sorry, is repentance the actual solution to that? really?

cause, tell me this; how is it useful in any way to continue to “hold Jesse accountable” for his actions by the end of Breaking Bad, isn’t the purpose of doing that to prevent someone from doing the same harmful things again? what is the point of this in Jesse’s case? the only genuinely shitty thing that was his full responsibility and was something that he had a reasonable choice to not do was his attempt to sell drugs to the rehab group, but GUESS WHAT!? Jesse snapped himself out of that idea without much of the way of people telling him it was bad to do. I think this is a lesson learned! and I keep using the term “reasonable choice” for a reason, and it’s because sometimes someone has a choice to do something sure, but it’s unreasonable to expect that every single person will make the “right” choice, like most of the worst things that Jesse does are because he is backed into a corner and/or being manipulated by Walt! oh and Jesse being a drug dealer in the first place? a) selling drugs to people who are seeking them out isn’t actually this massive act of harm long as you’re honest about what you’re selling, people will always use drugs and need to get them from somewhere, also alcohol is more toxic and kills more people than meth does, and b) so while Walt had the choice between selling meth and… accepting help from other people who think that they owe him anyway, Jesse had the choice between selling meth and poorly paying jobs, one of which we see offered is ACTUALLY humiliating, not just “ooh I have to accept help sometimes”, and actually he’d have to do this all while lacking support or help from anyone except maybe his friends who are still very involved in the drug trade because his parents are shitty fucking people who weren’t prepared or willing to have a child that wasn’t “normal”. and it's not like this makes anything that he did good or that he didn't do anything wrong I'm not suggesting that he's a perfect person, but I don't think that what he did is uniquely bad in any way.

and even if I’m wrong and the movie is actually trying to get across that Jesse didn’t USE to have choices but NOW he does I think… the ending still wraps it up badly and it still communicates a bad message. like why are we led to believe that Jesse is going to make different choices from now on? not only does he still have no outside support or resources, but he has LESS options in regards to acquiring those things than he had at the beginning of Breaking Bad and a FUCKTON of new PTSD on top of that. like I think it’s unlikely that Jesse is going to get back into the criminal world but instead of me thinking that because his life circumstances have actually improved in the ways that they should’ve it’s because he’s been through so much horrible trauma in the past that he’ll “know better”. Jesse received trauma that we’re sorta meant to interpret as him learning from, punishment that he learned from, so that now anything genuinely miserable coming up in his life will simply seem better than what he’s already been through, again rather than actually having resources to make his rough patches in life better. El Camino still puts all of the pressure onto Jesse alone to have a better life. and I think that ultimately leaves us with an ending that is bleaker than it wants to admit

I don’t know how I could write El Camino to have the happy ending for Jesse that I both want and think he deserves, at least I’ve not been able to come up with anything that feels believable enough, so sadly I think that the best way to fix it is by changing the tone of the ending so that it does feel bleaker. maybe add in a little more focus on Jesse’s PTSD and that he doesn’t really know how to deal with it later in the movie as well, but still keep in everything that show’s Jesse’s kindness, like him feeding the spider Todd was keeping and the scene with the beetle that always brings the Undertale quote “despite everything it’s still you” to mind. if nothing else I’d hope that it’d make people think about how nothing about Jesse’s life circumstances have changed in a way that actually will allow him to thrive, and feel upset about it because he continues to persist in being a caring person in a world that never wanted him to be.

NINJAGO HEADCANON TIME ‼️

I- am shamelessly on a Ninjago fixation again (I blame my irl friends- they’re not gonna see this anyway sooooooooo) yippe. Some of these headcanons are ones Ive see and whole heartedly agree with, and some are just random ones i’ve come up with throughout the years so uh yeah don’t mind that some have more then others haha. I’ll probably post smaller ones (and like a another one specifically for DR headcanons :DDDDD

Lloyd

• He/They and Panro Ace.

• None of the ninja are not queer and three(?) of them are ace to me (I am projecting.) Lloyd is ace, for I cannot see the words Lloyd and s3x working in the same sentence. In general just idea cannot be fathomed by me. If you do, cool! (We don’t shame headcanons around here!!)

• He is trans masc as well I love trans masc Lloyd headcanons.

• Getting this out the way. I am a s u c k e r for the oni dragon feature headcanons. 👏💳👏💳👏

• He has horns, starting on his forehead following the curve of his head, the horns aren’t to long and are pretty smooth, starting off as his skin color before transitioning into a black color with a green sheen.

• The horns are a mix of dragon shape with oni coloring.

• Lloyd has pointy ears and they do reflect his emotions.

• Like they’re sitting pointed high when he’s really happy, excited, nervous (?) and tend to droop when he’s sad or upset. Though they are typically in a neutral middle.

• Yes he has a tail but he does hide it when in public.

• Does have shape shifting! Just not to the extent of a full blood Oni, he could change into other people or animals but it’s much harder and required complete focus. So it’s better for him to take small characteristics or changes (like his face, hiding scars, etc), or to hide some Oni and Dragon features if he so wishes.

• He can purr, but is very embarrassed by it so other than around the ninja he tries his best to keep it down.

• Short compared to the ninja, like the second shortest, around 5’6”.

• Trust issues, kinda funky to new people like he’s not mean but he isn’t gonna be all buddy buddy and friendly (I blame Harumi & his childhood.)

• Especially after seasons 8-10, absolutely does not trust anybody besides his family.

• Absolutely did not like the new changes of horns and a tail, etc when they manifested. Dreaded it and himself at one point. Took a lot of care, and work, and love (and probably a lot of therapy) for him to feel comfortable again.

• There are days in which he still feels awful but he knows he can go straight over to the ninja when he starts feeling like that.

• Through he did not mind his fangs since he did have them since birth. When they started growing it was not an uncommon occurrence to find him staring into the bathroom mirror as he’d gently poke the tips of his fangs.

• There are some times, rare times, where you’ll still catch him doing it.

• His fangs are not as typically long as a regular onis, but longer that a normal humans canines.

• His nail are in a similar fashion, they grow pointy and a faster than the rest of the ninja, so he often has to file them down at least one or twice a week.(?)

• Even now has the biggest sweet tooth, when he was younger he’d steal some of Cole’s sweets but now they’ve been baking together for a while. He’s gotten pretty good

• Lloyd, like his father, both like shiny stuff or things with nice sounds. Think like dice! some are shiny while others just make the best sound when clunked together. Leads me to my next thing.

• HE HAS PIERCINGS, I firmly believe he had his ears pierced at least once, with like gold studs but will change them out to other gold esk earrings every so often.

• The rest of the ninja have bought them a set of earrings that match each ninja. Quartz studs from Zane. Like a vertical bar hoop earings from Cole, Kai went a little extra and got him a gold lobe to conch chained earring which a dangling piece of chain with a red jewel, Mismatch blue studs from Jay, and Raindrop earrings from Nya.

• He gets constantly reminded ans (lovingly) made fun of his Prime Empire avatar.

• The next few are gonna be angst and possibly a bit darker, so be warned when proceeding.

• Lloyd has had and still has a lot going on, mentally and emotionally.

• You’ve seen the amount of trauma and shit he’s been through.

• When he first found out about being the green ninja he was young, a kid, so he found it exciting imagining himself like that. He felt very important and wanted to do anything and everything to achieve that faster. Kids are oblivious like that. After getting hit with Tommorow’s Tea it finally dawned on him.

• Lloyd got what he wanted but being the Green Ninja was not the simple obstacle to overcome.

• The weight of the responsibility and power was to heavy at first. So he put himself through the training, every morning to night he trained. it got bad at one point because he’d rarely leave, even to eat.

• It was an issue that had an intervention for, he wasn’t allowed to train without someone knowing or supervising for awhile.

• He broke down during the intervention, because he wanted to be ready and to strong enough, etc. But he never did through out the training. That night was a movie night where Lloyd got to watch all his favorite moviess.

• He struggled with getting into better eating habits after awhile of the non-stop training. The others were always patient with him though.

• Lloyd felt he had a lot to uphold and maintain especially as words were used like “chosen one” and “destiny” to describe his role.

• After awhile he started having a harder time expressing his emotions, but the Ninja caught on quick enough and did help him reverse that thinking and process. Sometimes it’s still hard.

• There are times where Lloyd blanks out to his own thoughts and he struggles to come out of them.

• Has anxiety and has had anxiety and panic attacks more then once. Knows the routine on how to deal with them.

• The first time he had a panic attack he was alone and it scared him. But he was to afraid to tell anyone.

• Sensei Wu was the first to find out and talked to Lloyd about it, he got the rest of the team involved after getting a plan and everything set up to help Lloyd.

• Probably has (undiagnosed) ADHD, notable hyperfixations were Sharks, Space (due to a comic book series), The history of Ninjago/the Ninja, and his current Hyperfixation is Plants/botany.

• To lighten the mood, RGB SIBLINGS.

•I am a firm believer in them.

• Lloyd intended to make matching bracelets for him, Kai and Nya but while making them decided to do it for all the ninja so now they all have needed bracelets consisting of a green, light blue, blue, red, black, and white bead.

• They (Kai and Nya) were the first people he saw as family besides Sensei Wu. Then they adopted him very much was like “Yes, he is our little brother. Whatcha gonna do about it?”

• Lloyd started copying both of them because he really looked up to them. Took their sides in arguments but took Nya’s when it was an argument between the two of them.

• Lloyd often let Nya paint his nails and sometimes practice makeup on him.

• He also got roped up into most of Kai’s pranks, he loves it though.

• Rgb siblings have a very good relationship and they are the closest out of any sibling esk relationship Lloyd has with the Ninja.

Nya

• She/They and Bisexual (fem leaning)

• I see a lot of the Ninja as Bi in some aspect (again i’m projecting.)

• Genderqueer but def more feminine leaning.

• Nya and Jay keep their half of the Yin Yang medallion on themselves 99% of the time.

• Nya is in fact taller then jay and is only an inch taller then Lloyd standing at 5’7”.

• Nya and Cole are best friends.

• They work out together go on jogs and help spot each other, etc.

• NYA IS B U F F, Can easily pick up Jay and carry him around.

• Both cringe looking back at the “Cole is my perfect match” thing.

• Has a spice tolerance because of Kai but not at the same level as him.

• P.i.x.a.l. and Nya like to work on stuff together, just like they’ll ask for tiny bits of advice or suggestions. It’s best described as parallel play? but they’re doing very similar things but on their own.

• Can not cook for shit, has burnt food more times then she can count.

• Messy clean room, tbh this can go for all ninja except Kai weirdly enough, his room is by far the most organized out of them all, still can be messy but overall clean.

• Skates, known longboards, regular skateboards and skates, she and Lloyd do it a lot.

•Knows how to ride a motorbike and is very proud of it. That thing is like her child.

• Also post becoming one with the sea she’s grown wayyyy more interested in the ocean and relating topics like preservation, marine biology, how the ocean works and how land is made, etc.

• Side effect from becoming one with the sea is she constantly smells like sea salt

• She also has markings left over in swirly shapes, and her eyes glow a faint blue in the dark.

• Subconsciously understands (aquatic) animals like they make their noises and subconsciously Nya’s brain translates it.

• The monastery has since also been made to follow proper recycling procedures.

• Goes out to help with any kind of beach clean ups, sometimes will drag the rest of the team to help.

• Likes pretty much every and all kinda of music. You name is she’s listen to it. While working on her Samurai X suit she’s find random music to play.

• One of the three (Jay, Her, and Cole) coffee addicts of the monastery, the others either don’t drink coffee (P.i.x.a.l. and Zane), drink tea (Lloyd and Sensei Wu), or drink Redbull (Kai.)

• Feels like she needs to prove her worth 24/7. Especially in early seasons. But she’s learned that she’s loved no matter her worth and that she’s important to the team, but there are times she struggles.

• Back to Nya and Jay, I feel like they’d have date nights once a week.

• It takes a variety of forms, like movie dates, all day dates, or simply staying over in each others rooms to cuddle.

• Or stargazing dates or long rides on Nya’s motorbike.

• I feel they’re 100% comfortable and honest with each other even if they don’t want to. Especially in the later seasons.

• They’ve had a few breakdowns together, relatively no one knows bout this as they take extra care into keeping it private. Unless the other was genuinely concerned then they might get Sensei Wu involved but that is the farthest they’ll go.

• Double dates with Kai and Skylor.

• Nya has two victims when she wants to experiment with stuff. Jay and Lloyd, at this point they have become accustomed to it.

• Couple times the entire ninja crew fell for the skincare ‘dates’ now it’s a once a month thing.

• SHES A GOOD INVENTOR, There’s like 4 (Nya, Jay, Zane, and P.i.x.a.l.) of them now, so sometimes with bigger projects they’ll get together to help out.

• Jaya kiss each other a lot, from pecks, to showering each other in kisses, forehead, nose, butterfly, hand kisses. They’re adorable.

• THEY BOTH ARE SO TICKLISH TO THE POINT THEYLL GET ALL GIGGLY WHEN THEY GET PEPPERED IN KISSES.

• Sometimes while they’ll out they’ll spot a pretty person and point them out and giggle about it to each other.

• Wears claw clips and has noticed Jay keeps an extra one on his at all times.

• They absolutely dance and play in the rain.

• If one of them gets sick because of it they feel bad and will stick with them 100% through it even if they end up catching it.

• They are so silly I love them hehehe.

• Saw this short comic and now it’s my person headcannon Nya for the samurai x idea from Lloyd.

• Daddy’s girl.

Jay

• He/Him and Bisexual (fem leaning)

•Jay is trans, ftm. Another one where I really like the trans headcanon. <333

• Second person in the group to have ADHD. Though he’s known about it for longer and takes medication to help but also has his own routine to help incase he forgets to take his meds.

• When he was younger his main hyper fixation was inventing and now it’s just carried over into regular interests. There are times where it’ll seep back into his brain for a short while but it hasn’t been as big as it was when he was younger.

• Loved building things with his dad ‼️ was bonding moments for them. He still has some of the trinkets they’ve made together. They’re his prized possessions.

• Learned to sew from his mom, which was useful ashe took his stuffed bear, Mister Cuddlywomp, around with his everywhere and he’d either get dirty or ripped so Edna taught Jay to see so he could repair the stuffed bear whenever.

• Had a hyperfixation on video games, birds, and Dinosaurs. His current hyperfixation is back to inventing.

• Rambles a lot and everybody listens, especially Nya. Lloyd on the other hand jumps in and they end up rambling together for hours.

• He also collects stuff, Crow collecting random stuff Jay and Dragon loving shiny Lloyd. They show off their collections to each other atleast once a week.

• He has sensitive ears and can get overwhelmed easily by loud noises. So he caries a pair of headphones on him at all times.

• Lloyd and Jay are very close and definitely hang out a lot whether it’s a parallel play thing (like Nya and p.i.x.a.l.) or it’s talking about their hyperfixations, or their collections, etc.

• Oh yeah, he’s definitely the shortest ninja I wanna say around 5’4”-5’5”.

• Has lightning looking scars from his first few attempts at his power. Can be a bit subconscious about them but then remembers this one time a kid said he looked badass from the scars.

• Again I love him and Nyas relationship because they’re so comfortable with each other.

• He’s the little spoon and loves when Nya plays with his hair.

• Cuddler, enough said.

• Power has gone out multiple times because he’s been jumpscared. So now everybody’s agreed to just not scare him. He’s vulnerable to pranks, no body is.

• Which, Jay has started 2 prank war before, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it’s happened twice.

• Can’t skate, Nya has tried many times and all failed.

• I feel he definitely has some scaring especially because he’s always be scraped or have bandages on him as a kid.

• Rom com enthusiast ‼️

• Really wants to learn more about his biological parents, especially after that whole thing in Sky bound, I feel like it was just a one up thing and I would’ve loved to see him get to learn about them from Sensei Wu in canon. So after Skybound ended he begged Sensei Wu to tell him about his bio parents. He would’ve said yes and told him as much as he could remember.

• Nervous laughs when he feels awkward.

• Fidgets a lot with his fingers, or random items he has on hand.

• Bit of an artist, says he can’t draw, proceeds to make the most detailed and analyzed sketch of a invention he’s working on and says “I know it’s messy and I was a bit lazy with it sorry.”

• Likes to cloud gaze when he doesn’t have training. He finds it calming and satisfying to watch the clouds slowly pass by. Has almost fallen asleep out there.

• Jay sometimes feel likes he’s the useless member of the team, Kai is pretty useful with his knowledge of weapons, Zane could cook remarkably, Nya has made multiple vehicles and even a secret base as well as repair the bounty, Cole is a good baker and super strong (+ plus he has connections due to his fathers status) and pixel is an major knowledge source for them.

• He will sit in his room thinking about how he could become more useful, one time Nya found him like this and he spent the rest of the night crying to her. Apologizing for ever making her feel this way before.

• I feel they would’ve talk to each other about it more after Jay calmed down and how Nya felt during that time. It made them grow closer and understand each other better.

• Jay always makes sure to include everyone since then. No matter what’s going on.

• Has a stuffed animal collections and they hall have names and elaborate personalities and backstories. Many of them are friends with Lloyd’s stuffed animals.

• He’s a sweetheart overall, possibly writes poetry for Nya, or atleast has attempted it.

• Sharper cainines the left over from when he was a snake.

Kai

• He/They and Bisexual

• Kai is a demi-boy or bigender I can’t really decide because they both fit him.

• Kai has a mild hydrophobia, because he almost drowned as a kid. Nya helped pull him out and that was the first experience of her using her elemental powers whether she knew it or not.

• When his sister became the sea he’d stare out at the ocean, it was his two biggest fears combined but he still wanted to be near for Nya.

• He definitely had multiple breakdowns about and overall cried a lot. He was terrified.

• Redbull drinker, but will drink other energy drinks if there’s none in the house.

• Scared to lose his power do sometimes he’ll wake up suddenly and try to light his hand to make sure he still has it,

Cole

• He/Him and Gay.

• Cole is the only cis person out of the Ninja but he does feel fem from time to time so you can see him experimenting with his styles and tends to keep his hair longer.

• Very good baker! Experiments with different recipes and stuff. Lloyd likes to help with whatever he can however he can.

• The tallest of the ninja at 6’1”

• After reverting from being a ghost he had a hard time adjusting back to being human.

• He had to adjust to eating and drinking again. Zane often would help him but he would forget at times.

• Mild hydrophobia, forgets he can touch water again.

• Forgets he can’t become invisible or pass through stuff.

• Sometimes has phantom feelings of being a ghost still, no physical altercations occurred really.

• He can still see ghost though, freaks him out a bunch but he’s made a few ghost friends.

• Loves music and has a vinyl and cd collections. Cole is very proud of it.

• He eventually began to enjoy dancing, using it to train along with other various forms of martial arts.

• He’s the Dad of the group.

• When he is stressed he bakes late at night, he’s scared a few of his teammates when they came to get water or smth late at night.

• Can kinda like feel the group like tremors, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. Pretty useful and he often uses it when the city doesn’t pick up on stuff.

• He’s scared of being abandoned.

Zane

• He/They/It and Asexual

• I saw this once and I agree, they very obviously feel emotions, like love, heartbreak, happiness, sadness, hurt, etc. But I do not think when they were built their creators had them being sexually active in mind, I do not think they were built with any of those parts at all. And being asexual doesn’t mean you can’t love someone you absolutely can be attracted romantically to anyone just you don’t or barely feel sexual attraction. I’m stating this because of the fact they are Nindroids.

• Zane is nonbinary because i’m nonbinary and I say so.

• Zane and p.i.x.a.l. are dating but they aren’t the typically publicly affectionate kind, they’re obviously a couple but leave affectionate for private.

• Also the mom of the group.

• Most people are banned from using the kitchen except him and Cole. As well as kai if he has either of the two’s supervision.

• One of the more organized people, he’s more organized than Kai. Everything must be in place.

• He also follows recipes to a T. Not a simple mistake in his cooking.

• Can withstand the cold, he’s cold to the touch. Even if he is metal he’s colder than what it typically gets like.

• He’s like an info machine, they ask him lots of questions which can get very annoying at times. They don’t mean for it to be rude, they just want him to show off how much knowledge he holds.

• Second tallest of the ninja at 5’11”

• Let’s the team vent to him and help them find solutions or ways to help at all.

• Likes books but has only really read a few that he truely enjoyed.

Pixel

• Any pronouns and Asexual

• I saw this once and I agree, they very obviously feel emotions, like love, heartbreak, happiness, sadness, hurt, etc. But I do not think when they were built their creators had them being sexually active in mind, I do not think they were built with any of those parts at all. Sooo I wasn't planning on doing this post just yet and I don't have a good digital drawing of her yet, but

Ana!!

So my take on her is very different from how I think most people imagine her, I wanted to go in a different direction that made her more than just the girl one/ninten's girlfriend/nicher Paula and she's become one of my favorite characters to play around with ^^

Design details and a giant wall of text detailing her character and story below :3

So like the entirety of my interpretation of Ana stems from one thing

Very prominent eyebrows (Invasion From the Unknown actually mentions the same thing!!! the illustrations don't show it though and there's not really any other similarities between that version and mine), mouth usually spread in a frown, she's not a happy person Pink dress with a white collar and frill at the bottom, pink hat with a black band (or maybe cream with a red/pink band? i might play around with that idk), red shoes and white stockings She almost always wears her hat when she's out, having to leave it behind in Reindeer was very frustrating but she knew she'd get it back eventually at least (And yeah, she's fat. Her sprite doesn't look fat, I haven't seen other designs that make her fat, I didn't really take inspiration from her model because I hate it and it's not really fat either, I just wanted there to be a fat girl who's not, like, a mean-spirited joke, and since MOTHER's sprites are suuuper vague I decided to take advantage of it and design the characters however I wanted. thank god i'm on tumblr and not posting these to reddit or something, they'd crucify me)

Now her character!

Basically, Ana is grumpy and sour Constantly

You can contrast that with Ninten's 24/7 positivity

In general, I see the world of MOTHER 1 being very bleak and gloomy, with Ninten being the sole exception who helps bring light to the places and people whose souls are being crushed by the weight of everything Ana's sort of the final boss of repressed emotions and pessimism for Ninten to tackle (besides the actual final boss, who completely blows anyone else's emotional repression out of the water - I have a Giygas post in my drafts but I honestly have too much to say about him, I need to trim it down ><) It alllllll plays into the themes I wanna play with in my M1 interpretation :3

So Ana was a young girl living with her mother and father in Snowman's local chapel. Even before the Invasion she was pretty well-known for not being particularly upbeat. She was super reserved, pretty much never smiled, and preferred reading and praying to other people's company. She got some of it from her father, who was a priest and raised her to value proper behaviour and following God or whatever, but she's also just kinda like that. Her mother was much warmer, loving her daughter and never judging her for being less outgoing than the other kids, and Ana was always happiest curled up with her next to the fire, listening to a story.

Oh, and of course she's psychic, powerfully so. Bad news if you tick her off. Her family regards it as a miracle from God. She's a little clairvoyant, but not enough to know exactly what the future holds. Just short little confusing snippets and hints of what to do and expect.

One day, everything suddenly changed. The town was hit by an earthquake, everything was covered in darkness, the animals on the outskirts of town went berserk, and people went missing. The sounds and the shaking jolted Ana awake, and she ran down the hall hoping to be comforted by her mother. Opened the door, standing there with a candle, staring at the empty bed and a shattered window.

Ana buried her feelings and set out to try and find her mother (her father just stayed home and prayed, never leaving the chapel), but the monsters and creatures that had appeared were too strong for her alone, and she could only get as far as Reindeer before she had to turn back. But she heard a little voice in her head that told her to leave her hat behind, and she knew that whoever returned it to her would be the person she had to follow to rescue her mother. She waited impatiently back at her home, praying with her father, obsessively reading the news (similar disappearances all over the country, especially in Easter, interesting), and hoping that the hero, "Ninten," would show up soon.

Eventually, after FAR longer than she was happy with, he showed up and. Is this really the hero? This is just some bucktoothed kid and his geeky friend. She shoved down her frustrations along with everything else (at the very least she appreciated finally having her hat back) and told him that she needed to join him. He's happy to meet her of course because he's Ninten ("New friend!" "We are not friends.") And so the trio gets to set off on their journey!

In the completely wrong direction. Why are we stopping in Halloween.

For some reason, Ninten doesn't seem overly concerned about the fate of the world. He and his stupid friend just keep goofing off and hunting for these useless melodies. This isn't a scavenger hunt. The world is gonna be destroyed. She's furious, but she bottles it up. This is the person who's apparently fated to save Earth, so she has to stay with him, no matter how annoying he is or how much time he wastes.

So Ana spends the whole journey getting progressively more ticked off as they keep getting distracted by the hunt for the melodies. Ninten's shenanigans and his relentlessly positive attitude continue to get on her nerves, and she refuses to engage with them. This is a SERIOUS mission, and she's not gonna stoop to their foolish level, even if she has to stick with them.

So I'll be able to get more into the fight among the group when Teddy joins when I do his post, but short story is that Ana is against Lloyd staying. If they're actually gonna see this mission through to its end, someone strong like Teddy's gonna be far more useful, and they've wasted far too much time to let Lloyd slow them down. Her anger's really starting to boil over at this point. They've been together for ages, and they've barely gotten any closer to saving the world.

This all finally comes to a head on the Mountain (I love the Mountain, everything happens on the Mountain). Ninten's starting to lose his cool as the stress of their journey starts getting heavier and heavier, having to leave Lloyd was incredibly painful, and he's angry with her for not having their backs. She snaps that they aren't friends, they're just allies on the same mission, and they can't afford to waste time goofing off and making pals, and the fight gets more and more heated until everything Ana's been holding in finally bursts free.

She's terrified, and she's been terrified ever since her mother disappeared, and she doesn't know if they can really win or if she'll ever see her mother again, and having to just stay bottled up while they just wandered around seemingly not doing anything has been awful, and infuriating, and she can't stop herself from crying anymore.

Ninten quiets down and lets her have what she needs for a few minutes before he tries to comfort her. He didn't realize she was keeping all this inside, and he feels horrible that she was dealing with this the entire time. Once her tears die down, he rests his hand on her and assures her that they're gonna save her mother, and everyone else, too. He doesn't know how, and he's terrified sometimes too, but he also knows that for whatever reason, they need the melodies if they want to win. He apologizes for just ignoring all her feelings for the entire journey, and tells her that even though she's been so firm about not liking them, he doesn't want her to be alone. She can tell him anything, she doesn't need to keep everything to herself. That's what being friends is about, right?

So this is huge for both of them, and it's when Ana finally starts to warm up. She finally sees that it's good to be open and have friends, and that they'll be stronger for it if they're close. And, as they climb further up the Mountain and continue being friends, she starts to realize some muuuuch more uncomfortable feelings, too. Of course she pushes them down at first, but when they reach the cabin, they're alone together, and who knows if she'll have another chance to open up like this, she comes out and asks Ninten to dance.

I flip-flop a lot on whether Ninten actually feels mutually about her (you can choose yes or no when she asks if you like her back, I don't think Ninten's really ready to figure that stuff out for himself), but goddd I love this scene so much, for such a simple, clunky game, its tender moments hit so hard ;-;

So by the end of the story, Ana's reunited with her mother, she finally has friends that she loves and cares about, she's discovered new things about herself, and she's developed a new sense of hope and brightness for the future. A happy ending :)

So that's my version of Ana, I think she's very different from every other version I've seen of her so it's not like I'll ever see content for her that'll really speak to me unfortunately, but I love her and I love thinking about her dynamic with the other characters ^^

Also sorry for the wait and more because is really short, this is based on my own experiences of being sick, and I vave just been really sick like 2 or 3 times

It was a really bad day, you were glued to the bed due to a cold, you swear it wasn’t a big deal, but the thermometer says otherwise, you have been sick for a few days now, getting better, yes, but feeling like shit either way. You decided to check your social media to kill boredom before it killed you. A notification popped up while you were looking at some posts

Leo: How ya doin?

You: Still sick  :(

You: WHY U LAUGHING??

You put your phone aside for a moment, closing your eyes thinking that a little nap while waiting for Leo wouldn’t be bad. Before you could fully relax a sudden noise make you jump, sitting in your bed due to the panic, a green figure was standing in the door, dressing all black with what looked like a science book with a cross draw with sharpie in the cover in his right hand and a plastic bag in the other, it was Leo, who decide opening your bedroom door in the normal way just wasn’t for him and instead almost destroyed it.  You quickly change from a scared expression to an annoyed one, your forgot that this turtle can teleport

“Today we are here to say farewell to our beloved y/n, who was a- ugh" The red-eared slider couldn’t finish his speech when a pillow land on his face

“...Get the hell out of my house” Just as you said that, you turned your back, pulling the blanket over your face you were happy in the turtle presence, that’s just how your dynamic was

Leo then made an outrageous expression, putting his hand against his plastron and gasping so loud and dramatically that you wouldn’t be surprised if the neighbor had heard him “first of all, rude. Second of all”  he throw the book somewhere in your room while he walked up to your bed “I was gonna give you something but since little y/n here doesn't like ky presence, I would keep it” he make the plastic bag sound

You uncover your face to see “what is it?” you said as you sat on your bed, he gives you the bag and you looked inside

“I assumed that you haven’t eat yet, so I bring you some treats” He was right, you haven’t eat all day, not because you weren’t hungry but because you couldn’t bring yourself to get up the bed and make something

"Thanks, Leon”, you thanked him while looking a little closer to the plastic bag content, inside there were a few of your favorite snacks along with some drinks, you take a water bottle, it was starting to feel like you were dying from dehydration, cold water was just what you needed at the moment

“How's your fever?” The turtle touched your forehead trying to take your temperature 

“mmh…it did get a little better yesterday, but I think it got worse today” You sounded resigned, you took a big sip from the drink, leaving almost half in the bottle

“There’s ice cream there too” Leo took the bag from your hands, pulling an ice cream cup that was at the bottom, your favorite of course “We should really try to lower your temperature, or else I'll have to plan your funeral for real” both laughed at the comment

“Please throw the bouquet at the end, I wanna see who’s next” your laughs got increased, but you had to stop after starting coughing, making your head hurt

Leo looked worried "Don't you have some pills or something that you can take?"

It did takes you a few second and a deep breath to talk "I think there's some paracetamol in the bathroom's mirror"

"I'll go get them, don't die"

"I'll try" you felt like the world was spinning, being sick was the worst, you heard Leo making sound in the bathroom, you weren't a quiet person and small noises weren't a problem for you, but now just the sound of the cabinet makes your ears hurts

Leo once again enter the room, in a more normal way now "here found them" he was speaking in his usual tone, but for some reason you feel it so loud

You grumbled as you take the pills and put them in your mouth, the taste of pills wasn't really your favorite, so you take a big sip of water before you could feel the bitter in your tongue

Leo looked worried for a moment “Sleep a little, you have to rest” Leo’s voice sounded softer, making you think of a purring cat. He took the things from your hands leaving them on the nightstand next to your bed so you could get a little more comfortable

“Thanks Lee, love ya” You made a heart with your hands, smiling softly

“me too, y/n” He mirrored your gesture, smiling at you while leaving the room, closing the door behind him.

You woke up, you didn’t know how long you slept, the sky in your window began to darken, you felt better, your headache almost gone. You sat to try and find your phone and check the time, but by doing so a wet towel fell on your lap, it seems that it was placed on your forehead, you took it, trying to figure out how it get there. Your head didn't hurt anymore, and your body felt a little more cooler

While you were thinking, the door opened up, it was Leo once again.

The mutant turtle had a tray with a bowl of soup in his hands, noticing you were awake, he smiled at you “I was just gonna wake you up, do you feel better?”

You nodded “What’s that?” you pointed to the bowl of soup

“Soup”

“Where did ya get that?”

“I made it myself for you” the turtle made an arrogance expression, he was proud of himself

“You know how to cook?” Your face was full of disbelief

“...I’m not gonna take care of you never again” You couldn’t help but chuckled at the answer while he pretend to tleave just to walked towards you immediately “Eat it, I have to go already, it’s getting late and I don’t want your parents to find me”

“oh…”You sounded a little bit too disapointed

“I can stay if you beg me” Leo smiled mockingly

“No, thanks.” your response was curt, once again making you both laugh “Message me when you get home and…if it’s okay…could you take care of me tomorrow again?”

Random Three Houses & Hopes Trivia: How Edelgard & Dimitri's relationship is shockingly far more convoluted than you would think.

...And arguably how it's also kinda contrived, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

A few weeks ago, I had a realization about something surrounding Edelgard's past which lowkey explains her whole dynamic with Dimitri a ton better than the generally accepted theory that the experiments "those who slither in the dark" did to Edelgard affected her memory (not saying it isn't a factor, mind you). After sharing my thoughts with the Three Houses subreddit, people pointed I either got some facts wrong or was missing some key details, so I went back and did a more thorough research on the whole topic again. And once getting a full picture of the whole situation, I feel it was worth making this post.

To explain what I mean by claiming that Edelgard & Dimitri's relationship is shockingly complicated, we first need to go over everything both Three Houses and its Warriors spinoff tells us about their shared past and experiences:

1. Edelgard in the Goddess Tower scene says her first love was a noble from the kingdom a lifetime ago.

2. In the Blue Lions event "Childhood Memories", Dimitri says the following about his past with Edelgard:

Dimitri: We were born and raised in different territories, without ever knowing the other even existed. Yet, against all odds, for just over a year, we became childhood friends. [...] Unaware of each other's stations or backgrounds, we met and became incredibly close. This was when she and Lord Arundel were living in the Kingdom.

Incidentally, Dimitri also says this in his A-Support with Hapi:

Dimitri: As [Anselma/Patricia] was seeking asylum from the Empire in the Kingdom, Lord Arundel was obligated to hide the Imperial princess's whereabouts. She would undoubtedly have become a political pawn in the Kingdom as well. If her location had gone public, the Empire would have demanded her return. [...] I did not realize until much later that the girl I'd met under such strange circumstances was my stepsister.

3. In the AM event "Questions and Answers", Edelgard is noticeably shocked when Dimitri gives her the dagger back, which brings back the memories of when it was gifted to her. Besides realizing Dimitri was that kid, she also calls him once afterwards "My dear, forgotten friend...".

Oh, and Dimitri also calls her "El" a few times, which is important.

4. In Three Hopes, in one of Edelgard's Expedition lines, she recalls the following about how she got her dagger:

Edelgard: Have I told you about the boy who gave me the dagger? I called him "Dee," which is all I really remember about him.

5. In Edelgard's A-Support with Byleth, she mentions near the end how "there's no one left who calls me El..."

6. In Cindered Shadows, this exchange happens the second time you get to explore during the side-story:

Dimitri: Pardon the odd question, but something has been bothering me for a while now. Your hair...was it always that color?

Edelgard: That is an odd question. But yes, if you must know, it was a different color when I was a child. How could you know that? Is it possible that we met before the academy?

7. And finally, in Three Houses itself, not only any mentions of Edelgard calling Dimitri by name in flashbacks were removed with the last update in the English script, checking the OG Japanese one with Fedatamine.com reveals Edelgard never outright called Dimitri by name in those flashbacks, meaning the changes made to the EN script post-launch were likely done for consistency's sake (as in, the localization took some liberties with the Edelgard and Dimitri flashbacks, the devs likely noticed them, and ordered the translation team to remain faithful to the OG script).

In short, the "tl;dr" version of the whole Edelgard & Dimitri dynamic, in both Three Houses and Three Hopes, is that:

Dimitri recalls all of his past time with Edelgard back when they were kids. He remembers growing close enough to Edie to call her "El", but admits that neither Edelgard nor him knew who the other really was by then. Dimitri also states he eventually put two-and-two-together long after Edelgard had left the kingdom.

Edelgard meanwhile, remembers meeting a boy in the Kingdom whom she once had a crush on. She called him "Dee", recalls receiving her dagger from him and... That's pretty much it.

What exactly does this all mean then?

It means that, not only Edelgard does not remember her past with Dimitri the same way he does (jury's out as for why that's the case), her & Dimitri's recollections of events makes abundantly clear that, for most of Three Houses, Edelgard is 100% unaware that Dimitri and "Dee" (as in, the boy she befriended in the kingdom) are one and the same.

As always, many thanks to everyone who read this post! Looking back at it, I'm lowkey mad that I figured this out so damn late into the game's lifespan given all the evidence pointing it had been staring at my face all along.

Oh no I hate Fan too. Fan was not a good character in season 2 and he didn't actually face any consequences for his actions. Paintbrush was like the closest we got to Fan being criticised and people considered PB to be the one overreacting. Paintbrush is done so dirty because the fandom put their own belief about the bright lights being family even though Paintbrush never actually got along with them. They talked to tt like once, bickered with lb until the last ep they were in and then there's. Fan..

Also I think I hate fantube a little more after the theyrebasicallycanon polls put enstars against ii. Glad rinniki won they deserve the win against fantube imo.

Paintbrush was in every way in the right to yell at fan, he constantly bothered and nagged at them and the stuff about marshmallow was definitely the final straw

i only ever liked the whole bright lights family thing because honestly it could’ve worked imo!!! but they just never took that chance they never really developed the brights lights AT ALL most season (beside from marshmallow) the bright light felt more like the comical team (not really but can’t think of a better way to describe them) compared to the grand slams who definitely got way more focus and development

it’s shitty because i think the brights lights could’ve had potential but they were just casted aside until the last few episodes where “oh hey look development!! :] oh wait nvm they’re eliminated now <3” like ????

paintbrush definitely got the short end of the stick here. literally having what was supposed to be their episode mainly centred around tt and lb and having their feelings about marsh being completely casted aside. i wish more was done w/ marshmallow and them vs them and lb

looking back a lot of their scenes w lb just felt kinda off??? i don’t think can articulate this probably rn but paintbrush deserved better

but at the same time i wish the team got more time w/ each other in general, they have so many great opportunities to do it like in the maze episodes but again they’re kinda just cast aside as just comedy

and w/ s3 oh boy i hate what they did with paintbrush and their “arc” in the last few episodes. they quite literally and figuratively took away their edges, i miss sassy, sarcastic confident paintbrush they feel so dulled down in iii and it’s like no one in the writing team understands them at all. it’s like they didn’t even write s2 (but hey back to the point i mentions last post that show writers really ought to stop listening to fans sometimes because this is how fanon seeps in </3)

i hate how the a lot of the fans view paintbrush especially if it’s only ever in the context of lightbrush or shipping (another thing that pisses me off btw is how they’re always treated as irrational and or just plain out abusive FUCK PEOPLE WHO PORTRAY PAINTBRUSH LIKE THIS)

they’re such a great character who gets absolutely fucked over by the writing and fandom (not all of the fandom of course, i love seeing ppls takes and discussions on them but it’s just some fans who just </3)

i don’t like discouraging ships, if ppl are mature and respectful and don’t put other ppl down then that’s all great and stuff but my problem is that i really wish paintbrush was just seen as more than their ships yknow

Warning: bash being a jerk, protective randy (not possessive, there is a big difference) and jealousy, a bit of teasing? Very ooc Randy. Other than these warnings, please enjoy!

You weren’t a talkative kid, you weren’t shy or anything but you just kept to yourself more not really feeling like you had to share anything about yourself to anybody.

You had friends just not a big group, basically talking to Howard and randy everyday, you were going about your day just listening to your music as you head to your locker to gather the books you needed for your next class. It was only 9:05 and class started at 9:20 so you had plenty of time before class, That’s when you heard a BANG! Next to your locker; knowing the presence beside you the voice started to speak before you “Hey y/n! My old man gave me some money for some restaurant and I decided to go ask you because… eh? What was I gonna say?” “Gave you? You most likely stole the money knowing you. Plus I have plans tonight so no thanks Bash” you said back to him hoping he would just go and leave you on and about your day.

“What’s the plans? Can I join? Don’t tell me your gonna hang out with those nerds again they always honkin hang out at that stupid game place!” He exclaimed “it’s called the gamehole for your info, plus I like hanging out with Randy and Howard they never failed to entertain me even if we do the same thing over and over again” which you weren’t wrong, they did give you joy even if they did stupid things. But hey? Play stupid games win stupid prizes!

You closed your locker and tried to walk away from the conversation, which failed due to you being cornered by Bash and his crew “What does it matter Y/n? Those nerds barely have enough money to buy a combo of Charlie cluckers! I can buy you anything you want!” “Anything but happiness” you snarkly replied back to the boy. “Hey!” He yelled attempting to grab your wrist, suddenly you hear footsteps coming behind you and the sudden feeling of a warm hand gently grabbing you by your shoulders and pulling you to their body, making you put your head on their chest and felt arms wrap around you protectively, you recognize the scent of Randy.

“Don’t you have anything better to do Bash?” Randy asked Bash “Well I was asking Y/n out but you interrupted me! Now I’m gonna punch you!” He raised his fist as his friends held Randy still “Bashy no!” A woman’s voice screamed out, realizing it’s Marci; bash’s mother we freeze never wanting to see that woman on a bad mood.

“Ma! What are you doing here?! I was gonna punch this kid for stealing my girl!” “Your girl?! ‘Your girl’ my a-“ you got cut off from randy holding your mouth shut not wanting to make the situation worse, “Punch? Bashford Mcfist we are talking about this in the car to your dentist!” The angry woman exclaimed as she dragged Bash by the ear to the car giving a sorry glance to you and your Randy as she walked away.

“Well that was eventful you ok Y/n?” The tall purple haired boy asked only realizing your position that moment you started to stutter and blush heavily “y.yeah? Wha.what about y.you?” You asked back trying to get out of the position your in so you could scurry to class to hide your red face “you sure? You seem kinda red there love” WHAT WAS HAPPENING WHAT IS THIS SUDDEN CHANGE HE NEVER ACTED LIKE THIS TO YOU BEFORE! “Wh.why are you acting like this r.Randy?” “Well I like you, like I really like you more than a friend.. and it’s ok if you don’t like me you probably like somebody else anyways it was dumb for me to even try-“ that’s when you break out of his arms and pull him in for a kiss, not a long one but a short sweet one that only lasted for a few seconds.

“That should show you I like you too dummy… I don’t and will never like anybody else but you, I love you too Randy” you were quick to say before the bell rang alerting you to head to class “we’ll talk after class. Cafeteria?” “Y.yea sure..” “ok, love you!” You quickly pecked him on the cheek and ran off smiling leaving the flustered boy behind smiling and drooling over you.

Howard was waiting in class for his best friend to arrive, soon enough he arrived tired, late, and flustered. Randy was slowly creeping to his seat successfully not getting caught “soo how’d it go?” Howard asked curious because he was the first to point out when bash was talking to you “absolutely fantastic..~” the lovesick boy spat out while still thinking about the kisses, stuck in a daze.

if you don’t mind me asking how do you know you and melody are soulmates? through tarot?

Before I was close to her, I actually got a personality reading that was interrupted. The reader said there was someone in my life (and described melody exactly lol) that I would become closer to and that it would be extremely healing for both of us. I don’t wanna go into detail about exactly what it said, but it was basically like “the most perfect smartest and most caring friend you could ever ask for is right in front of you and don’t even worry about trying to make her like you or putting in too much effort because it will happen naturally.” At the time, I honestly didn’t see it happening and kind of brushed it off (especially since I was new to tarot and everything at the time) and I never told her about that part of the reading. But before I knew it, we were talking every day for multiple hours a day and pretty much shutting everyone else out 😅 When we couldn’t see each other we were texting or on the phone. We didn’t even notice how co-dependant we became either and I didn’t even notice how TRUE the reading was because it happened so slowly? I didn’t fight it but I didn’t really go for it either. I just wanted to talk to her about anything and everything all the time and she felt the same 😭 which was also pretty weird because neither of us were ever like that before hand - ESPECIALLY not her. There’s this song lyric we always say “that’s us!” every time we hear it. It’s “you’re cold and I burn, I guess I never learn” because she’s usually pretty cold (while I’m warm) but she can’t help but be warm towards me 💁🏽‍♀️💋 I always wish I could connect with that reader again and tell her how accurate the reading was and how right she was about the connection changing both of our lives.

Anyway, since then, we’ve gotten a few compatibility and dynamic readings and even have pulled cards for ourselves and it’s pretty much always said or implied that the connection is divine, meant to be and lifelong. Forever friends for sure. One reader even told us that there are two paths our friendship can take due to us being so different, but not to worry because both are so overwhelmingly positive. But besides that, I think even if we weren’t so spiritual we would just know. We’ve talked about it a lot and both agree that this is something we’ve never felt before with anyone. A connection we never even imagined or thought of being possible. Sometimes, we even watch shows or movies or even see peoples actual relationships (celebrities and real people)(soz😬) or even posts on twitter people make about their relationships or relationship goals and think “umm… why are we closer than them?” “NO SHADE, but how are they married but we’re closer and love each other more” “they begging for their friend or partner to do this but we already move that way 🤭🫣” we don’t even mean to be mean or douchey about it, but it’s a connection that we can’t help but feel arrogant about. I don’t think I’ve ever been more confident in anything or loved anyone more. Mutual obsession is super fun honestly. I know she’ll always have my back and I’ll always have hers and we never run out of things to talk about. Never run out of gifts to give. Never run out of nice words to say to each other. And it’ll never feel the same with anyone else 🥺💗 Platonically in love to be honest.

Sorry this was so long winded, as you can see I really am obsessed with her 😣 but the short answer is yes! But we would have known regardless lol

some of my opinions about Graduation Day (spoilers, obviously)

I was going to post this earlier but alas I forgot

It was meh.

Art style.

It never grew on me. It felt like a colored manga. A very strangely colored manga. I list this as the first thing because style is very different depending on the person. I just didn't like that art.

The characters.

Jaime didn't really feel like Jaime.

When you put stress on someone, they do act different, but we have seen how Jaime reacts to stress in the original comic. He doesn't isolate himself. He reaches out to his father, his friends. Or they reach out to him. That's what's so different about Jaime's story- he doesn't have to go through this alone. But this time they shut him out, they don't listen to him, they toss him into another city. Paco and Brenda weren't his friends, they were side characters. We hardly see Bianca and Alberto and Milagro.

And are you going to sit there and tell me that after Jaime missing for a year in the past, his family immediately after graduation dump him on his aunts?

Bianca would have never done that. Alberto would've never done that. I guess Milagro would be happy because she gets his room now but that's beside the point.

The few characters that were introduced weren't dynamic at all. They were sloppily written. Fadeaway is a jerk. The two new scarabs are two-dimensional. They all had so much potential, but it was flushed like crap. Victoria and Ted were probably the best written, but they aren't the focus of the story.

The storyline.

There are so many things you could do to simplify it, or some parts you could take out. The one that bothers me the most is the sudden change that Dynastes has to trust Jaime. The story structure needs her to trust Jaime, but it was very fast. One second she's trying to kill him the next she's protecting him.

(What I'm trying to say, is the writer in me is screaming that when Jaime sacrificed himself for Dynastes should've been her turing point.)

Also, who is Jaime going to face in the next run? The Reach again? What's going to make it different this time?

The origin of Jaime is very jumbled. Are we sticking to the original comic? Rebirth? Batman the Brave and the Bold? Young Justice? Some strange combination of all of them? Ted is alive, so how does that fit into Jaime's origin? It was a strange place to take off at.

The dialogue.

The dialogue in here was horrible.

The amount of unfunny jokes and strange one-liners, like the green beetle calling herself a goth girl, is something that should not be officially published. I guarantee no goth girl has called herself a goth girl like this.

The Horizon.

I had really high expectations for the Horizon. They were something I never really thought about, something that could so easily be tied into all other Blue Beetle stories. They were the original enemies of the Reach, the people that stood up to them long before anyone else did.

They're a bunch of scared piss-ons?

I guess I already had a clear image of what I wanted them to be. I was expecting warrior scarbs, and I got an old Reach dude. Where are the other scarabs? Why are you so scared of the Reach, but not have a protector on board?

Few things I liked:

• the horizon.

• character designs

• potential of more scarabs

• time management

I feel like the writers only skimmed the original. Or maybe read it once a long time ago. Also the random fan service didn't fit? Didn't come here to see Jaime extremely caked up.

It was short, so they couldn't do much of anything. But it should've been a solid six issues.

(Kinda thinking about rewriting it, like making a fanfiction?? That's how much all of these are bothering me.)

Mix 18 – Ugetsu’s grand return 🥳

Ohh sorry so much I was meaning to write about this chapter since awhile, but my job was demanding lately and I also got new obsession to over-think *cough* BSD Stormbringer *cough* But here I am finally getting time to gush about Ugetsu and Mafuyu xD

(btw i had fun with creating new pfp with this picrew)

This post will be more Ugetsu-centric – I will focus on Mafuyu later on together with covering mix 19 – though maybe after full scans will be available since judging from spoilers it relies a lot on visuals. But in short, it is so beautiful chapter with Mafuyu’s arc blooming 💖

As for now - what can i say -  mix 18 is simply perfection. Feel prepared to me simply counting up things I loved xD

Honestly I love everything about it  – finally getting Ugetsu’s return in such amazing way, the way Mafuyu was portrayed in such human and vulnerable way and character development of them both. Besides, interaction between them were pure gold xD I liked how funny was clash between their personalities, which balanced more serious and angsty side of this chapter.

I really like how Given is consistent with themes and parallels between all characters, especially Akigetsu and Mafuyama in this one. It feels very thoughtful how Natsuki-sensei planned all of it.

Okay, so let’s start digging~~

If you read my analysis of Ugetsu’s booklet from movie  - you know that I was concerned with how he was shown so alone and isolated from outside world; with no human interaction except that text from Akihiko.

Honestly I literally gasped when he admitted that by himself in this chapter xD

Really wow – such development considering that he started as character ‘i-have-no-friends’ and neglecting himself in lot of ways. He went long way T_T

I really liked his vibe in this chapter – it really feels that he thought over his life and changed. Even without clear destination – it feels symbolic that he no longer wants to live in temporary hotels and wants to sell his old house ( which was symbol of his cocoon) – like butterfly he is now free to live fully and make connection with outside world.

So proud of Ugetsu~~

I am really curious if we will got more spinoff or something about Ugetsu – it really feels like some part of his life ended, but new possibilities are ahead – I really love how carefree he ponders on his future. Also since Natsuki-sensei mentioned on her twt that she made changes to booklet story to include improved version to Given vol.8 – I still think she likes Ugetsu quite a lot xD

Okay, let’s move on Mafuyu-Ugetsu bond ~~

I love their dynamics so much – in this chapter it was really perfect way how to show kinda mentor-student relationship should work (and without mentor dying per trope *sighs in bsd*).

I loved how Mafuyu opened to Ugetsu about he is going through – because of he knew what’s Ugetsu been through and how they are alike, these factors helped him to admit his deepest worries and insecurities. Though this arc Mafuyu talked to others, but it was the heartfelt connection between MafuUge that let him to be more at ease speaking himself. Like Ugetsu being comfort friend for him like no other.

I love Mafuyu reaction to Ugetsu’s spontaneous decision to go together to SYH live :D

They are just perfect xDD

On more serious side, I really liked hands symbolism in this – at first Mafuyu is uncomfortable with this decision like feeling desperate that Ugetsu didn’t understand him and grasping him to wait, not wanting to go and confront Uenoyama.

But then after they talk more – Ugetsu’s points get through to Mafuyu. I also loved how Ugetsu knew what to say and  how help Mafuyu. Like literally he said what Mafuyu needed to hear – both calling out on lack of communication with Uenoyama, making good points on indecisiveness having painful consequences, and praising him for trying his best.

It is great too that Ugetsu didn’t handed full solution for Mafuyu – ‘only’ provided support and good insights and ultimately gave Mafuyu push in right direction, which is taking him by hand to SYH debut (meanwhile Mafuyu ceasing to resist).

What’s more, it is really good that they got separated in the crowd – Mafuyu has to alone make decision for his own future and this is giving him that free space. After all, from story perspective mentor is supposed only to show protagonist way of living and giving advice like fundament -  and protag must have built on that by himself and go beyond.

Besides, I really love that callback to chapter 27 – on one side we have that emotional scene with Ugetsu/Mafuyu crying due to being terrified of what comes with future, and to balance that we have frame with comforting ‘all will be okay’ providing support to one another.

Excuse me now to cry in the corner a bit T_T

Ngl Ugetsu looking melancholic when Mafuyu brought up his story with Akihiko also made my Akigetsu heart weep a bit too T_T

Finally - to end on positive note,

mentor-student dynamics is often show that student could achieve at what mentor didn’t succeed -  that’s why imo (contrary to Akigetsu as these ships were paralleled in this chapter) Mafuyama will get their happy ending with most likely pursuing music as career. And since story established that Mafuyu and Ugetsu and inspiring and helping each other -  I hope one day we will get Ugetsu happy ending as well – by that I mean him being renowned violinist while having friends and/or loving husbando xD

Just finished Yakuza 3 so here's some of my thoughts:

BEAUTIFUL EYES

Richardson and Kiryu talking at each other in different languages was so funny to me. Like they don't understand each other yet stubbornly keep talking as if they did XD

RIKIYA DYING WAS SO UNNECESSARY FOR THE PLOT WHYY like Kiryu has GOT to get rid of his stupid habit of leaving defeated enemies to their devices around various lethal objects (especially guns). Because they always, ALWAYS get back up. I'm not saying he should kill them. But like secure them in SOME way. Start carrying around some rope or something. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried.

Damn, Mine, babygirl, you are so beyond fucked up you need therapy BAD

Poor Daigo like imagine getting shot, being in a coma and you wake up on a rooftop in fucking december, toes freezing off, falling off of a hospital bed and immediately being greeted with the sight of several gun wielding assholes. You shoot them, still confused about what's going on (why tf is your father-figure of sorts there? Why is the dude u wished was ir boyfriend there? WHY ARE THEY SHIRTLESS AND BLOODY). Then ur crush starts spouting cryptic shit, the dude you shot somehow still has fight in him and to save you, your crush charges at him, getting shot multiple times and then tells you that he doesnt deserve to live before throwing himself off the roof. You've been awake for three minutes.

Also Haruka slapping Mine was EPIC. She should have kept going, kicked Mine in the shin, bitten his arm etc all feral foaming-at-the-mouth chihuahua mode

Also Mine feeling good about himself for having slapped a teen back. A grown ass adult. Like damn dude has issues

I'm stilk very upset about Rikiya. Like one moment I would run away from him in the Kamurocho streets and giggle with a warm feeling in my chest when he'd scream "ANIKII!!" and then the next he fell victim to this stupid gimmick of defeated opponents not being taken care of properly

I honestly feel like that gimmick is so overdone at this point

I think I did something wrong during the final boss battle because Mine was constantly going into this Jojo's bizarre adventure pose and regenerating health AND I had to do like the exact same QTE cutscene like four times even though I never failed it (besides the first time)

RIGHT I ALMOST FORGOT my steam screenshot folder is prob like 90% just various Majima facial expressions because I enjoyed them so much. Reminds me of that post going like "while older character models are kinda eh Majima's crowfeet in them slap!" and I really agree. I'm playing the games chronologically and when I got to YK2 something about Majima just looked extremely off but I couldn't put my finger on it. I think that's it tho they ironed him out and took away his wrinkles :(. Like obvs the model is still good it was just a weird change that I'm not sure why they implemented it. Anyway the Y3 Majima expressions are fucking precious especially the grins

Also pink truck scene probably best scene in the game it was so cute the way Majima was worried that he accidentally ran over Kiryu <3

I took way too long to finish this game because the old graphics are kind of jarring especially considering I played Judgement and Lost Judgement at the same time, but it was still a pretty good game. (another contributing factor was that for some reason the game doesn't allow me to do anything else on my PC besides access the taskbar while I'm playing it so taking short breaks is harder. The game literally does not allow for any apps to show up on screen) I'd really like a YK3 I think that would be epic especially to get an updated Rikiya model (I think there's an updated Mine model in Ishin? Idk anyway just more modern graphics would be really cool)

I can continue with Y4 now, which I'm really excited for because I've hears quite a bit of stuff about Akiyama and Saejima and this will be like the first proper contact with them and their storylines. I've actually started Y4 already and Akiyama has major cat energy to me

I don't wanna be rude or anything, but can I just take a moment to... talk about the costume and makeup department for the show? I mean, Hiddles is a cutie no matter the situation or setting, but there's just something about the makeup that makes them look... Idk, older? I know he's not as young as he was in 2011 or in 2012, but for some reason his forehead seems weirdly wrinkled? I mean, I've seen recent pictures of him, and while Hiddles does have a few wrinkles it almost seemed exaggerated in the show? There's also the matter of the hair which... maybe their trying to go for an Agent of Asgard look? But coming off of 2012 it just looks way too short and way too curly. Straight up looks like George Washington hair in some shots. I honestly don't care for Sylvie at all, but the least you can do is dye her hair black? That or make it clear whether or not that she's an Amora variant, but that's besides the point I'm getting at.

Moving onto the costume department... it feels sorta like a mixed bag for me. I actually kinda like Sylvie's outfit? Didn't care for the black cloak in the beginning, could maybe use a green cape, but overall it doesn't totally compliment the actress nor the makeup. The TVA makes sense with their outfits? I won't complain about them, though it would've been cool if Ravona and Mobius got outfit changes towards the end to signify the changes they'd put in since the start. Loki, above all, is the worst offender imho. The business attire was okay for maybe one or two episodes, but after that it just became gross, and weirdly fitting. I've seen concept art that originally showed Loki wearing an outfit similar to what Sylvie wore which I feel would've been perfect... But it got scrapped. And the other Loki's? I liked classic Loki well enough, but I was honestly too distracted by the fact that he and all the other Variants looked like they were wearing things from Spirit Halloween. Okay, don't give Classic Loki a muscle suit, that makes sense, but don't make it look like the costume department had a budget of 10$ and a rusty penny, my god.

As far as Kang goes... I'm not even gonna make a comment regarding them. I hate the character so much for how passive aggressive/arrogant/incel-like they are I don't even have words to describe how much I hate them. It's the same deal with Thanos, their ideas are completely nonsensical and the smug arrogance makes me want to gouge their eyes out with my thumbs. Thanos at least had power to back up his bluster, but Kang? He's just a tiny incel fuckboy who relies too heavily on his tempad and is completely powerless when it ceases to function. I hate Sylvie with a passion, but if I was in her shoes Kang would not have gone out as quick as he did, nor as pretty.

... that's my 2¢, anyway. Take of it as you will. I'd honestly better stop before I get too pissed off, I've been having an alright day this far.

and as the very recent press photos of tom at the essex serpent premieres demonstrate, he still looks fucking gorgeous and vibrant and youthful. what they did to him in the series was nothing less than character assassination in every sense of the word.

as a photographer with an obsession for continuity and detail, stuff like that has really bothered me. it makes the whole thing reek of "IDGAF" and LOKI deserved better.

also classicLOKI should have got his muscle suit; richard was so crestfallen over that. who would it have hurt? but they wanted to mock and belittle everyone called LOKI. make them seem foolish, useless, stupid, irrelevant, untrustworthy, weak, cruel.

Thank you, as I feel like so many folks kinda overlook/don't care about the child version backstory WoL writing the times I've done them, and it was meant to be cute but also a bit angsty. 💟

While I expected to get a few standard nice comments from mutuals/friends out of perfunctory response to writing I post, I didn't really expect much interaction with the story itself from most folks. It's not got a wide interest in fandom spaces, where NPCs and spice get the most views and interactions; who wants to read gen kid fic?

(Besides me and my genfic loving, formally studied Kid/YA Lit in uni self)

I got a few comments on the cute aspects, like 5 year old Aeryn, and at least one about the inherent tragedy of looking back and seeing how close the siblings were, what they meant to one another, and what it's meant for Aeryn to have lost him.

So about what I expected, really.

As far as process, it built from another prompt; the Sea Change flash fiction word prompt I realized could be a much longer, more difficult story, so I got one part of the idea out and then went back and used it as my springboard for the rest.

Kid and pet POV is a thing I enjoy writing; it's an interesting way to look at things and people in a new way, and keep things (deceptively) simple but also poke at truths in ways adult POVs won't or even can't. So Zaine ended up the POV again, at 10 this time, where as in a previous story he was 5 himself. So, how much had he changed, how was he the same, and how much was he straining given the horrible situation?

It was still short enough to not need an outline or detailed summary/workup, but I did keep some quick, short notes for myself, especially if I had to pause. I knew eventually even Zaine's infamous patience would wear out--he was only 10, his father violently dead, uprooted from his home, his sister (that he's expected to take care of) silenced by traumatic mutism, and his mother's stress and grief weighing on him, and now a new place and more changes and natural fears and frustrations hitting him. So I knew I wanted the scene by the shore, and I knew I wanted him to snap (luckily for me, 5 year old Aeryn was a bit of a gremlin to push him over). The rest was just touristing around Yedlihmad through the eyes of a child and how Emelia, Aeryn, and Zaine would react to the place from their different perspectives.

Then I sat on it for a day, reread it, revised it, passed it through ProWriting Aid to check for some of my weak points that are hard to see, reread it again (outloud), revised a little more, realized I was dithering, figured out a title, and posted it. I honestly forget if I got a beta for it, but I think no; I only do that on occasion, though perhaps should more often.

Bad Buddy and Not Me were delightful binges that stayed in my brain for months after I finished watching and they’re still so good nearly a year later. The Eclipse was my first show that I watched while on-air and I think just the fact that I managed to not lose interest earns its spot; it was a great show in general and had me think so many thoughts. His (2020) took me by surprise with just how much I enjoyed it because it’s an older movie that’s not as hyped as the other 3 but wow, it touched me. 

The next 2 - tied:

Semantic Error

These didn’t quite manage to be my absolute favourites of the year but they’re two favourites nonetheless. Badhaai Do really touched me with the queer South Asian content and I thought they balanced the sadness and fun moments well. Semantic Error was truly so great and it honestly could’ve been tied with The Eclipse and His if I liked the ending a bit more; I’m also maybe kind of wanting a sequel after Park Seoham comes back from the military but only if it promises to be great.

These shows worked for me, had good to great production, and also took over my mind either intensely while I was watching or for weeks afterward (or both) - tied:

Some I just got attached to: Secret Crush On You, Love Mechanics, The Gifted

KinnPorsche gets it own category because I intensely hate parts of it and disliked the main characters (Kinn and Porsche) by the end but like... the acting, cinematography, VegasPete story (even though it was rushed and the after-credits was a bit hm) and how they took up my brain for months afterwards (I still read VP fic). It feels like I can’t rate it lower because of all that. This isn’t to the show’s credit but the 3 or so Kinn/Porsche fics I read before watching the show were incredible as well - this may actually be to the show’s detriment because I came in more than ready to love the show and the main pair, how did you make me manage to dislike these characters damn. 

These were generally good but just something was missing - either there was a production/story/acting issue that was bothering me a lot or the production was very good but it failed to take up any brain space after I finished watching.

High enjoyment or fondness, lacked in either production/acting/writing: No Touching At All (this one gave me brainworms for only a short period but it was still severe and had me making gifs bruv), Ghost Host, Ghost House, Do Revenge (the writing kinda fell apart at the end)

High production/acting, but lacked in making me care or be as invested as I should’ve been: Tale of a Thousand Stars, SOTUS S, Theory of Love, Love and Leashes

The Strongberry shorts were too short but A First Love Story is still great. Love of Secret is also good enough for being as short as it is but would’ve been better as a longer show that we could sink our teeth into.

Love in the Air is fucked because I didn’t care much about Payu/Rain’s half (although they were cute enough) but I was so deeply invested in Sky/Pai despite despising their beginning eps and disliking Pai. I loved the couple in the last few eps and also ep 13 had me going through it idk.

these had medium levels of both production and fondness but not enough to think about often or be great: His - I Didn't Mean To Fall In Love, My Secret Love

Special Mentions: The rest of the shows I watched were rated lower than that, though there were still a few that I have some fondness for because I like the concept or the acting pair or it just gave me something I wanted. This includes Cupid’s Last Wish, Fish Upon The Sky (2021), School's Out, Let's Date Now! (2021), Love In The Air Special, History 2: Right or Wrong (2018), He She It (2019). 

Favourite Pairs (characters):

PatPran: my delightful couple, so good for each other and so good to each other T.T working to meet in the middle and always on each other’s sides T.T for my favourite ships that are cute and delightful like this, usually they at least have intense codependency issues (one of my fave tropes fr) but PatPran don’t even have that! doing what needs to be done with their family and with long distance and just :’) The fact that we’re getting Our Skyy 2 with them is sooooooooo good to me

VegasPete: the opposite of PatPran. just sooooo rancid but it’s great and gross. The post-canon possibilities for them are endless, how am I still reading fic months later? I used to mostly read fics where they slowly heal together with Macau in their own place but recently I’ve also been obsessed with fics where the dynamics are a little fucked up, Pete doesn’t verbalize his discomfort during nsfw scenes, Vegas has breakdowns, etc. so good either way. don’t really want a sequel for them but AO3 writers are keeping me fed, thank you.

SeanWhite: they’re great, really enjoyed their dynamics and progression. made me feel like they’re both invested rather than one just chasing after the other. also read a few fics after finishing the show. 

Special Mentions: 

SkyPai are here somehow? I hated Prapai and how he was stalking Sky and hurting him in the earlier eps but then... somehow... amidst my irritation... I started liking them together a lot because Sky started liking him. By the last 3 eps and the special, I was so on board agh

Aye/Akk belong here with how much I’ve thought about them but it’s just that I was so into them for the 2.5 months while watching but haven’t thought about them much in the 2 months since the show finished. Our Skyy 2 eps might make me lose my mind though who knows

VeeMark had me watching tiktoks of them being cute before I’d even started the show man

does ToddBlack count if I was only obsessed with them for like 2 weeks and wrote a fic in a daze in that time? they’re still so interesting though

Punn/Claire from Gifted (2018) is an older show and it’s a het couple but they’re so <333

Favourite Pairs (actors):

KhaoFirst is my current favourite pairing, though I’ve started keeping up with them less than when I was watching the Eclipse. They’re just two very good actors and endearing people, so I keep up with them casually and am interested in seeing what they have next. I also like them as individual actors, so I’m a little disappointed they don’t have non-ship related shows next year (hopefully Moonlight Chicken won’t pair them up though)

I was very into OhmNanon after watching Bad Buddy and OffGun after watching Not Me but both lasted like 1 month or 2 and now i’m back to being very peripherally interested/almost uninterested in them as people, though I remain interested in them as actors.

I was also into YinWar for a bit after watching Love Mechanics and I want them to have a show next year so bad, whether it be Partner in Crime or not

idk what happened with netjames but i’m randomly into them recently and can’t wait for bed friend. Net especially is so beautiful

I’ve started following an account that translates PondPhuwin stuff, so I’m kinda interested in them and that might increase after I start watching Never Let Me Go

I’ve only watched a few videos of Seoham and Jaechan outside of their show but I do keep an eye on their rise, especially Jaechan since he’s not in the military and is rather in the public eye

Favourite Side Pairs

A few ships were really great and sometimes I liked them even more than the main couple and for a few, I’m excited for their upcoming main series. (Doing this in 2023 after this has been posted bc I like seeing NuerSyn in Cutie Pie 2 You)

InkPa (Bad Buddy): they held their own against PatPran, which is a feat in itself and I’m excited for their GL series 23.5

NuerSyn (Cutie Pie): bro they’re sooooo cute, my fave couple out of Cutie Pie for sure, I love them so bad and getting glimpses of them in Cutie Pie 2 You is great. 

RamKing (My Engineer): this isn’t unexpected, though I don’t love them quite as much as other people

PunnClaire (The Gifted): I love them, can’t believe they broke up ahhh the way Claire protected Punn from himself T.T

TouchDaisy (Secret Crush On You): I’m so mad they weren’t there more tf I loved them they were so cute

PuKhun (PS I Hate You): they were great, wish they had more screentime. glad the gays got a happy ending even though nobody else did. also i was won over by Pluem/Pat and Mond/Aye’s character’s couples by the end

ParkLee (My Secret Love): the established couple for 7 years ahh cute

Not Me could’ve been here if they gave me ToddBlack, GramNuch, EugeneNamo

Biggest Disappointments

To be a disappointment, I had to have at least semi-high hopes

Cutie Pie: This was one of my most anticipated of the year because I love the arranged marriage trope in fics and thought the hidden identity aspect would be so fun as well but yeah, shit writing rip didn’t like how they dealt with the tropes or characters or plot and it’s so frustrating to think about the wasted potential. hopefully domundi gets better writers for next year’s works because they’ve got a very intriguing batch

Cupid’s Last Wish: Also another of my most anticipated of the year because Win is in Lin’s body but despite being in a girl body, we and his love interest see him as a boy... ah so good of a concept. it wasn’t terrible and it delivered on the fun gender front but the writing for it was also weak

KinnPorsche: i’ve talked about this before but the writing is seriously such a big weakness for this show because how did you ruin Kinn and Porsche for me by the end and the plot is a mess
