Superman II (1980) featured some ground breaking special effects, in particular the battle between Superman and the supervillains General Zod, Ursa and Non and here is special effects designer Derek Meddings (1931-1995) on the model “battle” set of Superman II. For his work on Superman (1978), he was awarded a shared Special Achievement Award for special effects by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and shared the Michael Balcon Award of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). He was also nominated for the 1980 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Moonraker (1979), for the 1990 BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects for Batman (1989), and posthumously for a 1996 BAFTA Award for Best Achievement (in special effects) for GoldenEye (1995).

your eyes scanned through the classroom, searching for a specific person. dark brown hair had caught your attention. although many girls boasted dark brown hair, this girl was special. she had a way of lighting up every room she stepped foot in. her smile was contagious, and seemingly flawless, it could even be described as a remedy for a bad day.
the girl that possessed this enticing smile was none other than the one and only danielle marsh. she was an outstanding student, president of the surfing club, and was on the student council. her academic achievements were only the beginning of it all. she also possessed an extremely alluring visual. yet not even that could compare to her bewitching personality.
you liked to say that she had the personality of an angel, always putting others before herself, helping no matter the situation. she was humorous and had an outstanding moral compass. she was always kind and understanding. even the dullest students enjoyed her presence. you had observed all of this first hand, due to being seated behind her almost every school year.
you had never been too fond of school, yet you found yourself yearning to return every single time just to see her again. danielle had that effect on people. you did your best to avoid getting sick, although it could be considered mildly irrational and odd, you did your best to ensure perfect attendance. you woke up everyday, dragged yourself out of bed, and went to school, hoping to see her smile once again. it had become some sort of routine for you.
although you had been in the same class for almost six years, you had never spoken to one another. you kept to yourself and disappeared for most of your free period, while danielle remained with her friend group. you didn't want to force the interaction, fearing that it would feel awkward and leave a bad impression. so you waited and waited, hoping that every day would be the day you talked to her. yet that day never seemed to come.
the days had turned into weeks, and weeks into months, then before you knew it, it had been years. you had slightly given up hope, yet you still enjoyed her smile. you had chosen to just observe her from a distance, waiting for the moment to come.
when school let out for summer, your world seemed to turn into an old black and white tv. your life continued, but it was rarely fun. you occasionally ran into her while exploring new cafés and shops. those moments became your fleeting happiness.
Tumblr media
the sound of chalk moving along the blackboard filled the room. the class room was silent aside from the random creaking of the wooden chairs. you looked down at you watch, which read 1:27, and sighed, allowing your head to fall onto your now crossed arms. you moved your pencil along the lined paper and scribbled a few words. a small pain forming on your middle finger from holding the pencil too tight.
you let go of the pencil and looked up only to find danielle marsh staring at you. your eyes widened slowly before your body moved on its own. your head quickly looked down, your eyes shifting direction rapidly. a well manicured hand could be seen sliding a small paper onto your notebook. your eyes stared at the paper and you began to become curious.
you lifted your head slowly and reached to grab the paper. opening the neatly folded piece of paper, you saw a question.
‘did you understand the lesson?’
you grabbed your pencil and answered the question. lightly tapping on your desk, you caught danielle’s attention and sliding the paper towards her. she grabbed the paper and read your response. she quickly wrote something down and placed it back on your table. she had written another question down.
‘can you explain it to me after school?’
you hastily wrote down a simple ‘yes’ and returned the paper.
danielle turned and smiled at you. your face warmed up, your heart beat accelerated. you smiled back, your eyes turning into small crescents.
for the rest of the class you were in a state of euphoria, your dopamine levels seemed to have reached an all-time high. a small smile remained on your face. the rest of the class seemed to go by so slowly. you glanced up at the clock every few seconds, wondering if time had slowed down. you began to grow impatient, your leg bouncing up and down rapidly.
73 long and dreadful minutes had finally passed. now you only had one class left before you would meet up with danielle. you grabbed your stuff and put them in your bag. you looked up from your bag to see danielle.
“can we meet in the gym?” she asked. “i have volleyball practice today.”
“uh, yeah sure.” you said, mentally checking your schedule. “for how long do you have practice..?”
“not too long, just about half and hour.” she said, tugging on her bag’s strap.
“ok, i’ll see you there then.” you said, grabbing your bag and hastily walking out of the classroom.
Tumblr media
after another 80 minutes, classes had finally concluded. you made your way to the gym and walked at a quick pace. you opened the gym door and there she was. danielle spotted you and showed you were to sit and place your things. you set your things down on the bleachers and took out your phone.
you checked the time and saw it read 4:10, you looked back up and saw the team begin their drills. your lack of knowledge on the sport was finally revealing itself. you continued observing, noticing small details about danielle that you had never seemed to notice. the small frown on her brow when she couldn't receive the ball, the way she shook her head lightly when she began to become frustrated. the way she tapped the tip of her foot on the floor before the game began interested you.
you continued that for the next half hour. when the buzzer sounded, danielle grabbed a water bottle and jogged over to you.
“what’d you think?” she said, promptly taking a quick sip of water.
“it's cool,” you started. “looks a bit tiring though.”
“it is tiring,” she paused briefly, presumably to catch her breath. “but it’s really fun.”
“seems fun..” you mumbled. “should we get started?” you asked, looking at your watch.
“oh yeah, of course.” she said, smiling at you. “i’ll go get my notebook.” danielle ran down the bleachers and disappeared into the locker room. she came back shortly, her notebook and pencil in hand.
Tumblr media
“so you have to add 273 to the degrees celsius to get kelvin..?” danielle repeated, although it seemed more like a question.
“yeah, and to get celsius from kelvin, you have to subtract 273.” you explained. “if you need more help you can ask me whenever.”
“i’ll make sure to do that.” she said, warmly smiling at you. “how are you going to get home..?”
“oh, i’m going to walk.” you said, putting your stuff away in your bag.
“well then, i’m going to head out.” she said, bowing her head slightly. “thank you for the help, i’ll see you tomorrow.” she smiled and lowered her head once again.
“bye danielle.” you said, waving lightly at her.
you watched as she went down the bleachers and out the doors. you released a breath you didn't know you were holding. your heart was racing and your body temperature was high. you picked up your bag and began to leave the gym.
Tumblr media
after what seemed to be fifteen minutes, you had arrived home. you made your way directly to your room. you set your book bag down near your desk and grabbed a sheet of lined paper. pulling your pencil out of its case, you began to document the details of your day. you began from the beginning, explaining a potential injury due to a simple moment of carelessness, all the way to the end, when you helped danielle after school.
finishing your journal entry, you wrote down the date and time and ‘signed off’ for the night. you began to do some simple chores alongside your schoolwork, and then you ate dinner.
when dinner ended, you excused yourself and went to shower and do your nighttime routine. you finished the day by taking some vitamins and then you did your dental hygiene routine and headed to sleep.
(pretend there is a spacer🤥)
your alarm blared loudly, echoing throughout your mildly empty room. you sluggishly moved your hand to turn off the alarm. once the alarm was off, you yawned and began to rub your eyes gently with your hands. you began to sit up and stretched your arms out as if you were trying to grab something. yawning once again, you got up from your bed and finally began your day.
you got dressed, dragging your feet along with every move. finally being pulled out of your tired feeling, you headed to the kitchen and put a slice of bread into the toaster. you moved around quickly, reaching into the fridge to grab some strawberries. you washed the red fruit as you waited for the bread to be done. you sliced the fruit and placed it into a small bowl.
the toaster dinged and the bread shot up. you rapidly grabbed a plate and placed the bread on the plate. you set the plate and the bowl down on the kitchen island and sat down. you took this time to check your social media and notifications you received at night. after around fifteen minutes you finished eating and set the dishes in the sink, opting to wash them when you got back from school. you washed your hands and grabbed your bag, you headed out the door a few moments later.
Tumblr media
the walk to school was quiet. the wind blew gently and then sun shone dimly. the sky was a light shade of grey, many clouds could be seen. you enjoyed the light breeze as it grazed your skin. the day seemed to be going perfectly, after all, the shade was always your place.
continuing your walk, you put on your headphones and began listening to some music. scent by oceanfromtheblue started to play. you immersed yourself in the beat and subconsciously began to walk faster. you arrived at school in no time and there stood danielle.
had she been waiting for you? maybe you were hallucinating?
“y/n!” she called out. she motioned for you to come closer.
you approached her and took off your headphones. you hesitantly walked closer to her.
“i wanted to thank you for your help.” she said, grabbing something out of her bag. “my mom made them last night.”
she held a brown paper bag in her hands. you took the bag from her and opened it. inside were cookies, multiple types and of different shapes and sizes.
“thank you.” you said, smiling at her. you pinched yourself discreetly. you were under the belief that you were dreaming. “they smell good, i’ll eat them when i get home.”
you thanked her once again and hid your goodbyes and headed off to your class. once you arrived at your classroom, you sat down and stared out the window.
“did i make a good impression?” you asked yourself, again and again. “maybe we'll be friends in the future.”
many thoughts ran through your mind. your waiting had finally paid off, you had made a good impression, and you had finally become acquaintances.
“i'll wait patiently again.” you thought. then you heard the small patters of the raindrops. it suddenly begun raining. the forecast had predicted sunny days for the rest of the week.
“huh, how odd.” you said, watching the rain fall.
you looked out the window and saw danielle standing in the rain. you leaped from your seat and rushed out, your umbrella in hand. you raced down the school stairs, nearly tripping, and out the main entrance. you opened your umbrella and walked up to her.
“you're going to get sick.” you said, holding the umbrella over her head. “let's go inside, you’ll get cold out here.”
you failed to notice danielle’s teary eyes.
“i’m going home.” she mumbled.
“huh?” you said. “do you not feel well or something..?”
“yeah, i feel sick.” she replied. danielle didn't bother looking up from the ground. her head hung low and she sniffles every once in a while.
“are you ok? do you need medicine or something?” you asked, lowering your face to look at her face.
that's when you took notice of her tear stained cheeks and red eyes.
“what happened?” you asked, you placed your hand on her shoulder.
“he broke up with me.” she said, looking you in the eye. “so suddenly, i thought we were doing fine.”
“it's his loss, i don't know one person that wouldn't like being with you.” you said. “there's a place near here, it's a flower shop and a café.”
you placed you hand on her back and began tracing shapes on her back. you took danielle's hand and let go of the umbrella and began walking off towards the café.
Tumblr media
the doorbell chimed as you and danielle entered the place. your hair was dripping water but danielle was smiling. you told her to order whatever she wants and you headed off to the floral shop. you grabbed a daisy. you payed for it and walked back to danielle.
“what'd you get”? you asked her.
“a scone.” she replied.
“ooo, good choice, the scones here are so good.” you said, you handed danielle the daisy. “for you.”
“daisies can mean new beginnings.” you said.
“thank you y/n.” she said.
you two spent a long time at the café. you got to know each other and talked about your passions.
it seems that even in concrete a daisy can bloom. with enough patience and love, it can bloom into something beautiful. it could even change your life, turn something dull into something colorful.

Nominated for "Best Feature Film" at the Golden Rooster Award: "Hidden Blade": a hidden arrow that breaks the unspoken rules of box office for literary and artistic films
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A classic is a kind of work,
It continues to give rise to clouds of criticism of it,
And keep getting rid of it,
It never completes what it has to say.
Hidden Blade, whose global box office is still rising, is the box office ceiling for domestic literary and artistic films. The background of this performance is that serious films have encountered an era of shallow reading, the industry and the public have been torn apart, and box office has become an undercurrent sweeping everything. However, because literary films do not conform to the shallow entertainment psychology, their niche nature is predicted by bloodthirsty and crude evaluations, and they are ahead of schedule. They are killed by film placement rate.
The true mission of film︱Making culture visible
The turbulent clouds and red color in the broad field of vision are somewhat incompatible with the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year. Released on the first day of the Lunar New Year, it is a kind of performance art in itself... It is very cliché, and it is exactly the same as the self-deprecation of super commercial films. As a spy war literary film, "Hidden Blade" has achieved a breakthrough in innovative expression of Chinese films, and its heterogeneity is unique among domestic films.
The dramatic tension of too many movies relies entirely on scenes and special effects, which disappear once they leave the theater. "Hidden Blade" creates a huge psychological magnetic field, which is still exciting even if it is separated from the audio-visual environment. The tone threshold of "Hidden Blade" is not some kind of contempt for the audience, but the ultimate respect for the audience, history, and movies.
Literary films are a type of film relative to the concept of commercial films. They focus on artistic expression and cultural connotation, and try to pursue higher aesthetic values and cultural significance. Their production is also different from commercial films: commercial films pursue commercial interests or mass entertainment, and take the movie box office as the main goal, while literary films focus on the artistry and cultural connotation of the film.
Transgressing norms and offending common sense, art films are pioneers of film. They often fail but expand the boundaries of film. There are two literary classics in the history of world cinema, "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Westward Journey". They failed miserably at the box office when they were first released. However, they accumulated a large number of die-hard fans through the later dissemination of images. After years of accumulation, they became indelible classics.
The core of the value counterattack between the two works is still that gold will always shine. The former's exploration of human nature and social systems has created a milestone in modern cinema, while the latter's postmodern deconstructive stream of consciousness has won resonance in an era of subversion of tradition.
As a cultural carrier, movies are the most intuitive and transparent value expression of the thoughts of the times. Although most of the classics handed down from ancient times are not the true understanding of the thinkers' era, they have been accepted by the public after years of precipitation. As a result, classics continue to increase in value over the course of history. This is the power of classics and the reason why we respect classics.
As early as in "The Death of Romance", Cheng Er used lines to express his feelings, "Movies are made for the audience of the next century." Look, for artists who break through the context of their times, the feedback they receive from the times is often lagging or misaligned, although this misalignment itself is precisely the connotation of the avant-garde. Yes, art films have always been a disadvantaged group in the industry that suffers at the box office.
In contrast to the tragic box office situation, the ambition and strength of literary films in film art awards. This is also the reason why "Hidden Blade" recently swept the 36th Golden Rooster Awards, with 8 major nominations and caused controversy among public opinion.
The existence of "Hidden Blade" is indeed an isolated example of a domestic literary film. With a box office of 931 million, it is not only the highest-grossing film in director Cheng Er's career, it is even several times the total box office of all his previous works! It's so stunning that "Hidden Blade" has always been criticized by the public, expelled from the art film camp by default in the name of "removing the highest score"!
"No one knows your name, but your achievements are immortal." The grand proposition of the unknown hero in "Hidden Blade" is more sentimental about family and country than any of Cheng Er's previous works. And does this main theme of "greatness, light, and justice" fit in with the art film's original understanding of "the world, society, and life" for individuals and the authorial expression of film language?
"Hidden Blade" is not the first of its kind to draw on commercial marketing for a literary film. At that time, "Fireworks in the Day" was announced as a romantic suspense film, and it received similar reviews and received double box office revenue. It can be seen that only true literature and art dare to joke about "super commercial films".
Cheng Er responded to this joke in an interview with "China News Weekly", "I was editing the film that day, and then they came in with their mobile phones to show me, and said that everyone still thought it was too literary, and I said let's just type a line. Come out - a super commercial film. This is a joke, and indeed no one put such a slogan in the trailer."
He said that he just found it interesting and that there was nothing to rebel about and it was not worth rebelling against. Confidence and relaxation are often qualities of an artist. These qualities make people stand out like fireflies in the dark, allowing the public to quickly pick them up from the crowd. And Cheng Er slowly titled a serious film "super commercial film" because of his humor.
Movies are not just an art of light and shadow | they are also an art that can cultivate people
Low box office is not the standard for art films. “When art is dressed in shabby clothes, it is easiest for people to recognize it as art.” However, this is not an essential representation of art, but the quality of the audience that needs to be improved. The complaints faced by "Hidden Blade" are the same as those faced by literary films as a whole, which is the contradiction between the film's authorial expression and public acceptance.
But does literature and art have to be a niche? Does it deserve to be obscure and slow-paced? Come to think of it, no one is more qualified to answer than "Hidden Blade", who has boiled the black water into a world of wealth and led the public's aesthetic appreciation with niche art!
The most representative narrative style of Cheng Er's films is "flashback narrative", which established his unique creative and imaging style. It invites the audience to participate, rely on brain supplements to build together, and gain the pleasure of decoding. It is a true "understanding", and it is easy to be confused if you don't understand. Such films pursue aesthetics and reflection, and are usually aimed at more mature and artistic audiences.
Movies are products of the cultural industry and are essentially consumed cultural products. In the context of the influx of capital and hot money into the film market and the industrialized mass production of film culture, commercial films are certainly high-return cultural snacks tailored for audiences. Even the creators of literary and artistic films are hard-pressed to avoid being judged by box office success . "The concept of influence or even kidnapping.
It is common for literary films to sell less than 5 million yuan. From Chen Zheyi softly asking the sky, "Why are elegant and gentle people scolded?" to Huang Xufeng angrily choking netizens, "I have no merit but hard work." There is no antidote in the world. The reason why literary and artistic films are criticized is often because in the fast-food era of shallow reading, literary and artistic films have to embrace the sinking market and attract non-target audiences in order to pursue box office.
But movies are just products? No, it is still a cultural expression and a carrier of social values. Comparing movies to products, then literary and artistic films are obviously not fast-moving consumer goods. When facing capital and the market, how can they be in line with the public while not losing their authorial nature? Cheng Er said, "Good-looking art films are also good commodities, and excellent commercial films are also a kind of art."
When it comes to art, most people may think that art is highbrow, aloof, and far away from daily life. And this is not the case. Yu Hua said in the roadshow of "The Mistake by the River", what does it mean to understand? In fact, it is whether it can overlap with our own life experience. If there is overlap, you can understand it. If there is no overlap, you can't understand it. That's normal.
In this explanation, understanding or not understanding is not profound. And Cheng Er has always said that the audience should not be underestimated. People who watch movies are influenced by their own likes and dislikes. Whatever they feel is what they have. Whether they understand or not is not that important.
The audience should not be too demanding to understand, and the artist should also be down-to-earth. Art for the sake of art is not true art. "Hidden Blade" is not only a literary film, but also a literary footnote to Chinese films, because it truly expresses the cruelty of history but is still full of artistic beauty. Cheng Er is very familiar with the history of the Republic of China and knows the intricate relationships between characters.
"Hidden Blade" is composed of real historical details as fine as twists and turns. When I say I can’t understand it, I’m not expressing disdain, but living in China, it’s difficult to understand the history of 5,000 years of civilization, but there is absolutely no threshold for mastering the history of the Anti-Japanese War! It is understandable that one cannot appreciate the narrative technique due to aesthetic differences, but the Internet atrocities of selling one’s soul for five cents and tainting the theme of the film are unforgivable.
There is no universal set of aesthetic rules in the world, but artists try to legislate aesthetics. Every era has its own branded dogma, until the next generation of artists establishes their own profession. Therefore, Gombrich exorcized art and said, "There is no art, only artists." He hoped that the world would stop enshrining art in shrines and use mystery and sacredness to Feeling separates oneself from the work.
There is also a similar "death of the author theory" in the literary field, which means that the author is as if dead when the work is born, and the interpretation and evaluation of the work are left to the readers. That is, there are a thousand Hamlets for a thousand readers, and there is no standard answer.
Just like we cannot require every movie to go straight to the international film festival awards, but also to hit the hearts of the audience and be a classic that will be passed down forever. We cannot require every movie viewer to have high film literacy from the beginning, and to be able to get the spiritual resonance of the creative intention. The growth of movies, filmmakers, and movie audiences requires more tolerant soil and space.
Of course, there is really little space left for literary and artistic films in theaters now! No matter at home or abroad, when the public unanimously agrees that "artistic films deserve low box office", please understand that the industry should leave some room for exploration for artistic films. Allow them to be ignorant of the customs, and only on the soil of tolerance can viable artistic flowers bloom.
Social aesthetic value orientation︱The purpose and driving force of movies
"A lame dog walks through the bombed street scene." One day, Cheng Er took a pen filled with ink and wrote this sentence on the paper. At that time, no one, including himself, knew it, but it was becoming the starting point for a movie called "Hidden Blade," and this moment of brutal aesthetics became the famous scene of the movie.
Personal aesthetics are free, but social aesthetics has a paradigm. Education and social culture will influence and standardize aesthetics and shape aesthetic orientation. Different eras and different environments have different aesthetic orientations, and different aesthetic orientations make people make different value choices. That is to say, no matter how free the aesthetics and how diverse the values are, as long as the rice is sown, it will never grow into tares.
Art and commerce are the two legs of movies. Art movies are full of vitality, and commercial movies are lively. When the leg of literature and art is lame, it is not unfair that Chinese films have been reduced from regulars on the awards podium at international film festivals to regulars on the red carpet.
Yes, there is indeed a "silver-like pewter tip" in the name of art. When artistic conscience is marginalized by desire, the so-called art becomes only a barren and pale flower shelf that cannot withstand scrutiny and argumentation. But "Hidden Blade" allows us to see how an exquisite literary film is polished and shaped, and even simple film layouts contain shooting skills.
Generally, it is the director's habit to record the scene first, then the actors perform, and the cameraman follows the camera movement, but this is not the case on Cheng Er's set. Wang Yibo once mentioned that the crew respects the actors very much. The filming scene is very quiet. Once the mood enters the state, the photographer shoots directly. After the scene is finished, the filming will be finished. The filming will never interrupt the actors' brewing emotions.
In the later stage, Cheng Er slept directly in the studio and only did one thing every day, cut, cut, cut! Thanks to his almost fanatical work status, Cheng Er didn't even get exposed to the sun last year! It took seven years to sharpen a sword, just for a different Chinese movie. Incorporate the main melody into genre movies, and use the language and audio-visual rhythm of genre movies to achieve innovative expression of the main melody theme.
"A truly good movie must be more commercial than commercial and more artistic than art. For me, what I have always wanted to do is to be more commercial than commercial and more artistic than artistic." Cheng Er said this and did the same.
Cheng Er's images are full of subtle metaphors. Puppet Manchukuo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, the spiritual narrative about the city in "Hidden Blade" permeates the architectural language of Rongzhai, No. 76, No. 567 Xiafei Road, Central Market, and Man Mo Temple; it is hidden in Japanese, Shanghai dialect, The mixture of pidgin and Cantonese arouses emotional resonance and deep thinking in the audience.
The Puppet Manchukuo, which only exists in the dialogue between Watanabe and Mr. Ye, is like a ghost with the chill of a daydream; the isolated island in Shanghai, which occupies the main part of the film, exudes luxury and inconsistency in its exquisiteness; and Hong Kong, as the hub of the international anti-Japanese united front, is full of human fireworks, revealing a simple and soothing world.
Dark clouds are pressing down, devastation is everywhere, and at the end of the tunnel, the historical information in the image of the current situation is compressed into a minimalist narrative, waiting to be decompressed. Until the dark wormhole of the theater, the historical words in the spy war narrative rushed towards us...
The anti-Japanese drama consumes misery, the anti-war themes are reproduced in large numbers, and the massacres cause psychological discomfort... In the past, expressions of the history of national suffering often followed the rules of exposing cruelty, exposing blood, and even exchanging violence for violence. What is shocking about "Hidden Blade" is that it uses beauty to overcome ugliness. It is amazing: It turns out that suffering can be interpreted calmly, with warmth and depth! "You can't get involved in the frame," is the domineering determination of the man behind the scenes.
Light and heavy, cold and warm, it completes the unfinished soul judgment on a country's sin of aggression in reality. In the sense of cultural export, "Hidden Blade" integrates the isolated history of China's anti-Japanese resistance into the world narrative of the great history of World War II.
It is a message from the times to the times. In the theater, "Hidden Blade" makes us feel the power of literature and art. After walking out of the theater, you will naturally understand what the merits of the unknown are!

opinion on the porcelain Graves skin???? I don’t hate it but I’m mad it’ll take another year or more until we get another one and porcelain is such a boring theme. Stick him in an interesting skin line for once riot.
Sincerely? I tried to like this skin, I really tried, but.. :/
Well, on twitter I compared Porcelain Graves with the WR exclusive skin Dragon Lantern Graves (not the special edition) I'll transcribe it here.
Let's start with splasharts. Wild Rift's Splash arts are generally criticized, many times I don't agree, some of them are of even higher quality than those of League, which is the case of Dragon Lantern Graves. Even though it's not Graves' best splash, or the best skinline splash, it's pretty and pleasant, my only criticism is that it's a little too static, there's not much movement
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the Graves porcelain splash has some problems, at first glance it is.. pretty, but whenever you look at it, there seems to be something wrong, it really is a strange splash, and it's not the fault of the artist who made it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Porcelain Graves Splash Concepts by Santiago Parra
in the end, they(riot) decided to increase the proportions and add a lot of texture, to achieve this result, so... yeah, it's not the best splash. but it's pretty
Dragon Lantern: 1
Porcelain: 0
About the VFX, let's be honest, they tend to do something very mediocre with Graves when it comes to visual effects, apart from his legendary skin (which it would be stupid of them to do something too simple) Graves' recent epic skins haven't received as much love.
Even though the Dragon Lantern skin has basically the same sounds as the base skin (i guess) the quality of the VFX is absurdly good (better than his legendary if you allow me to say). The Porcelain one.. is... mediocre.. ofc they couldn't put something cool like Lux and Lissandra's skins, right?
I can't post more than one video in a post, so here are the links so you can see the difference between the VFX of Dragon Lantern Graves and Porcelain Graves.
Dragon Lantern: 2
Porcelain: 0
Ok, let's get to the part that irritated me the most. The narrative..
Yes, we agree that Graves is not a big "important" character in Runeterra, he is not there to be a protagonist. That doesn't mean he can't cause real chaos, and set Bilgewater on fire just in an attempt to get revenge on his current partner. Why did I bring this up? because it is absurd to portray Graves as a pathetic and irrelevant character.
With that in mind, read Porcelain Graves' bio:
Not long after gunpowder was invented, the Zodiac searched for a new protector of the Dragon Relic. Though ancient and wise, the gods struggled to find someone worthy, so they settled for Malcolm Graves. Eventually his expertise in firepower was pointed in the right direction (away from all the breakable vases)
It's ridiculous, don't you think?
They are so fond of abusing the fact that Graves is, in some ways, a comic relief, that they make him the real joke, to the exclusion of everything else about him, and making him "unworthy". It's like they're saying "ugh, should this guy really be here? Who called him?". Whoever wrote the narrative of porcelain skinline seems to hate him, for real..
Now let's go to Dragon Lantern Graves' bio:
Graves, a free-spirited mercenary from a foreign land, can hardly wait to join in the fun at the gala. For this burly maverick, harmless ol' lanterns are no more than impractical ornaments—he much prefers filling up massive dragonflame cannons and setting the night sky ablaze with 'em booming explosions and dazzling lights!
1000% better, right? It's almost a delight. It's fun, brings out a little of who he is, and doesn't degrade his image :D
Dragon Lantern: 3
Porcelain: 0

Aikatsu song reviews: Glass Doll
Tumblr media
Song
I like to think of this as the Aikatsu song that gets everyone excited, but I'm sure that can't be true of everyone... it's still an Aikatsu classic and one of the franchise's best works, though. It's heavy enough to appease those who are fans of gothic metal, but light enough to appease those who aren't... I think. Even if it doesn't have metal-style screams and growls, the influence is still there – the song's composer stated that the song was inspired by Dream Theater and Nightwish. And honestly it doesn't need to get any more metal than it is – I'm sure it already scared the kids anyway.
The intro does a great job building up the tension, using a keyboard or synth organ to achieve a very glassy sound, and repeating the same pattern to somehow make the listener feel unease and a false sense of security at the same time. As the glassy pattern repeats, you know it's going to change somehow and get even scarier. Sure enough, the beat drops and the song straight up turns into metal, but it's surprisingly clean metal that's atmospheric but not overwhelming. As the song goes on, the melody takes on a tone more reminiscent of pop-rock, but it still retains the atmospheric heaviness that makes it special.
In a lot of Aikatsu songs, the synth instruments blend in well with the live instruments, but in this song, the divide is quite obvious. The synths (especially the keyboard) have a sort of blocky, computer-y quality that stands out against the more expressive sounds of the guitar and bass. Sometimes it straight-up sounds like video game sound effects. Also, the percussion during the first verse is kind of annoying. I don't know if they were trying to go for the sound of a shutter flapping in the wind or some kind of creepy atmospheric thing or what, but it's just annoying to me.
Personally, I think the guitar 'solo' (technically not a solo since it also has drums and keyboard) is too long, and I found myself getting bored/annoyed before it was even halfway done. But I do understand that a minute-and-a-half guitar solo is exactly what this song needs in order to get the metalheads sold on it. I get it.
Vocals
They're the biggest thing holding this song back from being "true" metal, but honestly, I don't see it as a problem. It's a mistake to assume that all rock songs need powerful vocals. Yurika's voice gives the song a slightly delicate quality that makes the song feel more mature, and Sunao's backing vocals help create a haunting vibe.
In the Juri & Rin version, Rin's vocals are basically what you'd expect, and Juri... wow. She really gives the song a whole new life with her ethereal, emotional singing style. I can almost imagine her singing this under a spotlight while dangling from a chandelier and holding a single wilting rose. Miho sings this song in a way that shows how Juri is both a singer and an actress.
Lyrics
Depression. These are lyrics about depression! I mean, they're also just "gothic sounding" lyrics that convey the image of a vampire rock idol, but they're definitely about a person in distress. There are multiple times when I felt depressed and started crying and then just decided "you know what, it's Glass Doll time". And this song helped me, honestly.
Choreography
They were definitely going for a live rock show feeling... in vibes, not practicality. It looks like something that might work for a real concert, until the performers hilariously start running away from the microphones and just running all over the stage. There are also some unfitting bouncing/shaking movements during parts with a slower, heavier rhythm. Honestly, the choreography is probably the weakest thing about this song, especially with the awkward early CGI and a lot of angles that don't do it any favours. However, I do like the choreography near the end, especially the knocking part.
Visuals
I love the stage design!!! I especially like the bat-shaped chandeliers, wrought iron fence, and blue roses with curling vines. They even had gold bats escape from the Special Appeal and fly around the stage at the end of Yurika's performance in episode 20. The dark stage works really well against Yurika's clear white aura that glows like a ghost.
It's a real shame they never reworked the performance with updated CGI. It would've looked so good.
Good points: Intense atmosphere, good lyrics, reaches a level of hardcore rarely found in children's anime music Bad points: Guitar solo is too long, some instrumentals have a slightly stilted or computer-y quality
Rating: 9.6/10 Personal rating: Also 9.6/10, even though I think I like this song more than most people do.

Caleb said "our gifts are so rare, so special" as if not every ghost can do it, plus when Willie looked surprised after Alex said he could become visible playing with Julie.
However, my vision on Caleb is that he is a liar manipulative predator. so obviously he'd try to make the boys feel special and unique before trapping them into a spell.
So i think ghosts can have tons of abilities that all they need is time and practice to control, like when Alex learned how to hold things properly. So here is a list of things i think ghosts can do in the jatp universe:
Transportation: ofc. we've seen it. they poof in. They poof out. No biggie. Except how far it goes? How many ghosts can they transport? Can they transport lifers? it's probably the easiest ghost skills to have.
Objects Summoning: sure they can summon their instruments bc is attached to their souls but i doubt they can't learn to summom any object they put their mind to, if they can play it, they can conjure it. Could be learned through concentration, bc it might sound easy like poofing from place to place, but it'd involve traveling actual material objects through space, and since touching and holding stuff is also something u need to put your mind to it, certainly it also needs concentration.
Energy Control: Willie can flick the cop's vehicle lights. and flicking lights has always been a ghost thing. They could definitely learn that skill for special stage effects, watch the tv w/o touching the remote, pass messages, freak someone out, create a distraction, infinite possibilities. I also think they could absorb that energy within themselves and release it somewhere else.* It could be learned through concentrating and finding the right timing (i think Alex would master it.)
* if ghosts are made of energy and air there's no way they can't interact with other kinds of energy. magic and science are just like batman and bruce wayne.
Levitating: Caleb can levitate, other ghosts might as well. i think they could achieve by meditating and learning to clear their mind. (Reggie would kill it y'all) they could also lift other objects without actual touch them. imagine their final battle with Caleb and just as they are going to lose, Caleb falls on his face bc someone (reggie) tried to catch a heavy object and it accidentally hit Caleb's head?
Becoming Visible/Tangible: They can do it, we've seen it. ofc it was a magic move after a power of friendship moment, But, i believe they could figure out how to control who can see/touch them and who can't, my guess is that they'd have to visualize and wish to be perceived by someone. same goes for being heard or not. (Luke can work this one easy bc he has a need to be perceived) and since Caleb can make a whole bunch of ghosts appear and disappear, im sure Alex could make Willie visible for Julie.
Possession: im gonna guess this is some unethical shit bc u can actually damage someone's soul by trying to hijack their body. but im sure they could impersonate someone and absorb their energy, so u can control them better. Caleb is putting it off tho.
Energy Sharing: this one is very oc if im being honest. but imagine a ghost having such positive or negative energy from feelings he suppressed or expressed vividly before they died, so they could project that energy in a way that could affect people and ghosts around them? It might not be the best power bc its kinda nonconsenting, but it can also be hard to acknowledge they have a power like that.
That's mostly it. I dont think Willie knows all of the ghosts skills, i guess Caleb just lied to him as he did to the others, but he can groq out of it and learn. Sure some of these requires some focus and that might be hard for Alex, but learning skills can go different for everyone. sure one is gotta get it easier than others but these boys are musicians, they're used to combining their different skills together.

Project RBH Devlog 0019
This week has certainly been an unexpected journey.
Tumblr media
As I thought, including Damage Numbers has allowed me to do all kinds of playtesting and bug hunting; I simply didn’t expect to find the bugs that I found. Which, to be fair, I don’t expect to find most of the bugs that I find.
Adding damage numbers was pretty much as easy as I expected it to be. It’s more or less a particle system—not the built-in particle system that the GameMaker engine has, but functionally very similar—that spawns a bit of text showing how much damage the target took. The text rises slightly by decreasing it’s position on the Y axis, with its movement on the X axis randomized. A simple dropshadow effect for readability, and voila! Damage Numbers.
Now, the system isn’t perfect. Right now, as you saw above, walls produce damage numbers because they also run the damage handling code necessary to make the bullets destroy themselves upon impact which is extremely crucial in a game with this many bullets flying around the screen. Otherwise there could easily be some serious memory issues, and that would be Bad. Also, GameMaker isn’t exactly the greatest with scaling most fonts, so it looks a bit blurry. You’ve probably noticed this issue on the Game Over screen. But, like pretty much all visual elements currently in the build, It’s Good Enough For Now.
The best part is that the code already supports rescaling the damage number when you get a Critical Hit.
Tumblr media
The size is dependent on your Overcrit rather than the actual raw damage, to be clear. If my base damage is 500 or something ridiculous, it will show the damage number at the exact same size as if it was only 1.
But I mentioned bugs, did I not? And oh boy, were there some bugs that I found.
First of all, the Overcrit system resulted in unintentional exponential damage output, not linear. This is a problem because it means that there was literally no way to make a character build in this game that would be anywhere near as good as increasing your Critical Hit Chance to over 200%. While I could simply limit your Critical Hit Chance, that feels against the spirit of letting players create procedurally generated absolute nonsense character builds and bullet hell nightmares to slaughter enemies with.
I also discovered a strange problem when shooting the walls. If you happen to hit two objects simultaneously, they both run the damage code on the same bullet, which makes sense. What I had not realized is that if, for example, I increased the damage of the bullet because of a Critical Hit, then whichever object the engine has run the code second will already be taking the Critical Hit Damage and could possible crit again.
Both of these problems had the same solution: a temporary variable in the bullet that stores the base damage of the bullet. The Critical Hit uses this number to achieve linear grown instead of repeatedly doubling or tripling the base damage, and at the end of the script I reset the damage back to the base damage, so the second object gets a clean bullet to work with.
Easy.
I also discovered another respawn bug, in that I was not properly resetting the player’s Critical Multiplier, so every time you died and respawned, your Critical Hits got stronger. This is not what I would call intended behavior, so I quickly fixed that too. Perhaps this was the source of the peculiar bug that I thought I saw last week that made enemies suddenly die? I may never know for sure.
Until next Devlog!

Oppenheimer (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Woah Nolan, when I asked you to redeem yourself after Tenet I did not mean literally annihilate all my senses!!
Plot: The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
Many have set forth upon the epic cinematic quest of experiencing ‘Barbenheimer’. My screening was filled with audience members wearing bright pink and slurping slushies from special reusable Barbie cups. Ironically it was those individuals that ended up leaving the movie half way when they realised that this isn’t the free spirited light-hearted entertainment promised by the internet phenomenon, and that Oppenheimer is a serious and an intelligent piece of filmmaking that retells an important part of history with a constant harrowing feeling of dread throughout, and that this may be a bit too much to handle for a casual viewer. And in regards to Barbenheimer, I salute those that achieve this one-day feat, however that’s over 5 hours of staring at a big cinema screen. That’s a whole lotta movie. With my migraines I cannot hack it. I am truly weak, although additionally my dear fiancée had zero interest in seeing Oppenheimer however very much is excited for Barbie, so the latter I will check out at a later date with her. Instead I went to see this new Nolan epic myself, and I must say it’s a good one!
It’s very different to Christopher Nolan’s more recent cinematic entries that are more science-fiction based, and instead treads straight through the biopic/drama genre, yet shows that his style is very much fit for the subject matter. Using Nolan’s typical non-linear way of storytelling, this film weaves narratives and different time periods seamlessly as it explores the profound depths of a man who’s actions altered the world’s trajectory forever, for better or worse. This is such an interesting and pivotal part of history, and Nolan takes his time telling you this story, though he never panders to the audience. There are many scenes where characters are simply talking and lots of quick dialogue is being thrown around revolving around political and physics-based topics, and very much demands the audience’s full attention so as to not miss a single detail. I was enthralled by this movie from start to finish.
This is a movie for cinephiles. From filming on 65mm larger format film, featuring for the first time ever sections in IMAX black and white analog photography and  utilised extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery. It is strange for me to be complimenting a movie for lack of visual effects, as back in the day CGI was all the rave, and impressive use of computer animated imagery would be applauded, however in the current climate’s over saturated Hollywood blockbusters seeing a big budget movie that relies sorely on practical and camera lighting effects is truly immense - especially when the movie’s scope is as big as Oppenheimer. From when Oppenheimer is having mental images of fire and space to the actual atomic bomb being set off, this film needs to be seen on the big screen. The sound design and score perfectly add to the never-ending haunting feel of the film.
Cillian Murphy has always be a tour de force, however this may be his role of a lifetime. He truly becomes J. Robert Oppenheimer, and he expresses so much with his eyes - the fear, the prowess, the loss, the determination, the despair - so many emotions. Truly one hell of a performance. Robert Downey Jr. is a shoe-horn for a Best Supporting Actor nod at the Academy Awards, and proves here that after a decade of being stuck doing superhero shenanigans he can still give a proper captivating performance. He isn’t in the film much, but his performance sticks out long after the credits roll. From the delivery to the mannerisms, you can sense the malicious nature of his character. Matt Damon is solid, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh both bring tears, Alden Ehrenreich brings some light humour, Gary Oldman pops in for a scene... Honestly there are so many famous faces in this film that I originally did not know were in this, so it’s best to not spoil all the appearances. But the entire cast is giving it their A-game, with as aforementioned Murphy and Downey being the MVPs.
Oppenheimer is a fascinating and phenomenal historical epic that provides insight into an important moment when the world changed, and Nolan uses his Nolanisms to great effect to deliver a truly captivating and haunting movie-going experience. Seems like Tenet was but a slight hiccup in the director's incredible cinematic journey.
Overall score: 8/10

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Tumblr media
It feels like every single fantasy film has been building up to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This sprawling world of myth and magic is a landmark achievement. The special effects, characters, art direction, score, scale and faithfulness to the source material make it the kind of picture that will shape generations. It’s big, wonderful and epic but also small, intimate and emotional. This is a labor of love and it shows.
In the Second Age of Middle-earth, the Dark Lord Sauron forged the One Ring. With its power, he was poised to conquer all. Defeated through sheer luck, his evil dissipated. 3,000 years later, the One Ring is discovered in the possession of a humble hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood). To save the world, from Sauron's return, the ring must be snuck back into the shadowy land of Mordor and thrown into the volcano where it was forged. On this quest, Frodo is accompanied by his friends Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin), Pippin Took (Billy Boyd) and Merry Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan), his mentor, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), and representatives of the free races of Middle-Earth: humans Strider (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sea Bean), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and elf Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom).
To get us up to speed, the picture begins with a history lesson that’ll knock you off your feet. The armies clashing seem immeasurably large. Sauron effortlessly radiates evil despite having no dialogue. You can feel the thousands of years of culture in the fighting styles, weapons and scenery. Middle-Earth feels real. The scale is immense, which makes director Peter Jackson’s decision to focus the plot on an ordinary hobbit a genius move. In a story with caverns so large our civilization could never dream of carving them, elven cities that seem to grow from the trees that surround them, seamless towers of black stone and all sorts of monsters, it would be easy for audiences to feel alienated. We’d all like to think that when push comes to shove we’d be great heroes but in reality, there’s no way. The best a tiny person like you or me could hope to do is stay brave, which is exactly Frodo’s role.
Several times throughout, we hear that “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” There couldn’t be anyone smaller than Frodo Baggins - except, perhaps, his friend to the end, Samwise. The hobbits are humble little people who have lived peaceful, simple lives free from adventure and are now thrust into a journey that will be the stuff of legends. Their joys are simple: warm meals, fields of brightly-colored vegetables and parties with friends & family. One particular scene that shows you just how small they are comes towards the end of the story. Sam and Frodo are traveling down a river. In the distance, they spot these enormous statues, the kind that would make the Statue of Liberty blush. Like us, they gaze at them in wonder, wondering who could’ve built them and who they represent. None of the other members of the Fellowship seem to give them more than a passing glance - and yet, these simple people prove themselves just as brave and reliable as the seasoned guardians they are traveling with. It’s awe-inspiring in so many ways.
By focusing on Frodo and his part of the journey, the film has a strong emotional core. The Fellowship of the Ring knows it has this time-tested story that’ll enchant audiences but before doing anything else, it made sure to get the basics right. Even if it hadn’t, it would’ve been an impressive production. Surrounding the inspirational battle of good vs. evil are incredible visuals, standout special effects and exciting action scenes. The film contains elements of horror in the form of its shadowy Ring Wraiths and scenes set in the deep mines of Moria. It’s got comedy to lighten the mood when necessary, chases so perfectly paced they should be shown in film school and battles that remain exciting whether they feature millions or a handful of fighters. There are so many great lines and iconic scenes you’ll love to quote it to your friends. The score by Howard Shore is this powerhouse that immediately sets up residence in your mind.
Though it ends in a "to be continued", The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the kind of movie you need to watch just to be part of the cultural conversation. Don't worry if you're weary of following trends; you would fall in love with this film even if you discovered it on your own. (Theatrical version on Blu-ray, April 26, 2022)

Could you walk me through the technical elements of the show?
“The Coachella main stage is iconic and massive. It has a giant video element and a significant lighting rig in the air. We wanted to bring in a floor package that would make our set really stand out and feel special and different from the other artists. We combined the house rig with our own floor package to transform the stage for our set.”
What challenges did you face with this project?
“Logistically, the biggest challenge was the number of artists that took part in our set. 88rising is a creative collective that includes many different artists. We had over 12 different artists perform their own sets over the span of two weekends. I knew I wanted to make every single artist feel like the headliner and to look different. Coachella is one of the biggest platforms in the music world; we wanted every artist to feel like we gave them the best show possible. 88rising has a massive international reach, we knew that we would be one of the most live streamed sets of the festival and we wanted every artist to have incredible production. We achieved this by really trying to highlight the diverse musical lineup. We showcased different elements of the production design to make every set feel different and visually unique even though we shared the production design across all the different artists. Lots of creative programming and long nights are what made this achievement possible!”
