Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back for a second season after an EXTREMELY strong freshman outing, and I’d like to talk a bit about an opportunity this show has, if not this season than at some point, to right some previous wrongs.
I’m speaking specifically of those done to Jolene Blalock, and to her character, T’Pol. Let’s dive in, under the cut! This’ll be a long one.
All of the classic 20th century Trek series (TOS through to the end of ENT) had a female actress and character they did not do especially right by either on or off screen. TOS had Grace Lee Whitney’s Yeoman Rand, and Roddenberry did... not always treat Nichelle Nichols appropriately. (Roddenberry had real problems with women at times.)
TNG had Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi, forced to constantly parade around in that cleavage-showing onesie and regularly being written into really gross and weird situations. It also had Gates McFadden’s Beverly Crusher; the show just very clearly had no fuckin’ clue what to do with an actress of McFadden’s caliber, and while she had some incredibly episodes (Remember Me is one of the best of the series) she was grossly underutilized.
DS9 fares the best here; Terry Farrell’s Jadzia Dax was generally given a lot to work with on-screen and her character was treated with respect and dignity. Off-screen, however, she was basically harassed into quitting the show by Rick Berman. (She spoke out in detail about this for the first time very extensively in the 2018 DS9 documentary What We Left Behind.)
VOY never knew what the fuck to do with Jennifer Lien’s Kes, and it must have been extraordinarily humiliating for her to be fired to free up money for Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine. Seven, of course, became a colossal fan favorite and ended up having some dynamite scripts and episodes, holding up a LOT of the back half of VOY... but we can’t pretend or ignore that she wasn’t brought onto the show because they wanted a hot piece of ass to pour into those awful shiny skintight uniforms. Or that she wasn’t given some weird and gross materiel to try and make work.
And then we come to ENT, and Jolene Blalock’s T’Pol.
Blalock had a thankless task. She was the best part of ENT, hands down, carrying that show on her back through four seasons. For this, she was constantly put in very tight, revealing outfits while the rest of the cast got to wear, you know, uniforms, and T’Pol was often written as either a ball-breaking bitch there to be shown up by the much more clever and emotional humans, or as nearly on the verge of an explosive meltdown herself. She had a whole plotline devoted to her addiction to space cocaine.
The absolute nadir was probably the time Rick Berman responded to a press question about upcoming episodes saying they had a “fun, sexy T’Pol episode” coming up... and that “fun and sexy episode” was her getting mind-raped by another Vulcan.
(Rick Berman was a piece of shit and the franchise prospered in the 90s in spite of, rather than because of, him.)
This isn’t to say she wasn’t in episodes of worth; ENT managed to right the ship in the third and fourth seasons with the involvement of the Reeves-Stevenses, and even before that she was rather the breakout star in the same way Jeri Ryan had been on VOY before her. (It probably helped that, with respect to the rest of the cast, Blalock was leagues ahead of them as an actor and it showed.) But she wasn’t treated well, and she hasn’t been shy in speaking up about it.
This was all two decades ago, of course. What’s happening now?
Well, Star Trek as a franchise has been making some effort to... sort of apologize. I yield to no man in my utter contempt for Star Trek: Picard; I consider it a creative failure on almost every level, yes, even Season 3. But something it resolutely did RIGHT is to revisit the franchises female characters and try and make amends for past wrongs. Seven of Nine was allowed to grow into this complex, weary, mature woman, a proper leading character, treated with respect by the narrative she was in. Ditto Deanna Troi. Beverly Crusher... okay, it’s kind of weaksauce to have the doctor man the weapons console and blow some ships the hell up and quip about it as a way of demonstrating “Doctor Crusher was cool then and she is cool now, dammit” but their hearts were in the right place even if their writerly talents weren’t up to the job.
Which brings us all the way back around to Strange New Worlds, and the opportunity this affords narratively.
A major ongoing theme of SNW is Ethan Peck’s Spock trying to find his feet within both Starfleet and within Vulcan society as he grapples with his mixed heritage. This has been a theme of the character since Leonard Nimoy’s day, of course, but Strange New Worlds is finding new ground to break; Nimoy’s Spock was more mature, more seasoned, largely understanding himself and possessed of a strong, inner self-confidence and unflappability. SNW is showing him BECOMING that man we saw in TOS. Spock always engaged with Kirk as an equal, even if Kirk technically outranked him, but he clearly engages with Chris Pike as a MENTOR, which is a wonderfully different dynamic.
You know who slots directly into this narrative space, these narrative themes? Motherfucking T’Pol, that’s who.
You cannot tell me that T’Pol would not have a burning, intense interest in the first product of a mixed human/Vulcan marriage. Spock is the shadow of what might-have-been for her and Trip Tucker; where their own mixed child, conceived in secrecy and violence as a weapon, did not survive, Spock lives and thrives.
T’Pol was an unwelcome, burdensome addition to the NX-01 Enterprise, needing to constantly claw and scratch to earn the respect, trust, and confidence of her peers, distrusted by the human authorities and regarded as a suspect borderline failure by her own government. Spock is a beloved member of the NCC-1701 Enterprises family almost from day one, the first Vulcan to go through the Academy, the first of his people to be “proper” Starfleet... and a huge part of the reason he’s able to be that is the work T’Pol put in when in the UEG Starfleet, and the colossal lift she preformed in reforming Vulcan society. The High Command in her day would not have countenanced Sarek and Amanda’s marriage, and would never have admitted Spock to the Academy.
Spock exists because of T’Pol.
T’Pol would know this. SPOCK would know this. There’s no way he has not read, extensively, of the Vulcan first officer of the NX-01 Enterprise. T’Pol, in turn, would have maintained an appropriately Vulcan interest in Spock’s career, his successes and failures. As an elder, respected Vulcan, she would likely have nudged it along to the extent she was capable. She would have mentored.
This all creates a ton of narrative space for T’Pol to appear on SNW, to have some really dynamite interactions with Spock and T’Pring, and more importantly for her to get the same “uplift” that Seven of Nine, Troi, and Crusher got in Picard, just... hopefully with a lot better writing behind it.
Maybe the writers aren’t interested in going in this direction. Maybe Blalock has zero interest in returning to the franchise. But dammit, this possibility should be explored and explored aggressively. It’s a golden opportunity to salvage some of the best parts of ENT, which was, yes, a very bad Star Trek show but had some things of worth in it, and to do right by another woman, and another character, the franchise wronged.

Until Dawn Fan Cast
Wanted to throw my hat into the ring of fan casting the new Until Dawn movie.
SPOILERS FOR UNTIL DAWN BELOW
(also just assume there might be bl**d & g*re depicted below)
I wouldn't be surprised if Kathryn Newton becomes the new scream queen so it makes sense for her to follow in Hayden Panettiere's steps. She was brilliantly versatile as her two characters in Freaky & has a natural charisma that would be great for Sam whose all-rounder character could fall flat in another actor's hands. Pretty much everyone agrees on Sam being one of the few left alive if not the Final Girl & I think Newton would excel in the role.
Mike is pretty conventional as a Final Guy - objectively attractive, resourceful alongside headstrong with a funny side. Tom Blyth displays these traits himself in his portrayal of the younger Coriolanus Snow in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes as well as a charisma that had many a watcher rooting for him despite portraying one of the most evil characters in The Hunger Games franchise. It would be interesting to see him tackle the complexities of Mike and even more fun to see him engage in the action scenes sure to be in the movie.
I never got into Stranger Things but from the limited amount I've seen Caleb McLaughlin is one of the best actors in the show. Matt is a contradiction to his own trope. He's a jock who is insecure in his relationship with Emily compared to how she feels about her ex, Mike, but also potentially wants to be seen as the hero. There's very much parallels that can be drawn between Lucas and Matt as well as enough differences and it would be really interesting to see how he would tackle the role.
Olivia Rodrigo is most famous for her music but her acting turns (admittedly in Disney & mv's, yes) have always been received pretty well. Emily is a hard character to cast especially when comparing to original actor Nichole Sakura since Emily is smart and resourceful whilst being blunt and - for a lack of a better word - wonderfully bitchy. There's a certain aura within the SNL performance for all-american bitch and music video of bad idea right? that gave me this feeling i can't shake that i want to see Rodrigo as the likely other Final Girl (I hope Emily survives to the end alongside Sam).
When Sweeney (as Cassie) was hiding in the bathroom in Euphoria, many people were desperate to see how she would fare in a traditional horror film - she plays terror great! maybe it's cheating to fancast her as Jess since she's played a promiscuously perceived blonde 'home-coming queen' type before but... if it ain't broke. I can't see a more perfect Jess to be honest.
according to luckyleftie on tiktok, Ashley's original horror trope was that of the stoner, rather than the academic - which clarifies the origins of the anxiety her character exhibits throughout. Personally, I'd love if they explored this in the film more (it's gonna be rated R after all). Sophia Lillis proved herself in the horror genre as Young Beverly in IT (2017) and would be really fun in the inquisitive/conclusion jumping Ashley. (Also I think she does resemble Ashley/Galadriel Stineman but that may just be me).
(Chris is deffo dying when Ashley doesn't let him into the house it's too potentially big of a scene to not do so) Tony Revolori is a funny actor and as self-proclaimed comedian of the group, I'd love to see his interpretation of Chris who pines after Ashley as well as how he could potentially approach the investigative chapter during Josh's 'prank.' Plus I loved him in Scream and wish we'd seen more screen time of him playing in the horror film.
Have you seen Hereditary? Point made.
in all seriousness, Alex Wolff is talented and plays awkward, yet charming alongside disturbed characters amazingly. Josh is quite an awkward guy ('party like p*rnstars' anyone?) and dealing with rapidly declining mental health as well as grief from his sisters' disappearance. Josh is a very complicated character whose actions cannot be justified but mental health cannot be ignored. Wolff could be a fantastic choice - especially if the mental health representation through Josh was updated with more advice and guidance from professionals.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading!! I'd love to hear if you agree (but pls don't be rude about it i put a lot of time into these edits/fancasting choices/individually crediting where i got the photos so if you hate it pls just move on) :)

Picture this. End of S5. Two days after that humiliating ambush on his turf. His turf!
They put him behind bars, for however insanely short time it took to figure out who exactly they were dealing with, but nobody puts Terry Silver in a cage and lives. He will get on that.
But what nags at him more is the feeling of betrayal. Kim Da Eun and her haughty favouritism. Chozen - a man he showered in hospitality and warmth. Daniel LaRusso, whom he had given every chance, Tory Nichols, whom he had gifted a championship, Kenny Payne, who he had mentored. Time itself.
John.
He had tried to fill the empty spaces time left before, but he always knew he was a romantic. All or nothing. Fake is worse than nothing, as Cheyenne showed. And maybe he'd been wrong? He felt that there were chances, paths not taken, with John and Daniel, with Da Eun, and he committed, because the screaming emptiness deafened him. Amends. Maybe the answer was in the past.
But all it left him with, again, were ashes.
So here he is, feral drunk, in some L.A. nightclub. Of course his revenge will sustain him, it always has. But the hollowness has to be filled with something, and music has always been a balm.
And there they are. Beloved. An honest to God thunderbolt to his heart.
Terry knows when things are real.
And he has no time for games. He corners his Beloved like a beast fighting to mate, all raw power and violence, but Beloved - they'll find out what that means soon enough, Terry has not a breath to waste - meets it with as much fire, maybe they've seen war as well. When he has them, he's still enraged.
"Where were you?" he spits, grip vice, this side of tender. "I needed you!"
Beloved raises their eyebrows. "Maybe you didn't deserve me yet."
Terry's response?
---
-"Screw deserving!"-
Terry snaps, leaning on his elbow sinking into the mattress in the neon-lit backroom of a crowded club, the bass of the music on the stage echoing against the sound proof walls covered in multicolored wallpaper, still hungering for more even after counting round three on a bed in a Beverly Hills nightspot he came to unwind in, fresh from behind bars and a meeting with his lawyers and attorney, the end goal being getting drunk, getting high, getting pumped for the epilogue of his battle dance. Honing his taste for blood in the electrical current of midnight and the blazing pump of humanity. In Vietnam, nearly half a century ago from now, the boys would smear each other with war paint before heading out into the bush, never to return again. Here, Terry had nothing but himself and rituals guided by instinct. There would be no talks of deserving here, only destiny. Fate. Chance. In the most unlikely of places. Lighting. Recognition. I know your face, whispers an oddly familiar voice from the crowd. Maybe love at first sight exists. It does. It really does. Maybe life could be an old silver-screen picture once in a lifetime, when two people meet, the credits say 'Fin' and devotion is forever.
-"You should've been born forty years ago!"- He adds, gritted teeth.
-"You should've been there when the world was fucking bullshit for decades and decades at a time and I was clawing from the gates of hell for someone's hand, practically paying these pieces of shit for an ounce of anything real!"- His fingers graze that vulnerable spot between the outline of your neck riddled with his bites and your warm cheek as he rubs, feverish, taking in patterns of softness, patterns of skin, every curve and outline, wanting to burn it all into memory so it never leaves, all the long years of his life flashing in front of his eyes, alongside every moment he wished contained you; an existence without falsehoods, pretending, holding back, without loneliness, self-denial and masks. An existence denied to him by the juxtaposition of time itself. -"You should've reached out from the darkness to hold this."- Eyes meet in the subdued haze of your shared nest secured by a locked door, and he removes his palm from your face, entwining his hand with yours, fingers squeezing each other like a salvation raft, fitting right. Fitting perfectly. Like one being. His breathing ragged from rage, desire and serenity all at once. Catharsis.
-"I'm holding it now, aren't I?"-
You remark, gentle and warm. Nuzzling into him, comfortably serene in a post-coital glow. Terry no longer hears the music from the top floor of the club. There's no thumping shaking the room and the ground. He hears a string of amorous aria of violins shaping reality.
---
I like to imagine this is the song he envisions in his head (x) @msfbgraves

Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on 'Star Trek,' dies at 89
July 31, 2022
Nichelle Nichols made history for her role as communications officer Lt. Uhura on Star Trek.
Actress and singer Nichelle Nichols, best known as Star Trek's communications officer Lieutenant Uhura, died Saturday night in Silver City, New Mexico. She was 89 years old.
"I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years," her son Kyle Johnson wrote on the website Uhura.com. "Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration."
Nichols was one of the first Black women featured in a major television series, and her role as Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original TV series was groundbreaking: an African American woman whose name came from Uhuru, the Swahili word for "freedom."
"Here I was projecting in the 23rd century what should have been quite simple," Nichols told NPR in 2011. "We're on a starship. I was head communications officer. Fourth in command on a starship. They didn't see this as being, oh, it doesn't happen til the 23rd century. Young people and adults saw it as now."
In 1968, Nichols made headlines when Uhura shared an intimate kiss with Captain James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner) in an episode called "Plato's Stepchildren." Their interracial kiss on the lips was revolutionary, one of the first such moments on TV.
Nichols was born Grace Dell Nichols in a Chicago suburb where her father was the mayor. She grew up singing and dancing, aspiring to star in musical theater. She got her first break in the 1961 musical Kicks and Co., a thinly veiled satire of Playboy magazine. She was the star of the Chicago stock company production of Carmen Jones, and in New York performed in Porgy and Bess.
'To me, the highlight and the epitome of my life as a singer and actor and a dancer/choreographer was to star on Broadway," she told NPR in 2011, adding that as her popularity on Star Trek grew, she was beginning to get other offers. "I decided I was going to leave, go to New York and make my way on the Broadway stage."
Nichols said she went to Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, and announced she was quitting. "He was very upset about it. And he said, take the weekend and think about what I am trying to achieve here in this show. You're an integral part and very important to it."
The Two-Way
For MLK Day: 'Lt. Uhura' On How Rev. King Told Her To Stay On 'Star Trek'
So that weekend, she went to an NAACP fundraiser in Beverly Hills and was asked to meet a man who said he was her number one fan: Martin Luther King, Jr.
"He complimented me on the manner in which I'd created the character. I thanked him, and I think I said something like, 'Dr. King, I wish I could be out there marching with you.' He said, 'no, no, no. No, you don't understand. We don't need you ... to march. You are marching. You are reflecting what we are fighting for.' So, I said to him, 'thank you so much. And I'm going to miss my co-stars.'"
"His face got very, very serious," she recalled. "And he said, 'what are you talking about?' And I said, 'well, I told Gene just yesterday that I'm going to leave the show after the first year because I've been offered... And he stopped me and said: 'You cannot do that.' I was stunned. He said, 'don't you understand what this man has achieved? For the first time, we are being seen the world over as we should be seen. He says, do you understand that this is the only show that my wife Coretta and I will allow our little children to stay up and watch.' I was speechless."
Nichols returned to the series, which lasted until 1969. She also reprised her famous role in six subsequent feature films, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where Uhura was promoted to commander.
For years, Nichols also helped diversify the real-life space program, helping to recruit astronauts Sally Ride, Judith Resnik, Guion Bluford, and others. And she had her own science foundation, Women in Motion.
"Many actors become stars, but few stars can move a nation," tweeted actress Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on TV in the 1970s. "Nichelle Nichols showed us the extraordinary power of Black women and paved the way for a better future for all women in media. Thank you, Nichelle. We will miss you."
George Takei, who costarred on Star Trek as helmsman Hikaru Sulu tweeted: "I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise," her wrote. "For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend."
He also posted a photo of his longtime friend, both of them flashing the Vulcan greeting, and these words: "We lived long and prospered together."

Comedian David Baddiel hosts a podcast in which he was told the story of an alleged romance with singer David Bowie while he and Mick Jagger were on holiday in Mustique. "This woman was sixteen at the time, and Bowie would have been in his forties," Baddiel said. But was Bowie really in the habit of seducing teenagers when he was middle-aged? It appears so. Two women who were under the age of consent when they claim they slept with Bowie have come out. Lori Mattix, a young black girl who had a liasion with him at age 14, explained she never thought he was a pedophile, just that he would "f***k anything." He had an open marriage with wife Angie, who he married in 1970. She wrote in her autobiography, "David made a virtual religion of slipping the lance of love into almost everyone around him." Some lovers they shared, others they did not. In 1972, he was with Cyrinda Fox, a 19-year-old model. Bowie has been described by some friends as a "sex addict."
Lori Mattix: *What I remember most about the E Club was Bowie. I met him when he was doing the Spiders from Mars tour. I had not yet turned 15 and he wanted to take me to his hotel room. I was still a virgin and terrified. He had hair the color of carrots, no eyebrows, and the whitest skin imaginable. I grabbed on to [DJ and club co-owner] Rodney Bingenheimer and said I was with him. So we all just hung out and talked. I had probably kissed boys by that point, but I wasn't ready for David Bowie. Next time Bowie was in town, though, maybe five months later, I got a call at home from his bodyguard, a huge black guy named Stuey. He told me that David wanted to take me to dinner. Obviously, I had no homework that night. Fuck homework. My father was deceased, and I wasn't spending a lot of time at school anyway. I said that I would like to go, but I wanted to bring my friend. She was dying to sleep with him. I figured she would sleep with him while I got to hang out and have fun.
So we sat at this corner table in a private room. Stuey rolled enormous blunts. We then got to the Beverly Hilton and all went up to Bowie's enormous suite. I found myself more and more fascinated by him. Bowie excused himself and left us in this big living room with white shag carpeting and floor-to-ceiling windows. Stuey brought out champagne and hash. We were getting stoned when, all of a sudden, the bedroom door opens and there is Bowie in this red and orange and yellow kimono. He asked me to come with him, and walked me through his bedroom and into his bathroom, where he dropped his kimono. He got into the tub, already filled with water, and asked me to wash him. Of course I did. Then he escorted me into the bedroom and de-virginized me. He then had a threesome with me and [Sable Starr] and it was my first threesome. Me and [Sable] were both fucked up. I saw David many times after that, for the next ten years. *
Dana Gillespie also claimed she had sex with Bowie when she was 14, but he was 17 at the time. She said they slept together after meeting him when he performed at the Marquee in Soho in 1964.
Bowie would later face rape allegations in 1987 from 30-year-old Wanda Nichols. She filed a criminal complaint and claimed the British entertainer may have exposed her to AIDS and asked a judge to order the singer to take a test. She testified before a Dallas County grand jury, however the judge refused to indict Bowie to insufficient evidence.

Survival of the Blondest

Yasmine leans against the house’s back wall, exhaling. Her gaze strays to the full moon, bathing the yard’s long flowerbeds in silvery-white.
She’ll never understand why she said yes when Hawk invited her to go ghost-hunting with their friends. The paranormal hotspot in question was some abandoned Beverly Hills mansion, urban legends swimming around the decrepit place like fucking piranhas.
Yasmine remembers watching Hawk pry open a boarded bay window and scoffing at the absurdity of it all. Why did she agree to this? If this was a movie, she’d be the first to die.
Instead, she was the only one who made it out unscathed.
Yasmine never thought she'd end up a "final girl." How was she to know some "harmless Halloween fun" would end in her friends getting fucked up one-by-one AND her having an uncomfortable identity crisis, all in one night?
My submission for the final CKHalloween22 prompt, "Final Girl"! Also counts for "Monstrous Transformations" and "Environment of Fear" hehe
