Who was the creator of the apparatus that was used in filming the famous meat hook scene? That would be Dottie Pearl and Bob Burns. Together, the night before we were to film, as I recall, they stayed up into the wee hours getting IT ready, but how did they do it? Imagine if you will, a bikini bottom made of Parachute strapping. Now imagine needing to conceal the bikini gadgetry under some red corduroy short-shorts and backless bathing suit. Now imagine you need the girl wearing the apparatus to be hanging, dangling from a meat hook, that must hold her weight of 110 pounds, and simultaneously making sure no meat hook actually touches her bare back.
The idea was that the audience sees that meat hook coming ominously close to her back, how do we accomplish this safely? You add another piece of parachute strapping about 9-10 inches, sewn with great care to the top back of the parachute strapping in the back of the bikini. The strap was hidden underneath until The Scene of the drop shot. It had to be hidden inside, out of site until the actual drop by Leatherface as he struggles to hold on to the screaming, writhing, hysterical young woman, who’s trying with all her might to escape this impending terrifying disaster.
Next challenge: You need something on the end of the attached strap, something incredibly strong. They decided a large steel parachute ring, that could be guided by someone crouched below, spotting her, as Leatherface waits for his cue to drop her, would be perfect. The steel ring Must Go over the hook and hold her weight. No room for mistakes.
Another clever part of Pam’s meat hook apparatus was Dottie sewing in the twisted legs of panty hose that had great strength and could be pinned underneath the front edges of Pam’s tiny backless bathing suit top, hidden underneath, which helped to keep the apparatus and suit together, long enough to get the shot.
Yes, they used pantyhose, which btw, only became the rage in the early seventies. Fact. It was for all women, freedom… from garter belts. Yes, we actually wore hose, individually attached to garter belts up until then! A little history: In 1974, actress Julie Newmar successfully filed a patent for “Pantyhose with shaping band for cheeky derriere relief”, a garment innovation made famous through the costume she designed in the 1960s for her role as Catwoman in the TV show Batman.
So, when Pam is hanging on the meat hook, held up only by the strapping and stainless steel loop, what happens? Right, that’s when they added lots of foam cushioning, where 100% of the weight inevitably goes. 😬 My sincere thanks for that!
I vividly remember, Tobe calling cut, and looking out to a line of cast and crew, mouths aghast at what they’d just witnessed. You could hear a pin drop. It seems there was a deep collective sigh. We did it. We got the shot that I later heard some one refer to it as “the money shot”, which at the time went right over my head. What’s a money-shot? For me, that was the moment when it crossed my mind, “Hey, maybe we have something here.”
We began filming that scene around 9 AM and finished in time to enjoy our caterer, Sally Nicholaou’s, delicious lunch. It was fast. The awful part? The blood they used was karo syrup based. There are 3 seconds of blood dripping into the bucket below Pam’s dangling feet, maybe only 2 seconds. I Hope It Was Worth It!! Think Texas heat, Karo-syrup, and flies, plenty of flies. UGH. Dottie and I ran outside together, and landed at the windmill, me ripping off everything as Dottie took the water hose and sprayed me forever, until I was finally free of all remnants of sticky-icky karo-syrup, parachute strapping, shorts, bathing suit, et-al. LUNCH!!! ♥️🪝
Thank you, Dottie Pearl. Thank you, Bob Burns. Dorothy J. Pearl - January 19, 1950 - July 22, 2018 (age 68 years) Robert Lewis Burns Jr. November 24, 1950 – April 3, 2015 (age 65 years)

Ask Game/ Tag Game
tagged by @taralkariel. cheers!
are you named after someone? Not as far as I'm aware, but I share a middle name with my mother, if that counts for anything.
what sports have you played? Of my own volition: I have competed in powerlifting and strongman competitions. They're fun!
do you use sarcasm? I suppose I do.
what is the first thing you notice about people? Their presence? I mean, physically. I notice that they are there to be perceived.
what’s your eyes color? ID says "GRAY" (yeah, with an A)
scary movies or happy endings ? both. together. I'm a big fan of ghost stories, and they don't necessarily have to be scary ghosts.
any talent? No. I consider most things I do well to be skills that I had to practice over time.
what are your hobbies? strength training, reading, walking (w/dog! see below), and I like a good adventure video game I can sink hours into
do you have any pets? Yes! My best friend Moose (dog, Labrador Retriever/Great Dane) and the Kitten Commandos, Jim Meowrita and Timeowthy Dugan (they're 2 already!).
how tall are you? 1.67m/5 ft 6 in
dream job? I'd love to put furniture together for a living. I have a good time with a flat pack delivery. But I'm satisfied with what I currently do as a mechanical engineer in commercial aerospace (not Boeing, I promise). It pays the bills so I can mess about with writing fic and playing games.

OCCUPATION: Salesclerk, Melvald’s General Store ABILITIES: Strong intuition, dogged determination, fiercely protective WEAKNESSES: Prone to bouts of high anxiety, no paternal support system, chain-smoker
Even before her youngest son disappears, Joyce Byers gives the impression of a woman barely holding on. Raising two boys as a single parent means that money is tight, and what little she makes working at the general store barely covers the bills. Joyce is messy and scattered, dwarfed in clothes far too ample for her slight frame. There’s a quiver in her voice when she speaks. But Joyce has surprising reserves of courage that carry her through, especially after young Will vanishes. In the face of overwhelming odds, she knows in her core that she’ll be reunited with her boy if only she continues to search for him.
“She’s certainly not perfect in any way,” says Winona Ryder. “I think she carries a lot of guilt around. There’s a lot of people out there struggling, a lot of single parents. She works Christmases. She works Thanksgiving… Her husband left when Will was about five—just took off and never paid any child support.”
When thinking about actors who could embody Joyce, casting director Carmen Cuba immediately suggested Ryder—not only because of her strong connection to films from the era that inspired the series, but also because of her incredible talent. She’s someone who can easily project strength and vulnerability simultaneously.
In shaping Joyce, Ryder looked to real life and to cinema history, putting together “a little collage of inspirations” that included Marsha Mason’s work in 1983’s Max Dugan Returns and the 1977 film Audrey Rose. She also drew from Ellen Burstyn’s Oscar-winning performance in the 1974 release Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. She was looking to portray “the sort of real desperation to just put food on the table and to just get by.”

Round 4: Match 48
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two pictures of gulls. The left is an ivory gull standing on snow. The right is a red-legged kittiwake with a chick. /End ID]
The ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea) is a mid-sized gull that has a circumpolar distribution around the Arctic. They typically measure 40-43 cm (16-17 in) in length and 108-120 cm (42-47 in) in wingspan. They have a more pigeon-like shape than other gulls. Their plumage are completely white, and they have black legs and a thick blue bill with yellow tip. They feed on fish, crustaceans, rodents, eggs, and small chicks. They have been known to follow polar bears and other predators to scavenge on the remains of their kills. Because of their declining population, possibly due to illegal hunting or to decline in sea ice, they are listed as near threatened by the IUCN.
The red-legged kittiwake (Rissa brevirostris) is a small gull that breeds on islands in the Bering Sea and spends the winter at sea. They typically measure 35-39 cm (14-15 in) in length and 84-92 cm (33-36 in) in wingspan. They have white underparts and head, dark grey back and wings with black tips, short yellow bill, and red legs. They feed on fish, squid, and invertebrates. They are named after the color of their legs and the sound of their call, which resembles a long "kit-ti-wake." They are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.

For dhd: Charles and the shade “ I haven’t been resting. I can’t sleep“
Charles McNider hadn’t expected to see the Shade again after he left for Indiana. Of course, he hadn’t expected to see anyone after being trapped in the Shadowlands--not Patrick Dugan or Starman or his wife again. After years of walking through an endless void, he had been elated to hear any other voice, even if it had not been the same amount of time for him as for them, a calculation that he dared not think on too long.  Still, he had expected to leave the Shade, and all of that side of his past behind him once more.
Finding the Shade waiting in the hotel restaurant sipping a cup of tea was still fairly high on the list of things Charles did not expect--and the list was long. “Charles,” the Shade said with too much warmth. “Join me?” Charles sat, and a waitress brought over a plate of toast and a menu. “Richard,” he said. “Good morning.” “You know, you can call me Dickie,” The Shade insisted. “Really.” “I do know,” Charles agreed, and ordered the pancakes. “So, did you get bored of Blue Valley after all?” “Of course not. It’s not exactly a quaint little town, but at least it has newsies, so I think I’ll stay, for now at least.” “Then why are you at this hotel in…” “Brookfield,” the Shade filled in promptly. “And don’t tell me it’s because they have good tea.” “And no devon cream, either,” the Shade sighed. “Very well, I suppose I do owe you a bit of truth, then. I… it wasn’t that I was worried, of course. Merely… concerned that there may be linger effects from that unfortunate detour I inadvertently sent you on.” “And?” Charles prompted. “Well, are there?”
Charles considered. “I’m not resting well.  I can’t sleep.” He backpedaled. “Not in the sense that I can’t, just that it’s deeply unpleasant.” “I see.” The Shade spread butter on a so-called English Muffin. “Not surprising, I suppose. I did say I was sorry, didn’t I?” “I know it wasn’t your intention. And you did save my life. Any hard feelings I may have had…” The Shade smiled a bit too widely. “I am glad to hear that. But no, oh, I don’t know, sudden manifestations of powers, fainting spells, deathlike symptoms?” “Not yet, though I’m sure if I do you’ll be the first to know, and I’ll be second.” Charles sighed. “I just don’t know what exactly to do now. If my wife… has moved on…” “I could explain, if you like,” “No,” Charles said pointedly. “I’ll do that.” “You might… call her, before appearing on her porch,” the Shade offered. “I’m told that can be a bit unsettling.” “Not by someone you listened too, clearly,” Charles said as the waitress returned with a truly appalling number of pancakes. “Yes, well, it’s different for me, no one really thinks I’m dead these days.” the Shade shrugged, slipping two hundred dollar bills into the receipt booklet. “You look better, Charles. I’ll, erm, drop by to see you again sometime soon. If that’s not a bother.” “Would it matter if it was?” Charles asked. “No, not really.” The Shade stood, donning his hat. “Take care, doctor.” “You too….Dickie.”
