**Mahoning Memories** Did you know that our very 1st show as partners together was a double bill of Guardians of the Galaxy & Planes 2?!? We poured everything into the planning and promotion to the locals and beyond.. Live music, free comics for everyone, costume contests each night, the works! We walked the streets all week handing out flyers. Hit every shopping center - running between cars & tucking promos under every wiper.. We were certain that we would get a crowd that would really wow Jeff and the staff.. That Friday brought in 7 cars. Saturday was 6. And the bubble burst. After everything, we barely even made enough to pay for the electricity.. But, out of that heartbreak came the plot twist of fate that would set us apart from all the rest.. We decided as a team to throw caution to the wind and vow to exclusively show classic films on 35mm from that day forward.. When your back is against the wall and you have nothing to lose.. Greatness Grows. See our story: https://www.amazon.com/At-Drive-Jeff-Mattox/dp/B07KZ4H87P (These are photos of my first visit to The Mahoning with Matt. Taylor Swift Celebrates Nashville Roots and the Power of Pop at Nissan Stadium
Swift's hometown extravaganza features snakes, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, and tons of other spectacles
By THE SPIN   AUG 27, 2018
Tumblr media

Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour is supposed to be the ultimate expression of the singer’s new persona, a flashy display of the fresh-out-of-fucks-to-give attitude she debuted last year after declaring "the old Taylor” dead. But really, Swift’s Saturday stop at Nissan Stadium was a celebration of both the old and the new. With a set list that reached all the way back to 2006, it was a culmination of the lessons, lyrics and fans that have helped Swift reach her most confident, carefree (and successful) self, which — as she stated repeatedly from the enormous X-shaped stage — never would've happened without Nashville.
“I moved to Nashville when I was 13,” the singer said after opening her set with back-to-back performances of “... Ready for It?” and “I Did Something Bad.” (The Spin could feel the heat from the pyro, even though we were a couple hundred feet away.) “I remember my first memory of this stadium. My mom and I got tickets to CMA Fest. ... I just remember thinking that that’s the biggest place that anyone could ever play.
“Years later I was lucky enough to actually play a 15-20 minute set at CMA Fest in this stadium, and I was like, ‘That’s it, that’s the peak, that’s the best it’s ever gonna get,’ ” Swift continued. “So tonight is the first time I’m headlining this stadium, and I’m so grateful, you guys. You have no idea — this means so much to me. It means so much to my family and friends. This is our hometown show.”
Since her stadium debut years ago, Swift and her team have perfected the art of massive production, right down to the tiny symbolic details. The digital graphics that flashed across the several-stories-high video screen were impeccable, the fireworks and towers of flame were plentiful, the dancers and backup singers were diverse and mesmerizing, and there were So. Many. Giant. Snakes. (OK, so there were only three giant snakes, but that is three more than any other stadium show we've seen has had. It was hilarious.) There were even two gondola-like contraptions (one of which was in the shape of a snake, naturally) to carry Swift between the main stage and two smaller stages.
The green sequined jacket Swift wore during the acoustic portion of the show — during which she played guitar and sang “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” and “Better Man” (a CMA- and Grammy-winning song that Swift wrote and Little Big Town recorded) — was decorated with a glittery black-and-gold patch made specifically for the Nashville date. The confetti that rained down during the Great Gatsby-meets-High School Musical finale of “Call It What You Want” and a mashup of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” with “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” consisted of tiny tissue-paper versions of a Taylor Swift newspaper. Even Nashville’s inescapable growth got a shoutout — as Swift sat down at the piano, we noticed that the towers holding the massive stacks of speakers over her head resembled construction cranes. At that point, she paused to note how the city keeps changing.
Tumblr media

“One of the most obvious indications of time passing, for me, is Nashville,” she said. “Because every time I come home, something’s different, something new is being built — we got another cool restaurant, another couple thousand people that moved here. Because, basically, I’m sure you’ve noticed this too: In the last 15 years everyone else has realized that Nashville is just the best place in the world.”
After performing “Don’t Blame Me” and a “Long Live”/“New Year’s Day” medley solo at the piano, the love letter to Music City continued. “[Nashville] is the most important city I’ve ever been in in my entire life. And it’s the place where … I wrote the song that I haven’t played in a very, very long time. And it was a song that really changed my life. I think that it would only be fitting to play it tonight.”
Then, Swift delivered country music’s most magical moment of the weekend, surprising the ecstatic audience with a visit from Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. The couple joined in on — you guessed it — Swift’s 2006 country hit, “Tim McGraw.” Tens of thousands of fans lost their shit. The woman sitting behind us started sobbing. Our ears are still ringing from the applause.
While Swift’s simultaneously endearing and tongue-in-cheek recognition of her career's ups and downs may have taken center stage, it was the small nods to her own personal growth that were the most satisfying to see. Swift's band and army of dancers and singers were diverse in size, race and age. And unlike so many other stadium shows, where the opening acts take a very (very very very) distant backseat to the main attraction, Swift's show featured hit factory Charli XCX and former Fifth Harmony singer and VMA Artist of the Year Camila Cabello — both women of color — in beefy opening slots.
Tumblr media
Charli XCX at Nissan Stadium PHOTO: LANCE CONZETT
Charli XCX came off as your hyper, party-obsessed BFF from the future, and Cabella's Cuban-influenced set was fun and theatrical while also showcasing her stunning, rich voice. It wouldn't be surprising to see Cabella hold down her own stadium tour someday. The two singers returned to the stage to help Swift out during a colorful, confetti-filled performance of “Shake It Off” (cue the snakes!) and all three took time to note how honored and empowered they felt by the stacked bill — "Not one, not two, but three badass women on one stage,” said Charli XCX.
In the past, those slots have gone to white men. The openers for her 2015 North American 1989 Tour were Shawn Mendes and Vance Joy. (Rae Morris played one date, and Haim played several, including the Bridgestone Arena shows.) And in 2013-14, Ed Sheeran, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Casey James and Austin Mahone, among others, took turns starting the show for the Red Tour's North American dates.
Even off the stage, Swift has taken meaningful steps. In March, after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., she posted on Instagram that she made a donation to the March for Our Lives campaign, saying, “I’m so moved by the Parkland High School students, faculty, by all families and friends of victims who have spoken out, trying to prevent this from happening again.” And in April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Swift reportedly made a “generous donation” to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
Much of the initial criticism of Swift’s dramatic return to the public eye in 2017 was focused on how the singer has neglected to take a stance on anything remotely political — something the Scene's own Megan Seling has noted. It's encouraging to see Swift counter that with action.
Sure, Swift is still obsessed with her image. The show started with audio clips of things newscasters and critics have said over the years (including Perez Hilton alleging that Swift was responsible for his suspension from Twitter — LOL). But it appears as though she's at least starting to think about what other messages she can send to her legions of fans. Big platforms — whether they're the kind that spout flames and giant snakes or not — can be used to make a big difference, and it's heartening to see a homegrown megastar turn her attention toward their power.

Democrats Attempt to Pass Stricter Gun Laws While Republicans Draft Looser Legislation
By Sophia Gengaro, Villanova University Class of 2022
April 9, 2021
Tumblr media
After recent mass shooting in Georgia and Colorado, many legislators are working on expanding federal gun control laws. However, at the same time, other lawmakers are attempting to loosen gun control laws. Since the federal government is largely controlled by Democrats, lawmakers that are trying to make gun control laws less strict are attempting to change laws locally, as opposed to federally. [5]
Currently, the federal government is in the process of enacting a major change in gun control laws for the first time in a few decades now that the Democrats control the House of Representatives in the Senate. This month, the House of Representatives passed two bills regarding gun control. The bills “require background checks on all firearms sales and transfers and allow an expanded 10-day review for gun purchases”. [3] The first bill, regarding background checks, intends to ensure that background checks are required for all gun sales, especially private and online sales, as well as sales at gun shows. Purchases made in these environments often bypass background checks, and the bill intends to prevent that from happening. [3] The second bill, which was introduced by Representative Jim Clyburn, would extend background checks an entire week, from three days to ten days. Jim Clyburn introduced this bill to the House of Representatives following a shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. The shooter, who killed nine people, only had a three-day background check. Clyburn believes more extensive background checks will prevent guns from landed in the wrong individuals’ hands. [3]
The two bills still need to be passed in the Senate, which will be more difficult considering that the Senate is split 50-50.
In Tennessee, a bill that was passed by the Senate this month allows for people to carry a gun, regardless of whether or not they have a permit. Senate Bill 765, which coincides with House Bill 786, “allows any law-abiding adult who is legally eligible to obtain a carry permit to carry a handgun without first having to obtain government permission”. [3] The intention of these bills, according to Republican lawmakers, is to reiterate the right to self-defense. Additionally, many lawmakers and citizens of the United States who are pro Second Amendment believe that strict permit laws violate the Second Amendment, and bills such as H.B. 786 / S.B. 765 will reinstate the purpose of the Second Amendment. [1]
In Montana, Governor Greg Gianforte signed recently signed a similar bill into law. H.B. 102 was written with the intention of “[enhancing] the safety of people by expanding their legal ability to provide for their own self-defense by reducing or eliminating government-mandated places where only criminals are armed and where citizens are prevented from exercising their fundamental right to defend themselves and others” [2]. This bill is similar to the Tennessee bills H.B. 786 and S.B. 765 in the sense that they are attempting to remove restrictions on who can carry guns and where guns are allowed. H.B. 102 allows for concealed firearms in most places, excluding universities, the state capitol, and a few other similar environments. [5]

Republic Steel Corp. Sign Shop
Warren, O. - In the days before vinyl graphics and digital printers, sign makers used a brush, One Shot sign paint, and a steady hand. Republic Steel had a sign shop in their Warren works that hand lettered safety signs, trucks and locomotives among other things. Their work could be seen at the Warren plant, as well as the Youngstown mills, Niles works and Newton Falls plant. The photo below was taken by Rick Rowlands of Youngstown Steel Heritage Foundation during an auction of former Republic/WCI/RG Steel equipment as the new owner was preparing to scrap the mill. I wish that sign shop sign could have been preserved damn it, it is a testament to the dying art form of hand lettered signs. And basic steelmaking.
By night I am a guerrilla historian, but day I am a mild mannered project manager for a commercial sign company. I enjoy the work, it pays the bills and lets me travel, but the projects that really excite me are the ones that involve a real live sign painter. It is truly an art form that is dying before my eyes. These people (wall dogs and letterheads they call themselves) are incredibly difficult to find. I am up to the challenge of finding a painter when a customer requests it, I feel like I am doing something to preserve the craft. Some of the work can be emulated with a vinyl plotter and a decent graphic designer but it is just not the same.
Case in point: the hard hats below. I had been looking for the man that lettered the 35 or 40 years of service anniversary hard hats that were given to Republic Steel employees in the Youngstown district.
Thanks to this website, and the power of the internet, I was able to locate the man who is not only still alive, but still practicing his craft!! I was excited just to talk to him for a moment, but when he agreed to letter a hard hat for me like the ones he used to do down the mill I was ecstatic. This is now one of my prize possessions, one that I will keep for the rest of my life. Hand lettered and signed by the man himself, Jack Tolson.
Since my time working in the steel industry consisted of a half a shift cutting tube rounds down the former Youngstown Sheet & Tube Brier Hill works, I didn't think it would be right to ask him to put 30 years of service on the hat. Instead, he included The Rust Jungle logo, which is a tribute to the YST hook and bucket logo. He was also kind enough to put on some origioanl Republic Steel, WCI Steel, and RG Steel stickers on it that he still had from his time down there. Jack worked there that long, starting in the 50's in the galvanized department. He's a great guy with great stories to tell. I must have been at his house for an hour and a half shooting the shit with him.
"Sign Painter - Paint Shop"
When I heard they were tearing down the blast furnace, I frantically starting calling the demo company in an effort to purchase the remaining signage in the mill. I had seen the hand painted signs on the exterior, assumed the same guy that lettered the hats painted them, and was on a mission to see the preserved.
As I was offering cash, the contractor allowed me access to the entire blast fce. side of the mill. My requests since that day requesting a quote to purchase the signs have gone unanswered. I am only looking to buy a small amount of scrap metal, not tons, so the sons of bitches don't have time to reply. To hell with em.
I planned on donating most of the signs to the Youngstown Steel Heritage Foundation to be displayed, but to no avail. I did photograph them, and they can't sell that to the Chinese as scrap. See below for some examples of Jack's handiwork.
"DANGER - DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF CANNON" This safety sign was referencing an air cannon that would keep migratory birds out of some holding pond. It also did a great job of keeping residents of SW Warren awake. It was some EPA regulation. The pond is gone, the cannon is gone, the BOF side of the mill is gone, but this sign Jack painted remians.
"TRUCKS OVER 5 TON - STOP - STAY ON R.R. TRACK" -  This sign was just before the hot metal bridge that ran over Main Ave. that would take molten iron from the blast fce. side over to basic oxygen furnace. The bridge is to the right, the cold blast furnace peeks up to the left.
"MAHONING VALLEY DISTRICT - FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION" - I found this years ago inside a boxcar across Pine Ave. from Republic. Apparently it referred to a competition between the fire departments in different Republic mills in the Steel Valley.
Another example of Jack's work.
So that's it. Even if the demolition company wouldn't sell me the signs and is content to let them go to the scrap heap, I still have a piece of our history.

If 2015 was the year Justin Trudeau made a first name for himself, part of the surprise was how easy it was. Partly it’s because Pierre Trudeau’s legacy is, by now, tucked away safely in the annals of history: The youngest Canadians who had a chance to vote for the Liberals when he was running the party are now 53. Partly it was that Justin Trudeau had lots of help from his adversaries in the first-naming department: Both Stephen Harper and Tom Mulcair decided it would be superclever to spend the three-month campaign calling him by his first name, as though he had not earned the simple honorific of comm 12. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=LlK1AcXr&id=9B6F4646928B30BE59EA410134339BE6B09AB509&thid=OIP.LlK1AcXr2uVQrWeTHDHvkwHaD4&q=justin+trudeau+photos&simid=608003320760239313&selectedindex=288&mode=overlay&first=1 13. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=TllXjRzl&id=9EB8E2A08014A860D7F1AE6D13FD2E0A752B17AB&thid=OIP.TllXjRzl27QLOdvZfwztIQHaFj&q=justin+trudeau+photos&simid=607990478805076857&selectedindex=291&mode=overlay&first=1 14. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=ztF3uqRn&id=6B91F10225BB50BCE3BECF1E6211F63EDE559ED1&thid=OIP.ztF3uqRnkcfwilsZ4bGOMwHaFD&q=justin+trudeau+photos&simid=608030903044017911&selectedindex=298&mode=overlay&first=1 15. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=T3zrrCte&id=77EA18D047A6D5DE4EEAB5E03EED956217B35B26&thid=OIP.T3zrrCteVChag7ADHOjWSQHaD4&q=justin+trudeau+photos&simid=608018387492799137&selectedindex=304&mode=overlay&first=1 16. http://debatepost.com/2018/04/07/its-a-shame-for-canada-when-cnn-and-bbc-make-fun-of-canadas-leader/ 17. WORDS: MIRANDA KNOX PHOTO: LIMA CHARLIE
There’s no denying that wherever charismatic Mickey Smith goes, people – and Peckham – seem to follow. As founder of the hugely successful CLF Art Cafe and the South London Soul Train, one of London’s most popular club nights, he’s been a fundamental force in shaping the now-iconic Bussey Building into what it is today.
Accurately dubbed by a friend as a “creative arts entrepreneur”, it seems there’s nothing Mickey can’t do. And now, he’s made what he considers to be a crucial move by opening his newest venture, the CLF Art Lounge & Roof Garden, located on Station Way just a stone’s throw from the entrance to Peckham Rye Station.
The live music venue and bar is open until 2021, when the building will be pulled down to make way for the new Peckham Station Square.
Mickey, who works with his partner Saija Kamarainen, says: “I’m really quite proud of it – me and my missus designed the inside and the roof with some help and it’s turned out beautifully. It’s my favourite project I’ve done so far. It was a really important step to open a new venue outside the [Bussey] building, and start moving in a direction where we have 100% control over everything.
“The [Station Way] building will be torn down in two years but we’ll run this until then. Then as part of Peckham [Station] Square we have a guaranteed space that we’ll be moving into after that.
“For me, it’s all about building the long term. We’ll be running the Art Lounge as part of the square – there’ll be live music and entertainment, and all the things we do now anyway.”
The bar is described as an “oasis of calm in the heart of Peckham” – a completely different vibe to the bustle and buzz of the permanently sold-out South London Soul Train.
“It’s a bit more grown up,” Mickey says. “I’m 52 now and I’m a young soul, but if someone asks me what my ideal night out would be, it’s a table, a bottle of bourbon and a jazz band.
“It’s a great place to take a date, or to go for your 30th where everything is thought of and you know you’ll be looked after. It’s a place for adults to sit down and relax and enjoy live music, food and art. It’s a seated environment where it’s more about the headspace than raving and ‘how much alcohol can I get into my body!’”
Music is a huge aspect of every project Mickey throws his energy into, and his connections mean a varied and talented musical line up.
“Music was huge to my family growing up,” he says. “My father had a collection of music that most people would give their left arm for now. If a Bob Marley album came into our house it was just like Christmas Day and everyone got round the gramophone.
“Here, we’re bringing a lot of world-class artists in, who you can see in a room of 60 to 80 people, sitting down – it’s an intimate venue.”
All of this can be enjoyed in a relaxed, chilled-out atmosphere. Mickey adds: “You’re right next to the station, which frames one side, and it’s completely decked with a weatherproof pergola so we can use the space all year round.
“It’s table service, and quadraphonic sound with four speakers around the pergola. There’s a live stage on the roof and a jerk pan so we can do proper Caribbean food in the summer.”
The food is currently cooked up by Di Flava. “We didn’t want to do scallops with a bit of pea sauce and all that bulls**t,” Mickey laughs. “We’ve got an authentic Caribbean menu including curried goat marinated for hours, with a sprinkling of rum and all these special spices and seasonings. It’s absolutely gorgeous.”
Mickey’s road to where he is now didn’t start in SE15. Born and raised in Huddersfield, he travelled the world, also living in Hong Kong before settling in Peckham about 15 years ago.
“The first place I lived was on Bellenden Road above the Crossroads Cafe. It was brilliant. I got to know most of the people downstairs and the shops on the road. I’d get up in the morning, put the stereo on and scream at the people across the road, and they would scream back – being a northerner, I like that! The one thing I loved was the feeling of community. It felt like there was lots of potential to do things.”
In 2003 he set up the Chronic Love Foundation – a commercial humanitarian company designed to make positive global change through creative projects – with Marque Gilmore, David Malone and Daige Mahone. Since 2005 it has been run solely by Mickey and Saija.
In 2007 he met Peckham Vision’s Eileen Conn, who drafted him in to help save the CIP House – now known as the Bussey Building – where he opened the CLF Art Cafe and later Rye Wax.
Speaking about Peckham over time, Mickey says: “It’s radically changed. When I first came here it really was a place that some people were embarrassed to say they were from or going to if you didn’t know the area.
“There is an air of gentrification which I don’t like at all, but that will happen with all areas.
“When I first lived here Rye Lane was a no-go area after dark – it was dead. There was nothing. The idea of going for a night out in Peckham would have been top of the comedy bill.”
Now, the landscape of Peckham is very different, and Mickey has played a significant role in shaping this. But he’s not planning to stop there.
“Because I don’t own the Bussey Building, there’s 1,000 things I can’t do there, so until I have that stability of owning [my own] building and securing something that’s going to last I won’t be able to settle. I will be looking to build a purpose-built place or move into a place that will guarantee the legacy, but on a level that I think it should be at. It would definitely be around the area.
“We’ve got another venue opening in Catford in the next three to six months, on Brookdale Road – it’s a detached building with a garden and recording studios. It sounds mad but I don’t feel I’ve scratched the surface of the potential of what I can do.”
