A Barn Swallow at the Billy Frank Jr Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, Washington state, USA. This birdie watching me watching them. I don't think they were overly happy with me being there, but I wasn't really that close and they didn't flitter away too fast so I think I barely passed inspection. I shot this when I stopped by the Nisqually refuge on my way home from Seattle last year. It's a nice spot to get out and see a fair number of birds in the estuary at the south end of Puget Sound. The board walk is several miles long round trip so plan on taking your time seeing what there is to see. And between the wooded area and the open tidal flats there's is usually lots to see. . Mount Rainier National Park has 9 major rivers that drain water from the mountain’s slopes. One of them is the Nisqually River. Born on the southern side of the mountain, at the end of the Nisqually Glacier, the river collects water from the Paradise River and various good sized creeks (Van Trump, Kautz, and Tahoma) and other glaciers before exiting the park boundaries.
The Nisqually River is not terribly long, only about 78 miles. From the park boundaries, it travels down through Ashford and Elbe to two reservoirs (Alder and LaGrande). The elevation eases as the Nisqually River makes it’s way to McKenna, Yelm, and the Nisqually Indian Tribe’s reservation. At the Billy Frank Jr. National Wildlife Refuge in Olympia, the Nisqually River ends it’s journey and joins the Puget Sound. Along the way, other creeks and rivers add to the Nisqually and swell it’s size a bit.
It’s not a long trip for the Nisqually River, but it connects many waterways along it’s path as well as communities. Have you stopped by it’s shores to enjoy the sound of the water rushing by? Is there a bend or gravel bar you like to visit during fishing season? What part of the Nisqually River is your favorite? ~ams

This past spring I had been up in Seattle on a job and on my way back I finally stopped at the Billy Frank Jr National Wildlife Refuge at the estuary of the Nisqually river. I've been meaning to do so for many, many years but whenever I'm going by there I'm always trying to get somewhere without time to stop. And it's not that far away that I could have just gone to there - but alas I hadn't until now. That whole thing about making time to do things you want to do instead of just saying, "Some day...." Anyway, I finally stopped and though I didn't see nearly as much wildlife as I had hoped, I did see some. Others returning from the 2 mile one way walk said they had seen numerous eagles and such. I only saw a couple, but it was getting late and I just wasn't quite at the right time. And I only got pictures of even fewer since the birds tend to flitter off faster than I can snap the picture or were against the sun setting. And when you're using a long (and heavy) lens, it's hard to get locked on fast enough. But I do like what I got like this one. . May 2022 .
