There is something - and I am sure this has already been said by someone - but there is something to be found in that, in this era of binge watching and devouring 'content' like ravenous caterpillars desperate to become butterflies, a book - the original binge content, published as a complete whole, purchaseable complete, devourable at whatever speed your own mind and life dictate - has been taken and de-bingeified. Rather than everyone going out immediately and just reading the novel from cover to cover - it's not even in copyright, you can get it for free! - there's a whole host of hungry, eager readers who are waiting for the instalments as they come, who lament the days with no updates, who moan and cry and know that if they wanted to they could easily cure their own hunger, but they are choosing not to. They are choosing anticipation. They are choosing delay. They are choosing to draw out their own pleasure.
Dracula Daily and will power and the antithesis of binge-watch culture, that's all I'm saying. It's a thing. There's something there.

Binge watching the Owl House with my friend who had never seen it:
Darius: *sounds exasperated and facepalms*
Friend: He sounds like a dad.
Me: Hmm?
Friend: I know he’s supposed to be evil, but he gives me single dad vibes.
Me:…
Friend: Oh my god. Is a super bad guy or something? Am I supposed to hate him?
Me: No. No. Just…
Me: Just watch the show and you’ll get it,
Several episodes later…
Friend: THE DAD VIBES WERE INTENTIONAL?
Me: Seems so.
Friend: I f*cking love this show
Lol. My friend also guessed that Amity was gay in her first episode and then complained about how ‘of course, they won’t do more than imply it, but come on. Look at those nails and come on, doesn’t it feel like she’s compensating for something? Look at her. Closeted gay, I tell you. That woman kisses girls.’ He also said Hunter had ‘redemption arc vibes’ when he tossed Eda and Luz the sword bc ‘The boi’s honest and a teenage villain. Bet he’s angsty. Where’s Uncle Iro? ‘😂
I slowly died laughing as he realized all the sarcastic comments he made slowly came true. The look on his face when Luz asked Amity out. Priceless.
As we agreed, gay minds think alike. Lol.

Y'know, as much as I liked Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I kinda really wish it'd been released weekly instead of via Netflix's usual "Eh, fukkit, drop it all at once; enjoy your binge, idiots" model.
Like, just imagine being left with the episode one cliffhanger ending after how hard the series had been advertisted as a straight-forward adaptation. It would've been insane, but it also woulda been so damn fun. It's such a shame we'll never see all the speculation about where the story could've gone from there, or (in the case of future episodes) all of the little moments that would've been narrowed in on until the next episode comes out.
I mean, I watched this thing two episodes a day to try and digest it better, but that could never compare. And that was just me doing it deliberately; I know no one else out there did that. Jus', goodness. What a lil' bummer that we missed out on those between-episode weeks.

Binge Watching / Vi Stark Rant Time 📺
Tumblr media
Riddle me this one please 🙏 why is it that the human brain has the capacity to continue a series without stopping? 🧐
First, we have a log line, which is that juicy one-liner that describes what a movie or series is about. We all know this, it’s the summary that captures the reader and peaks the viewer’s interest despite us might not wanting to see the series or film. I bet, we all had that feeling where we don’t know to watch something or not, but it’s that long-line that makes us interested 👀 (it also helps hearing it from the perspective of someone else who had already seen the product before!)
A good log-line answers the “What is it?” question, clearly and enticingly. Most log-lines will state the central conflict of the story and provide some sort of an emotional hook to stimulate interest.
Secondly, the open loops! We are all too familiar with those dang cliffhangers at the end of our favorite TV shows that leaves us wanting more, feeling annoyed or antsy cause we want to know what happens next! What are is rest of this story? What comes next? Is Meredith gonna end up with Derek or not?! Are Mark and Lexie gonna stay how they truly feel?
The human brain is so complex yet captivating as it wants to comprehend and close that loop.
This is why SO MANY people end up binge watching their favorite series til the end in a single weekend. We need the answers! Sometimes it’s not answers, sometimes it’s that simple evoking energy the series gives us that might be comfort, that leads up to keep watching.
Third, the storytelling duh! What do really great TV shows and movies have in common? They have all mastered the art of transporting you out of your living room and into an entirely different world that they’ve created. And they do this through extremely thorough sensory detail and descriptive storytelling. The lighting, the music, the dialogue, the carefully crafted costumes and landscaping, they all play a pivotal role in your cinematic experience.
But all of this can be carefully replicated just as well, if not better through great writing! That’s because great storytelling brings out all of your senses, sounds, taste, sight and even the smells.

Sooo now I wanna hear your thoughts on this! 🫶 What are some series or movies that have grabbed your attention and why? 📼

Things I have watched on Netflix whilst (really) ill and my rating of them:
Dungeon Meshi: 100/10 - I started watching before I was ill, its worth buying a Netflix subscription for this, its great, SungWon Cho is in it, go watch it.
Tumblr media
Words Bubble up Like Soda Pop: 9/10 - A feel good, sweet film about young love in a very bright summer mood
Tumblr media
Drifting Home: 10/10 - Adorable kids go on a harrowing adventure Ghibli style, beautiful animation, sweet story telling. The children do act like emotionally immature children but you’d expect that. I watched it twice.
Tumblr media
Children of the Whales: 7/10 - Fun, clearly misses bits of the manga. Some characters have a fun telekinetic glowy power called 'thymia'. One of the characters really feels like the writer’s OC, which is fine, but occasionally off-putting . World building was super fun, and I really liked the character Suou.
Tumblr media
The Orbital Children: 1/10 - I'm giving it 1 just for the fun first episode. it seemed like it would start with good world building and had cute enough animation. Don’t watch it, I sunk 6 episodes of time into it with increasing frustration. It is a complete waste of your time post the third episode. It had ant man level writing where quantum was replaced with AI, and it just got worse. I was ill enough that the quality didn't matter that much.
Tumblr media
The Garden of Words: 5/10 - just for the animation, which was beautiful - it was a story about a 15 year old boy developing a crush on a depressed English teacher, and they become friends, he doesn’t know she’s a teacher. It leaves you constantly wondering if the studio is about to condone something illegal until the last five minutes. Its ending is unsatisfactory but also inoffensive.
Tumblr media
Flavours of Youth: 4/10 - It's sweet, I didn't personally enjoy it that much. There was far too much narration and it felt a bit disjointed for my tastes.
Tumblr media
Several hours Sir David Attenborough narrated animal documentaries, 10/10 - I like watching fish, and also many other animals - this was not on Netflix
I also watched a Scoobie Do Jeprody spin off thing called Scooby Do Guess Who? or something and that was strange - can't remember where this one was.
I have been so ill.

Spreca

I just saw a post saying something like "can you believe it's been a month since GO2 and I'm still not over it" and like.
Can you believe how much the binge watching model has messed up our perception of time? And what if I told you that had the season been released weekly, we'd only be at episode 4? One month really isn’t such a long time, guys.

Discovered a show called "Life After People" and I'm currently binge watching it whilst pretending to be a future alien watching a documentary about the extinct human race whilst gasping at the state of that planet.
