the glossy-mantled manucode is a member of the bird-of-paradise family. they are found in new guinea, along with surrounding islands. they are known for their iridescent feathers, which are purple and blue under light. they primarily feed on fruits, in particular figs, and arthropods. unlike many birds of paradise, the sexes are very similar; the colorful glossy plumage the species is known for is found in both males and females (females are slightly smaller than males). they aren’t particularly social birds; they are rarely found in small groups, but more frequently found solo or in pairs.

the ribbon-tailed astrapia is a species of bird-of-paradise found in western portions of papua new guinea. feeding primarily on fruits and arthropods, this species thrives in subalpine forests. they are named for the male’s breeding plumage, with flowing white ‘ribbons’ for tail plumage. males are also distinguished by their iridescent green heads, chests, and a nodule above the beak; females are duller in coloration, but still have iridescent plumage on the head. like other birds of paradise, males of this species are polygamous. the ribbon-tailed astrapia is considered threatened by habitat loss and hunting (primarily the males, for their prized plumage).

December 26, 2023 - Short-tailed Paradigalla (Paradigalla brevicauda) These birds-of-paradise are found in and around mountain forests and gardens in central New Guinea. They feed on fruit, as well as invertebrates, small frogs, and lizards. Breeding in most months, except for March and November, females build cup or bowl-shaped nests from moss, ferns, small climbing plants, vine tendrils, and other materials in trees. They lay a single egg, incubating it and feeding the chick alone.
