The Red Tailed Black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii)
"Ngaoara or Karrak" In the language of the Noongar People.
An amazing species of Cockatoo that have a truly beautiful colouring. While the males are solid black with a bright crimson tail, I believe the ladies take the cake on this one. These three gorgeous girls show off not only the starry sky pattern they carry but the fiery energy of their tails.
It is believed that they act as guardians to loved ones, bringing them to rest with the ancestors. Seeing a black cockatoo can also mean that rain is coming, further enforcing their identity as a symbol of change.
They are listed as Vulnerable at the moment due to habitat loss, rare nest hollows and invasive species.

I was at my local library this morning, studying with a friend, and we heard this weird squawk and this guy going "shh Rex! shh!" and so we just presumed this guy had a fucked up baby making fucked up sounds. Then we heard it again, and the guy telling something to "shh" again, and my friend looked at me and said "there's no way this guy has a bird in the library..." and so we just presumed a window was open or something. We ended up going to have a look, and this guy had a whole fucking black cockatoo on his shoulder!!
for reference:
one of those!! in the library!!
it turns out he was giving a talk to some kids about endangered species and general plant stuff, but like.. he was doing it all with this black cockatoo bigger than his head on his shoulder. I respect he was trying to tell a cockatoo to "shh," one of the most notoriously noisy australian birds. And I respect that a cockatoo was the bird he decided to bring to a usually dead silent library.

this baudin’s white-tailed black cockatoo is unusually pale. as their name implies, the species is usually mainly black. however, this bird has a genetic mutation known as leucism, where pigmentation such as melanin is reduced. this bird was spotted around margaret river, au, with a flock of typically-colored cockatoos. with fewer than 10,000 members of the species remaining, this sighting is especially rare.
