A Pair Of Cheeseburgers in Paradise (Bob Floyd x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: There's always that one place that you and Bob have felt at home and where your best memories have always been made
Notes: I am both ready and definitely not ready for fall, I'm a summer baby and I'm not sorry for it at all (lol).
Islamorada, Florida
Labor Day Weekend
It was only the second, or third, day of your little vacation with Bob, but you had never been happier than on that little slice of beach, the smells of the seabreeze and the afternoon sun lingering high above those clear waters. The pelicans were busy hanging out on the dock posts, the palms rustling away while the screech of the seagulls was heard from not too far off.
You and Bob were enjoying yourselves immensely, not needing to worry about work or personal bullshit that tended to get in the way of everything. Your wedding had been just a few days before, the boys sending you both off in style and bidding you farewell at the airport before you had taken off for Florida.
The smell of the charcoal grill on the porch made you hungrier than you had realized but you were laughing a little as Bob tossed on a few thick, homemade burger patties while the little bluetooth on the porch played "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Jimmy, your new feathered friend, was perched on the porch rail, bobbing his head and flapping his blue and yellow wings as though he too were dancing along to the music.
"Hey sweet-pea," Bob said cheerfully as he drew you in and kissed your forehead. "You hungry?"
"Are you really making the burgers?" you chuckled.
"I snuck out to Publix before you were awake to go get the stuff," Bob answered. "The condiments section was a little bare but I grabbed the last bottle of Heinz fifty-seven before anybody else could."
"You making fries with this?"
"Yep," Bob answered. "Those super thin, stringy ones that you like with the seasoning recipe that Javy's dad gave us."
Your mouth was absolutely watering at the thought. You and Bob had traveled to New Orleans once to visit Coyote's family and to try some of the foods that his family had brought up with them from Brazil. You could almost taste the salt and the spices that Felipe had used, the black pepper, garlic, hot cayenne peppers and all the others.
You helped Bob with the rest of the food prep and once the fries were done, you sprinkled them with a healthy dosage of the spice mixture that Coyote had sent you in the mail. As soon as the buns were toasted, everything was plated including the kosher dill pickle wedges and the burgers were put together.
You both sat out at the table on the front porch of the little pink and turquoise beach cottage, laughing and chattering away even as Bob cracked open a cold one and poured it into one of the glasses from the cabinet.
"Look at that, barely any head," he said with a smile.
"Penny should've taken you on as head bartender in that case," you chuckled.
"Yeah but you know me (y/n)," Bob said, setting aside the can. "I'd give Jake nothing but head."
You snorted a little, trying not to choke on the bite of burger you had been chewing, knowing Bob was bound to slip in a dirty joke somewhere along the line. "Bastard!" you said once you had swallowed. "I'm eating here!"
Bob laughed before he took a sip of the summery beer in the glass and dug into his lunch. You couldn't deny that they were the best burgers you had ever had, just a little slice of paradise right in front of you, but you always knew that Bob would be your real paradise and that you would be his, for the rest of your days.

jupiter family media taste hcs
this is stupid but idrc. my blog.
David listens to like, classic 90s rock. Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins - that whole lot. He also really likes classic, OG 80s metal (metallica, judas priest, dio, etc.). He developed his music taste from 95 to 99 and never really got into stuff after that. Hes a grumpy old man about his music and will never stray from his ol reliable stack of dusty CDs. Where he's a grandpa about his music though, this man will watch basically any movie that comes out and say "that was pretty good" in his opinion cinema peaked with 2001 a Space Odyssey and Saving Private Ryan. Hal tried to show him Akira or Ghost in the Shell and he got wayyyyyy confused. He doesn't really watch TV other than blankly staring at history channel and animal planet "documentaries" and manly man reality TV shows when there's nothing better to do
Hal has a really eclectic collection of music that is constantly changing. However the most common thread of music he likes is 80s New Wave and synth - The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Duran Duran. That kinda stuff. However his playlist went on to be full of vocaloid songs, neo-synthwave, break core and he got into more experimental stuff as he got older (even then he never fully dug deep, just started listening to Bjork and Kate Bush yk?) He also loves soundtracks and *loves* lofi hip hop. We already basically know Hal's taste in movies/tv so instead im gonna say his favorite anime movie is Akira, his favorite non-anime movie is Brazil and if you ask him his favorite anime he'll go on and on and on about a super obscure mecha anime from the 80s. I think hes a massive cinephile and huge nerd about his movies and shows but it's literally only for anime and sci fi and occasionally action stuff. Ask him about the complexities of Apocalypse Now or the symbolism in Blue Velvet and he'll just give you a blank stare.
Sunny ended up with like. The weirdest combination of her parents tastes. She LOVESSSSS vocaloid and LOVESSSS anime but in a tweenager in the mid 2010s way you know. This girl was in the Black Butler, Attack on Titan, Fairy Tale, Soul Eater TRENCHES. She also got into a lot of alt music but it was. you know. Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco and baby's first alt band stuff. What a crazy lil gal.
Raiden was a nu-metal kid big time. He was always bumping Korn and Slipknot and System of a Down. He was also really into 90s industrial like Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, and KMFDM. He kinda grew out of this but not really, just mellowed out and got into more 'mainstream' alt like Radiohead and Elliot Smith. As we know, Raiden is a canonical filmbro (getting into fights with random women about pointless details in movies). I think he lovessssss neo noir and crime thrillers. Anything dark and gritty he just adores. Taxi Driver, Fight Club, Fallen Angels, Clockwork Orange, Crash, Prisoners <- whatevere this genre is he just eats that shit up. Hes a total snob, but not like. In a french film school way in a over 500 entries on letterboxd way. He's subscribed to like evry major movie review channel and it's impossible to take him out to any kinoplex because he just starts ranting on the state of modern cinema. He still maintains this snobbery and its only gotten worse lmao

Indigenous women are showing us how to fight for environmental and human rights
During a recent trip to Brazil, I saw how Indigenous women activists there have completely changed the political landscape
Tumblr media
I was invited to the third Indigenous Women’s March in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, earlier this month. The last occupation of Brazil’s legislature was in January 2022, when a group of rightwing thugs, imitating the January 6 riot in the US, attempted to kill Brazilian democracy. This was the exact opposite.
Five hundred Indigenous women from across Brazil occupied the Congress – not with guns or knives or anger, but with the strength and truth of their words, the intensity of their knowing, with their headdresses, feathers and beaded primordial designs calling us to the earth, to know the earth, to protect and respect the biomes and honor Indigenous women’s rights to their lands.
There, in a space dominated by conservative white men in suits, deep in the business of mining, timber, agro-business and evangelizing – Indigenous women, once only a few, pepper-sprayed and excluded – now had their sisters as they walked through the front door with a sense of belonging, pride, pageantry and urgency. They opened with their version of the national anthem, sung by Djuena Tikuna in her Indigenous language. Those who suffered the “violence of absence” for years were suddenly undeniably present.
It hasn’t even been a year since two Indigenous leaders, Sônia Guajajara and Célia Xakriabá, were elected to Congress in Brazil. (Guajajara was later appointed minister of Indigenous peoples.) In their very short time in power – through brilliant organizing to claim demarcation of Indigenous lands, unapologetic assertion of their Indigenous culture, and mobilizing thousands of Indigenous women throughout the country, they have already shifted the policies and political landscape of Brazil.
Guajajara told me, “Many people are saying that Brasília is now breathing new air, that you can already see many cocares [headdresses] and wraps of black women within government spaces on the streets of Brasília, and we are present in all environments. So, it is certainly not just a physical presence, but also a different energy that we bring to this place, which is the energy of ancestral strength.”
What I experienced during my recent time in Brazil was nothing less than a radical re-imagining of the country’s future, but it also felt like the beginning of what many Indigenous women there are calling for – a much broader and more global agenda, a “reforesting” of politics and the mind. Before I had not been terribly hopeful; I am now.
Here are four reasons why.

The Police...
An overview of an epic horror going back decades, with too little or nothing done: -
Killings by police (USA), and racism:
Tumblr media
"US law enforcement killed at least 1,176 people in 2022, making it the deadliest year on record for police violence since 2013 when experts first started tracking the killings nationwide, a new data analysis reveals.
Police across the country killed an average of more than three people a day, or nearly 100 people every month last year according to Mapping Police Violence. The non-profit research group maintains a database of reported deaths at the hands of law enforcement, including people fatally shot, beaten, restrained and Tasered."
"...in 32% of cases last year, the person was fleeing before they were killed, generally running or driving off – cases in which experts say lethal force is unwarranted and also endangers the public. In June, Ohio police officers fired dozens of rounds at Jayland Walker, who was unarmed and fleeing; a month later, an officer in California exited an unmarked car and immediately fired at Robert Adams as he ran in the opposite direction.
The racial disparities have also persisted: Black people were 24% of those killed last year, while making up only 13% of the population. From 2013 to 2022, Black residents were three times more likely to be killed by US police than white people. The inequality is particularly severe in some cities, including Minneapolis where police have killed Black residents at a rate 28 times higher than white residents, and Chicago, where the rate was 25 times higher, Mapping Police Violence reported." -
Worldwide, figures are hard to come by. 10,000s of people are killed by police annually, with the USA, the Philippines and Brazil being among the worst.
Also:
Are there any statistics for the numbers of assaults by police which don't result in fatalities? How many police assaults are going unnoticed because the victim didn't die but is nonetheless seriously injured?
"...The simple truth is law enforcement as a US institution does not treat Black Americans as people worthy of humane treatment. They reserve their “to serve and protect” mottos for white people committing the most inhumane of crimes. It is ingrained, it is institutional, it is personal, and it may be universal. All of this is key to why law enforcement in the US must be defunded and needs to be abolished. A system designed to allow cowardly actions and near sociopathic behaviour in the name of “law and order” is too deadly to remain intact. Unless that is the point – to cower Black Americans into accepting oppression – which it may be for people like Biden.
It’s probably evident: I don’t like cops. I’ve felt threatened by them since I was five.
My first encounter with law enforcement in action was in July 1975. I was half asleep when awakened by a fight between my mom and dad. When my intoxicated father lunged at my mom with a dull kitchen knife, my mom used her arms and legs to deflect the attempt, right into the left side of my father’s stomach. Back then, we lived on the second floor of a duplex six blocks from the Bronx border in Mount Vernon, New York. My father stood in the stairwell outside the door to our flat, bleeding and moaning softly.
A few minutes later, two of Mount Vernon’s finest showed up – one white man and one Black man – along with an ambulance. After peppering my mom with questions, and then checking out my father’s stab wound, the two cops idly stood by and laughed as two EMTs put my father on a stretcher. I will never forget that they found my mother fighting off my dad funny, because he ended up stabbing himself. I have never not remembered the look of stunned hurt in my traumatised mother’s eyes.
It wasn’t a joke to me. Yet, somehow, the two officers found domestic violence humorous. The Black cop patted me on my head like I was some lost cat or dog. This was the first lesson in racism, patriarchy, misogynoir and policing I received, long before I had learned any of these words or what they meant." ...
... "When the moments came when I should have called 911 in the 1980s, whether it was me witnessing domestic violence at home or me being the object of physical abuse, I never picked up the phone. I knew the police were untrustworthy. The killing of the 25-year-old graphic artist, Michael Stewart, in 1983, and of the 66-year-old grandmother Eleanor Bumpurs, in 1984, by New York officers helped reinforce a few things. One, that it’s rare for law enforcement to stop a crime in progress. Two, that police often end up committing a crime for no good reason. And three, that the penalty for Black folks having a mental illness or a bad day is often death.
Since my 17th birthday at the end of 1986, I have been accosted, stopped, frisked and followed by police in different parts of the country – whether for walking while Black in Beverly Hills or driving while Black in Pittsburgh and in Silver Spring, Maryland. I was held at gunpoint by a shaking 60-something white policeman on my own campus at Carnegie Mellon University in 1994.
All these encounters involved either “fitting the description” of someone much shorter than my 190cm (6-foot, 3-inch) frame or for a minor traffic violation. Each interaction brought on anxiety that could have left me vulnerable in the hands of police all too willing to beat me into a hospital bed or shoot me into the afterlife.
Farmington Hills, Michigan, is one example of how easy it is to build a police force that will shoot to kill a Black person for anything. As of this spring (2022), they used pictures of Black men with guns as target practice training for their mostly white police officers. Irrespective of an officer’s race or ethnicity, white supremacy is the default position of law enforcement. ..."
..............................
And then there's the many other "issues" (not in any order of importance) -
Homophobia...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Homophobic actions by police are countless. It is after all what caused the Stonewall riots in 1969, and countless other protests since.
It may be less of an issue in many parts of the world nowadays (though as recent reports have shown, anti-lgbtq prejudice is still common among cops), but that doesn't wipe away the many decades+ of abuse. Arrests for consensual sexual activity in people's own homes, arrests for cruising, the raids on bath houses, bars, and clubs. The instances of sexual assault against LGBTQ by police (for example there have been claims in the past of police detaining then assaulting men caught in the main cruising area of Newcastle (UK). The attacks on LGBTQ rights activists. The police involvement in the assassinations of Harvey Milk and George Moscone. The failure to properly respond to and investigate serious hate crimes.
And of course if you live somewhere like Qatar, Saudi Arabia or Iran, then you can be tortured, jailed, or even executed.
How long is it going to be before Florida, Texas, or the Dakotas is added to that list? I'm not joking. Many US states are on a sharp downward spiral in regards to LGBTQ rights, race, misogyny, abortion and sexual health, and so much else. See also the likes of Russia, the UK, and Poland.
-
Thefts...
"According to their data, local police departments have seized more than $68 billion dollars worth of personal property without due process over the last 20 years. In fact, since 2014, police have been stealing more than actual burglars—and most of that came from people who hadn't been convicted of a crime." 21 Dec 2020
When it comes to actually solving crimes: UK police for example have failed to solve over a million thefts and burglaries in recent years.
Meanwhile in the US only 2% of major crimes are ever solved.
The New York Times reviewed national dispatch data from the FBI in June 2020, and found that just 4% of officers’ time is devoted to violent crime.
"In 2019, 88% of the time L.A. County sheriff’s officers spent on stops was for officer-initiated stops rather than in response to calls. The overwhelming majority of that time – 79% – was spent on traffic violations. By contrast, just 11% of those hours was spent on stops based on reasonable suspicion of a crime.
In Riverside, about 83% of deputies’ time spent on officer-initiated stops went toward traffic violations, and just 7% on stops based on reasonable suspicion.
Moreover, most of the stops are pointless, other than inconveniencing citizens, or worse – “a routine practice of pretextual stops,” researchers wrote. Roughly three out of every four hours that Sacramento sheriff’s officers spent investigating traffic violations were for stops that ended in warnings, or no action, for example."
- When politicians claim more police is going to make everything better: "In 2016, a group of criminologists conducted a systematic review of 62 earlier studies of police force size and crime between 1971 and 2013. They concluded that 40 years of studies consistently show that “the overall effect size for police force size on crime is negative, small, and not statistically significant.” -
Targeted killings (assassinations)
The police were involved in the assassinations of such figures as Fred Hampton of the Black Panthers (and arguably Harvey Milk and George Moscone), among others.
- Sexual assaults...
"Some 2,000 allegations of sexual misconduct including rape have been levelled against serving police officers over the last four years, according to data released under freedom of information rules.
Figures from 39 forces showed nearly two-thirds of complaints were discontinued, but that about 30 per cent of officers, special constables or PCSOs accused of sexual misconduct had previously faced separate claims of wrongdoing.
Among the complaints were more than 370 allegations of sexual assault, almost 100 accusations of rape, and 18 alleged child sex offences. Overall, there were 514 proven allegations across 33 police forces.
However, just one third of guilty workers were sacked in cases where sexual misconduct complaints were upheld, according to numbers uncovered by Channel 4’s Dispatches." ...
... "A separate set of figures released under freedom of information on Monday revealed that, of 750 sexual misconduct claims against police officers from 31 forces between 2016 and 2020, 34 resulted in sackings."
"...we traced the outcomes of 689 reports of sexual assault made to the SIU between 2005 and 2020. We found that the vast majority of allegations of sexual assault do not result in meaningful consequences for the police officers involved." ...
... "For the reports that did receive a full investigation, 86.3 per cent did not result in charges being laid. During the 15-year-period of our study, only 7.4 per cent of investigated complaints of sexual assault led to charges." -
Killing dogs:
Some estimates claim that over 10,000 dogs are shot annually by police in the US. Whatever the actual figure, it is certain from the many documented cases that many dogs are being killed - mostly without justification - by police. There are many horrific videos online showing that no one and nothing is safe from the blatant sadism of out of control cops.
And of course...
(This started as a smallish post and then spiralled. There's much else that could be added to this)

Jackson's Daily Bestiary #13: Saci Perere
Tumblr media
Region of Origin: Brazil
Saci Perere is a trickster spirit from Brazilian folklore. Originating from southern Brazil, he appears as a short, dark-skinned boy who lives in the forest. He smokes from a tobacco pipe and wears a red cap that allows him to appear and disappear at will or move around in the form of a tornado.
The Saci Perere is primarily known for his love of trickery. He hides children's toys, sets animals loose, curses chicken eggs so they won't hatch, etc. He also has a particular love of causing mischief in the kitchen, where he will break dishes, put insects in food, spill salt and pepper and sour the milk, among others. He is, however, not deadly, simply content with being a nuisance.
It is said that the Saci Perere will grant wishes who those who manage to capture his red hat. However, the Saci's hat is said to have a horrible stench that can never be washed off. Alternatively, one can also throw a blesses rosary into the dust devil he produces and eventually imprison him in a black bottle.

what are some cheap perfumes that are popular now in the us?? is there like one affordable perfume that every girl is wearing
Anonymous asked:
(affordable perfume anon) preferrably one that isn't from a celebrity or a dupe house (it can be a dupe but not explicitly) sorry if i'm asking for too much 😭😭😭
You're good! I went on the Sephora and Ulta websites (the most popular beauty stores in the US) and looked to see what their least expensive bestsellers are.
From Sephora:
The Sol de Janerio Brazilian Crush Fragrance and Body Mists were super popular and super affordable. The goal of the Sol de Janerio lines are to capture the beauty of Brazil in their products. The Cheirosa ’40 Bom Dia scent was the most popular. It's sultry, delicate, and sophisticated, with notes of black amber plum, vanilla woods, and jasmine blooms. The Cheirosa ’62 Bum Bum scent was the second most popular. It's irresistible and sunny, with notes of salted caramel, pistachio and vanilla. But you can't really go wrong with this line- all of their scents sell super well and are only $38USD for 240 mL.
Glossier You is the other standout from Sephora, either in the perfume ($64USD for 50ml) or the solid ($30USD for 3g). It's a scent that's supposed to be the "ultimate personal fragrance" because it smells a little different on everyone. It's key notes are pink Pepper, iris, and abrox, and it's designed to be soft, warm, and familiar.
Finally, Melrose Place by Ouai is also a good option. It's a velvety-rich rose fragrance has hints of bergamot, lychee, cedarwood, and white musk that "smells like LA sunsets and valet parking." It's $64USD for 50 mL.
From Ulta:
Dans Les Bois by Dime is probably the best option I found here. It's a "feminine, bold, and intoxicating" scent with notes of blood orange, lemon, jasmine, lavender, saffrom, sage, amber, wood, leather, and vanilla. It was in their top 25 most popular scents and is $48USD for 50 mL.
Philosophy's line was pretty good here as well - Amazing Grace and Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere were both pretty popular and are $50-60 for 60mL. Amazing Grace is "appropriate, soft and feminine" with notes of bergamot, muguet blossoms, and musk. Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere is indulgent with notes of tangerine, cashmere wood orchid, vanilla bean, creamy sandalwood, and skin musk.
For what it's worth, two most popular here were celebrity scents: Ariana Grande's Cloud perfume and Billie Eilish's Eilish perfume. Overall, Ulta's offerings were kind of unimpressive when it comes to bang for your buck. Most of the perfumes it offers are designer perfumes at $60-$70 for 30 mL. A few of those that were popular are Angel by Mugler, Ocean di Gioia by Armani, Bright Crystal by Versace, Idôle by Lancome, and Clinique Happy by Clinique.
Overall, if you're looking for an affordable perfume that every girl in the US is wearing and that's not season-specific, I think Glossier You is your best bet. For me, it's one of the perfumes that comes to mind when I think of girls who are trendy and cool.

In 1902, the British Medical Journal reported an unusual case of rapid hair whitening.
A 22-year-old woman “witnessed a tragedy of a woman’s throat being cut and the victim falling dead at her feet,” according to a physician at the London Temperance Hospital. The next day, the right side of her pubic hair turned white, while the left half remained black.
This historic case study makes for a terribly weird (and rapid) example of an otherwise common occurrence: gray hairs seem to accumulate when we’re stressed. And it’s not just random violence that sends people’s pigment running—college exams, children, and work pressure appear to change our coloring, too. But for millennia, scholars have been relying mostly on anecdotal proof and intuition to rationalize this phenomenon. In the absence of clear evidence, many scientists did not believe stress could turn hair snow white, instead arguing the change must be triggered by chemicals or strange immune system behavior. Rare cases where doctors observed the rapid whitening—like in the 1902 BMJ study—were a source of endless consternation.
A 2020 paper, published in the journal Nature, may put some of these arguments to rest. In the study, stem cell and regenerative biologists from the United States and Brazil reported that stress can indeed cause hair to lose its pigment—and they identified a cellular pathway by which it can occur.
To study this vexing relationship, the researchers created an elaborate animal model, which basically involved trying to turn black-haired rats white with lab-made stressors. They tried three different tactics: restraint stress, chronic unpredictable stress, and nociception-induced stress, which is caused by physical pain (or the threat of it). Each successfully turned the rat’s hair white. Perhaps unsurprisingly, nociception-induced stress, which the scientists stimulated by injecting the rats with resiniferatoxin, an analogue of the chili pepper compound capsaicin, worked best and fastest.
Having identified the optimal way to make a rat panic, the team began searching for corresponding changes in the physiological pathways that give rise to coat color. They were particularly interested in the behaviors of two types of cells: differentiated melanocytes, which produce pigment in the hair and skin, and melanocyte stem cells, the raw material from which melanocytes develop. To observe each one independently, the researchers injected their tiny test subjects with the hot pepper-like substance when the rats’ fur was actively growing. At that point in the hair growth cycle, differentiated melanocytes naturally cluster in the hair bulb, while melanocyte stem cells gather together in a separate space called the bulge.
For five days after the injection, the rats’ coats remained black. The differentiated melanocytes in the hair bulb continued to pump out color. But in many follicles, the overtaxed melanocyte stem cells were “completely lost,” the researchers report. Pushed by a flood of noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter that surges in response to stress, the existing stem cells proliferated so quickly that they completely disappeared from their niche. The next time the rats’ coat grew, there were no melanocyte stem cells in these damaged follicles, so white hairs sprouted.
“In just a few days, the reservoir of pigment-regenerating stem cells [was] depleted,” Ya-Chieh Hsu, a professor of stem cell and regenerative biology at Harvard and the study’s senior author, told PopSci in an email. The loss was permanent. “And once they’re gone, pigment cannot be generated anymore.”
“This is an exquisitely elegant paper unrevealing an important mechanism of hair graying,” Alexey Terskikh, who researches development, aging, and regeneration at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, wrote via email.
But there are many other ways hair can lose its color. A 2018 paper suggested an overactive immune response can also destroy melanocytes and melanocyte stem cells in rats, bleaching their coat. Certain skin cancer drugs turn some patients’ hair transparent. Doctors think it’s a sign their bodies are responding positively to the drug. Genetic pathways, environmental pathways, and mutations can also play a role, according to Terskikh.
Hair still holds many secrets. We don’t know why hair loss plays out differently on someone’s scalp than on their face or, for that matter, their back. And, unfortunately for the anonymous Englishwoman with world-famous pubes, doctors still don’t agree about canities subita, the contested phenomenon where hair blanches seemingly overnight. But, in many cases, scientists are narrowing in on answers. In recent years, there’s been a surge in research and development for anti-balding solutions—and many of them show promise. Terskikh, for his part, is working on regenerating hair from scratch using things like pluripotent stem cells. If it works, we’ll have an unlimited supply of hair—presumably in every shade.

‘It’s dangerous work’: new generation of Indigenous activists battle to save the Amazon
Campaigners in Brazil use drones to document work of self-defence teams trying to stop environmental destruction caused by illegal mining
Tumblr media
The medicine man flashed a mischievous grin as he dabbed his warriors’ eyeballs with a feather soaked in malagueta pepper and watched them grimace in pain. “They’re going into battle and this will protect them,” José Delfonso Pereira said as he advanced on his next target with a jam jar of his chilli potion.
“It hurts and it burns,” the Macuxi shaman admitted. “But it will help them see more clearly and stop them falling ill.”
It was a crisp August morning and a dozen members of an Indigenous self-defence team had assembled in the hillside village of Tabatinga to receive Pereira’s blessing before launching their latest mission into one of the Amazon’s most secluded corners, near Brazil’s border with Guyana and Venezuela.
Some of the men clutched bloodwood truncheons as they prepared to journey down the Maú River in search of illegal miners; others held bows and arrows adorned with the black feathers of curassow birds. Marco Antônio Silva Batista carried a drone.
“If I die, it will be for a good cause – ensuring our territory is preserved for future generations,” said the 20-year-old activist-journalist, whose ability to spy on environmental criminals from above has made him a key member of GPVTI, an Indigenous patrol group in the Brazilian state of Roraima.
Batista, who belongs to South America’s Macuxi people, is part of a new generation of Indigenous journalists helping chronicle an age-old battle against outside aggression. For centuries, non-Indigenous writers and reporters have flocked to the rainforest region to tell their version of that ancestral fight for survival. Now, a growing cohort of Indigenous communicators are telling their own stories, providing first-hand dispatches from some of the Amazon’s most inaccessible and under-reported corners.
“It’s dangerous work and we suffer a lot when we’re out in the field,” said Batista, one of about 26,000 inhabitants of Raposa Serra do Sol, Brazil’s second most populous Indigenous territory. “But it really gives me strength because I’m showing the reality of our lives to the world.”

3 cloves garlic, minced
1 bell pepper, diced

2 tomatoes, diced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
4 cups vegetable broth
2 tablespoons olive oil
Fresh cilantro for garnish
Lime wedges for serving
Instructions:
Rinse the black beans under cold water and remove any debris. Soak the beans overnight in a large bowl filled with enough water to cover them by at least two inches.
In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, bell pepper, and jalapeño (if using). Sauté until the vegetables are softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
Drain the soaked black beans and add them to the pot along with the diced tomatoes, ground cumin, smoked paprika, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine the ingredients.
Pour in the vegetable broth, ensuring that the beans are fully submerged. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Simmer gently for 1½ to 2 hours, or until the beans are tender and creamy.
Once the beans are cooked, taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. If the stew is too thick, you can add more vegetable broth or water to achieve the desired consistency.
