Spiders honestly freak me out, I find them very unnerving, but they’re very important to the ecosystem so I have been trying to get along better with them! Drawing them helps. :-) This pretty lady is the most venomous spider in North America! They are very small and don’t release a lot of venom, though, so their bite is rarely fatal.
[ID: an illustration of a glossy black spider with a red hourglass marking hanging from a web. It is posed symmetrically on a tan background with irregular webbing, and is surrounded with small blue flowers, petals, and buds. End]
my sibling and I found her in the garden, against our front porch. we knew we couldn't let her stay there, so we caught her and brought her inside until we figured out what to do with her.
at first we thought that I'd kill her and keep her as a specimen in my bug collection, but the more I researched how to preserve black widows, the more I realized that I just...didn't want to do that.
so I decided to keep her as a pet! that way I can enjoy having her around, without her being a hazard out in the garden.
(left is the bottle we put her in when we first caught her; right is the bigger jar she's in now)
she's so cool! I love watching her wrap up her prey before eating it, I love watching her carefully walk around her habitat, I just...love everything about her!
as for safety, I don't ever handle her, or put myself in a position where that would happen by accident. I open her jar to give her fresh air and to feed her, but otherwise it stays closed, and I have no contact with her whatsoever.
if you'd like to learn more about keeping black widow spiders as pets, this video is a good one! you can tell that the guy who made it is just as excited about black widows as I am.
@freakattack replied to your post “Which one of these things do you think I'm lying...”:
Contrary to popular belief, these little guys are not the deadliest spider nor are they the deadliest in the USA. Their bites are capable of causing severe symptoms but are seldom fatal, but they are usually only fatal for young children and older adults. Their venom is considered to be about 15 times stronger than the venom of a rattlesnake.
These spiders are known for cannibalism, but sexual cannibalism is actually rare. The name “Black Widow” had been earned from the term of someone (most commonly a woman) who had lost their spouse, after scientists observed females consume their mates after intercourse. But it’s estimated that only roughly 2% of female black widows eat their partners after mating. But, male black widows have their own defense mechanisms in place to avoid the slim amount of females with a taste for male widows. For one instance, they can actually tell when a female spider is hungry by the scent of her pheromones, so they will actively avoid mates who seem hungry.
Cannibalism is most common in newly-hatched spiders. When black widow spiderlings hatch at varying sizes, the largest of the spiders will choose to consume the smallest of the bunch.
and here's verde!! probably clear that she's a black widow :] very elegant, and despite her messy web (which now takes up the entire sizable tank) she's a meticulous builder!!
Bio: Formerly a traveling musician, married the city’s most powerful mob boss, now a wealthy widow after her husband’s mysterious and violent death.
Fans say: Many have quietly assumed it was Mitzi who had him killed but some pieces of dialogue suggest that’s not the whole story. The actual truth of Atlas’s death hasn’t been revealed yet since the story is ongoing!
Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus genus) (Real Life)
Bio: A genus of spiders known for their hourglass shaped markings and dangerous venom.
Fans say: Named after their tendency to eat their husbands :)
