When Hawks talks about thinking that things are not the same anymore in the Todoroki family, he has a flashback to observing Shouto’s behaviour around Endeavor (during the Starservant incident when Hawks gave the coded message to Endeavor).

Of course, BONES skipped the animation of those panels back on S5 too.

But it’s important to show that Hawks is not having just blind faith in Endeavor, but it’s an assumption he bases on his observations.

Still think that hawks defenders insist he has character depth cause the harrowing alternative is that Horikoshi either fumbled or abandoned the original arc he was gonna give hawks and thats why we ended up with a shallow, uninteresting and dissapointing character who's only used as an endeavor hype man.

I'm about to make it worse :') Now we both know trying to get a backstory reveal from Hawks is like trying to find a Pokemon with a 1% appearance rate and eventually you just want to give up trying. (I refuse, I WILL catch one eventually.) And SADLY that's still the case. Because while Dabi revealed the "yo hey, his dad was a serial killer, isn't that crazy, no wonder he's so used to violence!" He didn't say A PEEP of the HPSC part of it, aka nobody knows!! I'm hurt!! Freedom was a silent affair

i feel the same way! I want more hawks backstory (and more hawks content in general tbh) but he hasn’t appeared since chapter 345 :(

but also, it makes sense why dabi wouldn’t address the hpsc’s involvement in buying hawks as a kid and training him to be a child soldier. he’s trying to make hawks look bad, not garner public sympathy for him. 

that being said, i kind of like the idea of hawks’ newfound freedom being a “silent affair”. it’s something that really only the both of them know about, which emphasizes that their characters have a much more complex connection than what you’d initially think based off of their limited interactions.

BNHA used A LOT of inner child image, including the last chapter. And like your last long anon ask, I pondered myself on why Hawks' narrative hits harder for me and I found myself hooked with him than any other child image, and I think I found the reason why. When other characters showed their inner child, Hori's narrative hammered us on "that's why they need help". Those images are the goodness that's left in character and, in a way, someone is obligated to preserve them. When Toga cried, I thought "what will Ochako do to fix it"? When Tenko showed up, I thought "Izuku must do something about it". When little Touya entered Enji's mind, I thought "Ah, that's Enji, and then the family's, burden to bear and eventually save". Even when little Bakugo and little Izuku show up, those were used to show how hopeless they are in their situations and how they desperately need help, forgiveness, friendship/companionship, etc.

But Hawks? Interestingly, I noted every time we're shown little Hawks story, narrative hammered us on "WHY HE HELPED". At first little Hawks HPSC scouting backstories appeared to show why he took the double agent job despite the danger and dirtiness, complete with his personal goal to make the world where heroes have spare time. Then little Hawks appeared to show how he was ready to sacrifice everything, even his name, to help people. The peak of Hawks' backstory on chapter 299 ended with "that's why he helped Endeavor". Little Hawks is last shown on chapter 316 and THAT'S even to help Nagant. I was like omg, when Hawks' pain was shown, that means someone will get helped instead of getting burdened by the weight of need for it to be fixed. And while I thought that's amazing, shows us how utterly STRONG Hawks is, how independent he is, how his pain is the fuel to help people instead of the reason why he needed help, I wanna scream HE NEEDS HELP! Please someone see his inner child too and help him! But no one realized because his inner child is never existed as cry for help, but his self-determined promise to always help people. And that's just too... amazing for me and I wish eventually someone appreciate it too and give him the help he needs but never asked.

I never noticed this but you're so correct, Nonnie! Hawks own child image is used to show the hardship he endured, yes, but also the inner strength he possesses and has always possessed since he was but a small child who needed that help the most.

It's not used to make people want to save him, it's used to save others and that's why it's impact is stronger on me than those used by the other characters (which feels more like a way to excuse them than to address their issues and make the adult realise they need to change).

I think that's why with other characters I want people to acknowledge the adult over the child inside, with Hawks I want people to notice that child but not at the cost of forgoing his adult-self and his strength.

I don't know if my reply makes sense or not but I definitely enjoyed your observation.

Oh my god this fucking gremlin- Alright, yeah, Becky is just like that. She thinks she is above people, not because she`s rich or powerful, but just because she refuses to be part of her age group. She wants to be mature, responsible, but she`s just a kid, she doesn`t know how much she`s missing out.

Martha cares a lot about her, and she really tried to make her understand that she doesn`t know everything, hell even adults don`t know everything, and that is important in maturing, understanding that there is always room to grow and improve yourself. Growing up is a journey without a finish line.

Hello! First things first, I'd like to thank you for the amazing meta you posted. It's a wonderful insight on both the dynamic between Twice and Hawks and Japanese culture with confessiona, so different from Western culture.

Second - I had to read the meta twice (pun intended) before coming with a few questions I hope you won't mind answering. I think you explained everything perfectly, so they are mostly me... speculating? Drawing conclusions? I don't know.

1. So, the "confession scene" is between Jin and Keigo. The latter, however, is seen as Hawks in that scene from Jin's perspective - as the hero, not the human underneath. You elaborated on this clearly. This arc plays out recalling past actions from previous arcs, and all the characters need closure in one way or another. I am also referring to Keigo, in chapter 299, mentioning how someone's true nature is revealed when pushed into a corned - but Keigo wasn't acting on his nature when killing Twice, he was pushing down his sentiments to carrying on his "duty"; that, at least in how I see it, was the mask, Hawks', nature (nurture?).

You also expandend on Hawks and his issues with trusting others, be it from hero work to emotions, and how trust was a core part of Twice and Hawks' dynamic - or, better, the lack of trust. This made me think of Tokoyami reminding Hawks, during the fight vs. All for One, he can trust him and Hawks' shocked expression.

Another conflict between Twice and Hawks appears inevitable at this point, even if Hawks tries to avoid it - so I was thinking, would it be possible we get a recall of the "confession", and actually see both the characters' natures this time? Is it possible we'll get finally a show of genuine trust? It's late for Hawks to save Twice at this point, he failed for all the reasons you stated, he can't go back and it's not his role; I, however, see BNHA as a very hopeful story, and maybe I'm being too wishful on this one, but I think a good cloruse for both characters is reaching an understanding that wasn't there - not as hero or villain, but as people, humans, bare in front of each other.

2. Just a curiosity: if I remember correctly, you mentioned a few times how important it is to use the characters' names and aliases and how you can play with them and their meaning. You did this in the meta talking about Hawks and Keigo, so I'd like to ask - was the switch from using Keigo to using Hawks in the last part (starting with "Hawks is not a high-schooler") and switching from Jin to Twice, intentional? Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into it, but it came across as premeditative. Though, I tend to focus too much into details sometimes, to the point I might miss the bigger picture, which... my bad.

Thought I had more to ask, but again, you elabrorated on the topic so well there's not much to ask about - at least not from me. Most of the questions I had were already answered in deep details.

Again, if you wish to not answer, especially the first question since it's more a bit of speculation and you might not like to give possible conclusions before the story ends, it's completely fine.

Hi, thank you for the thoughtful ask! Let's get into it - because I know that 6,500 word meta is a lot and something to chew over, so I really don't mind discussing it.

I am of two minds on this - I strongly believe Hawks is mentally ill, and repressing it, so his "actual" nature is a bit lost to us unless we see through the crops. However, you're right in that Keigo was actively going against his own nature and sense of self to kill Jin.

That’s the story Hawks and Twice are being used to tell by Horikoshi! To kill Jin, Hawks had to cast away sentiment, feelings, compassion for Jin, and so he did, at the same time sacrificed his own humanity to do so.

The kind of heroism that asks Hawks to do these things is inhumane. It’s the kind that expects people to kill the child in themselves, kill the friend, kill the compassion, and kill the person to become what it believes is a hero. 

A snippet from one of my metas on this topic - that Jin's name meaning humanity, that Jin constantly being shown as so utterly human, was a good way to introduce this idea that the "heroism" that created Hawks was inhumane. Keigo was just a boy who wanted to help people, after all.

I do think there will be some closure with Keigo and Jin. While I foresee a breakdown first for Keigo, I have a feeling Keigo and his clones will be used at the end to turn a tide for the heroes, completing the "all became heroes" aspect we're clearly headed for. I do think Keigo apologizing, admitting he was wrong, and probably reiterating what he actually felt is the best possible end to this arc. Stripped of all his protections, down to his "truth", I think Keigo can actually come across sincere this time around. When Jin and him speak not as Hero and Villain but as just two men.

Congratulations! You're the first person who has ever noticed I do this in several years. I can't say I managed to not slip up in the meta, but yes, it's absolutely premediated. I make a clear distinction when I wish to speak about Hawks and Keigo in meta AND ESPECIALLY fic. In fic I'm extremely careful with what I call Keigo and when I make the switch and honestly use it as a literary device - for example when Hawks grows so disillusioned with heroism in Chapter 2 of my fic Minutes, I made the switch to Keigo. In meta, I don't do it as much, but I did it more this time around. Like I said, this meta was really special. I've wanted to write it since Spring 2020. The emphasis on Hawks and Keigo as separate identities is central to this idea of who Hawks really is, so I decided to explore it.

I can't. The smile on Toga's face when Jin saved her and the shock and the pain when she realized what was happening. The way Compress stops completely, freezes. The way Jin dies smiling.

Genuinely, fuck everyone who says the League of Villains is not a friend group/family.

They might not be the healthiest one, might be complicated, but there was love and friendship and grief and pain. There was happiness too, a sort they didn't think they could experience again. Loyalty and company, joy and comprehension. Anger amd hurt, there was life. They were alive.

Dead by society, but alive together.

1) Shouto is the only being in the entire planet that can't be hurt by Touya, thanks to his new powers.

2) Not only that, but he's the only one capable of enduring his flames AND applying his quirk as a countermeasure to make sure Touya won't hurt himself too.

That means Dabi will never be too much for his little brother. There's nothing Dabi could throw at Shouto that Shouto couldn't stand. It is, Dabi found someone able to support him through the good and the bad without hurting himself or the other.

Think about that for a minute.

Friendly reminder that both Tenko and Touya fought back even after losing everything.

Tenko walked for days, alone and covered in blood through the streets, before AFO found him. He was beaten up and ignored, mostly because he looked scary, even if he was just a child.

Touya ran away after three years of being in coma. He rejected the idea of having a better body and made his way home, even with how weak he was. And then he found the same abuse, even worst if anything, happening in a room beside his altar.

Tenko and Touya were both full of regret. They never wanted to hurt their families. They didn't want to end up like that. They loved their families, their siblings and parents. They wanted to be good, they wanted to be enough.

And when Tenko tried to reach Kotaro to get protected, Kotaro hit him in the face.

And when Touya tried to ask his father for a day off to be with him, Enji only told him he was too busy.

And when they tried to get help, they realized society was rotten. No one wanted to help, there was only the cycle of violence. They were merely victims, more victims, two victims. And they were dead and gone, for society. Two little kids lost in a sea because it happens, sometimes heroes can't save them, it doesn't matter if normal people could have helped them a lot, because normal people doesn't have to help each other, that's for pro-heroes, right?

Now please remember Dabi's reaction to seeing how Toga's parents cleaned up her entire room, erasing her existence, before leaving the house. How there were writings everywhere remembering her how bad she was, how little she was worth, how much she deserved everything she was going through.

Please remember how he burned down that house and immediately went to her, to remind her that he did care, that Twice cared, that the League cared. And please remember that in that moment, she called him Touya and told him he was in fact very kind.

DUDES, i had a dream that princess Tutu got a reboot and the story got expanded and it was a little creepier. Like Drosselmeyer sent these weird creatures to follow Duck around and she was not having a good time at all. She would spend a lot of time by the lake/pond she came from and she would express her love through art like drawing and even sculpting. So maybe her school was like interdisciplinary where the students take courses for their main focus like her taking several ballet classes, but also taking other courses like these art classes where she was actually pretty decent. But she went from painting Mytho to painting Fakir and her crush on him was more developed and a little more obvious. She was so cute. There was a forest that went past her pond and it was pretty creepy because the forest had all these trees with fallen leaves so they were pointy and frightening and Duck ran into the forest to get away from the creatures Drosselmeyer sent after her, so she got lost and couldn't find her way out for a while. This caused Fakir to worry about her and he sets out to go look for her because he can sense something is wrong. So he takes his horse and sword and goes into the enchanted forest to look for her. The series was SO much fun!!! The story was just like Ohmg!!!! Duck got lost!!! Duck is in danger!!! Who will save her? The prince she once loved or the knight she is falling for?

Hehehe i had a dream that Shouto and Izuku kissed in canon. It was a really quick peck on the lips and it caught Izuku off guard, but Shouto did it like it was normal. We all lost our minds and there were gif sets on tumblr, it kinda crashed ahahaha. But yeah tododeku really did that.

according to the song "Gaston" Gaston would eat "Four-dozen eggs every morning" four dozen is 48, and 48 x 7 is 336, so that's 336 eggs every week. now there's 52 weeks in a year, so 336 x 52 is 17,472 eggs a year. as an adult he now eats five dozen, so it's fairly safe to assume he stuck around the four dozen mark for quite a while, let's go with a decade. so in the timespan of about ten years as a child/teen Gaston ate at least (because remember, this is only counting breakfast) 174,720 eggs. when he became an older teen though, he probably would have increased his egg intake and would have gotten closer to his current five dozen, and to skip a few steps if we assume he's been eating five dozen eggs for about a decade as well, then that's 218,400, which when combined with the previous decade means that comes to a total of 393,120 eggs for breakfast in Gaston's lifetime (not counting when he was even younger and couldn't handle four dozen eggs)

imagine a "humans are space orcs" story where humans and aliens can't understand the other's language, and it's told from an alien's POV. however, the twist is the alien doesn't call humans "humans" nor do they ever specify their own species. the reader has no idea the MC is an alien, or that the human's a human until close to the end when they're able to communicate some and the human's like "i can't believe i'm one of the first humans to meet an alien"

the Truman Show is such a good movie. the attention to detail throughout the entire movie is just amazing! Marlon stocking the vending machine while talking to Truman, but then quickly taking them out when Truman's not looking. Truman needing to take vitamins because he's never been in the sun. all the funky camera angles, and how Meryl frequently smiles directly at them. the way all the "background characters" just act so plain weird! when Truman starts to realize something's up, and steps out of his routine, they all continue playing their parts even though in reality people would stare at the man running and shouting! if someone driving almost ran into someone who was being careless, they would hop out of the car and go what are you doing! people would grumble and complain that the bus wasn't working, not quickly get off the bus as if they were waiting for the announcement! the lack of headrests in the vehicles so they can get better camera angles. the way everything is just too crisp, and clean to be real. i just love this movie so much

1. Back in the deviant art days I think I can consider myself a part of the fma fandom back then. But as far as really deeply discussing things and caring enough to pay close attention to details and make predictions and theories etc., BNHA is the first one.

2. 299: Hawks’s backstory explains a lot about his actions we saw from his introduction up to that point. I would say it’s a good chapter in the big picture, but unfortunately there is 0 follow up on his one-sided attachment to Endeavor, so far. I’m still waiting. 300-302: mm, my initial opinion was bad, but that’s because the fandom reaction worried me into feeling bad about them. Looking back, I’m pretty happy with Touya’s backstory and how everything panned out. I like that it wasn’t just another Shouto situation, I like how complicated and messy it is, because it makes Touya as a character a lot more interesting to follow until the end. The negative feelings I have are more so just me waiting for something to finally happen with Endeavor. He keeps dodging responsibility, which is in character for him, but I’m waiting for the story to make him stop dodging. I can feel that we’re getting there. There is literally no other next step that can be taken with the Todoroki arc, with Endeavor and Touya and Shouto. The hospital chapters don’t bother me. What bothers me is the follow up after, which (much like with Hawks) I’m just waiting to see finally happen. 303: I really didn’t like this chapter. Not when it came out, and not now. Mostly because if Hawks was going to insert himself into the Todoroki situation, it’d be nice for it to actually have some sort of impact. At the time, the framing around him wanting to continue supporting Endeavor seemed like it would imply that Hawks would make sure Touya specifically never got another chance to make his dad face him. At any costs. Unfortunately I was let down and the ominous framing and Hawks’s fucked decision to back Endeavor of all people all amounted to….nothing. Nothing consequential. Again, still waiting to see how this plays out because the manga isn’t over and Hori’s writing style sometimes delivers on things, just at fucking awful pacing—same with him and Twice—but currently it’s just ಠ_ಠ ugh

3. I don’t have much of an opinion on it like, quality wise. I like the chapter, seeing AFO’s face finally was exciting. Being right about him making a comeback with a face reveal was REALLY exciting. It’s too early to tell how good of a chapter it is in the big picture, and there isn’t any follow up on it yet. But I think there will be. What I think is gonna happen as a result of it though is that with Kurogiri AFO is gonna somehow be put in Shigaraki’s vicinity, Spinner will be put in Shigaraki’s vicinity, Aizawa and Midoriya will end up with him there too, and things will get worse. And I think Aizawa will put a stop to AFO’s rewind, landing him permanently as the final challenge for everyone.

i am SURE you have gotten endless asks of people talking about hox and for that i am truly sorry but not sorry enough to not dump this in your inbox </3 i have been malding about the gunga villa fight ever since it came out and what horikoshi did to both twice + hox's characters...it feels kind of silly to say this now but i used to kind of have faith that horikoshi wouldnt fuck up the tdrk family drama by giving endvr any sort of redemption arc and for a second there i thought he was doing pretty good at it (i would have preferred endvr die in a fire but as an abuse victim the way horikoshi was going about it felt... respectful enough) and then!!! AND THEN...i always had mixed feelings about twice's death bc hori's weird like. running gag that hes in love w/ toga always put me off but his character is also incredibly relatable and like. idk he tugs on my heartstrings a little (a lot) but the... idk the implications of having hox ultimately kill him after he refused to stop struggling+their entire exchange prior to dabi showing up was like. i agree a lot with that post you made talking about how horikoshi could (and SHOULD) have taken hox's character in an entirely different way after that point instead of just having him support a serial abuser and keep going on like what endvr did doesnt matter because he feels bad about it. personally i think its incredibly unrealistic for hox to just...not only turn a blind eye but also continue to actively support endeavor especially considering his own past? like sure there could have been a tasteful look into having to re-compartmentalize his perception of this man who was not only his idol growing up, to a colleague, to an ally with the new information he now has from dabi that shows like. hey the only difference between this man and your own piece of shit father is that one of them is publicly regarded as a hero and that the system you are sacrificing so much of yourself to uphold is likely full of these people, and protects them in the interest of maintaining a status quo that continues to trample on people like jin and dabi, all but forces them to become villains to survive and then profits off of killing and incarcerating them. the current hawks is just so unrecognizable to me at this point that the only thing that keeps me from wanting to see him eat shit is the emotional attachment i have to the character he was like, 200 chapters ago that just so happens to share his appearance. twice didnt have to die but like god if horikoshi was going to kill him off anyway i wish he would have made his death have more of an impact on hawks' character instead of the bullshit in like chap. 299 where hawks is like: man i want to be more like this guy who i killed. let me go honor his memory by supporting this serial abuser and overall resident piece of shit for No Conceivable Reason. sorry for dumping this in your inbox i am a little too embarrassed to care this much about bnha on main;;
