The Smackdown GM gets some exciting news about a promotion as well as getting involved in another incident where she finds Waller, Theory, and Knight coming to her rescue.

The arena is buzzing with excitement for Smackdown's season premiere tonight. All of the big names have been scheduled to show up for the show, including your boss, Triple H.

"Adam, will you stop pacing like that?" You ask Pearce from your desk as he paces endlessly around the room. "You're making me dizzy."

"Sorry, Y/N." Pearce comes to a stop in front of your desk and fixes his unkempt tie. "How are you not nervous about tonight?" He asks you. "Hunter said in his email that he has an announcement that had to do with both of us." He reminds you.

You shrug and tap your pen against your desk. "So? Why are you worried about it? Hunter didn't mention that it was anything bad did he?" You ask. "And as far as you and I know, we haven't done anything wrong. Have we?"

"No." Adam shakes his head. "But still,"

"Just relax, Pearce." You flash him an assuring smile. "I'm going to head down to the production truck to make sure they have everything ready for the show. You go ahead and get ready for Hunter, and I'll meet up with you later, okay?" You rise to your feet.

Adam nods and walks back over to his desk. "Alright. But please don't be late to meet with Hunter." He asks you.

"Mhm. Try not to have a heart attack while I'm gone, Pearce." You muse before walking out the door.

You head down to the production truck and check to make sure that everything is in order for the night. On your way back to the office, you pass by the backstage interview setup and see Lexie interviewing Carlito and Bobby Lashley. You watch for a moment and are about to walk away when suddenly Montez and Angelo come up from behind the set and attack Carlito.

"Shit!" You curse and hurry over to the set before any serious damage can be done.

Lexie flies past you to get out of the way and you jump between Bobby wielding a chair and Carlito laid out on the floor. "Hey! Put it down!" You shout at Bobby, your hands held out in front of you.

Lashley stops mid-swing and you flinch but stand your ground. He lowers the chair to his side and glares at you. But when you remain unmoved, he storms off with Montez and Angelo.

"Someone get medical over here now!" You shout at a few bystanding stagehands.

The medical staff arrived a few minutes later and help Carlito out. You take a moment to compose yourself and get ready to hurry back to the office before you're late. Zelina Vega and Bayley interrupt you arguing about what went down at Fastlane a week ago.

"She got in the way and almost cost Iyo her title!" Bayley barks at you.

"Well, she wasn't even supposed to be down there!" Zelina whines back.

Frustrated, and knowing that you're about to be late, you glare at both women. "Enough!" You shout. "I want both of you out in the ring in ten minutes! You two can solve this little dispute out there."

Bayley and Iyo both nod and head off for their match. With the dispute settled, you hurry back to the office before it's too late.

When you arrive at the office, Pearce is standing by his desk and talking to LA Knight, Austin Theory, and Grayson Waller. Confused as to why Pearce would be talking with the three men that you're usually tasked with dealing with, you head over to them.

"What are you three doing here?" You walk over to the group. "Pearce? What's going on?? You ask Adam.

"Y/N!" Grayson and Austin turn around in unison when they hear your voice.

Knight turns around as well and sets a tentative hand on your arm. "Y/N, sweetheart, are you alright?" He asks you.

"Yeah, we heard that Bobby Lashley almost smashed you out with a chair," Austin adds.

"What the hell happened out there?" Grayson asks you.

You look at Pearce, realizing that the reason Knight, Waller, and Theory are in the office is because they came looking for you. "Lashley, Ford, and Dawkins attacked Carlito while he was doing his interview with Lexie." You explain. "I stepped in to ensure they didn't seriously hurt him, and Lashley had a chair in his hands."

"That neanderthal didn't hit you with the chair, did he?" Knight asks you.

"No, he stopped himself and put it down." You shake your head.

Austin and Grayson share a look of relief and Knight nods. Pearce on the other hand, looks like he's about to come undone. "Right, I told you three that she was fine." Adam gestures to you. "Now can you three please leave?" He asks.

"Now hold on a minute!" Knight shakes his head. "We ain't done here."

"Yeah." Grayson agrees. "Bobby Lashley can't just go walking around unchecked after almost hurting Y/N like that." He insists.

"Not while we're here." Austin agrees.

You smile to yourself at the boy's protectiveness of you, but you know that Pearce is already stressed enough about tonight. You put a hand on Grayson and Austin's shoulders and usher the pair over to your desk with Knight at your side.

"Alright you three, I appreciate the concern for me." You smile at the trio. "It's sweet you know you guys care enough to co-exist when it comes to me. But Pearce and I have an important meeting that's supposed to start any minute now. So will you three please head back to the locker room? For me?" You ask them.

"Yeah, alright." Knight nods. "But this conversation ain't over, sweetheart." He assures you.

Grayson and Austin nod in agreement. "Yeah, Lashley's going to get his." Austin huffs.

"You just leave it to us, babe." Grayson nods.

The trio finally leaves so you and Pearce are alone again. You lean on your desk and Pearce walks over to you.

"Are you really alright?" Pearce asks you.

"Yes, Adam, I'm fine." You assure him with a nod. "If I wasn't then I'm pretty sure that Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits would be in an ambulance by now." You joke with a laugh.

Pearce flashes a hint of an amused smile. "Yes, those three do make quite the intimidating trio." He muses. "It's a pain in the ass. Sometimes I wish that I was just in charge of Raw, you know?" He asks you. "You're more than capable of handling Smackdown by yourself, Y/N. Especially with those three at your side."

"What a coincidence." Hunter suddenly appears in the doorway.

"Hunter!" Pearce snaps to attention. "I didn't hear you come in."

You stop leaning on your desk and smile at Hunter as he shuts the door. "Hunter, it's good to see you." You shake his hand firmly.

"It's always a pleasure to see you, Y/N." Hunter nods. "And you as well, Adam. The two of you have been doing phenomenal work on both Raw and Smackdown." He adds.

"Thank you, sir." You nod, and Pearce does the same.

Hunter sits down behind your desk and Pearce pulls a chair out so the two of you can sit from across from him. "As I'm sure the two of you know, Survivor Series is coming up as our next paid live event." He reminds you. "Well, I've made the decision to bring back the brands war to boost our ratings for the end of the year. So, I'm splitting the two of you up. One for Raw, one for Smackdown. And I'm doing you the further courtesy of letting you choose." He explains.

You and Pearce share a look. It's like all of your prayers are being answered. You both turn back to Hunter and you smile at him. "I think I'll stay here on Smackdown, if that's okay with you, Pearce?" You look at him with a joking smile.

"That's fine with me." Pearce nods with a knowing smile.

"Perfect!" Hunter claps his hands together happily. "I look forward to seeing the two of you work to make some friendly competition." He shakes both your hands again before making his exit from the office.

Pearce laughs when Hunter is gone and you can't help but smile while you text your group chat with Knight, Waller, and Theory about the exciting news. You also mean to check up on them to see what revenge plan they've managed to come up with.

"Good luck on Raw, Pearce." You smile at him.

"And good luck to you as well, Y/N." Pearce agrees. "You and your harem of boyfriends." He jokes.

Cody Gakpo has perfect Liverpool mentor in Roberto Firmino — Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo has the perfect mentor in departing “legend” Roberto Firmino.

The January signing from PSV Eindhoven lit up Sunday’s 7-0 demolition of Manchester United as he struck twice during a dazzling attacking display from Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Gakpo flourished in the false nine role that belonged to Firmino for so much of Klopp’s reign and Van Dijk is convinced that working with the Brazilian on a daily basis is rubbing off on his fellow Dutchman.

“It’s a very difficult position to play, but he learns from one of the best each and every day with Bobby Firmino,” Van Dijk said.

“I think that position of a false nine is Bobby Firmino’s. He’s the one that showed over the years how difficult it is for any other player to perform it, and also how hard it is for others to defend it.

“The winter isn’t an easy time to come to a club but Cody is settling in very well. He has to keep going, keep the confidence, keep the belief. I think he will be fine for this club. He’s a fantastic player.”

The commanding centre-back was delighted by Liverpool’s relentlessness in the second half as they repeatedly tore United apart. Darwin Nunez scored two headers and Mohamed Salah also helped himself to a double as the Egyptian eclipsed Robbie Fowler’s club record of 128 Premier League goals.

“Very clinical. I think a lot of the goals were world class,” he added.

“The first one, the whole build up was outstanding. Cody cutting in on to his right foot, a quality finish.

“Darwin is causing chaos all the time with his speed, his passion and also with quality. And Mo showed why he is so important for this football club. He’s so influential with everything that’s been going on in a positive way over the years and hopefully he can keep that going.

“For him to be the all-time Premier League top scorer for Liverpool is something no-one should take for granted. He definitely shouldn’t and I won’t. He should not just brush it off because it’s something special.”

The biggest show of emotion was reserved for when Firmino swept home Liverpool’s seventh goal — two days after informing the club that he will leave when his contract expires this summer.

“You can’t deny how important he’s been for the success that we’ve had,” Van Dijk said.

“But as a human being as well, he’s a great guy and I wish him obviously all the best after the summer. For now, we still have targets to reach and he knows that and he wants to make sure that we fulfil them as well. He’s been so influential and he should definitely be remembered as one of the legends.”

A historic win was built on a solid defensive display as Klopp’s men kept a fifth successive clean sheet in the Premier League. However, Van Dijk says it will count for little if they don’t kick on and secure a top-four finish.

“I think especially the last three games gave me personally a very good feeling, the way we committed to defending and enjoying that clean sheet. Even when you are 4-0, 5-0 up, I think that’s the message to make sure that you don’t concede and stay focused. That was very good,” he said.

“We shouldn’t just brush this off like it’s any other day. We won 7-0 after the difficult season that we’ve had. You should be able to stand still and enjoy that a little bit, but on Monday it will be gone. Then the focus will turn towards Bournemouth (away on Saturday). That’s the reality and that’s the life we all live.

“It will be tough: 12.30, early kick-off, always difficult there, small stadium. We should be full of confidence but let’s be humble and ready.

“We should not take these results for granted but there are many more games to play in order to get what we want. In this case, that’s Champions League football.”

Consumer Guide / No.119 / Q & A with writer / author Greg Lansdowne, with Mark Watkins.

MW: Teenage Kicks. Tell me about some of the books, comics, records, TV and radio you enjoyed during your teenage years…

GL: The media I consumed, and enjoyed, during my formative years in the 1980s continue to shape my career – so I have a lot to thank them for. My earliest reading material were comics such as; Beano, Dandy, Buster, Whizzer and Chips, and Roy of the Rovers alongside any football magazine going in the children’s sector (Shoot! and Match being the mainstays).

From there, I graduated to publications such as World Soccer, Wisden Cricket Monthly and, when it came out in my late teens, 90 Minutes. I had a voracious appetite for magazines – and still do – so read as much as possible relating to my interests.

As far as records go, the first seven inch single I bought was, Take On Me, by a-ha. My first album was, Hunting High And Low, by a-ha. There’s obviously a pattern evolving there and I have bought every release by a-ha since (not to mention writing a book about them which was published in 2016).

Besides watching any TV coverage of football and cricket (and plenty of other sports in the ‘80s) my favourite programme was Grange Hill – an all-time classic which stands the test of time. It’s one of the few of my childhood loves that I haven’t written about... but there is still plenty of time!

With a lack of live football coverage during the ‘80s (there was far more cricket available to watch) supporters were very reliant on the radio when not attending matches. BBC Radio 2 with voices such as Peter Jones, Bryon Butler and Jimmy Armfield talking you through the games was manna from heaven.

Saturday afternoon broadcasts in London were provided by LBC in the early part of the decade (Jeff Stelling was the host for a period) before Jonathan Pearce, with a stellar list of summarisers including Bobby Moore, Terry Neill and Alan Mullery became required listening on Capital Gold Sport from the 1988-89 season onwards.

MW: What was your first football sticker book? How did this particular love eventually lead to writing three books about collecting?

GL: My first Panini sticker album was Football 79 and so began a lifetime’s love affair with football stickers (especially those by Panini). My brother, Billy, who was a professional footballer with West Ham at the time and had collected FKS stickers as a child, bought me the album and subsequent packets - getting to within one sticker of finishing the album. Although I was a little young to be taking much interest in following scores/a specific team in early 1979 I was fascinated by the badge designs, variously-hued kits and garish haircuts. I became hooked on collecting and football soon after.

MW: What football team do you support? Tell me about your first and last matches...

GL: As I mentioned above, my brother was a professional at West Ham at the time of my first Panini album and my Dad just happened to be reserve team manager - 25 years into his career as player and coach at West Ham. So you’d imagine my answer would be West Ham. Except, just a few weeks into the first season I began to take a real interest in following games (1979-80) my Dad lost his job at West Ham. Out of loyalty to him, I didn’t feel it was appropriate to support West Ham, so I had to find another team. My Mum told me my Dad had supported Arsenal as a boy so there was the solution to my problem! My first game was 4th October 1980 v Leicester (1-0 to the Arsenal!) and I started going regularly with my Dad from the mid-80s until his last game in 2014 (the FA Cup Final v Hull, a good game to finish on). By then, I had three young children to look after and my Dad preferred to follow from his armchair which is generally what I do now, though my kids allow me out to get out to watch a few times a season!

MW: If Brian Clough had been appointed England manager in 1977 instead of Ron Greenwood, what players do you think Clough’s England side would have included?

GL: As ITV4 has been showing The Big Match Revisited from 1979-80 recently it was interesting to note Brian Clough recruited both Charlie George and Stan Bowles at Nottingham Forest for periods during that season. Both were past their best by that stage but Clough was still willing to give them a chance at one of the leading clubs in Europe – no other club of that repute was willing to do the same by then. Therefore, it is likely he would have similarly given those two – and other mercurial talents – a further chance with England had he taken the job in 1977. Judging by his famous comment about Trevor Brooking ahead of the 1980 FA Cup Final (‘floats like a bee, stings like a butterfly’) it might have been less good news for the West Ham midfielder!

MW: What football rules would you like to see changed back and why?

GL: I’m not convinced the removal of the away goals rule in European club competition has been a positive move, but I guess it depends on what end of the result you are on! It can, on occasion, make teams settle for penalties in extra time rather than go for a goal.

I believe the opportunity to use five subs in a Premier League match gives the bigger clubs, with their larger squads, an unfair advantage – as if they didn’t have enough already. Just when one of the smaller clubs think they might have nicked a point, on come another couple of £30m players to potentially impact the game. If a manager can’t change a game with three subs I don’t see why he should get another couple of goes.

MW: Share your thoughts on the recent passing of Dickie Davies and John Motson?

GL: In that ‘70s/’80s era, with comparatively little TV sports coverage compared to now, you are talking about two of the biggest names of The Age.

Saturday afternoons would be spent switching between Grandstand on BBC and Dickie Davies on ITV’s World of Sport.

Then, when it came to football commentary, the three best-known were John Motson, Barry Davies and Brian Moore.

A lot of presenters/commentators these days make it ever more apparent how great the likes of Davies and Motson were at their respective jobs.

MW: What other sports do you like?

GL: In the ‘80s, I was into watching most sports (as well as football and cricket I also watched a lot of snooker, darts and tennis) but once there was wall-to-wall football and cricket available there just wasn’t enough time to devote beyond those two.

Essex CCC is my county so I was lucky to have grown up during an era when they were one of the best county cricket teams around – probably only Middlesex could contest that claim – with Graham Gooch, John Lever, Ken McEwan, Neil Foster, Derek Pringle, Keith Fletcher and many other top cricketers.

I was even luckier to then become Essex’s first ever Communications Manager in 2003, working full-time at the club for six seasons and continuing to edit their Yearbook and other publications for several years after.

I also co-wrote a book about Essex – 60 Classic Essex Matches – in 2011. I enjoyed my time working in cricket – also freelancing for the ICC and the IPL as well as publishing my own cricket magazine, dedicated to Asian cricket, in 2009-10 – and would love to get back into it again in some capacity one day.

I’m still a big fan of Essex and England but am at a stage in my life, with young kids, where it is again mostly viewed from an armchair.

MW: Day at the seaside or a countryside picnic? Pick one and describe the desired experience.

GL: Both sound appealing - but right now the thought of a quiet beach, the radio on Test Match Special and a bit of beach cricket would go down a treat. Obviously the sun is shining at the seaside, England are 300-2 and there’s a nice bottle or two on the go!

MW: Aside from writing books and features, what are your other interests?

GL: Beyond my young family, I love nostalgia – sometimes too much for my wife’s liking! – so that forms a large part of my leisure, as well as work, in terms of researching subject matter for writing books and articles. I have become a proactive part of the retro-football community by selling my books and vintage items at Fairs/Shows. The football card and shirt fan bases have grown exponentially in recent years and I think the nostalgia market in general has a potential for significant growth.

By expanding not only can that be to the financial gain of those looking to sell items but, more importantly, it can also tell the stories of sportsmen and women long forgotten by many but with so much of value to impart. I am also a big advocate of sports nostalgia as a power for good in re-engaging those suffering with dementia, depression or loneliness. Charities do exist in this sphere but there are many more people who would benefit from being integrated.

Having worked on the Panini UK Football Sticker Collections 1978-85 – The Complete Albums that came out towards the end of last year, I will also be assisting Bloomsbury on the follow-up Panini UK Football Sticker Collections 1986-93 – The Complete Albums, published in October (2023).

I have two other books in the pipeline, including a player autobiography - more of which will be revealed on my social media channels in due course – and also write regularly for publications such as Backpass and Retro Pop.

I will be selling my books and other football-related memorabilia at various Football Fairs over the course of this year and beyond. It’s an exciting time to be in the football nostalgia space.

SMACKDOWN 13/10/23

Shenanigans!

I haven't watch Smackdown or any WWE shows since Wrestlemania. There's a reason and maybe some day I'll write about it. But for now let's talk about what went down on Smackdown.

The story here is that the Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns has returned after being off for a few weeks. John Cena opened up the show and came face-to-face with Reigns. Both men had a great exchange of words until Cena presents LA Knight as the man who deserves a shot at Roman. This is the main problem with this show. The Wrestlers are making/demanding the matches whereas the people in charge do or say nothing. It's Carlito who asks Bobby for a match tonight and it's also Zelina Vega who demands a match with Bayley. I mean what is happening? If the wrestlers don't ask for matches on the night, then what else was meant to be planned for tonight?

Speaking of people in charge, HHH comes to the the ring and announces Nick Aldis as the new General Manager of Smackdown while Adam Pearce becomes the GM for Raw. I was kind of hoping for a bigger introduction for Aldis, but the segment was still a lot of fun thanks to the nuclear heat Dominik got.

Another backstage segment I quite enjoyed was the meeting between Jade Gargil and Charlotte Flair. The energy between these two is magnetic. There's a hilarious moment when HHH appears behind Jade with a smile across his face. Go back and watch him.

The wrestling itself wasn't anything great. ALOT of shenanigans was involved. Pretty Deadly won because they faked an injury, Iyo caused a distraction so Bayley could win, and Jimmy Uso got involved in the main event. It's all too much. The Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Match was miles better than all other matches on tonight's card. Everything in that bout felt smooth.

Crown Jewel is a few weeks away, so my takeaway is that Jade may debut on that show and it looks like it will be LA Knight versus Roman Reigns will be the main event to the card with Reigns going over.

Overall it wasn't a bad show. I just think WWE need to focus more on the wrestling aspect.
