head's up for all my international peeps: Book Depository announced on Twitter that they're closing on 26 April 2023.
per their tweet: "You can still place orders until midday (12pm BST) on 26 April and we will continue to deliver your purchases and provide support for any order issues until 23 June 2023."
preorders for books that come out before April 26 should be okay. preorders for books that come out after that - or whose dates are pushed back by their publishers - you may want to cancel, but they do say they'll refund you if they're unable to ship your order when the day comes.
for more details, see their FAQ page about the closure
the good news is, it looks like Blackwell's (UK) now offers free international shipping. here's their shipping page for details.
hopefully this means Book Depository closing won't hit as hard as it otherwise would have. free international shipping makes books so much more accessible to so many more readers.
Be warned guys. Book Depository is closing down, and I’m not sure how that affects preorders.
If, like me, you’ve ordered any of the special editions of books such as MDZS, you might want to look into seeing if it’s possible to get a copy any other way incase they won’t ship out. I’m personally a little upset/worried myself as I had the special edition on preorder since it was first announced last year, and there aren’t a lot of places online where I live that I trust to stock it anymore.
Please be aware, especially since I know many of you were preordering as and when a lot of new danmei titles were being announced.
If you were planning on buying any books and supporting authors that we have posted about previously, it’s kind of your last chance order the books.
If you’ve been a follower for a while, you’ll know that this blog was a Book Depository affiliate but within this week I will be switching the links on the blog to Blackwell’s which also offers free shipping world wide so the books I post about will still be accessible to all.
This is an irregular post for this side, of tumblr, but I have to say this: fuck Amazon. As of April 26th, Amazon is shuttering Book Depository after 20 plus years in business to keep their goddamn profit margins.
I’ve tried to stick with local stores or at least domestic chains when I can (I’m not American), but Book Depository has been essential for tracking down rarer books or ones that weren’t available via the usual merchants. For the hard copy book trade, this is a horrific blow and one that may never fully be recovered from. Likewise... Amazon stands directly to benefit from this with their digital book trade via Kindle, and at the cost of the jobs of the fine people who kept this operation running no less. Likewise, for authors who operate independently or via smaller platforms/publishers, this is a devastating loss.
I know this is more than most, but in the past 5-10 years I’ve been reading 15-30 books a year and it’s been the truest anchor I’ve had in both good times and the lowest and most complex of eras. I tried digital books at one point, but I migrated back to hard copies pretty quickly.
So yeah, fuck Amazon and everything they stand for.
book depository closing is not about small bookshops and fucks up readers, at least from latam, in a way you cannot imagine. we get 1% of books the rest do and there's no fucking way to buy them. book depository was so acsesible for us, and hear my word closing it the only thing that will do is raise pirating.
I have just cancelled all my SevenSeas pre-orders through Book Depository.
I have used BD for years, and they've provided good service on the whole. But I got fed up after three pre-orders were cancelled by them.
In each case, I ordered months and months in advance, eagerly anticipating the release of each book. The book's publishing date came - and sure enough, it was listed for sale on the website, but my pre-order was listed as "awaiting publication".
When I asked why the title was listed for sale where my pre-order hadn't been honoured, I was given a bullshitty politician's non-answer.
It smacks to me of dishonesty. I mean, if I pre-order something, I am paying in good faith for something to eventually come to me. By placing a pre-order I am a) handing over money to BD's account where it accrues interest and b) gives them an idea of how many volumes they need to get order the publisher for distribution. For the privilege of this, they charge a greatly reduced sum; the cost of the book when it is listed for sale on the publishing date is often a lot more expensive.
So actually, this whole business of not honouring pre-orders also seems to be a price and money-gouging exercise. I suspect they deliberately don't fill pre-orders in order to force those who have pre-ordered to order the full-priced item.
I'm so disgusted.
Seeking other distributors who will send to my location. (Which also sucks, because it's not mainland USA and is often $$$ to send to.)
WARNING: Don't pre-order your SevenSeas danmei novels through Book Depository. Just don't. Find another distributor.
Anyone who isn't aware, Book Depository has been, from what I can tell, one of the main ways people in the US have gotten books only available in the UK, and it has frequent sales, making it easier to get cheaper books.
For people who want UK books, or UK editions, I have great news.
Blackwells has free shipping to the US, and typically has lower prices than you'd get in the US (sometimes a lot lower).
So, go forth and get your UK books (from an actual bookstore, not fucking amazon)
Since Book Depository is closing down, I might suggest OpenTrolley as the alternative for people around SEA (especially Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore). The price could get a bit more expensive than Book Depository but the shipping fee is rather cheap so far (I’m from Indonesia)
