- “Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90” to screen June 11-14 in select movie houses
Willie Nelson turned 90 but once.
But he celebrated the milestone with two all-star concerts April 29 (the big day) and 30 (90+1) at the Hollywood Bowl. And those two, six-hour blowouts have been distilled into a “two-hour-plus” film headed to theaters in June.
“Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90,” features “a selection of the most memorable performances and once-in-a-lifetime collaborations” and will be shown in select movie theaters June 11-14.
The movie’s website promises performances by “Willie Nelson, Allison Russell, Billy Strings, Bobby Weir, Booker T. Jones, Buddy Cannon and many more …” A photo montage on the site includes images of Dave Matthews, Snoop Dogg, Jack Johnson, Nathaniel Rateliff and Margo Price among others.
Lecture 11: “Green Onions” (1962) (Live on Shindig, 1966) - Booker T. & the M.G.s: One of the first racially integrated soul groups, Booker T. and the M.G.s. (fronted by keyboardist Booker T. Jones) served as the house band at Stax Records (Memphis, Tennessee) during the 1960s. During that time, they played with dozens of artists (including Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Rufus Thomas) on hundreds of recordings and helped to shape the Southern soul sound. The band found success on their own with songs like “Green Onions” (1962) from the album of the same name. "Green Onions" was the only instrumental to rank on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (2004).
The Mad Lads - You Don't Have to Shop Around (1966)
The Mad Lads were a Stax vocal group, but on this tune they lean heavily to the doo-wop side of things. But it’s an unusual sound; with Isaac Hayes on piano, Booker T. on organ, and John Gary Williams’ lead vocals, they created a one of kind song, perfect for late night listening.
Would you believe Booker T. Jones has just released three new versions of his 1962 (!) hit “Green Onions”? Jazz version above, rock and country versions below.
