“When she applied to run in the Boston Marathon in 1966 they rejected her saying: “Women are not physiologically able to run a marathon, and we can’t take the liability.” Then exactly 50 years ago today, on the day of the marathon, Bobbi Gibb hid in the bushes and waited for the race to begin. When about half of the runners had gone past she jumped in. She wore her brother’s Bermuda shorts, a pair of boy’s sneakers, a bathing suit, and a sweatshirt. As she took off into the swarm of runners, Gibb started to feel overheated, but she didn’t remove her hoodie. “I knew if they saw me, they were going to try to stop me,” she said. “I even thought I might be arrested.” It didn’t take long for male runners in Gibb’s vicinity to realize that she was not another man. Gibb expected them to shoulder her off the road, or call out to the police. Instead, the other runners told her that if anyone tried to interfere with her race, they would put a stop to it. Finally feeling secure and assured, Gibb took off her sweatshirt. As soon as it became clear that there was a woman running in the marathon, the crowd erupted—not with anger or righteousness, but with pure joy, she recalled. Men cheered. Women cried. By the time she reached Wellesley College, the news of her run had spread, and the female students were waiting for her, jumping and screaming. The governor of Massachusetts met her at the finish line and shook her hand. The first woman to ever run the marathon had finished in the top third.”

I work for Women’s Lunch Place on the Direct Care team, where we build trusting relationships with women experiencing homelessness and poverty. We are the first to welcome new women into our community.

We meet them where they are, treat them with dignity and respect, and learn what we can without being pushy or requiring any information. We also gently introduce them to other programming at Women’s Lunch Place, like addiction recovery classes, mental and physical healthcare in our clinic, legal services, housing search and stabilization, and benefits applications.

I’ve found my footing at Women’s Lunch Place by befriending some of our most challenging and impaired guests. I enjoy having the tough conversations and it’s so rewarding when I can break through using patience, compassion, and empathy. I am confident in these moments when I’m creating new relationships. I know that by showing up consistently, with integrity and a non-judgmental approach, our team can provide life-changing support for the women we serve.

When I’m not working, I’m exercising, doing yoga, and dog sitting. I worked with dogs before coming to Women’s Lunch Place, as a handler providing training and socialization. I’m an experienced mid-distance runner, but I’ve never run a marathon. I’m feeling confident and excited to have begun the training process. I’m running in 2024 in honor of the guests of Women’s Lunch Place, and to prove to myself that I can complete this intense challenge. Thank you for supporting our mission!

In 1967, Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor. While the Boston and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) rulebooks made no mention of gender, previous runners had been barred from running for being women—like Bobbi Gibb, who unofficially ran in 1966 and finished ahead of two-thirds of the male competitors.

Switzer registered for and was accepted into the race through all official channels, signing documents as "K. V. Switzer" as she usually did. When a reporter pointed out that a woman was on the course, race official Jock Semple attacked Switzer, screaming "Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!"

As Semple attempted to rip off Switzer's bib numbers, her coach Arnie Briggs and boyfriend Tom Miller (in the orange kit) defended her—Miller slammed into Semple, knocking him off the course as Briggs shouted "Run like hell!" Switzer finished the race in about 4 hours and 20 minutes. I highly recommend reading Switzer's firsthand account of the race excerpted from her memoir, detailing her fear, determination and other complicated feelings on that day.

After the 1967 race, the AAU rulebook was amended to exclude women from competing. In 1972, women were finally allowed to officially run the Boston Marathon alongside men. Switzer and Semple, who later reversed his position and became a supporter of women's running, eventually became friends.

"I realized Jock Semple was just an over-worked race director protecting his event from people he thought were not serious about running. Sure, he was notorious for his bad temper. And, sure, he was a product of his time and thought women shouldn't be running marathons. But I wanted to prove him wrong on that point.

"Thus it was really Jock who gave me the inspiration to create more running opportunities for women. Almost every day of my life I thank him for attacking me, because he gave me this spark. Plus, he gave the world one of the most galvanizing photos in the women's rights movement. Sometimes the worst things in your life can become the best things." -Kathrine Switzer, 2017
