FFXIV Write 2023 Day 11: Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Tumblr media
“We’re almost to the test site Mikoto’s marked,” Dark Autumn said, checking the map.
Iyna peeked around the corner of the ruins, scanning for hostiles. “Good. It’s too damn quiet out here, it’s making my ears twitch.”
“They do that anyway,” C’oretta pointed out.
“You know what I mean.”
“Quiet,” Dark admonished, taking point, bow in hand. The trio crept across the wartorn fields of the Bozjan southern front. Dark wondered once again what it might have looked like before the disaster and more recent rebellions, her forestborn sensibilities mourning for the land and its creatures as much as for the people. This was one of those times she was glad to not be able to hear the elements of the world and how they must feel in places like this.
They reached the location the archon had indicated, C’oretta deploying the device and checking back with Lilja and Mikoto via linkpearl, the trio’s excited scientific babble far too much for Dark to follow. That was an unexpected trio of overly intelligent energy that left her and Iyna, not to mention the Bozjan leadership, utterly exhausted, but they certainly got their results.
It could be worse, she supposed. They could add Aeryn to the mix. But the Warrior of Light was off trying to rescue the Scions from whatever was happening, and Twelve only knew when she’d return.
“OK we’re good to go,” C’oretta said. “They’re getting the readings now and should have some data for us when we get back.”
“If you say so,” Dark said. “Let’s…where’s Iyna?”
C’oretta’s ears went flat and her tail stiffened as she looked around. The viera was nowhere in sight. “She can’t have gone far but I don’t know why she would have wandered off that isn’t like her.”
They exchanged a look, the betrayal still fresh in their minds. It was hard to believe that of Iyna, given her time in Lente’s Tears, but they honestly knew so little of her—and like Misija she had been raised by Garleans.
Dark caught Iyna’s track and they crept along, though they didn’t have to go far. Around another ruined building corner only a few yalms away, Iyna stood very still, staring at something they couldn’t see.
“Iyna?” Dark kept her voice very quiet.
“Go back,” Iyna replied in a nearly voiceless whisper. “I saw movement coming our way, went to check, realized too late what it was, and now I am just waiting for it to get bored. Or at least realize I’m not a threat as I think this ruin might unfortunately be its nest.”
C’oretta frowned, took out a mirror, and held it out to where she could see around the corner and past Iyna. The little miqo’te paled. “Oh we should do what she says very carefully quietly and quickly let’s go Dark,” she whispered.
Dark began backing up, keeping an eye out in case whatever it was came around the building the other way, or had friends. Or for anything else that was out there.
C’oretta’s mirror must have caught the light when she pulled it away, as there came from around the wall a too familiar slow, throaty warning wark.
“Fuck,” Iyna said. “Run!”
C’oretta used her Scholarly skills to speed them along to outrun the red chocobo’s meteor strikes.
Dark would take this mad dash from an angry avian over going through that particular heartbreak again.

OH! Update on the Sart duel! He finally dropped his notes from the Skirmish... So I don't have to do the duel, but after I get Lyon's notes from CLL, I'm going to go back and kick Sartauvoir's ass for putting me through that.
But yeah, I'm really happy. Only Lyon's notes left.

misija for the "describe your oc's feelings/relationship to that NPC" ask game 👀👀
is this because i said "she did nothing wrong -- that's a lie she did everything wrong, but god forbid women do anything" when we did delubrum sdhkgasdjkl
---------------------------
When Ellie looks back on the events of Bozja and of Misija in particular, I think more than anything she feels a deep sense of pity -- and she's sure that if Misija were still around, she would spurn, mock, and reject that from her.
Tumblr media
Like Ysayle, Ellie one hundred percent understands where Misija came from; though Ellie's childhood was happier, she isn't unfamiliar with the pain of hunger and scrimping for whatever resources you can muster either, and if the Empire had established policies to help uplift those unfortunate souls in that position on Pearl Lane, she might've made the same choice to throw her lot in with them as Misija had. What resonates less is the generations-past betrayal that saw Misija's ancestor assassinated by the Blades who uplifted her in the first place -- again, an understandable grudge to bear and Ellie couldn't say if she'd feel any different if it happened to her own.
But she sort of feels the same way she did with Emet-Selch: she understands, but she can't agree with the horrors in the present, particularly with the fates of Gunnhildr's Blades in the southern front. And for the rest of the Bozjan offensive, she felt a twisting nausea in the pit of her stomach whenever she thought of Misija's ambitions to take what she was owed...because on some level, didn't she deserve some kind of reparations...?
Part of Ellie wishes that at the end, after the climactic battle at the Dalriada in which the resurrected form of Queen Gunnhildr gave her strength to stop the Diablo Armament, that she had been the one holding the knife over Misija's broken body... because if she had, she probably would have thrown it to the side, in a wish for Misija to see that the equitable society she wished for was possible without the imperial ambitions of Garlemald. Not being Bozjan herself, however -- only one of the strongest weapons in their arsenal without which they wouldn't have succeeded in their mission... -- she knows it wasn't remotely her place to be that judge.
But she can't think of Bozja ever again without that twisting nausea in her stomach.
thanks for the ask @verysmallcyborg!!

I am an absolute whore for the Bozja/Save The Queen storyline in XIV. I love it so much, oh my god I just. I just.
BUT LISTEN, LISTEN, HEAR ME OUT --
Delubrum Reginae, right? (oh my god I miss DR so much asdlgkfjfgd THAT RAID IS SO FUCKING COOL, I say while oozing bias everywhere) The whole thing is so fucked up story-wise -- you have the Blades that Misija Tempered, twisted and reformed into these absolute abominations that are the bosses you fight throughout it, all mindless pawns now that know only one thing: protect their Queen at all costs. (Don't even get me started on fucking Trinity Seeker, I could write a ten page essay on how deliciously and absolutely messed up that boss is on so many fucked up levels of fucked up, story-wise --)
BUT THEN YOU GET TO THE END FINALLY. And you find Misija. And That happens and she goes into her Boss Form and
okay the chariot part of her design is weird, even though they do mention somewhere that the fucked up chariot she rides in is meant to herald the queen's coming but THAT'S NOT THE POINT.
THE POINT IS, THE SONG. THE BOSS THEME.
THE QUEEN AWAKENS. The Queen fucking Awakens.
Let me just -- THIS THEME IS SO GOOD, IT'S SO GOOD THEMATICALLY. It's so deliciously, delightfully discordant and haunting and everything about it is just so wrong. It uses Bozja's themes as the base melody, but it changes them from something you hear throughout the zones, be it in Gangos or in places like The Southern Front, something that evokes a sense of pride or determination or even something that embodies the energy and urgency of skirmishes in war --
It absolutely twists those songs that by that point in the storyline you have heard so much of, into something so incredibly wrong and fucked up. And it is perfect, in my opinion. Not just for Misija herself and her story and her views on Bozja and Gunnhildr's Blades, but for the Delubrum Reginae raid as a whole, and especially for the previous bosses and what they were turned into versus who they were before.
The song feels so, so, so wrong, and I firmly believe that it's meant to, because the entire raid and its story is just as much wrong and disturbing, and I love it. I adore it so much.
YEAH I KNOW, I KNOW, THIS IS A XVI BLOG, NOT A XIV BLOG. AGAIN, HEAR ME OUT --
Imagine. Imagine. If Anabella had a theme like this, where it was a fucked up bastardized version of like, the Rosarian anthem's melody or something pertaining to Rosaria. Kind of like how her Black Shields are meant as a blatant "fuck you" to Elwin and the duchy and the original Shields. I just think... I just think that would be so neat...

A fragment of the past:
Bozja, the southern front.
A Hrothgar is standing in front of a group of troopers, laying out their plan of attack.
"The IVth legion has dug in deep at this entrenchment. They are attempting to cut off our supply lines to the other camps through this bottleneck. A small elite group will have to make their way through the warmachina firing line and a magus corps to break the assault. Blade Vivana will lead the charge."
Staring intently at the map of the terrain was the warrior of light himself. At his side was Crownsblade, the recreated gunblade of Bozjan legend. A symbol of hope for her people that they would someday be liberated from their Garlean oppressors.
Picking up his weapon, he offers a prayer to the night mother Nhaama before making his statement.
Tumblr media
"I will take the van, but leave the task to me. I can endure their bullets. Divide the rest of the forces as needed. We need all the men we can spare. Noah Galbranth will do whatever he can to ensure I die to break morale. That will leave you all time to circle around and cut off reinforcements."

I got the Sartauvoir duel to 33% this time! Prog!!!! I'd kept dying to the damned backdraft. I think if I go get some more DPS honors and take Aetherweaver instead of Templar I might be able to kill it before the second Phenex.
