Detroit Tigers-Minnesota Twins Series Preview

The Tigers At A Glance- Everyone thought the Tigers made a big leap forward in 2021 with 77 wins and some first round picks reaching the Major League level. Detroit has went 8-14 since the Twins last saw them and are tied for last with the Royals in the American League Central. The Tigers split what turned out to be a two-game series in Cleveland this weekend. Saturday’s game got postponed due to rain. Since we last saw the Tigers, Tyler Alexander is out with an eblow injury, Michael Pineda broke his middle finger on his pitching hand, Eduardo Rodriguez has a left ribcage sprain, Will Vest was put on the injured list, Austin Meadows has vertigo, and Victor Reyes has a right quad strain. Detroit claimed lefty Sam Howard from the Pirates and Brendon Davis from the Angels. Akil Baddoo was struggling so bad that he got sent to Toledo. Harold Castro has been the most consistent hitter with a .288 average. The Tigers have just twenty-one home runs in forty games. The pitching staff has been decent with a 3.63 ERA as a whole. The Twins will miss Tarik Skubal, who’s been really good. Wily Peralta has allowed just two runs over 16 1/3 innings of work. Alex Lange, Andrew Chafin, and Will Vest have been good in the bullpen. Gregory Soto has locked down seven saves on the year.
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins keep on finding ways to win games and Sunday’s game proved to be another point. They have won six of their last seven games and lead the division by four games over the White Sox. Trevor Larnach returned to the lineup on Sunday and went 0-for-5. Luis Arraez went 5-for-8 in the last two games of the Royals series and has a .336 average on the year. Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton were out of the starting lineup on Sunday after the Twins had won the first two games of the series. Gary Sanchez has smacked three homers and driven in thirteen runs in May. Danny Coulombe is set to begin a rehab assignment in Wichita this week. Josh Winder will get some rest after being placed on the injured list with a sore shoulder. He was pitching through the pain and the Twins want to rest him arm for a bit. The Twins starting staff owns a 3.25 ERA, which is fifth-best in baseball. Joe Smith has not allowed a run over 13 2/3 innings of work. Jhoan Duran hasn’t allowed a run over his past 7 2/3 innings.
What To Watch For- The Twins swept the Tigers in the first series of the year in late-April. Chris Archer is (2-3) with a 3.66 ERA in eleven starts against the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera has homered off him twice. Sonny Gray is (2-1) with a 3.23 ERA in six games versus the Tigers. Jonathan Schoop is 6-for-18 against Gray. Dylan Bundy is (0-2) with a 4.70 ERA in five games against the Tigers. The Tigers have not announced a starter for Wednesday, but that game could be postponed due to rain in the forecast. The Tigers are here in early-August when a makeup game could be played. The Twins were forced to finish the night game with the Dodgers and played a suspended game with the Astros earlier this month. The Twins need to continue to beat up on bad teams within the division this week.

Wedding bells rang on Friday night for Teen Mom couple Jade Cline and Sean Austin!
The Teen Mom: The Next Chapter stars got hitched at the Black Iris Estate in Carmel, Indiana, surrounded by their ‘Teen Mom’ co-stars— and MTV cameras!
Jade and Sean— who reunited after Sean got sober several years ago— got engaged during the first season of ‘Next Chapter.’
On their big day, Jade was walked down the aisle by her parents, Christy and Corey (whom she had been somewhat estranged from before they got sober). Sean got emotional upon seeing his bride walking toward him.
After saying “I do,” the newlyweds partied all night with their co-stars.
Here are some more details from the wedding!
Venue: Jade and Sean chose the Black Iris Estate for the nuptials, which offers an outdoor ceremony space with an black iron gazebo where the couple said their wedding vows. The guests sat in a space surrounded by trees.
Wedding Guests: Nearly the entire ‘Teen Mom’ crew came to Indiana to celebrate the nuptials. Guests included Briana DeJesus and Devoin Austin (who were both in the wedding party); Gary and Kristina Shirley; Amber Portwood; Maci Bookout and Taylor McKinney; Cory Wharton; Kayla Sessler and her boyfriend Ryan Leigh; Brittany DeJesus and her fiancé Steven; Cheyenne Floyd and Zach Davis; and Cheyenne’s father Kyle Floyd, mother Margaret and stepdad. (It does not appear that Tyler Baltierra, Catelynn Lowell or Leah Messer attended the festivities.)
Sean’s twin brother Brendon served as the best man, while Jade’s best friend Chau was the maid of honor. Their daughter Khloie was reportedly their flowergirl.
Reception: Jade and Sean’s reception was truly unique. The Estate’s ballroom featured crystal chandeliers and long tables adorned with tabletop greenery and black and white candlesticks. Jade and Sean did a black, white and gold color scheme, complete with black “King and Queen” chairs at their head table.
Guests were treated to an “upside down” floating wedding cake, as well as a hookah area, photo booth and plenty of dancing.
Speeches: Jade’s mother, Christy, made a short speech welcoming Sean to their family. After mentioning that she originally told Sean no when he asked for her blessing to marry Jade, she acknowledged how much he has grown and applauded Jade for standing by him through the hard times.
“We’re not giving away a daughter to you, we’re gaining a son,” Christy told Sean.
Chau and Brendon also gave speeches at the reception.
Food: The couple served an elegant meal, complete with fall-themed items and nods to their home state of Indiana. In addition to braised beef and chicken entrees, the menu included Indiana corn pudding, pumpkin desserts and chocolate dipped strawberries.

Musique Noire Makes Their Mark with ‘in*ter*gen*er*a*tion*al’
Musique Noire is an all-female jazz world fusion group based out of Detroit, Michigan. Their sound is not only a unique vibe you won’t hear anywhere else, but the band is changing the way music is taught and introduced to young people. All four main members are working musicians and passionate music educators.
Musique Noire includes bandleader Michelle May on violin and flute, Leslie Deshazor on viola, Leah Lucas Celebi on viola and violin, and JoVia Armstrong, on percussion.
The name "Musique Noire" was decided upon because the group's musical interests were mainly around jazz and world music, but always the undercurrent was that the music was informed by the culture of Black people.
The group’s new release, in*ter*gen*er*a*tion*al, has a jazz and soul-based sound with an ounce of world music. It includes three songs written by three dynamic up-and-coming young (under 30) musicians: pianist Brendon Davis, singer/songwriter/violinist Alex Way, and harpist Ayha Simone. It’s Musique Noire's way of leaving their legacy and connecting with the younger generations. The 7 songs in total each reflect different experiences of the young artists and the group members as women or being influenced by women. Michelle commissioned these young artists to collaborate with Musique Noire and in turn provided them with mentoring, producer credit, and payment for their work.
Although the songs are mostly instrumentals, two vocal songs are “Like the Sun” and “Nirvana - Feast or Famine. "Like the Sun” is somber yet reflects a sense of growth and hope, about rising to the occasion. The vocalist sings “Like the waves that crash so loud / so will I / so will I.”
“Nirvana - Feast or Famine” reflects themes of Afro-futurism and features lyricist Mahogany Jones. The lyrics are rap and hip-hop inspired and the words themselves are relevant today. Mahogany announces that she’d “rather ask forgiveness than permission.”

As we commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, I renew attention to David Byrne's American Utopia. The central idea is that the world depends on our individual, inner transformation of mind and heart, which we cannot accomplish alone. Our true selves are linked to one another through relationships.

'It brought chills': Haligonians watch Canada take on Belgium in World Cup
While Canada's 1-0 World Cup loss to Belgium was not the result fans hoped for, many remain firmly in Canada’s corner.
“I think we put up a good showing. We stayed in it early, and if we had of gotten that penalty, it would have been a different game,” said James MacDonald after watching the match in Halifax.
Canadian Alphonso Davies’ penalty kick was blocked by the Belgian keeper in the 11th minute.
“If we had [gotten the goal] I think we would have at least drawn if not won,” said MacDonald.
Regardless of the outcome, many watching in Halifax said the match was a surreal sports moment.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for 36 years,” said Aaron Horton. “All Canadians are into hockey, not so many into soccer, for all of us to come together and watch this first match, it's fantastic.”
Long-time soccer coach Costa Elles says he still has haunting memories of 1986 -- Canada’s last appearance in the World Cup.
“The last time, we just visited. We were tourists,” said Elles.
“These guys are well organized. It is a good machine with some talent,” Elles said of the Canadian squad.
He says he is cautiously optimistic Canada will be competitive in Qatar.
“It shows that if you are [a] good team, you can beat the individual powers,” said Costa.
Derek Martin, the president of the Halifax Wanderers, organized a watch party at a Halifax bar and says the passion of the soccer fans in attendance surpasses anything he has ever seen.
“I don’t know what it is about the sport. I don’t know if it's a nationalism that comes with the World Cup, and the Euros, but there is something that is visceral about how fans respond,” said Martin.
It was the first time in Brendon Lelievre’s life that he got to watch Canada compete for soccer’s biggest title.
“It brought chills to my skin hearing the national anthem at the world cup stage for the first time,” said Lelievre.
He says seeing the quality of Canada’s play on the pitch is a “dream come true” for a soccer fan.
Canada’s next game is set for Sunday against Croatia.

First Take: The Banshees of Inisherin- awards season begins in true Irish style
SYNOPSIS: Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.
With a Martin McDonagh film, you know exactly what you’re gonna get well before the BBFC black card comes on screen. With In Bruges, it was the tale of a hitman going wrong, with Seven Psychopaths it was a self referential film about a screenwriter becoming embroiled in a criminal underworld, and with Three Billboards, it was the story of a mother seeking justice. Now, reunited with his two main stars for the first time since that seminal 2008 release, McDonagh has a new film out in time for those elusive awards deadlines. And boy is this one dark.

As ever, McDonagh is writer/director, so he has a big amount of input on where this 1 hour 49 minute tale goes- it is paced fairly well, with a hefty amount of character development crammed into a short runtime, and on top of that, this film goes to some seriously dark places at times, earning the 15 certificate with its mix of deep moments and the occasional bit of humour (which has become typical within his previous films); it ain’t an easy watch at points, but if you’ve seen any of his older movies, this is exactly what he is known for. Behind the camera is Ben Davis, who shoots this film magnificently using natural light a fair bit, and as is tradition, McDonagh opted to bring in Carter Burwell to score it
On to the cast, and there’s really only one place to start. Returning to work for McDonagh is Colin Farrell and Brendon Gleeson, two talents this director knows how to get the very best out of regardless of what kind of film they make - and they continue to work incredibly well as leads. A plot like this relies on having two exceptional actors to tell the story of a friendship falling apart in the way that it does in this movie, and these two more than do it justice. Rounding out the cast is Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan (who continues his meteoric rise into Hollywood off the back of Dunkirk and a few other indie releases), Gary Lydon and Pat Shortt, but ultimately this one is a story written solely for the leads. It’s a movie which no production company would ever take a chance on aside from Film4, with its remit to be the alternative- and thinking about it, releasing a film like this in the same week its parent company (Channel 4) turns 40 feels right.
THE VERDICT
Banshees of Inisherin is an acquired taste- for fans of McDonagh’s older work, this will be an absolute breeze, but for the casual viewer, it is a slow burner of a film that will take you on quite the journey. It isn’t for everyone, but as we start the journey towards BAFTA and Oscar time, it’s a film we will be talking about when the nominations get revealed.
