23 August 1970 - Queen played in the Lecture Theatre at Imperial College, London, UK, attended by ex-1984 member, John Garnham. This is Barry Mitchell's first of 12 gigs as Queen's bassist.The gig was promoted by a hand-written ad on the college noticeboard by Roger Taylor. All these years later, Barry has happily given interviews about his short stint with the band. One one occasion he recalled his audition about three before this show, and how they ran through a couple Smile numbers that would end up on Queen's debut album. “I felt like such an outsider when I first joined Queen”, said Barry. “They had everything worked out. Just before my first gig, Freddie suggested we all camp it up and wear women’s clothes. He really wanted to play on it,
but it just didn’t happen, thank God!”Freddie was flamboyant at rehearsals, but Barry Mitchell didn’t feel the posture was matched by the voice: ‘He didn’t sing very well, that was self evident. It just wasn’t there, it would break up and he couldn’t hold the note. It was later on, in the Eighthies, when it really became spot-on. Brian was outstanding, technically brilliant. Roger was never a great drummer but I loved his backing vocal harmonies, his high-pitched stuff.’In rehearsal Freddie did not play either guitar or piano and, indeed, Mitchell was unaware he could play an instrument. Despite this, Freddie appeared to form the group’s musical core. ‘It was Freddie who had the ideas, most of them came from him’, he said. ‘If someone else came up with something Freddie would hone it until it was right. Freddie had this really clear vision of how the songs should go.’”The new line-up rehearsed zealously - still at Imperial - and even played a couple of impromptu gigs for friends to gauge the reaction. All they needed now were some small gigs to get themselves up and running again, starting with the Imperial gig 23 August. They used simple lighting but they all wore fancy stage costumes. Freddie even went so far as to procure the talents of dressmaker, Wendy Edmonds from The London College of Fashion: I made clothes for Roger and Freddie when they had the stall together. I would cut up curtains to make panelled velvet jackets and bags and things like that.Denise Craddock (friend) was there, and made notes in her diary: 'Fred looked excellent in shiny trousers, velvet top, snake bracelet, boots and silver hair. Brian's guitar work excellent and Barry's bass beautiful. Big crowd of supporters’. During the show the audience were treated to free apple juice and buckets of popcorn, which had been carried from Freddie’s flat earlier in the day. Barry recalls the band playing these songs at shows around this time period: ‘Stone Cold Crazy,’ ‘Liar,’ ‘Keep Yourself Alive,’ ‘Doin' Alright,’ ‘Great King Rat,’ ‘Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll,’ ‘Hangman,’ and a Rock 'n' Roll medley of cover songs. The band set out to prove that they were different in all aspects, and that night, they went down very well - but the audience were friends of the band, and they may have been somewhat biased in their favour ! When asked about other songs that were rehearsed but didn't make it to the shows or albums, Barry replied, "I don’t remember any songs that we worked on not making it. I do remember a song that was not ready for performance by the time I left, ‘My Fairy King.’” He said ‘Jesus ‘ was also rehearsed but never performed with him. ‘Doin' Alright’ was performed like the guitar-oriented Smile version. Mitchell recalls, "It was probably the first song that I worked on with the guys, and we did it much the same way that Smile did it. Any development of it came after my departure." And when asked about his contributions to Liar's bass lines, he said, "Liar sounds much the same as when I played it." He also stated that ‘Stone Cold Crazy,’ despite some stories that early live versions of the song were much slower in tempo, was played no slower in 1970 and '71 than what was eventually heard on Sheer Heart Attack in 1974. Over the years, the Rock 'n' Roll medley always included ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ and would often include (or at least have references to) many other covers, including ‘Tutti Frutti,’ ‘Bama Lama Bama Loo,’ ‘Shake Rattle and Roll,’ ‘Stupid Cupid,’ ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula,’ and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On.’ These bits would usually be sung by Freddie over a continuing 12-bar blues, giving him the freedom to jump into whatever he'd like. The medley would feature in the show through 1977, and later versions of ‘Jailhouse Rock’ in the 80s would often result in similar band jams. ‘Big Spender’ would usually precede the medley in the earlier years, and ‘Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting’ would feature in it a few times in 1977. Coda to Episode 2.03: Deep Breath
A/N: After listening to Episode 2.03, I couldn’t help but want to write something from Other Violet’s perspective after the call with Sana and Arkady, to explore some of her thoughts and humanise her a bit. It can’t be easy being the premier spymaster of a galaxy-wide revolution. Plus, I wanted the excuse to write some soft Other Violet & Thasia fluff ^^ (I envision their relationship here as more queerplatonic than romantic, but feel free to make it whatever you want in your own head).
Warning for references to Brian’s illness from Episode 3, as well as references to the death of Emily Craddock. I tried to go lightly on this and not make it a main theme of the fic, but the references and associations are still there and could potentially be distressing to people with the way the world is right now, so please take care <3

Violet closed her eyes after the call ended, counting out the seconds. Once she got to ten, she opened them again.
It hadn't helped much; the beginnings of a headache still throbbed at her temple, insistent. She took another couple of deep, steadying breaths.
She was in the middle of orchestrating a galaxy-wide revolution, with an infinite number of moving parts, variables and potential pressure points to navigate every single day. One group of loose-cannon smugglers and former Regime agents shouldn't be able to stress her out like this. And yet.
They hadn't checked in. They'd gone bolting off to Telemachus without a single word, practically crash-landed on the planet by the sounds of things, and hadn't even thought to so much as let her know. And the situation with their translator--
"How was the call?" Thasia quietly re-entered the room, two steaming mugs held in one of their pairs of hands. Violet recognised the scent of chrysanthemum, and took another moment to be grateful to Thasia for always, somehow, knowing what she needed before she did. She held out a hand and accepted the mug.
"They figured out that the illegal weapons shipment was headed for Telemachus and took off there like a shot to warn their contacts," Violet summarised, taking a sip of the tea, which was sweetened just the way she liked it. "And they managed to tear up the ship on entry."
Thasia, who had sat down on the floor of Violet's little office - or as they liked to call it, the 'command centre' - did a physical double-take. "Tore up the ship? Krejjh? That doesn't sound like them. When I said that their flying was legendary, I mean I have never seen anything like it."
Violet pressed her lips together; she'd been holding back this last piece of news. "Brian Jeeter is sick," she said, succinctly. "It sounds like he was taken ill shortly before they left Hypatia, or maybe just after. In Captain Tripathi's words, he 'coughed himself unconscious'."
She watched the impact of these words hit Thasia, who cursed softly under their breath. "Translator Jeeter lived out in Neuzo," they said.
"Yes."
"Did you tell them about--?"
"They weren't in the mood to hear it, and I wasn't in the mood to go into it," Violet said shortly. "Besides, what good would it do? We weren't - able to save her."
Thasia shifted fractionally closer to her chair, almost but not quite touching. Near enough to offer comfort. "Translator Jeeter spent some years on Neuzo, but he didn't grow up there," they pointed out. "So his condition is probably... recoverable. With time."
"I know that," said Violet, a little too quickly. "They got him medical attention quickly enough. I'm not concerned."
Thasia looked at her. Dwarnians didn't have eyebrows, but the expression of scepticism was easy enough to read without them.
"I just wish they would-" Violet searched for the words to put to her frustration. "Stop to think for a second and realise that they're a part of something bigger now. That they have responsibilities to people other than themselves." Thasia tilted their head, the Dwarnian equivalent of a nod of understanding. "And that they also have people they can rely on now, too."
"It can take time, that sort of adjustment," Thasia pointed out. "It wasn't that long ago that they were just a tiny group of smugglers. But they'll come around. They're just... scared. And desperate. You and I both know how that feels."
Violet let out a breath, because they did. She could - and did - still fault the Rumor crew for being brash, impulsive, reckless and uncommunicative, but most of those were things she'd known they were when she'd given them the Hypatia job. This was just another reminder.
And she couldn't fault the crew for panicking and doing whatever they could to help a crewmate who had suddenly fallen seriously ill, with a cause they didn't properly understand or know how to deal with. Violet remembered how that felt. The helplessness.
It didn't change anything about their situation, the razor's edge they were currently walking between success and failure, and she didn't regret taking the Captain and Arkady to task in the way that she had. They needed to understand what was at stake. But it did sap the last of her irritation, leaving her just feeling drained. The headache stabbed at her temples more insistently, given the opening.
It wasn't three o'clock in the morning where she and Thasia were; she wasn't sure what time it was. She worked until she couldn't any more and then slept. Woke up again, and repeated the cycle.
"Violet," said Thasia, and Violet opened her eyes again, not sure when she'd closed them. Thasia only rarely dropped the title from her name, and never when others were around; it always managed to surprise her, like a little shock of intimacy. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
In response, Violet got down from her chair and sat next to Thasia on the floor until they were body to body, sharing warmth. She leaned her forehead against Thasia's. "Just this," she said, honestly.
She felt, more than saw, Thasia smile, as they gently brushed a strand of her hair behind one ear. "I can do that," they said.

So… we had the pleasure to go to London this weekend and hang with the wonderful and talented folks in the Daughtry Camp.
Lzzy, Chris, and the band are currently and deservedly top 5 on the ole radio with their killer Journey cover.
So at Daughtry’s sold out show at the F’n Royal Albert Hall…. They performed it live together for the first time.
Daughtry was nice enough to let me take some pictures. First time shooting a rock show and not playing guitar… all I can say is that I had a blast and my god! I respect show photogs so much. What a beautiful hustle!!! 💚💚

Details: Early Queen/Smile A rare early draft of the lyrics for Doin' Alright, 1969, the 11 lines written in black ballpoint pen in two separate hands, the first two verses and chorus [7 lines] in Roger Taylor's writing, the third verse [4 lines] in Brian May's hand, this early draft briefer than the final recorded version on Queen's debut album [Queen released in 1973] and showing several variations to the final wording: - 3rd line: Ive got a feeling, I should be proving whats right instead of released version: 'Gotta feelin' I should be doin' alright' - 5th line, 1st 3 words: Smothered in joy... instead of: 'Jumping with joy...' - 6th line: Any day, I should be feeling all right instead of the later version 'Anyway I should be doin' alright' - 9th-11th lines: ....I got to run I'll never see the sky again I'll never be the guy I was precede the final: '...I've got to hide Going back to where the skies are blue Going home to be the guy I was... -- the page annotated on the verso by various flatmates at 40 Ferry Road, London, SW13 in felt pen, watercolour and wash with illustrations and doodles -- 10x8in. (25.4x20.3cm.)
Lot Essay: The vendor, Denise Craddock, shared a flat with various members of Queen/Smile/Ibex between October 1969 and June 1970. In an accompanying note regarding the background to this page of lyrics, Denise states that on the ...11.11.69 Noted in my diary Brian and Roger practising a new song in the sitting room of the garden flat we were sharing at 40, Ferry Road, SW13... and these lyrics appear to have derived from this rehearsal session. It would seem that Brian May [or Tim Staffell on an earlier occasion at the flat] must have dictated the first two verses to Roger Taylor as the latter is not acknowledged as a contributor to the genesis of this song.
The group Smile was formed in October 1968 and comprised Brian May - lead guitar and backing vocals, Tim Staffell - vocals and bass guitar, Roger Taylor - drums and backing vocals. They recorded Doin' All Rightat Trident Studios, London in June 1969. The lyrics for the song are credited to Brian May and Tim Staffell. Queen's version of the song with Freddie on vocals, was released on their debut album in 1973, with the same writers' credit. Tim Staffell also recorded his version of the song recently on the first album with his new group aMIGO.
In March, 1970 Staffell left Smile and the group broke up. Freddie then joined Brian May and Roger Taylor, and the three of them formed Queen. They started looking for a bass player and had three or four before they found John Deacon, who joined Queen in February 1971.
The doodles on the reverse of the paper on which the lyrics are written reflect the various flatmates at Ferry Road at that point in 1969. Names and fragments of names include: Fred [Bulsara], Roger [Taylor], John [Deacon] and Denise [Craddock].
Unfortunately, the other side of the paper isn’t provided on the website.
An interesting bit of band history that relates to Tim Staffell, Smile, Queen before Queen, and Queen. Very brief mention of Ibex. (x)

Starship Iris Yuletide character nominations and requests
I'm taking the plunge and doing Yuletide for the first time, and as best I can tell in addition to actually nominating it helps to use the official-unofficial Nomination Coordination Station post and sheet to try to cover different characters without doubling up, and in addition to that, to discuss nominations in fandom areas. According to the sheet, these are the current nominations and requests (5p UTC September 29). Nominations are open until 9a UTC September 30.
