and how there were literally no consequences for that? at all? like british gas just said oopsies, we wont do it again, and that was it?

There is current campaigning of a mass non-payment strike in the UK, in response to energy suppliers further hiking up prices by 65% on Oct 1st. The aim is to get one million people to cancel their direct debits if the government doesn't listen and decides to go ahead with the hike in prices. Along with the rise in cost of food, petrol and mortgage, the cost of living will put further millions of people (1 in 3 of us) in the UK in fuel poverty this coming winter.

British Gas were "totes" accessible; it's story time! And how being assertive is different to being a Karen.
At the moment it's pretty cold in the UK, cold enough to cause problems. Yes, Americans you get colder, but people have already died, now is not the time to open your mouth. My Granddad is 86, is vulnerable, and he is also very deaf. His heating packed up today, and he can't call himself because he can't hear someone over the phone at all.
Now, me and my Dad couldn't do anything at our end without his long customer number, because we could not speak to a human. We know literally all his other details. But the automated service just doesn't let you get any where. So we had to drive over to his house. Which is a reasonable drive actually.
And here the story continues...
We called, and explained his situation. How he is 86, vulnerable, and very deaf. And they were like yes, 5 days from now with no heating is good... I explained again he had health conditions that left him vulnerable, so then we were left on hold for ages...
Then the lady got back, right your appointment is between 8am and 6pm tomorrow. I explained that my Granddad has an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow morning, and he could not cancel it. The lady was like well that's your appointment, and if I didn't like it. Then my Granddad would have to ring himself first thing in the morning to get it changed. Otherwise wait 5 days. That it wasn't possible to get either a morning or afternoon slot. Just nope, or even have another day like Wednesday.
Like, I explained again he cannot speak over the phone because he is extremely deaf. She insisted there's nothing that could be done, and threatened the 5 days again. Got rude and was all like well if you miss tomorrows appointment that's not my problem. This went in circles, she didn't listen.
You should get someone to sit in instead. Which basically there's only me and my Dad and my Dad has an doctors appointment first thing in the morning also. Which at the moment are like gold dust, so we don't want to cancel that either. BUT my Granddad isn't going to be the only person with this issue, and not everyone has someone. Vulnerable people have health things going on. It happens.
He certainly isn't going to be the only old deaf person either.
I had to get assertive, and explain that I wasn't happy with the situation, because the whole process had been extremely difficult from an accessibility point of view. Hold on, I'll get the manager she says. More time on hold naturally.
The manager is in a meeting...
Eventually we got it, so I can get called tomorrow to sort out a rough time the engineer will be there. Like I would have been happy to have just an afternoon slot, or a different day that wasn't 5 days for an elderly person to be left in the cold.
Like I have no idea if we can sort it out if the engineer is like, yes it's the short time no one can be there. But it took literally hours to get to this point.
And at least someone who can actually hear someone over the phone can do the talking. That took an age.

So instead of talking to me at any point Re British gas and there attempts to pressure people into setting up direct debits that they charge on a whim without warning people, or increase the amount to increasingly stupidly amounts, my dad would rather just Scream at them on the phone to call of debt collector companies that are apparently emailing and calling, because "it's making me want to hang myself".
Like FFS I Could of organised to send money to him to clear off this debit so we can move to another company that isn't fucked and can Actually take proper meter readings and not off one of these BS smart meters that are fucked.

It's annoying because I FUCKING exist. I live here too. Any kind of balif situation would effect me too also technically.

The boss of British Gas owner Centrica saw his pay almost double last year after high energy bills boosted the firm’s share price.
Centrica chief executive Chris O’Shea took home £8.2million in 2023.
