SUNDAY FUNDAY
Celebrating Black History Month!
Bronzeville Boys and Girls by American poet Gwendolyn Brooks and illustrated by the prolific American illustrator Ronni Solbert is the Historical Curriculum Collection book we are sharing with you this fine Sunday Funday.
Gwendolyn Brooks published her first book in 1945, A Street in Bronzeville, which earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her second book, Annie Allen, won Brooks a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1950, making her the first African American to win the award. Bronzeville Boys and Girls, published by Harper in 1956, was her first book for children, set in the same urban landscape of the Chicago neighborhood she grew up in, the South Side of Chicago, where Bronzeville is located. The description on the back of our first edition notes that the book offers “timeless poems, which remind us that whether we live in the Bronzeville section of Chicago or any other neighborhood, childhood is universal in its richness of emotions and new experiences.” Literary and cultural writer Maria Popova notes the socio-political impact of a book about black children being published in 1956:
Considering that even today only 3% of children’s books feature characters of color, the collection was a revolutionary act of creative courage in its era, a decade before the peak of the civil rights movement. It granted a generation of children the tremendous gift of being seen, of having the validity of their experience mirrored back by the page, of being assured that they belong in literature and art.
The book was illustrated by Ronni Solbert, an illustrator, painter, sculptor, and photographer who studied folk and tribal art in India on a Fulbright Scholarship. Solbert and Brooks were brought together by Ursula Nordstrom, editor in chief of the Department of Books for Boys and Girls at Harper Publishing.
The 2007 HarperCollins reissue of Bronzeville Boys and Girls, with vibrantly colorful illustrations by Faith Ringgold, stands in stark contrast to the black and white line imagery of Solbert, but Solbert’s illustrations remain iconic, as Ringgold’s will surely become.
Watch this video produced by River Forest Public Library about Gwendolyn Brooks! In it you can see the reissue briefly!

The untold story of the real 'Aunt Jemima' and the fight to preserve her legacy
You probably have never heard her name, but Nancy Green has likely been in your kitchen before. Green created the Aunt Jemima recipe, and with it, the birth of the American pancake.
"Her face on the box, that image on the box, was probably the one way that households were integrated," Sherry Williams, president of the Bronzeville Historical Society in Chicago, told ABC News.
Long before she pioneered that famous mix, Green was born into slavery in Montgomery County, Kentucky. After the Civil War, she moved to a deeply divided Chicago, becoming a strong voice at Olivet Baptist Church, the city’s oldest black congregation.
"It was so good that the boys would now tell everyone ... the milling company heard about it ... they came and sought her out," Hayes said. And just like that Aunt Jemima was born. It made its debut at the World’s fair in Chicago in 1893.
As legend tells it, Green sold 50,000 boxes of the now famous pancake mix. "She was the trusted face. Back then, you know, anybody who would look at an African American woman cooking, they knew that they can trust her cooking, that she could cook,” Hayes said.
But for all those years, ads by Quaker Oats for Aunt Jemima never mentioned Green. Green lived until the age of 89 but died after being hit by a car in Chicago in 1923 as one of America’s first black millionaires EXCERPT FROM  The untold story of the real 'Aunt Jemima' and the fight to preserve her legacy

At Least 19 Children at a Chicago Shelter for Immigrant Detainees Have Tested Positive for COVID-19
A coronavirus outbreak at a Heartland Alliance facility on Chicago’s South Side may be the largest outbreak of the virus in any shelter for immigrant youth in the country. At least 19 children and two staff have tested positive.
Update, April 14, 2020: On Tuesday, Heartland officials said that the number of immigrant children in their care who had tested positive for COVID-19 had nearly doubled, from 19 to 37. Of those, 28 were asymptomatic at the time of the testing, the agency said. “To our knowledge, there’s not an increase in staff cases,” a spokeswoman for the organization said. “We are working hard to obtain testing for staff, too.”
Update, April 21, 2020: Heartland officials said five more immigrant children in their care tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total to 42. A Heartland spokeswoman said Monday that 33 children were asymptomatic at the time of testing. “All children are doing well and their prognosis is very good,” the spokeswoman said.
At least 19 children and two employees at a Chicago shelter for immigrant youth have tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days, in what appears to be the largest outbreak of the virus in the country in shelters for unaccompanied minors.
According to an email sent to staff Sunday, Heartland Human Care Services officials said the first positive test results were reported at its Bronzeville shelter on Friday and that additional cases there were confirmed over the weekend.
On Monday, officials from Heartland Alliance, the umbrella nonprofit organization that oversees the shelter program, confirmed the positive tests and said they expect there will be more cases.
“We are operating under the assumption that we will see additional positive diagnoses as we receive results from the other tests that have been administered, and the steps we are taking to ensure the health and safety of our participants and staff are based on that assumption,” Mailee Garcia, a spokeswoman for the organization, wrote in a statement. “The prognosis for all of the children in our care is very good, and we are continuing to focus on our participants’ health and well-being.”
As of last Wednesday, only six COVID-19 cases had been confirmed among children and adolescents housed in shelters around the country, according to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which oversees the nation’s shelter program. All six were at shelters in New York.
ORR officials said there were also 39 “self-reports” of positive COVID-19 tests among personnel affiliated with shelter programs in six states as of Wednesday. ORR has not provided updated figures, despite repeated requests since Friday.
COVID-19 is a less serious health threat to children than it is to adults.
Heartland, according to the copies of the email obtained by ProPublica Illinois, began “trying to secure tests” for children at the Bronzeville shelter after some of them displayed “COVID-19-like symptoms,” wrote David Sinski, executive director of Heartland Human Care Services.
The email doesn’t detail symptoms, when they became evident or when children were tested. But by Friday, Heartland officials learned that one of its “participants” — as the immigrant children and youth are called — had tested positive.
On Saturday, officials were told that three additional children had tested positive. By Sunday morning, they received positive COVID-19 diagnoses for an additional 15 children, bringing the total to 19. According to the email, 10 of the 19 children are asymptomatic. Two staff members have also tested positive.
“We understand that receiving this news may leave you feeling uncertain and scared,” Sinski wrote to staff. “I want you to know that we are committed to providing you with the information that you need to know in order to keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe.”
It’s unclear how old the infected children are or where they are from. But the Bronzeville shelter, a four-story converted nursing home that can hold up to 250 boys and girls, is licensed to house children from infancy to 17 years old.
Officials said they “immediately” move children to an isolated environment when they show any signs of any illness, including COVID-19, to minimize any risk of community spread. Since Saturday, Heartland has “enhanced our social distancing measures” at the shelters to limit the contact among children and between children and staff, Garcia said.
In his email, Sinski wrote that all remaining children at the facility are being tested and that he expected those results by Tuesday. He also asked all employees who worked on the floors where children who tested positive were living to stay home with pay for two weeks. Staff members who undertake “specific activities” with children will be provided N95 masks, gowns and gloves, and are being screened for COVID-19 symptoms before each shift.
Heartland officials said they are now contracting with additional nurse practitioners to be at the shelter for every shift. They are also exploring a house parent model, which would have a subset of staff be onsite full time for the coming couple of weeks, officials said.
The next several months could bring hurricanes, floods and fire, on top of the pandemic currently raging through the country. How do you shelter in place during an evacuation?
Heartland officials said the organization is in close contact with ORR and city public health officials.
Shelters for immigrant children, nursing homes and other congregate facilities must report to the city of Chicago when there are two or more positive COVID-19 cases, according to a March order. The city’s Health Department then provides “tailored guidance to facility staff on infection control, including cleaning protocols and how to properly manage both COVID-19 positive and exposed individuals,” a spokesperson said in a statement, adding that clusters of cases have been identified in “several facilities.”
Garcia said the organization is “doing all that we can to advocate for additional testing kits for participants and staff across our programs.” She added that “our team have been stellar and courageous champions during this pandemic, committed to both a high level of quality care and being creative and supportive to each other during this challenging time. They are true heroes.”
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which licenses the shelters, has been notified that children at the facility tested positive. “We’ve been in contact, and we’re offering assistance,” said agency spokesman Jassen Strokosch.
Heartland officials said a professional cleaning company has performed multiple cleanings of the facility in the past week and will continue to perform weekly deep cleanings.
According to ORR guidance meant to limit the spread of COVID-19, children who have symptoms and are recommended for testing are isolated from other children pending test results. Shelter programs are required to do twice-daily temperature checks of immigrant children and alert ORR if a child has a temperature above 100 degrees. ORR has also implemented a mandatory temperature check for anyone entering a shelter, according to officials.
ORR has also stopped placing children at shelters in California, New York and Washington, with limited exceptions, and said it is trying to find local shelters for newly arrived immigrant children to limit air travel. Previously, children were moved to shelters around the country where beds were available.
About 2,800 children are being held in the nation’s shelter system. There are 69 children at three shelters run by Heartland. The organization previously operated five shelters, all in Chicago, but has consolidated the program in response to COVID-19. “Our census was lower and consolidating sites has allowed us to implement the measures ... to safeguard the health of our staff and participants,” a spokeswoman said.
No children have tested positive for COVID-19 at another group of shelters in Illinois run by Maryville Academy, a Catholic child welfare agency, said Sister Catherine Ryan, Maryville’s executive director. About 30 teens are currently housed at two Maryville shelters.
“I’m very grateful that all of our children are fine,” Ryan said. “Obviously, we are taking a lot of precautions to keep it that way.”
Lawyers and advocates for detained immigrant children say they’ve been worried an outbreak would occur in a shelter. Lawyers went to court in late March to ask the federal government to speed up the release of children in its custody.
“It’s been our concern all along as advocates that jails, prisons, detention facilities, even licensed shelter detention, it’s where we’re going to see the massive outbreaks and it’s going to be exponentially higher than in the broader community,” said Holly Cooper, co-director of the Immigration Law Clinic at the University of California, Davis.
Cooper said she is particularly worried about children who have preexisting conditions that have not been identified by shelter officials or ORR and will make them more vulnerable to COVID-19.
“The goal,” she said, “is to get kids out of congregate care because there’s no way it can comply with [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guidance even if you’re using all the hand sanitizer in the world.”
Duaa Eldeib contributed reporting.
Update, April 13, 2020: This story was updated to include new comment from the Chicago Health Department.

Magnificent Women Monday
During Black History Month, we featured Bronzeville Boys and Girls written by legendary American poet Gwendolyn Brooks. One post was simply not enough to convey the range of Brooks’s work, so we’ve chosen to dedicate this #Magnificent Women Monday to her.
Born in Chicago in 1917, Brooks rose to fame through the portrayals of ordinary life in her community and had published 75 poems in literary magazines by the age of 16. Among her long list of honors is her position as the first African American recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for Annie Allen, and serving as Poet Laurate Consultant in Poetry for the Library of Congress from 1985 to 1986 and Poet Laurate of Illinois from 1968 until her death in 2000. Her poetry reflects an authentic, textured viewpoint of African American life. Toni Morrison crediting her with creating space for young Black writers and artists to exist in freely.
Her activism in promoting African American literature led her to leave her influential publisher Harper and Row in 1970 for Dudley Randall’s Broadside Press, and she would continue to work mainly with African American publishers for the rest of her life. Part of the widespread interest in her work lies in her ability to bridge the gap between the academic poetry stylings of the 1940s and Black militant writings of the 1960s as described by George E. Kent in A Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, allowing a political consciousness to inform her writing without allowing it to become the lone message of her work. We hold 11 titles by Gwendolyn Brooks. Shown here in order are:
1.) Portrait of Gwendolyn Brooks by Roy Lewis from Riot, Broadside Press. 1970. 2-4.) Title page and poems from the first edition of A Street in Bronzeville, Brooks's first published collection, Harper & Brothers, 1945. 5.) Dust jacket designed by Shirley Smith from the first edition of The Bean Eaters, a collection of poems that follows the slow rhythm of an elderly couple’s daily life, published by Harper & Brothers in 1960. 6 & 7.) Cover and frontispiece from a painting by Jeff Donaldson from the second printing of Riot, Broadside Press, Detroit, 1970. 8 & 9.) Title page and poem from the first printing of Family Pictures, Broadside Press, 1971. 10.) Cover from the first printing of Aloneness, a children's picture book illustrated by Leroy Foster, Broadside Press, 1971.

POLITICO Playbook: The case for tuning out the White House

POLITICO Playbook: The case for tuning out the White House
Tumblr media
A FEW DATA POINTS TO PONDER WHEN CONSIDERING HOW MUCH TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE WHITE HOUSE …
— THE WSJreported a few days ago that the president was looking to buy Greenland. The White House brushed it aside, saying it was just idle chatter, and then PresidentDONALD TRUMPsaid: “It’s not No. 1 on the burner, I can tell you that.” The president also said bluntly: “We’re going to Poland and then we may be going to Denmark — not for this reason at all.”
THEN TUESDAY NIGHT,the president pulled out of a trip to Denmark, because the prime minister said Greenland wasn’t for sale.
— THE WASHINGTON POSTreported Monday evening that the White House was considering pushing for a payroll tax cut to juice the economy. Shortly after that, the White House said to ignore the chatter, because there were many ideas floating around, and this was no more serious than any of the other proposals bouncing around the building. Then the president said this Tuesday: “Payroll taxes — I’ve been thinking about payroll taxes for a long time.”
— THE PRESIDENTsaid for a week or two that he was serious about bucking his party and pushing Congress to create a new background-check system for gun purchases. He said he was going to listen to both Republicans and Democrats and get something done in the wake of the tragedies in Dayton and El Paso. Then on Tuesday, he called the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre and told him he would not be pushing for new background checks, The Atlantic’s Elaina Plott reported.
IF THE PRESIDENT MAKES A PROCLAMATIONand then reverses, what is the use of the proclamation in the first place?
WE DID A ROUND OF PHONE CALLSTuesday to people in Hill leadership and at the White House to find out how seriously we should be taking the payroll tax idea. The answers ranged from “not seriously” to “no one has any information on it.”
— CONSIDER THIS: BARACK OBAMAsigned a payroll tax holiday into law in early 2012 after a frantic December trying to squeeze it through a divided Congress. What hasTRUMPpassed through this divided Congress — the one that’s on the brink of impeaching him — that gives you the inclination he could get this through?
Good Wednesday morning. SPOTTED:Paul Ryan on a delayed flight from DCA to Chicago.Pic
THE PRESIDENT’S FOREIGN POLICY …
— WAPO: “Trump postpones Denmark trip after prime minister declines to sell him Greenland,”by Felicia Sonmez, Anne Gearan and Damian Paletta: “People familiar with the president’s interest in Greenland said he had been talking about the potential purchase for weeks.
“Senior administration officials had discussed the possibility of offering Denmarka deal in which the United States would take over its annual $600 million subsidy to Greenland in perpetuity, said two people familiar with the talks who were not authorized to reveal the internal deliberations. They also discussed giving Denmark a large one-time payment as well to incentivize the transfer, the people said.” WaPo
— CNN’s @kylieatwood:“Trump & Macron spoke over the phone today & agreed they wanted to invite Russia to the G7 next year, a sr admin official said. Trump is expected to broach the topic w/ world leaders at the G7. Today Trump told reporters it would be ‘appropriate’ for Russia to re-enter G7.”
— THEY’RE BACK! … WAPO’S PAMELA CONSTABLEin Kabul andKAREN DEYOUNG:“The U.S. is nearing a deal with the Taliban. But another major threat looms in Afghanistan: The Islamic State”:“The official government line here is that the Islamic State has been defeated.
“The local branch of the extremist Sunni militia,Afghan officials say, has been corralled into a mountainous area near the Pakistani border by Afghan and U.S. forces and can no longer control populated areas. They say it has been reduced to staging suicide attacks against ‘soft’ targets, like the wedding party bombing here on Saturday that killed 63 people and wounded 190. …
“But local leaders in the border provinces of Nangahar and Konartell a different story. They say Islamic State forces continue to terrorize villagers in areas under their control, forcibly recruiting boys and banning girls from school. They and U.S. officials say that Taliban and Islamic State forces have continued to fight each other, but that they also fear that some Taliban fighters will join the more ruthless Islamic State forces if Taliban leaders make a deal with U.S. officials.” WaPo
READING FOR JARED AND GREENBLATT … NYT’S TOM FRIEDMAN: “How the Palestinian-Israeli Peace Process Became a Farce”:“Last week’s ugly mess involving the abortive visit to Israel of two Democratic congresswomen was useful for only one reason: It exposed how much the Palestinian-Israeli peace process has become a pathetic festival of magical thinking, performance art, reality denial, political fund-raising and outright political fraud. It’s become about everything except what it needs to succeed: courageous, fair-minded, creative diplomacy and leadership.
“At the official U.S. level, Jared Kushner has spent three yearsginning up a peace plan that he still won’t show anyone. So far, his only achievement is an Israeli-Palestinian economic conference in Bahrain that no Israeli or Palestinian officials attended.
“Kushner actually seems to believe that the problemcan be solved by the Israelis and Gulf Arabs funding a leveraged buyout of Palestinian aspirations for sovereignty and statehood. Kushner deserves some credit for fresh thinking about how to attract investment to the West Bank, but he lapsed into magical thinking when he allowed all the diplomatic features of his plan to be dictated by the political needs and desires of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel.” NYT
— AP’S JONATHAN LEMIREandDARLENE SUPERVILLE: “Trump: Any Jew voting Democratic is uninformed or disloyal”:“Showing a fresh willingness to play politics along religious lines, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that American Jewish people who vote for Democrats show ‘either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.’
“Trump’s claim triggered a quick uproar from criticswho said the president was trading in anti-Semitic stereotypes. It came amid his ongoing feud with Democratic congresswomen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, both Muslim.
“Trump has closely aligned himself with Israel, including its conservative prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while the Muslim lawmakers have been outspoken critics of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. Tlaib is a U.S.-born Palestinian American, while Omar was born in Somalia.
“‘Where has the Democratic Party gone? Where have they gonewhere they are defending these two people over the state of Israel?’ Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. ‘I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.’” AP
NEEDLESS TO SAY:Jews — like everyone else in America — are not subservient to an ideology, political party or person.
WHAT DINA POWELL’S UP TO … FT: “Goldman Sachs claws its way into contention for Saudi Aramco IPO,”by Anjli Raval and Andrew England in London, James Fontanella-Khan in New York and Simeon Kerr in Dubai: “Goldman Sachs has clawed its way into contention for a role in Saudi Aramco’s planned stock market listing, after a months-long charm offensive by top executives, including former Trump administration official Dina Powell, said several people briefed on the matter.
“Ms Powell, who left Goldman in 2017 to work at the White Houseand came back to the Wall Street bank a year later, has leveraged her knowledge of the region and relationships with the kingdom’s highest authorities to seek business for Goldman, said one person close to the Saudi state energy giant.” FT
HEADS UP … NYT’S MIRIAM JORDAN:“As early as Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security is expected to issue a sweeping new set of regulations for detaining migrant children, replacing more than two decades of protections that were put into place as a result of what happened to Alma and her fellow detainees in 1985. The new standards could allow the government to detain children and families for longer periods, revise the minimum standards of care and end the 22-year-old consent decree, known as the Flores agreement, that has protected the nation’s youngest and most vulnerable new arrivals.” NYT
SCOOP … NANCY COOK: “Trump team braces GOP donors for a potential ‘moderate and short’ recession”:“At a fundraising luncheon this week in Jackson, Wyo., headlined by both Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney acknowledged the risks to the GOP elite behind closed doors. If the U.S. were to face a recession, it would be ‘moderate and short,’ Mulvaney told roughly 50 donors, according to an attendee.” POLITICO
2020 WATCH …
— CHICAGO TRIBUNE: “Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg’s overwhelmingly white crowd at event on Chicago’s South Side reinforces his struggles to draw support from black voters,”by Bill Ruthhart: “South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg held a self-described grassroots campaign rally in Bronzeville on Tuesday night, but the overwhelmingly white audience he drew to the event in a historic black neighborhood reinforced the difficulty the Democratic presidential hopeful has had in connecting with African American voters.
“Buttigieg did not acknowledge the makeup of the audiencein his remarks or in answering questions from the 1,000 people at the sold-out event, but did touch on it briefly as he closed the hourlong rally with a plea for his supporters. ‘Find the people who don’t look like most of you in this room and let them know they have the chance, not just to support this campaign, but to shape it,’ Buttigieg said.” Chicago Tribune
BIG CASH ALERT(big July donations):RNC:Sheldon and Miriam Adelson gave $142,000 each. …NRCC:Sheldon and Miriam Adelson gave $142,000. …NRSC:August A. Busch gave $110,000.
TOP-EDS …
— REP. LIZ CHENEY (R-WYO.)in theWAPO: “How to lose a war, but not end it”:“President Trump knows a bad deal when he sees one. He extricated the United States from President Barack Obama’s disastrous nuclear accord with Iran. He pulled us out of an arms-control agreement with Russia that Vladimir Putin repeatedly violated. But if news reports are accurate, the State Department is about to capitulate to the Taliban, al-Qaeda’s longtime ally, as U.S. forces are withdrawn from Afghanistan. The president should reject this deal.”
— MITCH MCCONNELLin theWSJ: “We Stand With Hong Kong”
DANIEL LIPPMAN: “Inside Trump’s feud with Anthony Scaramucci”
— BTW … WHAT HAPPENED TO JOHNNY MAC? … PER DANIEL:Earlier this summer, Scaramucci let Trump’s former body man, John McEntee, use his office for six weeks. “He is creating a lifestyle app and he just needed to have a place to hang his hat for a little while,” Scaramucci explained.
— BACKSTORY:After McEntee left the White House in March 2018 over concerns about his gambling habits, he was named “senior adviser for operations” on the Trump campaign. But he quietly left late last year, according to a former White House official. (Although he’s friends with Scaramucci, McEntee is “by no means is a Mooch sympathizer” in Scaramucci’s current feud with Trump, this person said.)
THE JUICE …
— NEW GEORGETOWN INSTITUTE OF POLITICS AND PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOWS: Jonathan Burks,Paul Ryan’s former chief of staff … former Kansas Gov.Jeff Colyer…Olivia Alair Dalton,SVP of communications and marketing for the Human Rights Campaign …Karen Travers,ABC White House correspondent …Stephanie Valencia,co-founder of EquisLabs.
THE PRESIDENT’S WEDNESDAY: TRUMPwill leave the White House at 11:15 a.m. for Andrews, where he will fly to Louisville. He will arrive in Kentucky at 1:25 p.m. and go straight to the Galt House Hotel. At 2 p.m., the president will speak to the AMVETS 75th annual convention. At 3:05 p.m., he will leave the hotel for the Seelbach Hilton Louisville and will participate in a roundtable at 3:15 p.m., and speak at a fundraiser at 4:15 p.m. At 5:25 p.m., he will fly back to Washington. MORE 2020 … “Outside money flows into race for Susan Collins’ Senate seat,”by AP’s David Sharp and Brian Slodysko: “Money is pouring into Maine’s high-profile Senate race, threatening to upend the state’s reputation for genteel politics and giving way to a new era of partisanship. … Advertising data shows Democrats plan to spend at least $1.2 million on ads through December, including a spot that aired for the first time this month that accuses Collins of failing to protect Medicare. A newly formed GOP group, meanwhile, has $800,000 already in the bank, thanks to a small group of wealthy financiers.” AP
EPSTEIN LATEST — “Jeffrey Epstein lawsuits offer sordid details, including sex while on work release,”by the Miami Herald’s David Ovalle: “While serving a lenient jail sentence in Palm Beach County, wealthy financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was allowed to leave jail for ‘work release’ — at an office at his own organization, the Florida Science Foundation.
“But at the foundation, according to a newly filed lawsuit,Epstein and his web of associates repeatedly arranged for sex with at least two girls, including one he met when she was 17.”
— BOSTON GLOBE: “At MIT, more fallout from the university’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein”:“A well-known member of the MIT Media Lab plans to resign over revelations that the research center and its top leader took money from Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier who was accused of trafficking in underage girls.
“Ethan Zuckerman, director of the lab’s Center for Civic Media, last week told officials at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of his plans.” Boston Globe …Zuckerman’s Medium post
MEDIAWATCH — “Tucker Carlson’s Fox News Show Loses More Advertisers,”by NYT’s Tiffany Hsu: “The Monday episode of ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight,’ the host’s first since he left the airwaves for what Fox News said was a planned vacation two days after making the remarks on white supremacy, had fewer commercials than usual.
“There were spots for turmeric drink mixes, ear wash systems and cup-holder mountsfor smartphones, as well as ads for Dyson, Raymour & Flanigan and USAA, but none for products from SoFi, Calm or SteinMart. Those companies advertised on the program earlier this summer but said in statements in recent days that their commercials would not appear during Mr. Carlson’s nightly hour.
“A Monday night episode from one year ago,the broadcast of ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ on Aug. 20, 2018, had 16 minutes of ads, with 38 commercials that aired across the nation, according to iSpot.tv, the television ads measurement company. The Monday night episode this week, by contrast, had 13.5 minutes of commercials, with 23 nationally aired spots. Eight of the 23 were promotions for other Fox properties.” NYT

18. Between These Walls
It’s June 2nd and I haven’t had sex this entire year. It’s semi-intentional, mostly in the sense that I haven’t gone out of my way to secure any. No dating apps on my phone, my online dating presence is nil. But now it’s getting warm and I feel my inner thot slowly taking over, On my commute to work I daydream about the last time I had my nipples caressed by someone else. And I think, wow. I could rub one out right now but I have to go look at Excel spreadsheets for 8 hours instead.
The last time I was this abstinent was my senior year of college and six months thereafter. It was awful. I’d I lived in a house of six other girls. They were all in serious relationships. Which meant there was always some dude over, toilet seats left up, and that unmistakable dull-but-repetitive thud of a bed shaking in place. That shit is the worst, CERTAINLY when it’s not coming from you. It didn’t help that I was a dark-skinned black girl on a white, white, white campus. Worse, the one boy I did want to fuck, desperately, was hung up on his ex. Unfortunately he never communicated those things to me, and I spent much of that year in weird emotional/sexual angst as I felt myself develop feelings for this boy - double yikes. Those were peak ugly feels, like all my housemates were these delicate goddesses and I was a bum who ate candy in bed while watching old Disney Channel movies on YouTube (remember Brink!? Erik von Detten, sk8r boi of my dreams). Lots of drunk nights turned sad as I tearfully wondered why no one in this stupid town wanted to play tongue hockey with me.
But that was then. This is now. And I  most certainly do not have a self-esteem issue. I actually have no trouble admitting that I’m pretty cute. I have a nice butt and also legs I used to think of as toothpicks that I’ve since grown quite fond of. I’m smart. I could probably win some 90s WWF trivia. I’m funny. I can give you book recommendations. Sometimes the fact that I’m not accosted by admirers regularly actually befuddles me.
When you go so long without you start to think about the last person you were intimate with. Or at least I do. He was, objectively speaking, the best looking person I’ve ever been with. He had a semi-obscure biblical name that I found quite beautiful, almost as beautiful as his strong, veined hands and slow smile and over-six-foot frame. He wore Dashikis sometimes, was an unlicensed massage therapist and was attaining a Ph. D in black dude studies (I mean, basically). Oh, and did I mention he was a dad? To three children under the age of 10?
Our first date we talked about predominantly white institutions and he gave me some pool pointers. When I went home I patted myself on the back. Damn bitch look at you! He’s very educated! And funny! Sure, it’s odd he has children that were born the same time he claimed to be separated from their baby momma, but whatever! He’s still fine! And offered to smoke you out! And FINE, like Jesus Christ!
In the very beginning it was fun. I could humor his studies in “African thought” and tried to think very little about his children, since being a stepmom was nowhere in my near future. There were small things that bugged me about him, like his need to constantly teach me shit. His insistence on always being right. The way he could just being a cornball sometimes. But I overlooked it because a) I wasn’t marrying this man and b) never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would snatch someone that attractive. I know I said I’m cute but he’s like, beyond cute. Plus he knew what the HELL he was doing with his hands and all the other body parts that are involved with sex, so I decided I could deal if he would just shut up once in awhile.
The last time we saw each other was a an unfortunate dealbreaker. As usual, he picked me up from the train station. As I was getting into his car (total dadmobile - a cherry stationwagon with coloring pages and crayons scattered in the back seats) he said without smiling, “hurry up, you’ll let the cold in.”
Then he proceeded to argue with me about some made up statistic re: the amount of people who’ve been published vs. the amount of people with Bachelor’s degrees in the world. As I made my points, his token response was “Why are you fighting me on this?” I wanted to sock this beautiful man in his beautiful jaw. I told myself to chill out, that at least I’d get some good cuddles out of the evening.
Turned out he had mounds of work to do. Between classes and massaging people and other side gigs - not to mention being a co-parent - he had a lot on his plate that night. I was OK with this, since I’d brought my notebook and planned on getting some writing done. He went on about a script he had to edit and the time he got fired for refusing to take a drug test BUT THOSE PEOPLE MADE A MISTAKE firing him, obviously, blah blah blah. The whole night’s banter was intense, only alleviated briefly when he offered me his cold leftovers of Indian food. We got on the subject of the weather, where he once again tried to prove I didn’t know what I was talking about. There were no cold days left this winter, and he was pulling up the receipts to prove it.
I grew hot as he continued to pull up past forecasts from weather.com, even after I had somewhat conceded that while he could be right, another single-digit day wasn’t completely out of the question. There he went with that same token response. This it time it was “No no, you’re not listening to me.” What was wrong with this asshole, and why didn’t I notice sooner? Probably because I was too busy thinking about what was in his pants and the quickest way it would get in me. I went to his bathroom after and looked at myself in the mirror solemnly. You should’ve stayed your ass back home. Now I was stuck in Bronzeville at midnight with this insufferable person.
I came back to his room and told him I was going to bed. He took my hand and pulled me to him.
“What are you doing?”
“Giving you a hug.” We embraced tightly. The warmth of his body permeated through me as my own body began to heat up. I couldn’t deny that our sexual chemistry was intense. Our hugging became more involved and hands - his, mostly - began to wander. He took my shirt off. Then out of nowhere he pulled his whole penis out.
I looked down at it. Doing anything to his junk would require considerable effort on my part, since his endowments went beyond a handsome face and toned body. Also I’m like a car in the dead of winter: you gotta warm me up. So I announced that I was going to lay in his bed.
An open invitation. All I had on was black underwear. I feigned sleep and then fell asleep for real, only to wake up 30 minutes later to find the guy still working on script editing. Plus he hummed loudly to every song that played on his Pandora station - ughhh! Eventually he got into bed, fully clothed, and I got a loose arm around my waist as he fell asleep instantly. So I came all the way to the south side for mansplaining and a half-assed cuddle.
Not the last time I had sex, but it was the last time i came close. Almost doesn’t count though (thanks, Brandy). While my libido is making itself more known I figure I have a couple options - chalk it up to ovulation and ride it out, get on my dating app game, or wait for a man to fall out of the sky. That last option seems least likely; too bad modern dating is for the birds. Oh well. Now’s as good a time as any to pick up a pink razor and start smoothing things out down there.

24 Children’s Books To Read To Your Kids In Honor Of Black History Month
24 Children’s Books to Read to Your Kids in Honor of Black History Month. And year-round, of course.
By #TaylorPittman
February marks #BlackHistoryMonth , and story-time is just one of the many occasions when you can teach your kids about the accomplishments of black pioneers and trailblazers.
Children’s books are famously bad at embracing diversity. In 2016, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that out of 3,400 kids’ books, fewer than one-quarter of them featured a main character who was black, Asian, Latino or Native American. So it’s vital that parents share the books that are available with their kids.
Luckily, there are many helpful resources putting these titles within close reach. For Black History Month, Lee & Low Books, a multicultural children’s book publisher, offers helpful book recommendations. Every day in February, The Brown Bookshelf highlights a different black author or illustrator and their work. Helping Kids Rise also participates in a #ReadingBlackout (an initiative to read books by black authors) at the encouragement of YouTuber Denise Cooper.
With suggestions from the organizations above, plus some others, we put together a list of kids’ books by black authors, about black figures or focused on black culture.
