Embracing Transparency: The Rise of Clean Label Food Colors
In today's health-conscious society, consumers are increasingly scrutinizing the ingredients in their food and beverages. This has led to a growing demand for clean label products, with emphasis on natural and recognizable ingredients. One area that has garnered attention is food coloring. The shift towards clean label food colors represents a significant milestone in the food industry, offering consumers a more transparent and wholesome choice. In this guide, we'll explore the concept of clean label food colors, their benefits, and their impact on the food industry.
Tumblr media
What Are Clean Label Food Colors?
Clean label food colors are natural colorants derived from plant, fruit, and vegetable sources, as well as other naturally occurring substances. Unlike traditional artificial colorings, clean label colors are free from synthetic chemicals, additives, and artificial preservatives. They are made using processes that retain the integrity of the original source material.
The Benefits of Clean Label Food Colors
Transparency and Trust: Clean label food colors provide consumers with transparency about what they are consuming. With recognizable, natural ingredients, there is a higher level of trust in the product.
Reduced Allergen Risk: Synthetic colorings can sometimes contain allergenic compounds. Clean label food colors, sourced from natural ingredients, are less likely to cause allergic reactions.
Health Consciousness: Consumers are increasingly concerned about the impact of artificial additives on their health. Clean label food colors align with this trend, offering a more health-conscious alternative.
Cleaner Labeling: Clean label food colors allow for cleaner and more straightforward ingredient lists. This appeals to consumers who prefer products with fewer, more familiar ingredients.
Sustainability and Environmental Considerations: Many clean label food colors are sourced from renewable plant-based materials, making them more environmentally friendly than some synthetic alternatives.
Meeting Regulatory Standards: Clean label food colors often have a simpler regulatory approval process compared to synthetic colors, which can be subject to more stringent testing and oversight.
Natural Flavor Complement: Clean label food colors can often provide subtle flavor enhancements, contributing to a more authentic taste profile in the final product.
Impact on the Food Industry
Product Innovation: The rise of clean label food colors has prompted food manufacturers to explore creative ways to incorporate natural colors into their products. This has led to a surge in innovative and visually appealing food offerings.
Consumer-Centric Marketing: Food companies are increasingly highlighting the use of clean label food colors in their marketing efforts. This resonates with health-conscious consumers who seek products that align with their values.
Ingredient Sourcing and Traceability: The demand for clean label food colors has led to a focus on ingredient sourcing and supply chain transparency. This emphasis on traceability ensures that the sourcing of natural colors meets high-quality standards.
Regulatory Compliance: The food industry is adapting to meet regulatory standards for clean label products, ensuring that clean label food colors meet the necessary safety and quality requirements.
Tumblr media
The emergence of clean label food colors reflects a broader shift towards transparency, natural ingredients, and consumer empowerment. As more individuals seek wholesome, recognizable ingredients, the demand for clean label food colors is likely to continue growing. Food manufacturers, in turn, are responding by innovating with natural color sources, enhancing product offerings, and prioritizing ingredient transparency. This evolution in food coloring not only meets consumer preferences but also fosters a more health-conscious and sustainable food industry. Embracing clean label food colors is a step towards a more transparent and wholesome approach to food production.

Desserts in China
There's quite a large variety of treats and desserts in China (more than you can imagine), so here are some of the most common ones!
Almond jelly/tofu - 杏仁豆腐 - xìngréndòufu Despite the name, almond jelly doesn't actually have almonds in it. Almond jelly is made from gelatin and almond milk, although some recepies use dairy milk instead.
Glutinous rice balls - 汤圆 - tāngyuán These rice balls are made from glutinous rice balls with a sweet filling, such as red bean paste (a pretty popular filling in desserts, I've been fooled more than once when purchasing what I assumed to be a chocolate filled pastry).
Red bean buns - 豆沙包 - dòushābāo One of my favorite desserts so far. These are steamed buns with a sweet red bean paste filling that I'd definitely recommend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Egg custard bun - 流沙包 - liúshābāo A sweet and savory bun, with a lava-like egg yolk filling. A pretty interesting dessert, as it's both sweet and savory.
Pumpkin cake - 南瓜饼 - nánguābǐng I haven't tried this yet, but it definitely looks good. A fried and crunchy cake with a sweet filling such as red bean paste.
Eight treasure rice pudding - 八宝饭 -bābǎofàn This is a pretty popular dessert, especially during the Lunar New Year. It gets this name becase of the toppings, which are eight or more different types of dried fruits and nuts arranged on top of the sweet rice, with (once again) red bean paste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawthorn stick/ Candied Haws/ Sugar coated haws/ Bingtanghulu - 冰糖葫芦 - bīngtánghúlu This treat has quite a few translations and you may have probably already seen it. This is basically candied fruit covered with a sweet, crunchy and sugary syrup. Traditionally, Hawthorn is used but other fruits such as grapes, strawberries and oranges are also popular options.
Sachima - 沙琪玛 - shāqímǎ I haven't tried this snack yet, but it looks quite fascinating. Sachima is made from fried batter stuck together with a sugary syrup, with an interesting texture.
Sesame balls - 芝麻球 - zhīmaqiú Similar to the rice glutinous balls, this treat is also made from glutinous rice flour with varying fillings including lotus seeds, mung bean and red beans, and sesame seeds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Water chestnut cake A sweet pan-fried cake made from chinese water chestnut, with a unique semi-transparent appearance.
Wintermelon puff/ Wife cake/ Sweetheartcake - 老婆餅 - lǎopóbǐng This cake has many names, mainly because it has several different origin stories, each more fascinating than the next. This dessert is a flaky pastry with wintermelon, almond (not red bean this time!) paste and sesame filling.
Fortune cake - 发糕 - fāgāo Not a fortune cookie! This is a spongy steamed cupcake cake commonly made for the New Lunar Year celebrations and occasionally other events. They're usually a white-ish or brown-ish color, but they're often dyed bright colors to add extra festivity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mooncake - 月饼 - yuèbǐng This is a pretty well-known dessert, commonly prepared for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Mooncakes are smallish steamd/fried (depends on the region) cakes with a sweet filling that can also sometimes have an egg yolk inside.
Osmanthus cake - 桂花糕 - guìhuāgāo This is a unique traditional pastry made from glutinous rice flour, honey and osmanthus. This cake has a really interesting texture, as it's quite dense but also airy in a way? I'd definitely recommend trying it, as it's not super sweet and goes really well with tea.

Here ye, hear ye! I do declare I headcanon
Hobie ALWAYS smells good asf
Without exception.
It's something you can always notice, because every day he smells slightly different. But always good.
It's on purpose.
I mean, look at all his accessories and clothes - he probably has a nightstand piled high with spiked bracelets and studded chokers and silver rings. And right next to his accessories - is his cologne collection.
Some bottles are older, half filled bottles of vintage finds he loves. Others are newer, fancier - ones knicked from high end shops. If he smells it, and likes it, he takes it.
His favorite are the woody, smoky, spiced smells. Like sandalwood or cognac. Things that smell like shag carpets and roaring fireplaces.
Sometimes he may be in the mood for something a bit sweeter, so sometimes he'll of dark chocolate, or maple syrup, or chai.
The most common ones are surprisingly fruity.
Hobie often smells of cherries. Dark, deep maroon cherries, the kind with sweet dark juice. Others, on more playful days - green apple, a little bit tart but still fresh.
I Hc he likes candy too, and is constantly popping jolly ranchers. Sometimes you can hear it when he's eating one, the quiet clacking of it - and the faint scent of blue raspberry, or super sweet watermelon.
When it comes to Spider Senses, I like to think Hobie is a sensory seeker.
He likes loud music and big speakers and heavy, layered clothes. He's likes strong sounds and scents, bright colors, and interesting textures. And cologne is one of his favorite parts of an outfit -
Cause he does consider it just that - apart of the outfit. Don't let Mr.'Cool This Whole Time' fool you - he thinks about outfits. Hobie really enjoys putting them together.
He's actually into fashion - just not in the industrial consumerist way most assume. But he still loves matching pieces, making them, putting together fits. And he never leaves the house without some fragrance.
It REALLY adds to the appeal.
Diane's trying to talk to him about work when they first meet and she's already nervous
and then she's can't help but notice and be like 'oh- WOW, you smell good. Heh. wOW. Sorry. Sorry. I just did not expect you to smell like cherry blossoms-'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'....thanks-'
'oh goodness, wait a minute, that's not it. I - I don't even think I could place that scent-'
She's standing there in the middle of the hall smelling Hobie - train of thought derailed the tracks and rolling down a mountainside, Miguel's work forgotten
Hobie goes 'its jasmine, really. Jasmine and saffron'
Diane's like 'JASMINE AND SAFFRON??? Boy. whatchu know about some Jasmine Saffron!'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cause how dare he. How dare he be that fine. It's not okay. How can she live her life in these conditions?
She goes to tell Margo like 'Girl!! Did you know Hobie wears cologne?!' and Margo is like
'... Sis I'm not even physically here what makes you think I can smell'
Even Miguel notices after a while.
It's a group meeting, and he's lost in thought as he rambles off another plan, pacing back and forth.
He stops suddenly when something comes to mind.
'Who's that? Whereas that smell coming from? It smells like Horchata in here. Who was drinking Horchata??'
Cause if someone was drinking Horchata he wants some. Undebatable.
Half the room is like what the hell is Horchata???
Miguel's like 'it's cinnamon and rice and vanilla - it's a Mexican drink, alright. WHO WAS DRINKING IT.'
Hobie raises his hand and Miguel's like 'Not now, Brown. We're talking about something important.'
Hobies like 'Bruv it's me. I ain't drink it I just smell like it-'
Of course Miguel is calling bullshit cause he's sure Hobie is fucking with him until he goes over and Miguel's thinking 'oh fuck he does 😳🤨 que diablos???'
But he just looks down at Hobies smug ass face and he's like '.... As you were, 138.' before trying to act like nothing ever happened 😭😭
I think to think Hobie Brown is just That Smooth
The good looks ain't by accident he is BROKE, PUNK, and HIGH MAINTENANCE

Cooking with Luffy 🤏🏻💗
I apologize if there are a mistakes , as I said, English is not my first language 😭
Warnings: nothing
Fluff
Tumblr media
"Mommmm, I'm hungry!!!" Luffy sighed in frustration.
You chuckled slightly as you handed him a cookbook you recently bought.
"How about we cook something of your choice?" you said, smiling as you handed him the book.
He jumped with joy, picking out what he wanted, his eyes landing on a dish.
"Mom, what do you think about this?!" he exclaimed enthusiastically, pointing to a dish consisting of meat, rice, and eggs.
"Oh, that's called Jūdon. It takes about twenty minutes to cook," you replied, smiling.
"Let's make it then!" he shouted excitedly, pulling you into the kitchen.
"First, I need to put the rice on the pot-" You were interrupted as you found the rice container in front of you.
You patted Luffy's head, then started putting the rice on steam to proceed to the next step.
"Alright, next, we need beef, and we have to cut it into slices," you said calmly as you took out the knife from the drawer.
"Here's the beef, go ahead and wash and cut it into slices," he handed it to you.
"Now, we also need white onions and cut them into small slices."
"Let me do this!!!" he shouted eagerly as he cleaned and started cutting them, tears forming in his eyes.
"Luffy, are you crying over an onion?" you asked dramatically.
"No, I'm not like that, I'm a man!" he said as he continued to hold back his tears, showing you the plate of onions he cut.
"Well done, very good!" you said as you patted his head.
"Now, do we have soy sauce? All I see is dust," as Luffy ran to the fridge and returned before you could blink.
"Yes, we do!" he said enthusiastically as he handed you the sauce.
"We won't use mirin in this dish, so we'll put in sugar syrup, honey, rice vinegar, and water," you explained as Luffy put the ingredients in a bowl and mixed them.
"We also need brown sugar."
"We have itttt!"
"And we also need pickled ginger."
"Is this enough?" Luffy innocently wondered, his eyes sparkling (I want to eat him already).
"Yes, it's enough. Now let's start. Get the frying pan ready," you said.
"Got it."
You placed the pan on the stove and started frying the chopped white onions.
"Look, Luffy, watch us first fry the onions until they become soft like this," you said calmly after noticing the smoothness of the onions, Luffy watched with interest.
"Now, we'll add the beef we cut earlier with the pickled ginger," you said with a smile as Luffy handed you the plate of beef and ginger for you to put in the pan.
"Look, Luffy, isn't the color of the beef beautiful?" you said excitedly as Luffy stared at the meat as if it were his salvation, muttering the word "meat" as he reached his hand towards it, only for you to gently slap it away, making him withdraw his hand.
"Careful not to touch hot things, Luffy!"
"Okayyy."
"Now we add the sauce we mixed earlier and wait for about three minutes until it thickens," you explained calmly as you added the rice.
Luffy brought two plates to put the rice on.
"Luffy, please turn off the stove," you asked calmly as you set the table.
"Got it!" he shouted enthusiastically as he looked at you with warmth.
"Now let's put the sauce on top of the rice. Do you want to do this?"
"Yes!!!" he placed the sauce gently, shaping it into a smiling face on his plate and a heart on yours, making you laugh a little and pat his head.
"I feel like we forgot something," you said, putting your hands under your chin to think about what you forgot, Luffy ran to get the book and placed it in front of your face.
"We forgot the boiled eggs!" he said, pointing to the picture of the dish with his finger.
"Oh, you're right." You quickly boiled the eggs and placed them on the plate, starting to eat.
"Delicious!!!" Luffy exclaimed excitedly as he tasted his food.
You smiled back.
This is what food looks like 😭-
