You know what I think would be fun, as Mass Effect trilogy romantic drama?

Jacob and Bryn were a couple pre-ME2, but broke up because they were too busy and never saw each other/she thought he wasn’t committed enough to Cerberus.

Shepard and Kaidan (or Ash) were a couple pre-Alchera, and broke up on Horizon for the usual “WHY TF ARE YOU A TERRORIST ZOMBIE” reasons.

Shepard and Jacob then have a confused love affair based round random horny, “I’m sad and lonely and need cuddles!!”, and possibly Jacob half-heartedly trying to manipulate Shepard into liking Cerberus more.

Post-ME2, everyone winds up on the same side and gets back with their original partners. There aren’t too many hard feelings!

Bryn ducked behind a rock in the Pandora landscape, trading shots with a pair of bandits and cursing herself under her breath for managing to get ambushed. During the lull in the bandits’ fire, she flicked on her tactical cloak and sprinted to higher ground before they could process where she’d gone.

Once she reached her destination, she took careful aim and fired, making short work of one of the bandits. The characteristic surge of her cloak’s power cells amplifying the shot overheated the system, rendering her visible again. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted someone coming down the road toward their little firefight. Hopefully they weren’t another bandit.

OC FACT SWAP! my first ever shep, marianne (ruthless and earth born), is completely clueless about her heritage as she was orphaned at a young age and it was a nurse that named her marianne. she grew up in a predominantly latinx neighbourhood and is fluent in spanish. her first crush was a turian merc who often worked with the gang she ran with as favours to the gang's leader, so when she fell for garrus she was not surprised but she still wanted to explode

Oh you know there’s something about Earth Born Shepards that I appreciate so much. Something about the connection to the home planet?

My canon Shepard was a Sole Survivor and Earthborn herself! When she talked about growing up, she never sugarcoat it. It was tough, it was hard, and she’s still shaken by a lot of it. Growing up with such a rough background follows you as you grow up, into spaces and people too.

But because she was Shepard, no one (not even her crew at first) thought it bothered her. She got over it, right? She’s saving the world now.

It was Jacob Taylor who actually sat by her, and confronted those demons with her. He could never ever understand the life she lived, but you know what? When a soldier’s down, you help your fellow fighter. 

They learned a little something about each other that night.

(I completely headcanon Dr. Bryn Cole out of my Shep’s story because it really doesn’t do Jacob’s character any justice. When things get better and the world’s piecing itself back, Jacob takes her down to that little bar in Rio.)

Three Fandoms

I was tagged by the wonderful @queen-of-the-crows I am VERY late... I’m so sorry! Okay here we go! 

Rules: Choose any three fandoms (in random order) and answer the questions, then tag people you wanna know better.

Three Fandoms: Dragon age / TES (I’ll stick to skyrim for this) / Mass Effect 

The first character you loved:  Dragon age ~ Alistair, and it was awkward. I had NO clue what I was doing, I kept giving him the wrong gifts, saying the wrong thing... Meanwhile I had Zev and Leliana telling me how great I was. When it finally happened i was thrilled... And then I died anyway... SIGH. 

Skyrim ~ Farkas. The man is a literal beast, can rip men apart or cleave them in two, and writes notes to his brother asking him to remove a spider from his room, because he’s scared of them... There is just something endearing about that.

Mass Effect ~ Wrex. He’s a cranky, older, krogan merc with a short fuse... But holy shit I love him!!! I can’t explain this, he’s just... Awesome. He made the team on every mission.

The character you relate to the most:  Dragon age ~ Hawke. without a doubt! I wasn’t blessed with superhuman powers, I just keep being put in totally unbelievable situations with only my humor and sarcasm to save me. Someday I’ll end up in the fade with a giant spider demon... Bugger.

Skyrim ~ This is tricky because TES games not known for their ‘Deep character writing’. Uhh... Sheogorath, daedric prince of madness.  The Isles, the Isles. A wonderful place! Except when it's horrible. Then it's horribly wonderful. Good for a visit. Or for an eternity. 

Mass Effect ~ Jack, although I am in no way as cool, i’m probably equally as damaged, and most definitely as foul mouthed. 

The character you’d slap:

Dragon age ~ Bianca... The real one. Okay, firstly, Varric and FemHawke SHOULD be together, at least in my bloody playthrough they damn well should be! Secondly, she shows up after CREATING the damn situation and then has the nerve to threaten you?! Nuh uh. Nope, sorry. Bitch slap into the abyss. 

Skyrim ~ Luckily, you get to brawl some assholes in the game, but they left a few people off the list, namely Nazeem and Maven Black-Briar... And those sisters in solitude... And Elenwen...  Actually, Pretty much 90% of people in the game could use a slap to be fair. 

Mass Effect ~ Miranda. Oooh boy and how. Stuck up snooty bitch.

A character you didn’t like at first but do now:

Dragon age ~ Isabela. My first Hawke was a duel wielding rogue, as such (and because I adore Varric), I never took her on any missions, so she took the book and pissed off for good. However, even though I still think her taking the book in the first place was SO DUMB, I do love her dialog, and her as a character.  

Skyrim ~ Brynjolf. So, I show up in Riften for the first time, try and get swindled by the guards, get threatened, witness a stable hand get threatened, so I offer to go into the inn and sort shit out. After a ‘to the point’ conversation with Sapphire, I turn to get a well earned room for the evening when, ‘Never earned a honest coin in your life, have you lass?’ WTF? A, who the fuck are you? B, what the hell has it got to do with you?! But honestly, Bryn is a sweetheart! 

Mass Effect ~ Miranda. Although over time I have come to appreciate her a LOT more, first playthrough I despised her...Like a whole bunch, as in, on my first mission, I just took Jacob, luckily we picked up Zaeed along the way. But to be fair to her, she’s more screwed up than most people in the game, despite seemingly having it all.

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

Brynjolf/DB is a big one! I mean, I enjoy some shippy stuff for them, but as time has gone on I kinda feel like… Bryn’s just not interested. Plus it’d probably feel kinda weird for him, since he definitely functions as the DB’s mentor. Or maybe it’s just because when I first started writing Skyrim fic I wrote the worst Brynjolf/DB fic ever (which will never see the light of day, thank you) and my own inability to make it work turned me off from the pairing over time. There’s a non-zero chance that’s the root cause of it all.

I also somewhat prefer Danse/Sole Survivor as a BroTP (again, the mentor thing), but I feel less strongly about that one.

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?

Not so much now, but I went from really liking Dragon Age to really hating Dragon Age around the time Trespasser was released. I’m back around neutral now. (still not planning on buying another BioWare game anytime soon, though).

Also will throw the Vilkas/DB ship in here, because, as I’ve mentioned before, the popular fics I found for this tended to be filled with particularly egregious examples of “let me mischaracterize this female character as a jealous harpy so that there can be some drama as my (usually female) DB falls in love.” Other pairings do this, too, don’t get me wrong, but the prevalence of it in some of the most popular fics left a bad taste in my mouth and as a result it’s the one Skyrim ship I blacklist.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

Most of Bioshock Infinite tbh? Honestly I would have liked Bioshock Infinite SO MUCH MORE if Booker and Elizabeth weren’t related. Not for shipping reasons or anything (he’s still so much older than her and sees her as a kid. that’s not a good basis for a relationship, sorry), but because the sudden shift to “she’s my daughter I must protect her” totally contradicts one of the lessons of the first two games, which is that family should be more about who you choose to love than about biological bonds.

Also not a fan of the whole “Here Lies the Abyss” quest (and most of the main questline, tbh) in DAI. There’s an imbalance between what the player presumably knows and what the characters know, and the main quest as a whole depends too much on information that isn’t in any of the base games.

AND ALSO EVERYTHING TO DO WITH KAI LENG. WHAT A USELESS ADDITION TO ME3.

17.  Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…

Instead of using Kai Leng, I would have brought back an old character that was either resurrected like Shepard was (after Shepard was) or was always on the fence between helping Shepard and preferring Cerberus.

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Admittedly I hesitate to call anything “pure,” mostly because it’s absolutely possible to fuck up any ship, but I’d go with Preston/Sole Survivor.

21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?

IN MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, ships I think of as crack ships very rarely stay at that status. They usually become full blown ships. So bring ‘em on, but be warned that I may start to take them seriously.

22. Popular character you hate?

I do… not like Solas or Cullen. At all. I just kinda blacklist them and try not to pay attention when they show up on my dash, but on occasion tumblr recommends me a blog that’s only about one of them and I’m like… why…….

Ooh 🧠 for Adam and Bryn! They seem pretty differents after all lol

If anyone wants a thread with their switched selves, I'm open to it! For now, here's a short storyish thing. I think it was supposed to be a couple-sentence answer, but I got carried away. Enjoy!

Note: This is an especially amusing switch to me because they both live with a dark-haired, athletic, not-quite-magic-user named Kaidan. Also, Shepard has quite a bit of a mouth on her, and Kaidan (Alenko, not Lazuli) gets pretty upset, so... warning for that if strong language bothers you.

Adam Neverfall

Adam woke in an unfamiliar bed- no, an unfamiliar body. A dark-haired man lay next to them, one arm wrapped around their newly petite shoulders as he slept peacefully. They slipped from under his arm and out of the bed, hesitating a moment at the sight of the metal floor. Gingerly, they stood, realizing how tiny their new body was- comparatively, at least. The floor didn’t burn, and they relaxed.

A quick glance around the room revealed a lot of information, none of which made sense. Along one wall of the oddly-shaped room, a long glass tank teemed with fish, most of which Adam didn’t recognize. A few steps led up to an office area, but before Adam could investigate much of what was on the desk, a horrible screech sounded to their right.

“Stars!” They stumbled away from the sound, falling sprawled across the floor, staring up at some sort of twisted humanoid head sitting on the desk, which grunted and growled at them.

“Shepard? What’re you doing?” The sleepy voice prompted Adam to look back at the bed, where the man had sat up and was looking at them with clear concern.

“Nothing, I’m fine. Go back to sleep. I just... “ Adam braced themself for the choking inability to speak that usually accompanied a lie, but it never came. “um, forgot that infernal thing was there.” Adam said hurriedly as they got up, wrinkling their nose at the thing in question, which snapped at them. It was not unlike the zombies in the movies Alex often showed them. They didn’t like it.

“Right. Goodnight, Jean.”

“Goodnight.” Adam gave a small sigh of relief as they turned back to the desk, only to find themself suddenly frozen in place, frost crackling across their skin. 

Suddenly, the man was by their side, pressing some sort of high-tech pistol to Adam’s temple. “Shepard’s name is Bryn. So who the fuck are you?”

Bryn Shepard

The first thing Shepard noticed when she woke was that she was alone. The second was that she was no longer in a bed. Instead, she swung in a hammock near the ceiling. She leaped from the hammock, only noticing the third thing upon landing. 

She wasn’t herself. 

For one thing, she was at least a foot taller, and for another, she had- were those... wings? Her hair brushed her neck as she tried to look over her shoulder to see the appendages on her back, and she shuddered.

She needed a mirror. And a weapon.

The weapon came easier. On the small nightstand- why did someone who slept in a hammock also have a nightstand?- she found a long, sheathed dagger that looked to be made of some sort of polished glass or stone. It wasn’t a gun, but good enough. That sorted, she crept out into the apartment, dagger in hand. 

She found the bathroom easily, and nearly dropped her knife at the sight of her reflection. She did, in fact, have wings- translucent, dragonfly-like wings that flittered with her nerves. Her ears were also pointed, and her facial features sharp, almost catlike. She looked away, determined to focus on getting back to herself... somehow. A knock sounded at the bathroom door, and she whirled to face it, falling into a combat stance that, admittedly, felt fairly awkward and off-balance with her new, lankier proportions.

“Adam! Are you almost done in there?” She relaxed at the casual tone of the voice. Maybe she could pull this off. At least now she knew the name of the... fairy?... whose face she wore now. She flipped the knife in her hand to an angle that should help it go unnoticed and opened the door, coming face-to-face with a dark-haired, blue-eyed young man.

“Yeah. All yours.” She ducked past him and into the nearest room, which happened to be the kitchen. Another man stood at the stove, his back to her as he cooked.

“Morning! Breakfast?” He turned to her, setting aside the steaming cast-iron pan and pulling another pan that looked like it was made from aluminum from the cupboard. She set the knife on the table as she crossed to the stove, reaching for the handle of the pan. 

No sooner did she touch the metal than a searing pain streaked across her palm. “Shit!” She cursed, snatching her hand away from the scalding pan and inspecting the red, quickly blistering burn across her palm. “Fuck, the handle looked cool!”

The man who had been cooking froze, staring at Shepard like she’d grown a second head. “Are... are you alright?”

"I mean..." she glanced up at him, then back down at her hand, "I've had worse."

"Why did you grab it? It's iron."

Shepard blinked, not understanding. "So?"

"So it burns you! You told me this yourself, are you sure you're ok?" He snapped, turning away from his cooking.

She gave up trying to blend in, and snapped back. "No, I'm not fucking okay! I'm not this Adam person you keep calling me..." she paused, thinking, "...or, I guess I am, I'm pretty sure this is their body, but my mind, me, the person talking? Not them."

"Oh."

Maybe a long shot but I’m a f!Morgan from Fire Emblem Awakening who became a vessel for Grima. Robin (who was named Bryn) accepted Lucinda’s judgement and died. My twin brother Marc and I never got to know that version of her. Marc became the Shepard’s new tactician and I went darkside and brought about the return of Grima after Chrom had sealed them away. I’m mainly looking for Grima but I’d also kinda like to apologize for the me that was and what I did then so if anyone else wants to talk...?
