Exploding Coffee Machines by inkinmyheartandonthepage (@inkinmyheartandonthepage) | 9k | General
Buck couldn’t be blamed for falling in love with his neighbour. He was powerless against the Diaz boys and wanted nothing more than to be swept up in their everything. Buck thought that Eddie felt the same, that their feelings of more than just being platonic best friends was mutual. Buck had been hopeful that Eddie inviting him to his boss’s house to meet his friends and co-workers meant that they were taking a step in the right direction.
A step that now Buck was going to be late for OR Buck gets burned at work and worries that he's blown his shot with Eddie when he runs late to meet his friends.
What is Love For $2000? by fayevian 17k | Mature
On the screen, the camera pans down as they introduce the contestants. Mary, on her 3rd day winning streak, is a dowdy teacher type. Center stage is occupied by a graying man with loopy handwriting named Auggie. And all the way to the right is… Evan. Damn. --- One night when Eddie can't sleep, he discovers the hottest Jeopardy contestant of all time (objectively). With the "help" of his team and his fairly good working knowledge of Twitter, they devise a plan to get Evan (from Jeopardy) to slide into Eddie's DMs. It works surprisingly well.

Buck Buckley (@/firefighterbuck): @/eddiediaz I’ll never be able to tug your hair now, huh?
Eddie Diaz (@/eddiediaz): @/firefighterbuck It’s against the rules, anyway. You don’t look like a fighter, though. What situation would we be in that would make you want to tug my hair?

They follow the room numbers down the hallway until the last door on the right. It’s slightly ajar, and when Eddie knocks politely, it opens further.
“Hey,” a cheerful, male voice says. “You guys are early!”
When Eddie spots the source of the voice, he nearly swallows his tongue.
The man is tall, with broad shoulders and huge arms, a sunny smile on his face that looks so genuine Eddie can’t help but smile back. There’s a splash of pink over his one eye, his hair is just the slightest bit curly, and his eyes are startlingly blue. He’s also about 80% legs, and leaning on a cane to walk.
Belatedly, Eddie remembers that he should say something too, not just stare at this guy approaching them.
“Uh,” he starts eloquently. “Sorry. This one was getting impatient at home ~ Newly arrived to LA, Eddie decides to take his son to parent/child cooking classes. The instructor is so much more than he expected

New in Los Angeles, and having recently admitted to himself that he's gay, Eddie figures that hiring a sex worker might be a good way to keep his private life cut off from his job and his son. A way to keep things from becoming too complicated.

“Wait, you need a sitter?” Chimney says. Eddie nods. “Maddie’s brother got back in town a few nights ago, he’s looking for work.”
Eddie frowns. He doesn’t know much about this mysterious brother of Maddie’s – doesn’t even really know much about Maddie, either, aside from being Chimney’s girlfriend – but he’s pretty sure every time he’s been brought up in conversation it’s not been particularly inspiring. “Is this the brother who flunked out of college because he spent all his tuition on a motorcycle?”
Chimney colours a little. “Um. No?”

Eddie doesn't know much about Chris' science teacher, except that he's his son favorite and apparently knows everything there's to know. ( Those were Christopher's words. )
So when he enters the classroom, expecting an old man dressed nicely but a little old-fashioned as the science teacher, his whole life crashes to a halt.
"Evan?" The man who's leaning against the desk, looking at some papers, suddenly startles and looks up at Eddie with wide blue eyes.
"Holy shit," It's what the man says after spending at least a minute opening and closing his mouth. or; Eddie met Evan when he was a bartender in Peru and Eddie was on vacation with his cousins. Buck is the incredibly kind but incredibly straight bartender at Eddie's local gay bar. Eddie is trying very, very hard not to be pathetically in love with him, and is failing miserably.
“Hey, you’re back,” Buck had said, greeting him with that sun-bright grin, and Eddie had yet again been reminded why he’d started questioning his sexuality.
“Well, I get one night off a week. And tonight I could really use the drink.”
Buck’s brow had furrowed, and he got Eddie his favorite beer without even asking again what it was. “You need to talk about it? Assuming I read you right and you’re the kind of guy who talks to a bartender instead of a therapist.”
Eddie had winced theatrically. “Ouch. That obvious, huh?”
“Hey, man, you’re the one that told me you started coming here on your coworker’s advice. Feels like something you’d get from a therapist, if you had one.”

“Shut up,” Buck grumbles at the dog. “It’s not a crush.”
Buck walks out of the room, out the backdoor, and into the yard, trying to ignore his large and judgmental dog following behind him.
“I don’t want to hear it,” Buck tells him as he gets the hose out to start watering his plants. “Keep it to yourself.”
“Who are you talking to?”
Buck startles and drops the hose, doing a quick 180-degree turn and coming face-to-face with Eddie. He’s clearly standing on something, elbows folded over the top of the fence and chin resting on them as he looks at Buck. His expression looks almost fond and it kind of makes Buck want to both preen and die of embarrassment. -- Or, the one where Buck owns a doggy daycare, has a large dog with an attitude, and is hopelessly in love with his new neighbor.

Eddie Diaz does not need a noisy neighbor on top of all the shit he's trying to work out.
But he does make really good mac and cheese. -- “You know,” And Buck is meeting his eyes now. They’re uncannily blue. Like Kool-Aid or popsicles. “If you want, I could show you what I get up to up there?”
What? WHAT? Eddie feels heat spread from the tips of his ears to his toes. No way had he just gotten propositioned before sunrise in the decrepit hallway of their apartment building. “Um. No.” He backs up until his calves brush the door to 101. “Thank you, really. But no.”

BUT IT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT [1.7k | post poker date spec (?) | angst with a happy ending] {ao3}
title from afterglow by taylor swift, for @singlethread enjoy
Buck feels…happy as they exit the back room, their wallets filled to the brim. There’s a buzz under their skin from winning, from the alcohol, and the good company.
Eddie orders the Uber and it’s tensely quiet as they ride through the streets of LA back to the loft. The air is charged and Eddie keeps looking at him when he thinks he’s not looking.
They make it up the stairs and into the apartment before either of them say anything really.
“Beer?” Buck asks, gently placing his jacket on the counter. Eddie hums as he takes the already offered bottle. He leaves his jacket on.
“How did you know? The seventeen seconds? Everyone told me it was three minutes. But you-“
“Because I counted all of them.” Eddie replies, biting his lip, “And those seventeen seconds lasted a lifetime Buck. And it was seventeen seconds because of me.”
Buck cocks his head, his brow scrunched.
“I- I was the one who—no one?”
“What Eddie? I may be able to do math now but I think I need you to spell this one out for me.”
Eddie bites his lip again and studies the pattern of the granite countertop.
“I was the one who brought you back to life,” he replies softly and quietly. Like it’s fragile. Like it’s admitting something else entirely.
“Oh.” Buck breathes just as soft. “I guess I never said thank you. So, thank you. I—“
“I owed you one,” Eddie replies, taking a sip of beer.
“Still. Thank you.” he says it sincerely, trying to convey every part of it to Eddie. Because if he’s honest he’s still reeling from it. There’s still a tingle under his skin. He jokes about it with Maddie. And the night in the kitchen hadn’t changed much, just given a little perspective. But he still hadn’t found his level as Dr. Salazar put it. The most at peace he had felt was with Eddie in that parking lot waiting for an Uber.
“Did you have fun?” Eddie asks, breaking the spiral, he saw it coming no doubt and pulled Buck right back out.
“Yeah, thanks for that too. It’s been a long time since I went out, got dressed up and stuff you know? And I’ve only ever played poker with Maddie.”
“You never—“ Eddie cuts himself off and clears his throat, “I'm glad. Been awhile for me too I guess.”
A silence fills every corner of the loft. Buck swears he can hear the neighbors arguing in the apartment across the hall. And he’s frozen. And Eddie steps closer.
The silence grows impossibly bigger.
And Eddie kisses him.
It’s soft and chaste and everything that a first kiss should be.
But he can’t kiss back. He can’t get his hands to move to Eddie’s hips. Can't open his mouth to make room for Eddie’s tongue. He almost wants to cry. And a small whimper escapes. He wishes he could explain it. But he can’t even look at him.
“I'm sorry,” he whispers, his eyes squeezed shut.
“It's okay,” Eddie replies, placing his beer on the island, and letting his hands run over Buck's arms like receding tides as he slips away.
The door clicks shut and he presses the heels of his hands over his eyes. All he can do is strip off the suit that Eddie had shoved into his arms in a garment bag not hours ago, and crawl into bed and try to sleep. ___
“Eddito, what’s wrong?” Pepa asks as soon as she opens the door. He has his hands shoved in his sweatpants pockets. His mouth twists and he shakes his head and leans down to hug her. She kisses his cheeks like always.
“How’s Christopher?” he asks instead.
“Perfect Angelito, as always,”
“Don’t let him hear you say that,” he smiles sadly.
“I remember another Angel that had that phase.” She pats his cheek as he sits at the kitchen table and hands him his mug of coffee with a teaspoon of sugar and a dash of cinnamon.
“He’s still sleeping,” she slips into her own chair, “I met this very nice girl at the hair salon this week. She’s new in town, looking for people her own age…maybe someone to date…?”
Eddie swallows past the memory of Buck’s still lips against his.
How perfect everything had been up until that point. He swallows again, “You can give her my number,” he concedes. The acid crawling up his throat.
“Are you sure?”
He grimaces but still nods, “I should get back out there. It's been a long time since I've been on a date. It would be good to try again.”
He sips his coffee and the minutes tick by until Christopher makes his way into the kitchen.
“Mornin’ Dad,” Chris grumbles but still leans in for a hug.
“Hey kid,” he replies with a soft smile and ruffles his hair. Chris frowns a little.
“Can we go to the diner for breakfast?”
Eddie had been promising they would go for a few weeks.
“Sure. Say thank you to Pepa.”
He grumbles something that sounds a little bit like Gracias and Eddie just smiles at Pepa and she nods with understanding.
He gets a text a few days later,
Hi this is Emma, your aunt gave me your number.
They coordinate to get coffee on Wednesday morning after his shift.
On Monday he asks Buck if he can get Chris to school on Wednesday morning.
“What are you going to be doing?” Chimney asks as they hope the bell doesn’t ring in the last few minutes of their shift.
Eddie glances at Buck a little nervously, “I um, I’m going on a date. My aunt set us up.”
Chimney’s mouth snaps shut over a retort after Hen lightly slaps his arm. But it’s Buck who takes off, the glass he was drying hitting the counter close to dangerously hard, saying something about getting a head start on his shower.
---
Eddie had a date. A date. The very thought felt spiky, poking Buck in the chest. And most of all it hurt. Which made him feel guilty. Cause if anyone was hurt it was Eddie. He lets the water wash over him, it hadn’t even been that bad of a shift. No horrendous calls. But they had been out almost the entire time, never making it back to the station for more than an hour. And he couldn’t stop thinking about Eddie’s lips on his and how the closest he had felt close to at peace and level was when he was with Eddie. Even today, while they barely looked at each other but still were impossible to separate. He felt it alone too, just not quite as comfortable in it. Not as fully.
When he finally shakes himself free of the spiral and exits the shower, B shift is already in full swing of things and Eddie’s truck is not in the parking lot.
He has no idea what he wants to say, he just knows that he has to kiss him. For real.
It feels wrong to waltz in like he usually does, because Eddie doesn’t know he’s coming. So he knocks. And before Eddie can say a thing Buck blurts,
“Don’t go on that date tomorrow. If you really want to you can, but I just– I can’t let you do that.”
“So I can’t date anyone else but I also can’t kiss you? What am I–”
Buck kisses him, somewhat to shut him up cause he can’t live in a world Eddie doesn’t know that he wants to any more. Mostly because as he realizes now, it's what he had wanted to do so many times before.
Eddie lets out a breath beneath him and then kisses him back, dragging him in, wrapping his arms around his neck as Buck's hands land on his hips, his thumbs slipping between his waistband and shirt.
“I’m really sorry about the other night,” Buck is finally able to say between kisses as he closes the door behind him. “I am still dealing with a lot of things and I was just confused and you caught me off guard. But please don’t go. I–”
“I wasn’t gonna go the second I saw you pull up outside my door.”
“Eddie,” he practically whines in response. Eddie’s breath ghosting over his cheeks.
He finds himself trapped against the door, Eddie kissing along his jaw, his hand finding a home spreading across his waist, thumb resting on his last rib.
“I feel like we should talk more?” Buck asks. Eddie shakes his head,
“I have told you everything I need you to know, I think we have talked enough over the past five years. We have so much time.”
Buck smiles and they’re kissing again. It’s all syrupy and sweet, with a desperation to make up for what could be lost time. Or just catching up.
Eddie pulls him to the couch by his belt loops, with such little interruption that Buck barely notices his thighs bracketing Buck’s.
And oh, he thought he knew what this might be like, he’s done this a thousand times it seems. But it’s always been in cramped bathrooms or fire trucks, always somewhat awkward and tangled, quick and dirty.
This, with Eddie on the couch, their limbs slotting together like puzzle pieces, mouths opening, tongues dipping, hands–all singing in perfect harmony.
“Are we just gonna make out like teenagers until it’s time to go get Chris?” Buck asks at some point and Eddie buries his face in his chest, he can feel the smile that spreads across Eddie’s face.
“That’s a lot of making out, until three o’clock.”
“Five, he has Robotics Club today.”
“God it shouldn’t be sexy that you know that, fuck,” Eddie kisses him again. “We should move to the bed, and take a nap, shift was relentless.”
“Mmmm, what if we just take a nap right here?” Buck asks, Eddie nuzzling into his neck, little kisses just beneath his ear.
“We’re in our thirties Buck, that is not going to go well for either of our bodies,” Eddie grumbles. He tries to disentangle himself but is only met with a soft tightening grip.
“I just turned thirty–you are the old man here,” he replies teasingly, “Don’t worry I’ll take care of you.”
Eddie props himself up, hovering over Buck’s face, thumb gently resting between his eyebrow and birthmark.
The look on his face is soft, his mouth open as if to start speaking, but he just dips down and kisses the corner of Buck’s mouth gently and settles back down. Sighing as sleep wraps around them.

Eddie Diaz vs The Feelings
Buck/Eddie | rated: Explicit | 62K | complete
His dad smiles warmly. “It’s wonderful seeing you so happy and obviously in love. We always hoped you would find a man who would bring you happiness like this. I can’t tell you how many nights your mother prayed for you to finally allow yourself to fall in love. The kind of love we know you always wanted.”
The kind of love…
Obviously in love?
They hoped he would find a man? To be in love with? Love he has always wanted?
Eddie nearly drops his phone.
It slips a little. And he almost accidentally presses the End button. Then hastily scrambles to pick up and put everything right.
“I—” he starts but has nowhere to go. Or he has everywhere to go? “I’m… in love? You think— why? Why would you think that’s the reason I’m happy?”
“Eddie,” his dad chuckles and shakes his head. “You don’t need to hide it. You talk about this man you love all the time. Christopher talks about him all the time. You said he’s always been there for you.”
Someone Eddie talks about all the time. His partner who takes care of him. Who is also loved by Chris.
His dad even smirks at him. “You have this look anytime you mention him. Your mother says I used to look at her the same way, with nothing but hearts and stars in my eyes. Where you’re young and it’s new and you’re head over heels for each other and can’t think or talk about hardly anything else. You always sound… you sound happier than I think I’ve ever known you to be. You talk about him like you admire him, and sometimes like you’re amazed by how fiercely he loves you. And Christopher. It sounds like he’s very special.”
Of course he’s special. Of course he’s important. And incredible and amazing. He’s fun and funny and generous and so compassionate. He has the biggest, most beautiful heart.
And then all Eddie can think is, what if it’s not wrong?
What if he is in love with Buck?

Eddie dives into the mysteries of attraction, romantic love, and asexuality because there's a good chance he's fallen in love with his best friend.

"I didn't want to break up!"
Eddie stops where he's moving to leave, hand hovering on the doorknob of Buck's loft. He was going to walk out—going to walk out, and ask Bobby for a transfer, and quite possibly leave Buck’s life for good, because this—this fucking stalemate they’ve had between them since the breakup, it’s not working anymore. Eddie could pretend, at first, that things were fine; that they could go back to being friends after nearly six months of kissing and sex and dates and I love yous. He could pretend, at first, that he was slowly but surely getting over Buck. He could pretend, at first, that it didn’t kill him, to be by Buck’s side.
But it’s too much, now, to stand by and pretend that he isn’t still in love with Buck. Like he doesn’t still breathe for the man who broke his heart.
And Eddie—Eddie’s good at running, when it comes down to it. He ran from Shannon, he ran from his parents, he ran from the 118. He thinks it’s easier, somehow, to keep moving than to stay put; to put down new roots rather than watch the old ones rot away.
(He wanted to stay for Buck, is the thing. He wanted to stay forever, but Buck—well.)
“What?” Eddie says, fingers flexing into a fist at his side. He’s good at running, but this—Buck’s words—are gluing him to the floor. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
Buck drags a hand through his hair, tugging on it hard. If it was eight months ago—if Eddie was still allowed—he’d go over and take Buck’s hands, hold them tight in his.
It’s not eight months ago, though, and Eddie isn’t allowed.
Instead, Eddie leans against the closed door, crosses his arms over his chest, and waits.

love finds a way
posted on ao3 - 1628 - written for @diazreyes - who wanted soft buddie!
Summary:
It was a quiet day after a long shift, and Buck landed in Eddie’s home instead of his own loft afterwards, dead on his feet. After a much-needed shower and takeout, he found himself wrapped in a throw blanket that Abuela made for Eddie that he keeps on the couch, Eddie pressed against him, their legs intertwined after the man just dropped beside him, eyes already on the TV.
For twenty days and twenty nights, the emperor penguin will march to a place so extreme it supports no other life. In the harshest places on earth, love finds a way.
“Love finds a way,” Eddie mutters, so softly that Buck’s not even sure if he realizes that he’s doing it, but he’s turning to look at him anyway. What he finds is beautiful: Eddie’s brown eyes illuminated by the light coming from the television, reflecting the white and blue of the snow on the screen.

you talk of the pain like it’s all alright (but I know)
He finds Buck already in his - well, technically their- bed, curved into a ball, facing the window. “Okay Buck, what’s going on?” he goes straight to the point, sitting on the corner over to his side. Buck turns to face him, a bit surprised. “What do you mean?”
“You are not even playing Scrabble now? It’s like your favorite game!” Eddie points out. “You’ve been acting weird lately. Is something wrong?”
Buck averts his gaze, focusing on the pocket of his hoodie, where his hands remain hidden. Eddie’s hand slides on the gray sheet and stops on Buck’s shin, the one with all the scars. His fingers circle around it and Buck wonders if he can feel them over the thin fabric of his sweatpants; if he finds them repulsive.
or, Buck is quarantine-depressed and Eddie is searching for ways to help him feel better.

Whumptober Day 4 No. 4 DEAD ON YOUR FEET Hidden Injury | Waking Up Disoriented | Can’t Pass Out
"—hear me? Open your eyes."
He doesn't know where he is. There’s just a swirl of colour and a sickening pounding in his head but the voice is insistent.
"There you go." Eddie's face swims into view, pale and drawn. "That's good Buck, just stay awake for me."
"Wha—" the word trips on his tongue, too heavy in his mouth. "Eds?"
"The one and only."
There's a hand on his face and another in his hair and… another gripping his lungs like a vice.
"I don't—"
"Hey, no moving Buck. You know the drill."
He doesn't know where he is. The ground moves beneath him, rolling and shifting, until he's dizzy and sick from the movement.
"—gonna need a basket. He's not— shit—"
He blinks and he’s on his side, staring at the dirt as another wave of sickness rolls through him and out.
He doesn’t know where he is. There’s a hand on his shoulder and someone is murmuring soft reassurances.
“Gonna get you out in a few minutes, just stay awake for me.”
“Eddie?”
“Yeah, I’m right here.” The hand on Buck’s shoulder drifts up, skating feather-light across his skin to rest on his forehead. “You want me to roll you back over?”
“Don’t want to move,” Buck mumbles, closing his eyes at the touch. “Don’t wanna be sick again.” There’s another hand on his hip, holding him steady and even through his uniform Buck can feel the small circles traced by a thumb. “What happened?”
“You fell.”
“I don’t remember. How? I don’t—” He doesn’t know where he is.
“I think one of the shackles broke,” Eddie says, voice even, his hands still moving. “It wasn’t your fault.”
“Did anyone—” he trails off, his stomach clenching.
“Get hurt?” Eddie finishes for him. “No. You managed to push the patient up over the ledge before your rope gave.”
“Where—?” He doesn’t know where he is, and his head is pounding. “Eds, I don’t— I don’t feel—” Even with his eyes closed, his head is spinning.
There’s a fire burning in his chest. He can’t escape it. It’s going to burn him up.
“— awake, Buck. Please.”
He doesn’t know—
“— that basket, now!”
— where —
“— baby, come on—”
— he is.
---
He’s in the hospital.
He knows it before he even opens his eyes. The scent of antiseptic lingers in his nose and the rhythmic beep and click of the IV pump makes it pretty obvious.
“Hey.”
Buck shifts towards the voice.
“You awake this time?”
There’s a hand gripping his, rubbing circles into the skin of his wrist, and another hand cupping the side of his face.
“C’mon, it’s time to wake up.”
“Eddie?” Buck’s voice cracks on the name. His mouth and throat are so dry, his tongue like sandpaper. He tries again. “Eds?”
“Right here.”
Buck rolls his head towards the voice, squinting against the bright light of the room. His head hurts, his chest hurts. He has no memory of how he got here.
“What happened?”
“You fell.” Eddie grips Buck’s hand tightly in his. “But you’re okay now. Everything’s going to be okay.”

TO MAKE WITH THESE HANDS - By ChasetheWindTouchtheSky
ao3 link here!
Buck opens his mouth to explain, when Chris beats him to it. “Buck is making my dad his favorite mole with a recipe he got from my bisabuela. He’s being really weird about it.”
“Chris!” Buck cries because he doesn’t know what else to do with himself. Honestly, he thinks he’d rather take another repelling trip at this point.
The butcher clicks his tongue. “Wow, you worked your way into getting a family recipe? I still can’t convince my mother-in-law to give me her brisket rub and I’ve been married to my wife for eleven years. You must have really earned your place.”
“My Abuela doesn’t even have it.” Chris offers, like the traitor he is.
The butcher whistles. “I wouldn’t share that information at the next family reunion, you’ll be on the wrong side of a family feud.”
“I-It’s not like that, I—”
“Dad’s afraid to bring Buck to Texas because he doesn’t want to scare Buck away. He thinks my Tias will break him.” Buck stares. Chris shrugs. “I heard him talking on the phone to Pepa about it.”
“Well, we better help your Buck earn some points then, right? Walk over here and we’ll go over the basics of pork and how to find the best cuts. Ready to learn?”
Buck gapes between the butcher and Chris. “Yeah,” he manages weakly, in a way he can’t blame on the day. “Let’s learn about pork.”
OR: 5 Times Buck Makes Food for Someone He Loves + 1 Time Someone Makes Food for Him
OR OR: The Food Fic (affectionate)

@ronordmann Buddie 9-1-1 Reverse Prompt Challenge Round 3.
Fairy Tale AU
Rated M. Chapt 3/4 12.5 k
Read on AO3
Once upon a time, that’s how it starts isn’t it.
Once upon a time, it’s how his sister started all the stories she read to him when he was little; a prince, a princess, a wizard, challenges to overcome true love and a happily ever after.
Well he’s a prince and he’s been waiting for his happily ever after, he’s been waiting for it for a long time now. He thought he’d found it in brown eyes that turned gold and a warm smile that made him feel seen like no one else ever had, but that was lost. Turns out you don’t get a happily ever after when you’ve been cursed, not even if you're a prince.
Eddie was the seventh child of a seventh child and that means magic. He was born on a night with a new moon, when the sky was illuminated by the stars and the rainbow colours of raw magic. The magic glowed and wove a pattern into the inky blackness, high above the cottage where his mother laboured to bring him into the world.
He took his first breath and his parents felt the magic gather around him and settle into his skin, his eyes turned gold then settled back to brown.
He grew as children do and he was four when the second prince was born and he was eleven when the first prince died, leaving behind a sister, heir to the throne and a brother, the younger prince, the one with a curse in his blood.
Of course Eddie doesn’t know anything about that yet, he’s just a child, but he won’t be forever and one day he’ll learn what was done to his prince, the man who will become his friend, the man he’ll love and lose when even all his magic isn’t enough to break a curse.
His parents always said they hadn’t known what would happen. They’d gone to the fair folk with a sick child to ask for help. Their son and heir was dying and they needed a cure. All they did, they said, was ask for help, but there is always a price to pay for help from the fae.
A bargain was struck for a healthy child and the price agreed was something of equal value.
The queen hadn’t known, that’s what she said, again and again, she hadn’t known that there was already a life growing inside her, their third child.
The fae knew; it smiled before vanishing, sharp teeth flashing, eyes lingering on the queen’s stomach. That was when she understood what the price would be and she knew too that there was no purpose in becoming attached to something you’d already lost.
Nine moons passed and payment was due.
The creature that arrived to collect the fee was clearly not of this world, Its hair, midnight blue trailed down its back, skin the colour of moss glowed softly from within. There was no mistaking what they were or what they had come for. It was very beautiful, mesmerising and bewitching but in much the same way that a fire is beautiful and with the same risk.
The King and Queen accepted the inevitable and stood aside but his sister and the older prince said no, they stood together and tried to keep him safe, tried to keep him theirs.
The princess picked him up and held him close, lips pressed to his brow. Her love for him was new but already so strong. His brother stood before them both, young but brave and determined to keep the ones he loved safe, unsure what he could do but willing to try.
Their actions provoked laugher, bright and brittle it rattled round the hall. The fae found itself  amused by the futile gesture of the young ones before it and being capricious in nature it changed its mind on what it wanted and the ripples of that decision were sent into the world.
The children shivered as a melodious voice, laced with cruel, mocking humour rang out.
“Such courage, such  love, such a thing should have a reward so you may have him a while longer but you will remember the promise, who he really belongs to. When the moon is new you will not forget that he is already ours.”
So the children were given time and although it was not the intention they were also given a chance at changing his fate.
“25 years I think.” it said, amused, it could wait, 25 years after all was only a moment to the fae for whom time moved so differently but it was enough to cause trouble in the human world.
The princess and the oldest prince exchanged a glance, they were just children but they knew their brother had been given both a gift and a curse.
The beautiful face smiled but no glimmer of kindness could be found in it. The parting words left them cold.
“You love him now, think how much harder it will be to say goodbye then.”
The princess closed her eyes to hide her tears.
The king said nothing throughout it all, remaining silent on his throne, unable to look any of his children in the eye. He had made a bargain and although the price was high, the heir was worth it.
That was until the accident;because when the younger prince was just seven years old he lost his beloved brother anyway.
A fall from a horse; no magic, no curse. Just bad luck.
So in the end the kingdom was destined to lose both its princes anyway.
Except  there’s that one chance, a gift of time; time to find someone who could help.
*
Eddie’s been told many times that when you have magic you should do something with it, leave the world a little better than when you arrived in it.
He likes the sound of that so he chooses his focus, how to use his magic carefully and he chooses to heal, he finds people to teach him and he’s good at what he does. He travels and he tries to help, he sees life and love, death and pain.
One day he meets someone gifted like him but the magic in her blood is the gift of sight.
They spend a few years together and when she goes, she leaves him with two gifts: one is the most precious gift he ever receives, the other is a gift of words, a guide she says, to help find lost love. He worries that his love is destined to be lost before he’s even found it but he can hardly to change his fate.
The words are a riddle, that’s to be expected. Foresight is rarely clear, not until you're on the other side of it so really what’s the point?  He writes it down anyway because one day it might help him  find something important.

This is a Buddie fic rec list where "one of them isn't a firefighter" That makes me warm and happy every time I read them <3
Part 1 || Part 2
Spousal Secrets and Celebrity Crushes by AshwinMeird (@ashwinmeird) | 9k | General
Eddie joined the 118 and Hen learned plenty about his husband and son through endless stories, but she knew almost nothing about Buck. Then a movie being filmed not far from the station starts to become very relevant to her life. Or Five times Hen was confused about Eddie's husband and One time it all made sense
i'll walk through fire for you by prettyboybuckley (@greyacebuckley) | 3k | General
Eddie just shrugs, and they leave him alone, chattering about something he tunes out as he stares out the window. At least, until Bobby starts briefing them on what they're walking into.
He hears the address, and his stomach turns. That's where Buck lives.
"There was an explosion somewhere in the building," Bobby tells them over the comms. "Third floor is fully engulfed, the building is unstable, and there are people trapped up there, still. There's one other firehouse on the scene already."
OR: In a universe where Buck is not a firefighter but they're still best friends, Eddie gets called to a fire at Buck's apartment building
call you home by ashavahishta (@ashavahishta) | 6k | General
"He’s like, so pretty sometimes I can’t believe he’s real?” He’d rambled once, so tired at the end of shift he was basically drunk with it.
“I’ll take your word for it,” Hen had said patiently, and patted him on the shoulder. “I like girls, remember?”
“He’s built like a Greek god with the face of an angel,” Eddie had argued, a stubborn set to his mouth like he was determined for Hen to believe just how gorgeous his husband was. “Even you couldn’t resist that.”
Or: "Eddie Diaz drinks his 'I fucking love my husband' juice for 6,000 words." OR "5 Times Eddie Told The Firefam About Buck and 1 Time They Actually Met Him".
we're not in love (but the sex is good) by elless | 15k | Explicit
Eddie is new to LA. Feeling lonely, he goes to a bar for a drink and meets a beautiful stranger that kisses like a dream. What starts as a one night stand quickly moves to frequent no strings sex. When circumstances lead to them spending time together out of bed, Eddie realizes he’s attached to Buck in a way he never planned for.
the handyman can ('cause he fixes it with love) by iphigenias (@oatflatwhite) | 4k | Teen
Eddie’s first thought when he opens the door is that Hen’s finally getting payback for Eddie hustling her in pool last Friday. The guy standing on the stoop is sweaty, smiling, with biceps that look like they could jaws-of-life a car all on their own and a very pink, very biteable kiss of a birthmark above his crinkled blue eyes. His toolbelt looks like every toolbelt from every bad porn movie ever, slung absurdly low on his hips, and the acid-wash jean shorts he’s wearing absolutely cannot be OSHA-approved.
Eddie decidedly does not look at the thick muscle of the guy’s thighs when he says, “uh, I think you have the wrong house.”
we can’t fight gravity (love is like falling) by alasse (@alasse9) | 21k | Teen
Eddie is an actor (a former child star of a major franchise who only does weird indie movies nowadays), and Buck is still a firefighter. The universe screams at them a few times—through a tsunami, an unfortunate misunderstanding, and an emergency at a movie set—until they finally get it together.
Close My Eyes and Stumble (Right Into Your Love) by HMSLusitania (@hmslusitania) | 21k | Mature
Eddie's PTSD is just that little bit worse and when he moves to Los Angeles, instead of joining the LAFD, he joins dispatch.
Which is all good and fine, except for this one firefighter he keeps ending up talking to.
(is in the back of my mind and on the tip of my tongue) by waferkya (@oursisthewinter) | 17k | Teen
Soft, dark hair, just long enough to begin curling at the tips; expressive eyebrows and an impossibly straight nose that should belong on some Greek statue, full pink lips stretched in a wide smile just this side of goofy, and a wonderful amount of stubble dusting his jaw; broad shoulders hugged to perfection by the dark blue police uniform, his entire body a stretch of tight muscle. Yeah, yup, yes. Chim is not wrong. The man is handsome as sin. Also, he’s a cop, which—hi, hello, that’s hot.
[AU in which Eddie is a cop who just moved to LA; Buck has zero self-esteem, a praise kink the size of the desert and no clue on how to pick a decent Dom; and eventually love conquers all.]
Write me into your happy ending... by ReallySmartLadyMarieCurie | 16k | Teen
Four years ago when Eddie and Christopher started reading the book series about Daniel's Adventures together before bedtime, Eddie never would have guessed that he would run into the author of said book series in the middle of a Barnes & Noble in LA. He also wouldn't have guessed that said encounter would begin with him sternly lecturing the stranger and making a slight fool of himself. Nor would he have predicted that this terrible first impression would somehow make the published author want to give his phone number to Eddie.
Or, Eddie the firefighter and Buck the writer have a meet-cute, and things progress from there.
i wanna be known (by you) by chasingoblivion (@starlightbuck) | 12k | General
“I didn’t mean to do it.” Hen glances down at Eddie’s phone then back up at him in disbelief. “How do you ‘not mean’ to download a bunch of dating apps but still have them on your phone?” Or  In which Eddie delves into the intimidating world of online dating.
String of hearts... by ReallySmartLadyMarieCurie | 11k | Teen
“Now. Eddie is this incredible presence. He’s funny and smoking hot, and he has a son who sounds wonderful. And he’s serious and vulnerable at times. But so enjoyable to be around, every single second that he’s there. And how can I put myself out there when the expectation is so high? When the thing I might lose is so beautiful?”
In which Buck owns a plant shop in LA, and Eddie becomes his new favorite customer. Pining ensues.
Confirmation Bias by strifechaos | 31k | Mature
After the fallout with his ex-wife, Eddie believed he could only trust his family with his son. He hadn’t imagined falling for his son’s sweet-hearted nanny, Buck.
With his own family so distant, Buck never considered that he’d be lucky enough to find a home for himself, let alone people he could count on. Not until he meets the Diaz boys.
AU: Buck was never a firefighter, and becomes Christopher's sitter when Shannon's job takes her away from Eddie and Chris for the summer. Eddie tries to not fall for his son's nanny, he's not very successful.
serendipity (can't get him off my mind) by elless | 7k | Teen
Buck has his job at the daycare, his sister, and good friends. And not much else. His life hasn't turned out how he expected. Then he gets a wrong number text that changes everything. He and Eddie click instantly, but Eddie lives in Texas while Buck is in LA. It can never work, especially if Buck is too afraid to make a move.
Buckley's Bouquets by awashleyno | 23k | Teen
A world where Buck owns a flower shop and manages to develop a huge, massive, ridiculous crush on a handsome firefighter that comes in for a visit one day.
Or, 5 times Eddie gives flowers to other people and the 1 time he gives them to Buck.
the meaning of the words you see by florenceandthemachine (@florenceandthemachine) | 8k | Explicit
unknown sender: Hi! unknown sender: Just wanted to say thanks for letting me buy you a drink, and for your number. Sorry I had to run. unknown sender: I’m Eddie by the way. sent: hey um sent: i don’t want 2 be this guy but sent: i think u mayb put the wrong # in ur phone
Frequent Flyer by red_to_black (@redtooblack) | 13k | Mature
In his entire time being a firefighter, Eddie has never met anyone as accident-prone as Evan Buckley. And Buck - well, he's quickly becoming the 118's best customer.
(Or - the one where Eddie is a firefighter, Buck isn't, and Eddie finds himself rescuing Buck from increasingly sticky situations. Sometimes literally.)
i'm gonna make this place your home by chromatophorica (@chromatophorica) | 11k | Teen
"Hey, did you know that other people can go to the kids' islands on that game?" He asks Hen the following day at work, stocking up the ambulance with her while Chim teaches the probie how to roll hoses.
"Yeah, I mean, they go to each other's all the time." Which, yeah, in a way, Eddie knew that part
"No, I mean other people, like people on the internet or whatever." Hen shoots him a look, one that states he's showing his usual technophobic ways again. “I'm just saying, some person that Chris called 'Buck' was on his island just like... giving him things.” It feels a lot like those stories about grooming or whatever, when the internet was new and people pretended to be something they weren't. What if this Buck person was an old guy in a creepy basement trying to befriend kids on a game? --- During the pandemic, Christopher gets more involved in online gaming. Eddie promptly freaks out when he realises his son has made a friend through the games. It takes Chimney's girlfriend and a car crash to understand how important that friend will be.

BRAND NEW SOUNDS IN MY MIND [1.3k | feelings realization | first kiss] {ao3}
a/n: this is for @alex1424 who i said i would write a nick x jess inspired first kiss for like 9 months ago, and here we are finally lol. i hope it was worth the wait. also special shout out to @bumble-of-the-bee for beta reading and helping me find a title, which is from green light by lorde because i had to do that for this one. anyway, enjoy!
Buck never thought he would be here. He's cradling Eddie’s jaw, the other man’s hands carefully perched on his hips. mere inches from making everything make sense. it felt like they were on the edge of the universe.
The thing is, Buck hadn’t known he wanted this until it was happening.
The second thing is, if he had imagined it, dreamed it, he doesn’t think that the entirety of his family would be on the other side of the door.
But if that’s how it’s going to go. If this is the chance he has to taste a future he cannot hold on to, he’ll take it.
They're trapped in a warm bubble, just the two of them, the drowned out chants of wine drunk Karen and one too many shots of tequila Albert barely on their radar. Karen and Albert are out there, along with Claire. And he’s in here on the cusp of something with someone else. He’s been here before. But it doesn’t feel the same at all. And Eddie has James. James who is sweet and loving, on the brink of meeting Christopher, and who Eddie adores. And he has Claire. He can’t do this. Not again, he would never be able to forgive himself. But the churning in his stomach is starting to feel more like butterflies. Because this isn’t something he had fully known he had wanted. For years.
“It can’t. I- Not like this Eddie. Not like this.”
And the warmth is gone in an instant. Eddie freezes and looking at Buck like he’s betrayed him. And he can’t be here anymore.
“Guys, please, let us out. We-”
“You have to kiss!” Albert replies giggly, “Did you kiss?”
“No, okay, we didn't. But let us out, for the love of god, please let me out of here.” He didn’t mean to sound so desperate.
And he can feel how Eddie is looking at him without even turning back, the pleading in his voice stringing the tension tight.
He nearly falls out of the room as the door swings open.
And Eddie somehow pushes past him, face stoic and cold.
And hurt.
There’s hurt written all over the inch that Buck dares to look at without catching Eddie’s eyes.
“Baby what’s wrong? Is everything okay?” he hears in the distance, when the fuck did James get here?
“Everything’s fine, just ready to go to your place.”
Buck might puke right there. He never realized how much he hates this. Or why he hates it.
Claire stands in front of him as he stares after Eddie’s retreating figure.
He hates truth or dare. He should have just picked truth. Dares were stupid anyway, and it had ended with Eddie being hurt. That wasn’t supposed to happen either.
He can’t sleep.
He breaks up with Claire the next morning.
He’s gentle about it. And he’s honest.
They understand.
He’s over at Eddie’s because it’s Friday night. And that’s what they do. And Christopher is old enough now where half truths and broken promises are seen through.
They barely look at each other the entire night.
Somewhere between Chris making his way to bed and two beers and half a movie, Eddie says,
“I broke up with him. With James.”
Buck just hums.
He should've said more. But he would probably sound like the worst person on the entire planet if he did.
The credits rolled some time ago, and Buck changes into his sweatpants from his work bag and Eddie changes in his bedroom. They almost bump into each other in the hallway. It’s the closest they've been since that night.
It’s excruciating.
Because of that warmth. The warm bubble is back. And there is no more James. And there is no more Claire. And there are no more drunk family members chanting outside the door. Just their son sleeping soundly behind a closed door down the hall.
“What did you mean?” Eddie asks, “Not like what?” it's fragile, like glass, just sharp enough that it could have popped the bubble, but it doesn't.
“Not while- You seemed happy with him,” he replies softly, trying not to let the hurt paint the words too much.
“Oh,” Eddie keeps moving toward his room. And Buck can’t do it again. Can’t watch him go through another door. And he lets the butterflies flutter. And then they settle and he has never felt more sure of anything in that moment. And he grabs Eddie’s arm, spins him around, and kisses him.
Right there in the hallway.
Eddie makes a small noise in surprise and then starts kissing him back.
It’s warm, and feels like home, filled with years of unknown and unspoken want and hurt. It’s slow like molasses and over all too soon.
“I meant like that.” Buck says softly over heavy breath.
He then turns slowly and retreats back to the couch. Too scared to look back at Eddie, he doesn’t know what he would find if he did.
He doesn't sleep again.
“I kissed him, Maddie! What the hell am I supposed to do now? I snuck out of the house this morning. We were supposed to go to the Zoo! Oh god, I broke a promise to Christopher. Oh god.”
Maddie laughs over her cup of coffee.
“Do not laugh at my pain,” he glares at her playfully.
“I think you have to tell him. I really think you do,” she replies, schooling her features.
Buck just plants his face on the table and groans a little bit. He knows she's right. That's what older sisters are for.
“Now, go home, take a shower, dress up nice and go tell him you’ve been in love with him for years.”
“Ugh, fine.” he downs the last few sips of his coffee and heads out the door.
He’s staring at his closet. None of it seems right.
“I feel ridiculous, Maddie. All my clothes are terrible. I think I need a whole new wardrobe.”
“That’s how you know, remember how much I blathered on about my outfit before I went on my first date with Howie?” Her voice coming through the tinny speaker from his phone laying on his bed.
“Which time?”
“All of them Evan,” he can hear her eye roll “That's how you know. You ‘ll find something. Oooh what about that blue one that brings out your eyes? And those black jeans?”
“Maddie, you are a genius!”
“Yes I know, now go get him.”
“Love you!”
He hangs up the phone and gets dressed, styles his hair with a tiny amount of gel, leaving his curls mostly loose and soft.
He’s anxiously twirling his keys around his thumb in the elevator. It stops on the third floor and some movers with a large stack of boxes board the car. And everything moves so slow he almost bolts out of there to take the stairs just to escape the excruciating wait.
Finally the doors clang shut and it starts moving again.
And the process starts all over again when they reach the lobby.
He hears someone sigh, and he swears it sounds like Eddie. He finds it slightly ridiculous that he could identify his best friend that way, but that’s just how it is.
He shakes the thought from his head, but then the person speaks,
“Would you mind speeding up a little, I have to go tell my best friend that I’m in love with him.”
It’s definitely Eddie.
The mover finally fully exits the elevator and Buck looks up from where he’s been studying his white sneakers like they weren’t something he’s owned for a few years.
They stare at each other for a moment, smiles spreading slowly. And the doors start to close.
But Eddie slips in just in time.
“Hi,” he says, circling his fingers around one of Buck’s wrist.
“Hi,” is all he can muster in return, it’s weak and whispered but still full of reverence.
“I’m in love with you too by the way,” Buck is finally able to whisper.
“Good,” is all Eddie replies, cradling Buck’s jaw and pressing him into the elevator wall.

“Marry me.” from the prompts 💕
send me a prompt for buddie!
you're walking away with my heart and soul
1,782 words | buddie | read on ao3
Eddie wants to make it clear—abundantly, viscerally clear—that he actually hates hiking.
It’s not the exercise part. Eddie likes exercise, honestly, he does, he just prefers it to be—kickboxing, or running, or the occasional yoga class that Karen and Maddie introduced him to that he secretly loves. But hiking? God, there are bugs and there’s uneven ground, and don’t even fucking mention the way he’s prone to nose bleeds the higher the elevation is. He lives at sea level, now. He isn’t built for going above 200 meters.
Anyway, his point is—and he has a point, thank you very much—is that he hates hiking. Truly, utterly despises it.
Buck, though? Buck loves it. During the pandemic, when he so graciously opened up his loft for Eddie, Chim, and Hen, things got tense often enough that the four of them decided they needed to find safe, quarantine-friendly activities to do alone, if only for some time apart. Hen started baking, trying to nail Karen’s favorite tiramisu recipe; Chimney learned sign language after reading an article about brain development in babies; Eddie started an herb garden on Buck’s balcony; and Buck—Buck decided that just being in the loft was too much, sometimes, so he took to hiking.
Runyon Canyon, Mount Baldy, Switzer Falls—if it’s ever been featured on a Best Hikes in LA County list, Buck’s been on it. He called it meditative, once; like when he’s out in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but his backpack and a water bottle, he can be someone else. He can be no one, just for a few hours.
It helps me decompress, Buck had said as he rolled out of their bed way too early on a Sunday morning.
Eddie had just groaned into his pillow in response.
Usually, Buck hikes alone. Sometimes Chimney will go with him because they think it’s funny to race each other to the top of Mount Baldy, and once, Buck and Christopher went on a short hike around Griffith Observatory, but most of the time, Buck is by himself.
Except for today, apparently, because when Eddie padded into the kitchen this morning in search of coffee, Buck had been waiting at the table, thumbing through his phone. He’d brightened when he saw that Eddie was awake, was already dressed in his normal hiking clothes—the khaki stretch pants that made his ass look great and a moisture-wicking long sleeve that Eddie had a certain fondness for—and said Wanna come out with me today?
And normally, Eddie would say no, because Chris is away at summer camp, and it’s Sunday, and his plans involved getting a late lunch with Karen, watching the baseball game later, and napping on the couch like the thirty-four-year-old he is. He wasn’t planning on sweating in 98° heat with his boyfriend as they climb 900 feet and got blisters in places no one should get blisters.
But the thing is, Buck never asks, not for this, and Eddie is—well, he’s never really been able to say no to Buck, anyway.

blackbirds, silence, and early morning orgasms by @queerasdiaz
Summary: The calm. The serene. The birds outside of the window, and the early morning sunlight streaming in through the blinds - the way Eddie can feel it in every single touch, and every kiss - this is where he's meant to be. This is where they are meant to be. They're happy. They're safe. They made it.

Summary : It’s such a long time coming and still it takes Buck by surprise. It takes him by surprise even though he is the one that leans in and finally kisses Eddie. His second surprise is that Eddie doesn’t push him away, doesn’t even look at him with confusion. Or worse, rage. No, Eddie kisses him back like Buck is a tall drink of water and Eddie is severely dehydrated. Buck knows the feeling.
short, shallow gasps by @gayboyeddie
Summary : Eddie would like to state, for the record, that he has never cried during sex before. It’s just — Buck does something to him.
you've got a friend in me by @likeshipsonthesea
Summary : Buck frowns. “What’s wrong?”Eddie shifts his weight from one foot to the other, then winces.“Eddie. Are you okay, are you hurt—” Buck steps closer, hands raised to assess Eddie for injury, but Eddie jerks back. Buck stops. “Eddie?”“I did something stupid.” Eddie’s voice sounds rough, like it does first thing in the morning. His cheeks are somehow even more flushed than they were when he first stepped out. Buck can feel the discomfort radiating from him and he just—wants to make it better.Buck tries for levity. “Like, tried-to-cook-and-almost-burned-the-kitchen-down stupid or someone-cut-me-off-on-the-freeway-and-now-I-need-help-burying-a-body stupid?”Eddie huffs. “More tried-getting-off-for-the-first-time-in-months-and-got-a-vibrator-stuck-up-my-ass stupid.” Buck takes a second while his brain goes completely blank.
