Reminder of a Starline themed BumbleKast Q&A where Ian Flynn as Starline talks about what he would have done with Sonic and Tails bodies after the events of Issue 50: [ Tw! Child Death + Taxidermy ]

Starline is such a genuinely terrifying character (who I miss everyday ahh) and his disregard for children and his willingness to mentally and physically manipulate them for his own evil purposes (especially in the context of this answer) is genuinely chilling. It’s something I think even Eggman would be semi disturbed by which is saying a lot.

The idea of him using Sonic and Tails preserved bodies as trophies and as an example to others is so insanely horrifying, and the “well then I’ll just have to start a gallery won’t I!” in response to the idea of other hero’s trying to rise up against him somehow finds a way to make it extra disturbing. The mental image of Amy, Knuckles and all their other friends seeing what Starline has done to the brothers… to their family 💔

The thought of Surge and Kit having a constant physical reminder of what they’ve done… that while Sonic and Tails may be out the way, the two unwilling doppelgangers will forever be in their shadow, unable to truly fill the roles they were forced into and the bond the brothers had. Them getting everything they thought they wanted, yet still feeling empty inside.

Long story short: Ian Flynn did not need to go this crazy with this answer but gosh am I glad he did.

In issue 36 it’s shown that Mobian hedgehogs can wag their tails, as shown with Amy. So how would Sonic, Silver, or Shadow react if someone caught them with their tails wagging?

IAN FLYNN: [Laughing] Sonic wouldn't care. He's chill about it. Silver would be extremely self-conscious and kind of blubber over himself, like, "I-I-I didn't! I wouldn't -- I can't -- I didn't!" [Misspeaking] Silver would kill you. I- Shadow! Shadow. Shadow. I screwed up the joke. KYLE CROUSE: [Cackling laughter] "Silver would kill you." It's funnier that way! IAN: Well, maybe they both would, you know? Shadow's just more direct about it. KYLE: Yeah, yeah, yeah... IAN: "Shadow, I saw your tail wagging." [Shadow voice, threatening] "No you didn't." KYLE: [as Shadow] "You saw nothing." IAN: "Silver, I saw your tail wagging." [Silver voice, panicked] "NO YOU DIDN'T!" [normal voice] and then he smashes you with a car. KYLE: [Laughing] Just on accident. IAN: Yeah, just as more of a reflex. KYLE: Just as a reflex-reaction, yeah. [Silver voice] "IT'S NO USE -- CRAP!"

During the bumblekast livestream over the weekend someone (basically) asked what a little brother to Tangle would be like. Ian couldn't decide if he liked a more soft-spoken fearful boy or a more bratty but adventurous type better for her to play off of.

But Tangle's a tough gal, so I'm saying she has both. Just something about Tangle being the big sister to twin brothers is really charming to me.

KYLE CROUSE: Here's one from Nenemyun! "Uh oh, Ian. SEGA's asked for a special romcom Valentine's issue called "Everybody Loves Shadow!" Sonic, Amy, Knuckles, Blaze and Metal Sonic are all fighting for Shadow's affection and its up to YOU to bring some sense to this awful premise! So how would each of our cast members try to rizz up the ultimate lifeform? What would be Shadow's reaction to the strange amount of attention he's suddenly getting from them?"

IAN FLYNN: I think it would be funniest if Shadow is exiting each encounter thinking he's coming into a regular relationship, and then it's almost like a horror movie surprise that no, they're actually interested in him, and he reacts to that. KYLE: [laughs] IAN: So you start off, y'know, gently enough with Amy being open in her affections, and Shadow's like, [Shadow voice] "Is the sun in your eyes again? Do you think I'm Sonic?" and she's like, "No, no, no! It's you! It's totally you! It's always been you." And he's like, [Shadow voice] "No! Ew! Weird!" and he runs off. KYLE: [chuckles] IAN: Y'know, gets sidelined by Metal Sonic. [Shadow voice] "Oh, the Doctor sent you to kill me!" Until it goes on down on one knee and grabs his hand, like... [Shadow voice] "Ew! No! Weird!" and he runs off. KYLE: [wheezing laughter] IAN: He gets up to Angel Island just to get some distance. He needs some time alone, and there's Knuckles, and he's like, [Shadow voice] "Don't worry, I'll leave your island in just a minute." [Knuckles voice] "No, it's okay... you can stay." [Shadow voice] "Ew, no! Weird!" And he's running off again. KYLE: [laughs] IAN: Manages to beam himself straight over to Blaze's dimension to get away from it all. She's very happy to see him over here. They don't get too many visitors. He can, uh, stay as long as he wants. [Shadow voice] "Ew, no! Weird!" And he goes right back to Sonic's world! KYLE: [laughing] It's all so weird! Everybody's acting so weird! IAN: He's on the run, and Sonic comes in line with him, he's like, [Shadow voice] "Don't you even start with me!" [Sonic voice] "Dude, relax! We're just going for a run! Why are you always on edge?!" [Shadow voice] "I've had the weirdest day!" And they go running around, and y'know, fighting robots. It's completely casual and platonic, and he's finally relaxed about it all, and Sonic goes, "I'm glad you've had this time to just... chill out. It's been a good date." [Shadow voice] "I beg your pardon?!" KYLE: [wheezing laughter] Oh no! Where's he gonna go next? Does he launch himself into space? IAN: He finds his way back into the ARK and just seals the capsule again. KYLE: Yeah! [laughing] I was gonna say, he just launches himself back into space, onto the ARK! Like, [Shadow voice] "Oh god... I don't wanna be here anymore." [laughs] Oh, boy.

In honour of Tails birthday (and the fact I’ve hardy been online cause life has been crazy) thought I’d use the little brain cells I’ve got atm to ramble about this Bumblekast clip that I find really interesting!

I find the concept of Tails having an inner conflict with himself and in Ian’s words being “his own worst enemy” regarding his birthday super interesting… and also pretty sad.

The way Tails views his own age (and the way other characters treat him regarding it) has always been one of my favourite aspects of his character. So much of his self-worth stems from his status as a prodigy and the ways in which he associates others viewing him as mature and dependable as a result of it. Between the burden of his own intelligence, his first few years being an orphan (or having seemingly absent parents) + dealing with bullying on Westside Island and then meeting Sonic and becoming a child hero…

Tails hasn’t ever really had the chance to be a child

I think what really gets me about this clip is Ian stating deep down maybe Tails really would want that typical kid birthday like Cream, but he’s ashamed of letting himself act like a child or be viewed as one by others <\3

I really hope this inner conflict is explored more in the future, both within canon content and the fandom cause it’s always super interesting to see explored! Especially given it being another aspect of Tails character I’m sure many given their upbringing may find relatable and connect with.

So Happy Birthday to Tails and may he have the best of birthdays with a big mint chocolate cake, party hats, streamers and any other childish things him as a child should be able to enjoy! 🎊
