Okay okay
Here's a question you probably can answer lol
What songs are the gang listening to on repeat in your modern au :)
ksxjsodkwkkd i have had a post abt their music tastes sitting in my drafts for months so i will just share that!! my own music is kind of limited bc i just listen to the same stuff over & over (bc neurodivergent™️) so!! my apolocheese for this not being as super in depth for some of the gang vs others. i am also open to suggestions ;_; a couple of these were from me talking with a pal, mainly astrid & fishlegs (@despiteherself hiiiii!!!!)
hiccup: lots of indie stuff, leaning more towards indie folk!! he likes anything rlly with strings involved. he's a dragonboy horsegirl at heart & wants to imagine riding through the air with winds blowing through his hair & wistfully wishing he could have a different life. he does listen to indie pop, too. he liked glass animals before they were popular & wants everyone to know it. also loves woodkid.
astrid: she has 5 songs she listens to & they were just songs ppl recommended to her. she only goes out of her way to listen to music if she's at the gym & doesn't want to talk to anyone (if snotlout is there it does not work </3) tuffnut told her "you should listen to mac miller" & she picked a single song & just made it a song she listens to. every single other song she's ever heard is inflicted upon her when she's in the car, at work, etc & her friends have their stuff. she's content with that
fishlegs: everything & anything u could possibly think of. it's all put together on one giant playlist. u will hear 1940s jazz followed by georgian chants followed by sam smith followed by power metal followed by edm & it just keeps going. knows the words to every song he ever hears. any genre, any language!! collects vinyl, tapes, cds, YOU NAME IT!!! very passionate abt music!!!!!!
snotlout: 2000s & 2010s pop & edm, duchess by fergie is one of his fave albums ever. loves lady gaga. everything else is dad rock. 80s thrash metal, nu metal, & 90s grunge, mostly. he wants to be cool so so bad, he wants to be a rockstar. learns to play guitar & is annoying abt it (can shred p well tho). is the reason everyone in the friend group has at least ONE slipknot song on their individual playlists
ruffnut: grunge, hip hop, rap, & house music. lots of in this moment & garbage. big kendrick lamar fan. lots of late 80s to early 00s for rap & hip hop. she likes to groove & vibe, occasionally headbang. i think she'd love mary j blige too. i think she, outside of everything listed, has a soft spot for p!nk & listens to her when she's having a hard time (her & snotlout sometimes listen together). i think she'd also enjoy billie holiday on a quiet day & no one is around. (she is not embarrassed by it ay all, she just likes having things for herself)
tuffnut: grunge, 70s soft rock, hip hop, & rap!!! lots of overlap with ruff but obv there's also a lot of differences!! the 70s soft rock is the main outlier. he enjoys cruising around & being wistful as he listens to america, doobie brothers, seals & croft, etc. he puts pop country on his playlists as a joke but it ends up stuck in everyone's heads & smth they all jam to to have fun.
there is a massive group playlist (fishlegs is the one who puts it together but will add a song if suggested) & it is a cacophony of so much shit. they all have their tastes but by the time they're adults they all know each other's songs & sing/jam along & have a fucking blast, esp in the car or at the sanctuary. the playlist is always on shuffle & there is the chance for a rickroll. always
songs that tend to get repeated by the group are psychosocial (slipknot), custer (slipknot), anything by pitbull, fire water burn (bloodhound gang), bbc (jaboukie), anything by woodkid, somebody i used to know (gotye), & anything by they might be giants & other assorted meme songs they love torturing each other with. (they are the most obnoxious group alive)

What music would the straw hats listen to?
Luffy: he would probably vibe to anything, and whenever you show him a song he just goes "so cool" and listens to it with u. if he doesn't like the song he'd be brutally honest tho he'd go "ew" and change it. other than that though he likes songs he can sing along to
Zoro: his music taste is a mystery to everyone. no one's ever caught him listening to anything or even enjoying brook's music. (even though he does enjoy it!!but silently.) he probably likes hip hop though, something with a good beat a nice flow. he sneaks in some pop songs in secret though. BUT NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW. also perona and mihawk got him into gothic music, although he acts like he just TOLERATES it.
Nami: she has a broad taste i think but she has a soft spot for pop/cheerful songs. maybe some 90s edm. she likes putting on some ambient music for when she's working on her maps. she occasionally puts on some melancholic love songs and thinks about vivi.
Usopp: he likes folk music a lot, he likes the simplicity of it and he appreciates a beautiful voice! he tries writing his own songs too and if you catch him doing that he'll get all embarrassed and deny everything.
Sanji: he only listens to love songs.
Chopper: He likes anything cute! He listens to jpop and bubblegum pop but he doesn't like songs with too much drum and bass. he also likes musicals and kid songs.
Robin: she LOVES visual kei. She doesn't just love the music but the presentation too. She likes anything gothic and even dresses up in that aesthetic when she feels like it.
Franky: he likes country music. and dad rock. duh.
Brook: Soul! He's the soul king after all. He also loves rock and roll and he'll honestly play anything the others ask him to.
Jimbei: He likes Japanese traditional music. His favorite instruments are the flute and the shamisen. He can probably play them too but he doesn't really tell anyone.

Piers Headcanons | Music
Because I’ve been thinking about him a lot lately, lemme just lay some stuff down to share:
he’s a vocalist, first and foremost
he composes all his music, so of course he plays instruments too
he plays a whole range of instruments and he’s not gonna stop trying to learn how to play more
he probably collects instruments, but i honestly don’t know if he has the money and space for that since Spikemuth looks poor af and i think he doesn’t charge entry for his concerts there
but i’ll assume that he does anyways as long as he and Marnie are decently fed lol
recording equipment too
he definitely plays guitar, bass, keyboard. probably even a keytar
for drums, i think he also knows how to play, but i think he’s more likely to use drum pads or an electric set since he goes straight to recording his stuff when he’s on it
he records lotsa random ideas and gets a few really good ones polished enough
he’s always in his head with ideas and feelings so literally anything in the moment could end up becoming a song
seriously, dude’s just a one-man music machine and nothing can stop him
i swear, even artist blocks can become music
he’s just that musically expressive even though he looks like a tired grump who just wants to sleep and never wake up
speaking of sleep, he probably gets a lot of wild ideas from his dreams
so he just starts recording or writing down lyrics the moment he wakes up
i personally don’t think he’s formally trained, but he takes music so seriously that he figured everything out well enough on his own
he’s a pretty disciplined guy, ngl
things have to be perfect when it comes to his music
he has standards he has to uphold as a self-made artist
but he definitely isn’t a stickler or killjoy
for one, he does not discriminate any genres
obviously, he’s all about punk and hardcore genres
he’s all down for starting mosh pits and screaming his lungs out onstage
but he doesn’t think any less of “softer” genres
pop? cool. jazz? alright. opera? nice. rap? not his forte, but why not. country? sure, especially if it’s something he can do for acoustic nights. edm? sucks that he can’t sing here, but it gets the crowd going so he’s okay with that.
he loves and respects all genres equally, and will definitely participate in an intelligent conversation about any type of music, despite his clear preferences
just don’t be a rude genre-elitist jerk, and you’ll be good with this guy
dude’s actually pretty chill and is open to changing preferences and opinions
he makes his own music most of the time, but he occasionally covers other artists too, if the mood’s right for it
he values expression as the art itself
he loves music because of all the feelings, emotion, and passion it can convey and evoke
he loves expression because he’s a shy boy otherwise
he knows his own flaws, and that’s what makes him so strong
that’s why he pursued music as his passion because it’s life-changing to him
and it never ceases to fill him with awe every time he experiences something new with music
he loves the fact that his musical journey would be an endless one that’s full of surprises and knows no limits
music is his best friend
music is his life
he will always have some form of music with him, always, til his very last breath
he will not hesitate to put it aside for his responsibilities, though
for example, he took on becoming the Gym Leader and didn’t really pressure Marnie too much about taking the role from him, since he loves her and he also wants her to pursue her own ambitions first
he is a good brother and a good Gym Leader because of this, and it’s kinda sad that he fails to see this sometimes
but hey things got sorted out by the end of the game’s story, so yay!
I really wish he charges better for his concerts ugh he deserves the money
also he’s definitely gonna be using the money and exposure to breathe life back into Spikemuth so he really really deserves the money lol
once that’s done, do free gigs and benefit concerts as much as you want, bruv!
I’d love to hear your opinion on Piers, dear reader! Agree? Disagree? Tell me why 😁

What Subjects I Think LOK Characters Would Teach:
Lin: PE, obviously. Dating Kya and all the kids are happy cause there’s a noticeable shift in Lin’s mood once they start dating. She no longer forces kids to run a mile every day and instead does it once a week now, so the kids are hoping her and Kya stay together. She also coaches Golf and Lacrosse.
Kya: Waffled between MILF Math teacher, MILF Science teacher, and hippy/chill Music teacher, but decided on MILF Science Teacher. Getting strong Biology vibes. Very fun labs and not strict at all. Her and Zhu-Li are super passionate about leading the Science Bowl team. Seeing these young people be so passionate about STEM and helping their fellow teammates makes her hopeful for this young generation.
Tenzin: He kinda gives math teacher vibes, but a large part of his character in the show is about him keeping his history alive, and teaching others abut learning and respecting history, so I feel like he’s a History teacher. His class is a lot of notetaking but he plays quiet music and does a five minute meditation in the middle of class to encourage kids to relax, so students really like him and actually listen to him. Also, he’s kind of gullible so they make up fake trends to tell him. He once spent a week addressing people as “brony” cause students told him thats what people say now instead of bro. Kids got a good laugh out of that one. Him and Pema are another favorite teacher couple.
Bumi II: Def gives off eccentric/unhinged English teacher vibes. Very interesting and informative conversations in his class, but things get off topic very quickly. Whenever kids ask about Bum-Ju, he gets distracted and will talk the entire rest of the period about what to dress Bum-Ju up as for Halloween. Probably plays a lot of videos. And students don’t worry about if they read the books Bumi II assigns cause they don’t think he’s even read the books he assigns. When having discussions about the books in class, sometimes kids will make up stuff and say it’s in the book and for the most part, Bumi II goes along with it cause he doesn’t know what actually happens in the books.
Varrick: Also gives off eccentric/unhinged English teacher vibes, but because he’s a businessman/war profiteer, I’m gonna have to say he teaches Econ and gives students lots of unsolicited financial advice. Also supervises the Engineering and Robotics Club.
Zhu-Li: Science teacher, probably Chemistry. She’s very good at explaining and getting kids to follow her instructions. Not only is she a co-supervisor for the Science Bowl team, she helps Varrick run Engineering and Robotics Club, cause if it were only Varrick running it, no kids would come. His intensity and eccentricity scares them.
Iroh II: He’s definitely the young Math teacher everyone has a crush on. Very chill and doesn’t give a lot of homework. Kids love when he shows pictures of his dog to the class and eventually he brings in the dog cause admin think the dog is too cute to say no to.
Tonraq: Resident DILF History teacher. Kind of a hardass but also a nice dude so most everyone passes his class. Probably that History teacher that is also a football coach, so during fall he doesn’t give a FUCK about whether anyone actually turns anything in. Him and Senna is the teacher couple that seems like opposites but actually are pretty similar and balance each other out.
Senna: That English teacher that every mentally ill student becomes emotionally attached to. You know what I’m talking about. She’s so sweet, funny, and chill so all the kids love her class. Tries to include memes in her presentations to seem “with it” but they’re like, doge memes from 2014. But the kids appreciate the effort.
Pema: Definitely the sweet English teacher that occasionally has a mental breakdown when the students test her patience. Otherwise very chill. Also teaches the Childhood Education and Development class. Her, Senna, and Bumi II run the school newspaper.
Bataar: Drafting. Pretty chill, very skilled, and def smokes on the weekend. Also, him and Suyin are that teacher couple that everyone likes.
Suyin: Dance. Super nice and always has like to of those smelly plug in things going so her room smells good and has a “good vibe that evokes emotion”. Always plays EDM or weird 80s rock to get the kids moving. She runs the school dance team. When Bataar has prep period, he sometimes drops in to see Su dance, cause she’s mesmerizing to watch. All the kids think that, coupled with the fact that they eat lunch together every day, makes them the cutest couple ever.
Amon: Drama. He loves directing kids on how to totally live a role. If you can imagine, he sometimes gets a little overdramatic about drama, forgetting that these are just highschool kids, not Oscar winners, but his passion makes the class more enjoyable. Runs Drama Club with Tarrlok.
Tarrlok: Probably Physics. A difficult class, but he’s pretty good at explaining so most kids don’t struggle too much. His main focus is running student government, which he takes pretty seriously. Sometimes too seriously.
Unalaq: Teaches Psychology. The most pretentious teacher on campus. It’s literally so bad, that even other teachers avoid him. Amon abandoned his coffee still being brewed in the machine in the staff room cause Unalaq walked in and he didn’t want to be in a room with Unalaq again after he said that Amon’s outfit “looked like something stolen from the lost and found of a funeral home”. Unalaq sees it as “telling it like it is”.
Zaheer: Government and Politics. Tries to teach the class very well but also injects his own opinion into teaching a lot. The students find him scary but some also kinda think he’s hot. Also does Yearbook. Him and Senna run Mock Trial. Replaced the old Government and Politics teacher Hou-Ting after she retired. She was that one old teacher that made it a hobby to harrass students and constantly reminisced about when you could smack students.
P’Li: Math teacher. Much scarier than Zaheer. Plays her trash ass music very loudly while the kids work. Def yells at kids. She’s kind of funny when she’s in a good mood tho, and when she roasts kids it’s really funny cause it’s usually dead on. Her and Zaheer are those teachers that flirt a lot and you know they’re sleeping together.
Ming-Hua: Art. Loves drawing and, you guessed it, watercolor painting. Very chill and plays soft music but lets you listen to your own music. Super sarcastic and all the students eat it up. Literally a universal favorite. She runs Art Club and Fashion Club.
Ghazan: Guitar. Pretty cool teacher that definitely has some weird stories. All the students know he has a crush on Ming-Hua cause they flirt constantly, but he denies it. Runs E-Sports Club. Idk why I think that, it just feels right. Him and Ming-Hua are also the kinds of teachers kids become emotionally attached to.
Kuvira: Government and Politics also. Seems calm and reasonable, but is a total ass. Makes kids give up their phones, allows almost no talking, gives out more detentions a week than most teachers do in one year, and doesn’t allow for much discussion. Everyone wants her class cause she’s hot but most drop within the first week, to the point that counselors have to say no to some kids so they don’t have to get rid of the class altogether.
Bataar Jr.: Computer Lit teacher. None of the students respect him so they’ll play Minecraft the whole time or play inappropriate videos really loud. Doesn’t really put much effort into teaching, which for some kids is a dream, but for others is an annoyance. Him and Kuvira are the teacher couple that makes everyone say “wtf”. Literally no one knows why they’re together.
Izumi: Secretary/Attendance. Pretty much remembers everything and is super organized. She is the glue that holds the school together. Most students don’t know her name though cause she’s super quiet and works mostly behind the scenes. Whenever Zuko sends anyone her way though he reminds them of her name and to say thank you cause he recognizes how hard his daughter works to keep everything running smoothly. Izumi catches on to this and always manages to thank her dad with a nice tea and a hug.
Toph: Vice Principal. Scary as fuck. Doesn’t ever call kids’ parents cause she efficiently scares the shit out of every kid, so they never do whatever bad thing they were doing again. When she has to work dances, Katara always tries to get her to dance with her. She resists every time, but she always gives eventually. She’s happy to though, cause although she’ll never say it out loud, seeing Katara this happy at her old age warms her heart.
Katara: Health Clerk. Very sweet and everybody loves her. Sometimes kids pretend to feel sick just to talk to her. She doesn’t mind though cause a kid that has a tummy ache and a kid that needs to talk are both kids that need help, and she’s happy to offer whatever support she can. She also always offers to supervise dances when the school has them and always manages to bust a move.
Zuko: Counselor. Wants to be to students what his uncle was to him. Aang and Sokka were counselors too, some years ago. And while they could give some good nuggets of advice and offered the kids amazing support, they also would totally fuck up student’s schedules by accident cause those numbskulls were exactly that- numbskulls. So usually Zuko would have to fix that. He misses fixing their messes and, more importantly, he misses them (they aren’t dead, just retired). He hopes to retire soon too, cause he’s getting too old for this, but he secretly doesn’t want to retire just yet cause working at school allows him to see and spend time with Izumi. Since they’re both working, it’s not like they have too much time together, but even just her popping into his office to bring him tea or check in on how he’s doing that day brings a smile to his face that doesn’t leave for the rest of the day.
Raiko: Principal. After Toph stepped down cause she’s “too old for this shit” (her words), Raiko stepped in. The students aren’t a fan of him but he’s not terrible. And since Toph is still Vice Principal, she keeps him in check.

ikevamp suitors’ music tastes
the idea of arthur having memorised the whole of WAP won’t leave me alone hence here we are
fun fact: everyone shares a spotify premium family package under comte’s name (yes even shakespeare). comte has pulled some strings so ALL of them are covered in his one plan, so his kids can enjoy their music without annoying ads interrupting their pleasant listening experience
napoleon
super eclectic tastes, a true mixed bag
you want something from billboard’s hot 100? man’s got you covered. you want something indie? give him a moment to sort through his top 10 artists to give you the best. you want something that’s nothing but instruments? well he’s your guy too
he’s the only one allowed to have the aux in the car (well, more like van or minibus, considering how many of them there are) bc he’s the only one whose taste is diverse enough to satisfy everyone. ANYONE else having the aux would lead to a full-blown fistfight
highkey stans little mix bc he loves their women empowerment anthems RESPECT 👏🏼 WOMEN 👏🏼 JUICE & the way the ladies harmonise so well together
mozart
would dabble in a little bit of everything but will ultimately stick to his roots in classical
cannot stand rap or metal (this has led to many, MANY fights in the mansion)
anything else is fine in his books. he can tolerate some degree of pop, but the most poppy he can handle is baby one more time by britney spears before the urge to cancel any music that’s not classical overcomes him
do NOT play him ‘my humps mozart remix’ he WILL rip your kneecaps out
leonardo
a bit of a mixed bag too, though not to the degree of napoleon
there’s a bit of hip-hop, some EDM, lots of indie rock, and a few notable latin-pop-inspired bops
he can’t dance (or so he insists) but when alejandro by lady gaga comes on, best belief he WILL be turning the fuck up. every time he hears the iconic transition from chromatica II to 911 best believe he loses ALL his shit (that transition came for my fucking throat when i first heard it holy shit)
he’s a HUGE lady gaga stan fellow italians unite amirite? stans practically everything she’s put out, from the fame all the way to chromatica
arthur
nicki minaj is his QUEEN. homeboy can rap the entirety of super bass without missing a single beat—that’s how many times he’s listened to it
has been obsessed with WAP ever since it dropped lmao it’s his alarm now
honestly he probably likes any sexual song lmao. talk dirty, genie in a bottle, bang bang & anaconda are regular rotations on his playlist
deliberately blasts his tunes at max volume to piss mozart off. napoleon & jean have had to break up the fight a couple times, while theo just laughed his ass off in the background bc he’s too busy enjoying watching arthur get his ass beaten
vincent
constantly streaming lofi chillhop beats, though occasionally he’ll switch out his usual lofi rotation for some yeehaw taylor swift, especially if he’s in an art block
stuff like our song, tim mcgraw, and sparks fly are on constant repeat when he goes on a t-swift binge. you can find him humming the entire fearless album while sketching. once he painted something inspired by sparks fly: a breathtaking scene of fireworks in the night sky with a couple kissing under it. after completing it, he thought of his girl and was so overcome with affection he had to find her immediately
surprisingly, he also has a slight inclination to rock music on the down-low. the only non-napoleon person who’s allowed to have the aux is vincent bc no one can say no to him, and it always gives them a massive shock when love story by taylor swift suddenly transitions into a rock ballad. vincent continues smiling and humming, unperturbed. you’d think they’d be used to sudden whiplashes in music after having napoleon in charge of the aux but sometimes they forget sweet angelic vincent lowkey adores rock lmao
theo
he acts like such a tough guy, but istg he has the most POPPY taste out of everyone
stans all the main pop girlies. ariana grande? fuck yeah. lady gaga? without a question. dua lipa? praise future nostalgia (dua lipa is a main pop girlie in my eyes okay fucking @ me). taylor swift? 1989 is his favourite album of ALL time, and new romantics is his personal anthem (vincent was the one who introduced taylor swift to him, and he fell in love with her more poppy stuff, though he doesn’t mind yeehaw taylor bc his beloved broer adores her)
still raves to kesha’s older party jams yes he wakes up feeling like p diddy what the fuck is it to you?
has a huge soft spot for synth pop too, so chances are you’ll get loads of 80′s bops with him
dazai
yet another mixed bag! he loves folk & acoustic stuff, sure, but some of his top tracks of all time are j-pop & k-pop
adores blackpink bc he likes how they can be sweet in some songs (hence the ‘pink’ in their name) & fierce and hardcore in others (hence the ‘black’). loves ice cream & how you like that in equal measure
but, but, BUT! this man is a walking meme on his own, so you can guarantee he’ll love the shit you can find on the weird side of youtube like starships canon in D version, bohemian WAPsody & bad guy (pumpkin cover) (starships canon in D actually slaps it has no right to but it DOES)
he’s ALSO a Sad Boi deep inside. buried deep in his playlist are taylor swift’s saddest songs. sure anyone with a heart would cry listening to all too well, but songs that hit ESPECIALLY hard for him are the archer, exile & this is me trying (the line ‘they told me all of my cages were mental, so i got wasted like all my potential’ hit a little TOO close to home)
isaac
another lofi chillhop stan
he does have a secret soft spot for pop, but he’d sooner eat an apple in front of arthur & dazai before admitting it
old backstreet boys classics like i want it that way do it for him. if he’s in an especially good mood, you can find him humming it under his breath... and then that good mood will promptly be ruined when arthur & dazai inevitably catch him and start deliberately singing it offkey just to fuck with him
arthur likes to switch it up by singing the B99 ‘version’ instead nOW NUMBER FIVE. no one has explained the meme to isaac, and honestly? isaac would rather not know and just enjoy his backstreet boys in peace.
jean
gospel
c’mon what else were you expecting? he’s a good christian boi so he’s gonna listen to some good christian tunes
but he also vibes HARD with emo music hAVEN’T YOU PEOPLE EVER HEARD OF CLOSING THE GODDAMN DOOR like c’mon he has the emo hair so he might as well go all the way
but honestly he’d just listen to whatever napoleon puts on. he’s not particularly picky, the only songs he can’t stand being the particularly,,,, rAUNCHY ones (the first time he heard arthur playing WAP he immediately tried dunking arthur into a pool of holy water sksdkjsd)
shakespeare
musical soundtracks hit the spot for him. any musical song, give it to william and there’s a 99% guarantee he’ll love it
besides that? yeehaw, thanks to vincent playing yeehaw taylor swift to him. other than being more than a little bemused after listening to love story, he quite likes her music. he appreciates the storytelling and wit behind her lyrics
folklore stan for sure. he highkey digs the teenage love triangle going on and is already doing his first draft of a play involving betty, james & the august girl (if it were up to him, betty wouldn’t have taken james back at the end of the song betty. and if it were also up to him, he’d make it a sapphic love triangle after reading theories that james is actually a girl & that the teenage love triangle is a lesbian one)
give him a song with a captivating storyline, killer vocals, and a key change in the final chorus, and you’ll have this man’s wholeass heart (he’s all about the dramatics, after all)
comte
jAZZ. ALL THE JAZZ. EVERYONE ELSE except napoleon CAN’T STAND IT BUT NO ONE DARES TELL HIM BC THEY DON’T WANT TO BE KICKED OUT OF THE FAMILY PLAN
the most recent music he has..... is from the 80′s lmfao. he unironically loves we built this city by starship, much to the horror of arthur & theo (that song is one of the few 80′s songs theo absolutely CANNOT STAND)
theo under his breath: “if you brought me back to life just to subject me to this then i’d rather you just let me stay dead” / comte: “did you say something, theo?” / theo, forcing the fakest smile in the history of fake smiles: “nothing comte i’m just sOOOO glad you brought me back to life so i could listen to this wonderful classic banger :)))))”
comte soon picks up on the hate and uses it to his advantage. whenever he wants alone time with MC, he makes sure to play his jazz and we built this city at max volume to scare the residents to the other side of the mansion for a good few hours
sebastian
i honestly can’t really put my finger on what sebas would like. i think his tastes would be quite varied? you’d find some j-pop in his playlist, along with some western pop hits that became huge in japan, and alternative stuff. and lorde. lots of lorde in his playlist. ALL the lorde.
he pays more attention to what the vampires like and records it down in his diary like “DAZAI-SENSEI HAS DISCOVERED YET ANOTHER ODD TUNE FROM THE WEIRD SIDE OF YOUTUBE THIS ONE IS STAYIN’ ALIVE BUT BEATS 2 & 4 ARE SWAPPED. DAZAI-SENSEI’S TASTES CONTINUE TO BE AS ECCENTRIC AS EVER” or “OMG I JUST HEARD MASTER THEODORUS SINGING GOD IS A WOMAN SDJASDJHF”
the other suitors have various singers they like, but sebastian will always be a history stan first and foremost
bonus: i have no idea what the fuck faust would like, but i’m assigning horror movie sound effects to vlad and disney soundtracks to charles fOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVEEEEER

omg the virals favorite music types. I need to know what Hi has going through his earbuds. and Whitney? i always pictured her as someone that would listen to country.
i'm SO glad you asked
tory: we know for a fact she listens to coldplay so i also imagined since she (deeply unfortunately) has i'm-not-like-other-girls syndrome it was a lot of alt rock like that, but nothing too aggressive mostly all time low, all american rejects, etc. PLUS she has a lot of oldies like the rolling stones, fleetwood mac, and queen from her mom
shelton: ONE DIRECTION!! he's a 1D stan first and a human second. he's totally a zayn girl. he also likes almost all pop music and the occasional rap song and for some reason i get a techno vibe as well
hi: literally just the weirdest shit imaginable. like if you shuffle his library you'll get some 80s pop synth, a weird nightcore remix, then a song from the wiggles. ben once claimed it made his ears bleed but hi is insistent that he doesn't know what "real music" is
ben: his emo attire is inspired by classic pop punk. green day, the white stripes, blink 182. but also, being a good ol' southern boy, he can't help lovin' a little country (tory makes fun of him constantly)
ella: anything and everything. if it has a beat she'll groove to it but she really likes pop music and also EDM
jason: imagine dragons 😔

The same edm song had been playing over and over on loop through the past few hours at loud enough volume through your earbuds to block out pretty much everything else, and you continue to zone in and out as you let yourself drown in the melody, occasionally finding it in you to be present enough to have solid thoughts and hastily scribble down some more things onto the blank page you’d randomly opened your notebook to—though it was only a mere handful of moments of adding more lime green ink to the paper before you inevitably slipped back into a weirdly semi-zoned out state that leaned a bit more towards the complete state of it. You’re currently somehow a chaotic blend between the phrase of “no thoughts, head empty” and “many thoughts about many things”, but the many things that are crossing your mind are brief and in bits and pieces of actual coherency, your own inner voice seeming to be just a teeny tiny tad bit faded in comparison to how it usually is, thus your thoughts had somehow become more feeling and image based. But despite how the things on your mind seem to be much messier than usual, nothing particularly unpleasant had made itself known in your mind, and you feel a hollowed out version of delight swell in you at the realization that though your mind is messier than usual today, it had nonetheless given you a sort of peace that you were grateful for.
And thus, before you had given in to looping the song you’d been pretty hyper fixated on, you’d decided to try to make a bit of a to-do list for the next day, only to be overwhelmed by the desire to write down the colors of your favorite voices in kpop that you’d heard so far on a different page in the notebook. So far, through the few hours that had passed, though you only had a mere dozen idols and their voice colors listed, you find yourself feeling that you didn’t really mind at how small the list was, seeing as you’d put a lot of time and faded hazy thought into each one you had scribbled down.
But then you got to jotting down Jinyoung’s name on the paper, and you pause as you try to better collect yourself to try and compose any thoughts that are more along the lines of your usual inner self speaking loud and clear. Knowing it would be easier to do so in silence, you grab your phone and turn the music off. A minute drags on afterwards, then two, three, even four. Slowly but surely, you find that any fogginess you had in your head has ebbed away enough for you to really focus on what colors to put down for his voice. Another minute passes before you write the first color down, and then the second, third, and fourth.
An all-too-familiar voice speaks softly, and you vaguely register the lovely sound as Jinyoung’s voice, but since you were heavily focused on what you had written and if you had put the truly correct hues next to his name, you hadn’t quite caught what he’d said and so you had to force yourself to tear your eyes away from the notebook and focus on him instead. A quiet but questioning hum from you as a way of asking him to repeat himself warrants a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
“What’s got you so quiet today??” He questions, tone still soft and tinged with what you’ve come to recognize as a sort of grogginess that can only come from just waking up from a cat nap.
“Nothing much, “ You offer him a small smile of your own in return and pat the spot on the couch next to you, “Just didn’t quite have a lot of physical or mental energy today, but in a more okay and neutral way instead.”
A small and throaty sort of sound and a nod is his response as he makes his way over and decides to go over the couch instead of around to plop himself into the space next to you. His first glance at what you had written so far with colors next to idol names piqued his curiosity, and he leans forward to get a closer look, eyes eagerly taking in everything you’ve listed despite not really understanding what it all means. When he sees that his name is there as well with some colors, an almost grin crosses his face and he can’t help how he feels as if the fondness in his heart is nearly overwhelming.
“So what are the colors for??” He asks, looking back at you.
“Just what I think the colors of everyone’s voices are. And for your voice… I really think that like, it’s… A hazy sort of dark shade that’s not quite black yet, the finest of wine reds, a sort of deep and rich grey that’s kinda warm in tone, and a messy dark mixed berry hue.”
He nods in understanding, and the fondness in his heart really becomes too much then, as he moves to press his lips gingerly against the top of your head, “I’m flattered that you think my voice has such nice colors, but may I ask, what made you have the idea of voice colors??”
You take a moment to think, seeing as you’re also curious on why your brain decided to come up with such an idea.
“Honestly??” You take another moment to pause and see if you just really can’t figure out why before continuing, “I really dunno. It just kinda popped up in my head for like half a second and then I found myself having an uncontrollable impulse to write it down. I guess maybe… It’s because of how I’ve always been one to pay a lot of attention to colors and people’s voices?? But I dunno though.”
“Cute.” He murmurs, “Very cute.”
You feel your stomach suddenly give a bit of an achy rumble, and though it was quiet, it was still audible to Jinyoung.
“Snack time??” He chuckles, starting to get up, knowing how you had probably lost track of time and forgotten to eat anything since you both had eaten breakfast due to how you can get easily wrapped up in whatever you may find yourself working on throughout the day.
“Snack time.” You nod with as serious of an expression as you can muster before getting up with him to go to the kitchen, though it’s impossible to keep the expression for more than a second or two before giggling a bit.
He tousles your hair slightly and you eagerly get up to follow him to acquire snacks.

Interview with Jaesyun
Introduce yourself!
Hello everyone! My name is Jason, or “jaesyun” as some of you know me as, and I’m happy to meet you all! Even if it’s over the internet. I live in New York City and I currently work in the startup world. My hobbies include volleyball and music festivals. I’m your typical gay Asian raver obsessed with Illenium and Gryffin. I love traveling and making new friends, so if you see me (after the pandemic) say hi!
What size underwear do you wear? And how do you keep your butt looking so sexy?
It depends on the brand and type! I’m a small for thongs and jockstraps, but my ass is too big to fit into small briefs so I have to wear a medium.
I’ve played volleyball since I was 10 years old, so that definitely helped my ass! Now I play less often but I lift more. Leg days are my favorite!
Nice! What is your booty workout?
Squats, box jumps, glute bridges, Stairmaster.
Fun Fact, I can box jump over 4ft 👀
What type of underwear do you wear when you’re playing sports and working out?
See... I don’t wear underwear when I work out...🤭🤭
What position are you in volleyball?
I played as a Libero through college and now I’m an Outside Hitter.
What position do you play in bed?
Bottom. But every once in a blue moon I’ve made other bottoms very happy as the occasional top 😂
What is the key to being a good top/bottom?
Don’t be selfish!
If you could create a line up for a music festival, what would it be?
Oh. Great!
Illenium, Gryffin, Seven Lions, Jason Ross, Slander, Excision, Rezz, Dillon Francis, Gesaffelstein, Griz, Martin Garrix, Odesza, Kygo, Kaskade, Madeon, Porter Robinson, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Cash Cash, Alan Walker, Chris Lake, Above and Beyond, Adventure Club, Alesso, ARMHMR, Avicii (RIP), Axwell /\ Ingrosso, CHVRCHES, Ekali, Don Diablo, Eric Prydz (HOLO), Garett Emory (LaserFace), Galantis, Jai Wolf, Said the Sky, Dabin, Louis The Child, NGHTMRE, Steve Aoki, Tiesto, Zedd, Zhu.
Hahaha it’s a long list. I wouldn’t mind some pop girls on there like Lady Gaga. Chromatica and Artpop deserve the WORLD.
What is your best festival memory?
EDC Orlando 2019. It was the perfect ending to last year’s festival season. All my best friends were there and the lineup had almost everyone on my dream line up.
It was a completely drama-free weekend which almost never happens with a group of 35 gays.
35 drama fee gays? You’re lying! 😂😂
Nope! And a few ladies! We were all hugging and singing along to First Time by Seven Lions, Slander, and Dabin at the top of our lungs.
It was sweet and really emotional cause it was the last festival we knew we were all gonna be at until 2020. And now we might not see each other until next year. So that’s kinda sad.
It sounds like you're a pro at the festival scene. What kind of tips would you give first-time festival goers?
Don’t be afraid to talk to people. People in the EDM scene are so nice. Once I got lost and my phone didn’t have service (oh yea your phone won’t have service at festivals) and a group of straights basically adopted me and we had a blast for the entire night until I found my friends. I still keep up with them!
Also, DRINK WATER! It’s a marathon not a sprint. Enjoy the experience.
How did you celebrate Pride in previous years? How will you be celebrating Pride this year?
No special celebrations in the past! In college, I would party my life away, but when I moved to New York I had to work a lot during pride. I worked almost all of World Pride last year except for the last night (I went to see Kygo close out World Pride at the Javits Center). Part of my job is diversity and inclusion so I help with Pride events and try to engage the community in meaningful ways.
This year I’m working again, but mostly to help make an impact with the Black Lives Matter movement since so much of Pride is intersectional.
Can you explain to people why Black Lives Matter is so important to Pride?
LGBTQ people come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. We owe all of our rights today to the Stonewall riots started by trans and queer people of color who were mostly black. These same people are still disproportionately affected today by discrimination and a racist system. Additionally, putting aside our history, even if we didn’t owe everything we have today, including our ability to openly celebrate Pride, to these past black leaders, we as people of the LGBTQ community at MINIMUM should have empathy for a group of people being discriminated against for who they are. Black Lives Matter shouldn’t even be a debate. The bar is so low for some people, that it’s on the floor. How can anyone not care about the lives of other human beings who are being treated so terribly that they are being killed at an alarming rate by the government who is supposed to serve and protect everyone? I don’t want to take too much time on this because I am not Black and I don’t want to make this conversation about me. I want to amplify Black voices, not scream over them. Visit https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ to get more involved and educate yourself and those around you!
Do you have a final message?
Please be kind to the people around you! Keep an open mind. There are always things that you can do to better yourself and the world around you. Don’t be afraid to change your opinion on something when presented with new information. The person I was 4 years ago is not the person I am today. Be the best version of yourself!

Lol half of 1989 was single so I feel like I heard it all. If it's oldies I listen to rock or indie or hip-hop but new music I have mostly been sticking to alternative or rap and hip-hop for a while with occasional pop album here and there ( what's pop anyways). Were you always like this or it's an acquired skill ( taste)?
I've always loved music! My grandparents put me on oldies and classic country, my parents loved classic rock and some other stuff, I grew up in the golden age of mtv, I probably still owe columbia house a few thousand dollars lol, there were actual music stores back then too, I consumed a LOT of different music and then I got v music snobbish in high school and then grew past that fortunately. Music is everything, we shouldnt limit ourselves, bc if we do we are missing a LOT of brilliant stuff we never would find if we stay in a little box. I think its beneficial to at least try things! I love things from classical to thrash metal and everything in between, although I have had difficulty with edm and house music, just could never get into it really. Not my thing I guess 🤷‍♀️

10 Underused Character Questions
Introduction -
Name: Jacqueline Dulcet
Age: 25
Your favorite picture of your muse’s fc:
Tumblr media
Questions -
What would be their twitter name? What sorts of tweets would they tweet? Honestly, she’d just go simple with @djChatelaine for the most part, since that’s where she’d connect with her fans on social media. Her main tweets are more or less random thoughts she has throughout the day, promoting her songs and her friends songs, and then just overall posting unfortunate memes when she hits an art block. She has a lot of conversations with her fans on there.
And then she might have a totally personal account under @chatedul which is all private and lowkey, where she’s allowed to randomly vent or repost random tweets that resonate with her. She likes the funny tweets the most.
What’s their favorite genre of movies? Of music? Romantic comedies, regular comedies and action packed movies! In terms of music, she prefers Jazz or Progressive House, sometimes she likes the occasional Pop song. She has a severe hatred for dubstep though, it’s one of the genre’s she hates the most in terms of EDM.
What’s on their top queue on Netflix?  She’s not really one to spend her time in front of a TV tbh because a lot of it really bores her for the most part, but for the few times she would be watching something, I would say most of it is anime actually. She enjoys shows like Akatsuki no Yona, Violet Evergarden, Fullmetal Alchemist and things like that. Something that keeps her entertained but not invested is her go to.
What’s their favorite scent? Do they smell like that?  Lavender, the smell of the ocean and petrichor. And for the most part yes, she smells like lavender a lot, but also no. Often times she also smells like sulfur, because she deals a lot with pyrotechnics at her events and it gets into her hair and her clothes and literally everything.
She’s grown to somewhat like the scent of that too, actually. It’s comforting, to a certain extent.
Apple or Android?  Apple.
Favorite Season? Least favorite season?  Summer is her favorite, because she loves the beach and loves the sun, and just the general feeling of the summer air, but also she hates the severe heat, so so long as she’s not roasting, she’s a-okay. Least favorite would likely be Autumn tbh, she’s not so much a fan of all the dead leaves and all, even though they are very pretty, but she’d much rather take cold snow over that any day.
Are they a bottom or top or versatile?  Versatile. Primarily is she a dom, but it’s only when she’s head over heels in love with someone that she’s a sub. And then she’s a sub a lot.  Describe their morning routine. Do they wake up early or sleep in? Do they press the snooze button a bunch of times or do they immediately get up?  It’s rare if she ever actually wakes up in the morning, often is it instead 12 noon onwards. Her body clock is wired differently since she works most of the night, so she gets home by 4am or 6am and that’s the only time she gets some sleep. She sleeps in as much as possible, because she genuinely likes her rest, but she also has a lot of interrupted sleep and insomnia so the few chances she has to sleep in and actually sleep are very important to her.
She bops the snooze button a lot when she has to actually set one, and that’s primarily the reason she’s often late to morning meetings for work. Or morning meetings in general.
Don’t set morning meetings with her, she’ll arrive at least thirty minutes late.
If they were to be compared to a canon character, who would that be?  I wanna say maybe she’d have the same fan made (?) personality as Hilda/Touko from Pokemon Black? Because of the whole idea of them both being reckless and chaotic heroes and having a smidgen sense of darkness to their personalities, but otherwise, I think Jackie is in a league of her own.
Finish this sentence, muse : “What would ____ do ____ ” "What would I need to do for a proper home cooked meal right now?”

On a modest stage inside a tent in downtown Los Angeles, the four members of the South Korean girl group Blackpink assume a diamond formation and aim their fingers like guns at the audience as they launch into the chorus of their breakout hit, “Ddu-du Ddu-du”: “Wait till I do what I ... Hit you with that ddu-du ddu-du du!”
It’s the afternoon before the Grammys at Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge’s annual showcase, where he presents the company’s prospective superstars to a crowd of record executives and industry types. (Past performers have included Ariana Grande, Halsey and Shawn Mendes.) With their intense choreography, dance-heavy beats and Clueless-esque high-fashion looks, the four women offer the kind of bells-and-whistles pop production that makes them an anomaly not just on today’s lineup, where rappers like 2 Chainz and Lil Baby abound, but also on the charts, where women like Grande serve up their divadom with an extra dose of realness.
The showcase marks Blackpink’s first stateside performance, though the band made history long before: “Ddu-du Ddu-du” became the highest-charting single by a Korean girl group on the Billboard Hot 100 when it peaked at No. 55 last June, and this April the act will be the first Korean girl group to play Coachella, before embarking on a North American arena tour. “Ddu-du Ddu-du,” sung mostly in Korean, is a boastful warning to those who underestimate Blackpink, with a hook (meant to imitate the sound of bullets flying) that’s also a canny invitation to non-Korean listeners -- anyone can sing the words. The buttoned-up UMG crowd seems a little unsure, but also intrigued: Just as Blackpink’s Jennie -- soft-spoken in person, but onstage a fierce singer and rapper -- slides into a rat-tat-tat flow in the second verse, more and more audience members whip out their phones to capture video.
There’s no longer any question that K-pop is happening in America. BTS, the seven-member South Korean boy band, scored two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 in 2018 and became the first K-pop group to sell out an American stadium when it played New York’s Citi Field in October. Yet despite the group’s visibility here, K-pop remains somewhat detached from the mainstream: It receives relatively little top 40 airplay despite fan-army pressure on radio stations, its artists rarely tour with non-K-pop acts, and outside of its intensely passionate fan groups, K-pop stars hardly drive the wider “conversation” that someone like Grande can dominate with a single tweet.
Blackpink represents Korean music’s latest, greatest hope at breaking out of the American K-pop box. The group believes its multinational identity gives it global appeal: Sweet-voiced Jisoo, 24, is a South Korean native; buoyant rapper Lisa, 21, is from Thailand; guitar-playing Rosé, 22, grew up in Australia; and Jennie, 23, was born in South Korea but spent some formative years in New Zealand. “You don’t have to understand Korean to understand the music, the visuals, the vibe,” says Jisoo, through a translator. (Rosé and Jennie are fluent in English; Lisa alternates between English and Korean during our interview.) “We’ve got so much Korean culture and so much Western culture in us,” adds Rosé, her Australian accent still pronounced.
And though occasional English lyrics already pepper their tracks, Jennie notes that recording all-English songs is something they “definitely want to do” in the future. (They’re focused on making their debut album first.) Even their sound -- an omnivorous fusion of fist-pumping EDM and booming hip-hop beats with flashes of house, ’80s pop and harmonica-driven folk -- seems conceived for the widest possible audience. “I was immediately drawn to their fierce and empowering energy,” says Dua Lipa, who asked the group to guest on last year’s bilingual banger “Kiss and Make Up.” “They are not just giving you hit songs -- they are sending a message that resonates beyond the lyrics.”
Last fall, Blackpink signed to Interscope Records, which will serve as both a creative and business partner to YG Entertainment, the group’s Korean home and one of South Korea’s three main music companies along with SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. These companies serve as label, management firm and production studio, controlling almost every aspect of their artists’ careers. Interscope chairman/CEO John Janick says that YG’s leadership -- Hyunsuk “YG” Yang, its founder, and Teddy Park, Blackpink’s main producer and creative director -- “runs the show,” but the relationship is collaborative: Sam Riback, Interscope’s pop-rock A&R head, has made multiple trips to YG’s Seoul headquarters and “has been sending them lots of different ideas,” according to Janick. “Our goal,” he says, “is to amplify what YG has been doing globally.”
If Interscope can help turn Blackpink into a truly global superstar act, the partnership could become a model for other labels looking to invest in K-pop and even pave the way for joint imprints. “This deal could be a benchmark,” says YG’s Joojong “JJ” Joe, who heads the company’s U.S. operations from a small house near Los Angeles’ Echo Park. It will also confirm Interscope’s foresight about K-pop. In 2011, the label signed the group Girls’ Generation during one of the earlier waves of K-pop imports, when artists like BoA and Wonder Girls worked with Western producers and companies.
At the time, those artists barely made a dent on the mainstream charts, and their backers took a hit: Despite high-profile promotional appearances, Girls’ Generation’sThe Boys LP sold only 1,000 copies in the United States during its first week in 2012, according to Nielsen Music. Since then, however, streaming platforms have made it easier for fans to discover and support Korean music, while the growth of social media has also allowed them to forge deep connections with artists everywhere. “In this era, people find their music and their talented artists on the internet,” says Susan Rosenbluth, senior vp at AEG Presents/Goldenvoice, who helped book Blackpink’s North American tour and notes that K-pop’s stateside audience “does not follow along ethnic lines.”
To Janick, the success of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s chart-topping Latin hit, “Despacito,” aided by a Justin Bieber remix, made English-speaking listeners more open-minded in general to music in other languages. “We’re going to have hits from all different territories -- more of them, and more often than we’ve seen in the past,” he says.
But the onus isn’t just on listeners to embrace Korean music -- it’s on industry gatekeepers too. At the UMG showcase, the reaction to Blackpink is enthusiastic, but it feels muted compared with the rousing ovation the crowd gives classic-rock revivalists Greta Van Fleet, whose 2018 debut album was notoriously panned by some critics as derivative. The response to Blackpink’s Interscope deal, however, suggests that attitude could change.
“So many artists on our roster started calling, saying, ‘I want to work with these girls.’ Radio stations were asking when new music was going to be out,” says Interscope executive vp business development Jeremy Erlich, who facilitated early conversations between the label and YG (he and Joe attended business school together). “The industry’s ready. When the music comes out, I don’t think there’s going to be many people saying, ‘This is just a fad.’”
The day before the showcase, the ladies of Blackpink are ensconced in a hotel suite high above downtown L.A. Lisa, dressed in a gray fleece and a checkered coat, spies the Hollywood sign through a corner window and bounds off a couch for a closer look. Her bandmates, cozied up in brightly colored sweatshirts and cardigans, admit they weren’t expecting Los Angeles in February to be so chilly. During some rare downtime the previous day, they went shopping in Santa Monica. “It was supposed to be for fashion,” says Jennie, “but we ended up just grabbing anything that was warm.”
This is Blackpink’s first trip to L.A., but it has been almost a decade in the making. The group’s members came to Seoul from all over the world starting in 2010 to take part in YG’s rigorous recruitment and training process. The company and its competitors hold tryouts both within and far beyond Korea (Rosé traveled to Sydney from her home in Melbourne), seeking recruits who are typically preteens or teens, ethnically Korean and fluent in the language, though these qualities are not mandatory. Lisa, who auditioned in her native Thailand in 2010, didn’t speak any Korean when she began training in Seoul in 2011.
For all four women, joining YG meant enrolling in a kind of full-time pop-star academy that Jennie calls “more strict than school” and that Rosé likens to The X Factor with dorm rooms. For 12 hours a day, seven days a week, the future members of Blackpink -- along with, by Jennie’s estimate, 10-20 other aspiring singers who cycled through the project -- studied singing, dancing and rapping, taking part in monthly tests designed to identify their strengths and weed out subpar trainees. “Somebody would come in with a piece of paper and stick it on a wall, and it would say who did best, who did worst, who’s going home,” recalls Jennie, whom YG initially steered toward rapping because she spoke fluent English. “You get a score -- A, B, C,” Lisa explains. “Lisa would always get A’s for everything,” adds Jennie with a laugh.
The process was lengthy. Before Blackpink debuted in 2016, Jennie spent six years in training, Lisa and Jisoo five and Rosé four. For the members who had left behind life outside South Korea, the pace of training on top of the culture shock was sometimes tough. “I’d call my parents crying,” recalls Rosé. “But as much as it was hard for me to cope with all of that, it made me more hungry. I remember my mom would be like, ‘If it’s so hard for you, just come back home.’ But I’d be like” -- she mimics a surly teen’s glare, much to the others’ amusement -- “‘That’s not what I’m talking about!’” Lisa credits her future bandmates with easing her transition. “Jennie would speak English to me, and Jisoo helped me out with my Korean,” she says. Rosé was the last of the bunch to enter training, but she remembers the four of them bonding during an all-night jam session when she arrived. “We just clicked,” she says.
That’s clearly still the case: Rosé sometimes puts her hand on Lisa’s knee when translating for her, and at one point Jennie and Jisoo huddle close together to silently adjust one of their necklaces, displaying the intimacy of close friends. “We don’t really have a day off,” says Lisa. (Once every two weeks, Rosé clarifies.) And because their families are so far-flung, they often spend their time off with each other anyway. “We’re stuck together,” says Rosé, laughing.
While K-pop companies have a reputation for packaging groups assembly line-style, Blackpink’s members insist they have plenty of creative input, despite having no official writing credits on their tracks. Park plays them music he’s working on and “really tries to put our thoughts into our songs,” says Jennie. “He really gets his inspirations from us.”
“It’s important as recording artists that they actually truly own their songs,” says Park. The women all make suggestions about who should sing what, and if a part doesn’t feel right to someone, he will make adjustments. “He doesn’t just bring us a song, like, ‘Go practice,’” says Rosé.
Besides, the members of Blackpink have another creative outlet: Last fall, YG announced that they would all release solo material, starting with Jennie, whose debut single, “Solo,” topped Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart in December. Though the music is still created and put out by YG, the idea that group longevity and solo success aren’t mutually exclusive is a radical development in girl-group history -- one that Janick says only “makes the brand stronger.”
Stars who come through companies like YG are called “idols” in Korea and have historically been expected to maintain a squeaky-clean image. When Blackpink debuted, Jennie says YG was very selective about its promotional appearances: “We were trained to be a little more...” “Closed in?” Rosé suggests.
“Closed in” is exactly what the outspoken women ruling the U.S. charts now, from Grande to Halsey, are not -- they make deeply personal, even raw, music. But while Blackpink may well find success catering to an audience craving its kind of TRL-era pop spectacle -- Interscope’s Erlich calls the group “the modern Spice Girls” -- lately the band has been less concerned with appearing perfect, both onstage and off. “We always wanted to be out there, to be more true to ourselves and a little more free,” says Jennie. “Even we can get things wrong sometimes. We want to just show them the real us.”
Jennie and Lisa do just that when I ask how they expect to be received as rappers in America. Lisa lets out an embarrassed groan, withdrawing into her fleece. She has loved hip-hop since childhood and is obsessed with Tyga (“I love his swag,” she says, blushing). But she and Jennie seem well aware that a group of Asian women adopting a style pioneered by black American artists might be a hard sell for some stateside listeners who are keenly attuned to debates about cultural appropriation.
“Me and Lisa don’t talk about it out loud, but I know we have this big pressure,” says Jennie, who adds that she studied artists like Lauryn Hill and TLC when she first started rapping. She looks across the room at Lisa: “She’s going to kill it.” Lisa just scrunches up her face.
That kind of vulnerability may be what ultimately endears Blackpink to an American pop audience. “The artists that are the most successful in these situations are really authentic with how they can relate to a coming-of-age experience” in their music, says Goldenvoice’s Rosenbluth. “There’s a certain amount of authenticity to Blackpink that I really love. The dedication is heartfelt.”
Back at the showcase, the band finishes its set with the reggaetón-tinged “Forever Young,” featuring an intricately choreographed, hair-flipping dance break. As the beat reaches its booming climax, the bandmembers whip toward each other and strike a statuesque pose with their hands on their hips, just in time for the music to stop. They hold still for a moment as the lights dim, then drop their arms and turn toward each other, catching their breath and grinning like four young women who can’t quite believe they’re here.

00qad music headcanons
(I don’t feel qualified to write this (I don’t know enough about music) but I was inspired by Lap’s encouragement in the 00qad-discord)
James - as we all know he’s a dinosaur and doesn’t listen to anything that came out in the past 20 years probably. He might listen to the radio every now and then, but mainly BBC Radio 2 or 3 (because his particular tastes are more focused on suits and food than music). Sometimes he likes old classics from the 40s or 50s (something you can dance to with a partner), or he enjoys some classic rock at times (people playing actual instruments). And more recently he learned that he occasionally likes some classical music too (he initially had to learn more about it for a mission)
Q - while working he likes everything instrumental (can’t be distracted by lyrics or voices), it can range from something with a strong bass to something more atmospheric and ethereal, something with a pattern, songs that are like 9mins long. Edit addition: Classical Minimalism (e.g. Philip Glass, Steve Reich). A lot of times he listens to things on a loop (it helps him focus). At home he might like some David Bowie (huge range to choose from) or some EDM on a night out
Danny - obviously likes pop, EDM, and of course some show tunes. He likes music to go with his mood so he loves the huge range of playlists on spotify (there’s playlists for literally everything!) through that he discovers a lot of new music but at the same time is late to some bands that were cool 10 years ago. He doesn’t mind and just listens to whatever (he just doesn’t like silence)
Alex - growing up he was mainly exposed to classical music and sometimes opera as a treat (Frances’ words). For a long time it was the only thing he knew and he started hearing the patterns behind it as it works well with his mathematical brain (he’d have liked to learn an instrument but Frances didn’t let him). He still likes Mozart and Puccini every now and then, but now also ventured into more playful things like Purcell for instance. And he likes film scores (without really knowing the movies), he’s particularly fond of Einaudi and Korzeniowski.  Edit addition: Classical Minimalism (e.g. Philip Glass, Steve Reich)

Pampuria - loves a fanfare (everything that makes her feel like the princess she is)
Turing - mostly adjusts to what everybody else in the household is listening to. But when he’s home alone he’ll put on some 80s tunes and dance around a la Risky Business

SELENA GOMEZ - LOOK AT HER NOW
[5.82]
The single at least one of you requested...
Ian Mathers: I say, I am beginning to get an inkling that this song intends us to think that it is subtextually referring to one Justin Bieber! [3]
Michael Hong: Proof that a breakup track doesn't have to be forced and predictable to demonstrate confidence. Chopped background vocals, a chorus that creates euphoria through its blurred loop, and Selena Gomez twirling the production around her voice like a loose strand of hair -- it's an amalgamation of Gomez's excellent 2017 singles, and an absolute earworm. [7]
Joshua Lu: Selena Gomez's comeback singles are like a display of Julia Michaels's range as a songwriter, a dichotomy that brings to mind Revival's "Perfect" and "Hands to Myself" -- or Nervous System's "Worst In Me" and "Pink." Julia's entire mainstream career beginning in the interim does affect the song's present-day freshness. But "Look At Her Now" paves new ground as much as it retreads old styles. Flattening synths push those "Issues"-esque string plucks into the backdrop, and Selena's stutters are more rapid and more nonsensical, and thus more captivating. It's quirky, catchy, and when those background vocals come in during the second chorus, surprisingly transcendent. Sure, Julia and Selena work an awful lot together, but can you fault them when their output is still this good? [7]
Thomas Inskeep: Sleek minimalist synth-pop fits Gomez better than more traditional top 40 pop/EDM; this sounds like the next logical step after her Talking Heads-sampling critical triumph/commercial flop from a couple years ago. Then you realize that Ian Kirkpatrick produced both this and "Bad Liar," along with Dua Lipa's superb new single, and it makes more sense. Now, how do we keep Gomez in this lane and away from losers like Kygo? [7]
William John: There's an explosive song hiding in here, and you can glimpse it occasionally -- in the flash of spidery synth during the first chorus, or at the very end where it all suddenly coalesces, as if a river has turned a bend and unexpectedly encountered the ocean. But it's shielded by muffles and hums, the curse of the anti-chorus, and the kind of frustrating restraint that, for me at least, plagued "Bad Liar". [5]
Katherine St Asaph: Selena Gomez's musical style, primarily Julia Michaels-written wallflowercore, hasn't much resembled a brash, confident kiss-off since "Come and Get It," let alone a song about a relationship between two people "a little too wild for each other." So how does she pull off one of those songs when her recent tabloid narrative breakup calls for it? By removing herself as much as possible. Most obviously, "Look At Her Now" is in third person, creating the same distancing effect as "This Is What You Came For": a song less about getting over someone than gazing, awed, at a girl who has. (So make of that what you will.) Michaels' lyric skims over the drama and past the infidelities -- the second verse, in its "an incident happened, neither good nor bad"-ness, sounds kind of like carefully phrased PR from a politician caught in an affair. Gomez's vocal does the same, emoting only intermittently and swallowing lines you might expect not to be swallowed, like "oh God, when she found out!" (To be fair, the cause may be the vocal comping being... noticeable.) The confidence is delivered by other voices, literally: samples of a child's bratty taunts, some chopped, wordless (and uncredited, obviously) toasting. Gomez is trying to have it both ways: writing a confessional, singer-songwriterly track that's still EDM- and R&B-adjacent, even if it means smothering a conversational vocal in so much processing and embellishment it no longer sounds conversational, or turning over the whole chorus to anonymous somebodies-else. Still, if dreary piano ballads have a low ceiling, wistful pop songs have a high floor. [6]
Oliver Maier: The third-person narration and Gomez's hushed, reverential delivery on the verses imply some kind of profundity that the mindless, irritating anti-chorus seems hell-bent on rebuffing. Maybe that's the point, by some galaxy-brain rationale. [3]
Natasha Genet Avery: I've always staunchly defended Selena Gomez, insisting that what she lacks in talent, she makes up for with excellent taste. After hearing these "mm-mms," I guess I'll see myself out. [3]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: God bless Selena Gomez for taking words thrown together in a blender and singing them with such bluster and joy that you don't have time to think about how ridiculous they are: "Once again, I'm yours in fractions," "You and me bleed the same light," "I'm slipping down a chain reaction,""Just like the Battle of Troy, there's nothing subtle here," "I've been running through the jungle, I've been running with the wolves," "Syncopate my skin to your heart beating," "Metaphorical gin and juice," "Bowery/Whiskey neat," "You are the thunder and I am the lightning," "Your lies are bullets, your mouth's a gun," "Let the chemicals do its stuff til the energy is too much," "Taki taki," pretty much every word of "Fetish." When Selena released a new dance track, I had my fingers crossed that I might get a shiny new toy, and boy, oh boy, did she not disappoint. "MM-MM-MM-MM-MM-MM-MM-MM...WOW" is everything I could have wanted it to be and more. She's gone post-verbal, folks! [9]
Alex Clifton: I thought the "mm-mm-mm" chorus was a cop-out the first time I heard it, but it fulfills the same function as the "ba-de-yas" of "September" -- words aren't necessary when you've got a song like this. It's deservedly smug and dismissive, perfect for deflecting any shards of bad memories from the past from her current happiness. If "Lose You to Love Me" was Selena at her most vulnerable, then "Look At Her Now" builds her back up into being the dance-queen badass that I always knew she was, but with the confidence to match. [7]
Jackie Powell: Ian Kirkpatrick's Jackson Pollock-style overdubbing of Gomez's and Michaels' vocalizations during the chorus places the listener dancing in the club rather than crying, and the heavy bass synth loop on the bridge adds color that complements the vocal brightness of "she knows she'll find love." The subject matter is a blatant follow-up to the introspective "Lose You to Love Me," but the wise writing from Julia Michaels and Tranter adds substance. This is the next stage of grief. Is it acceptance? I'm not sure. But the emotional snapshot is realistic and relatable. The couplet I'm drawn to the most is in verse two, when Gomez chants "What a thing to be human/Made her more of a woman" with the utmost conviction. The way she talk-sings the word "woman" is alluring but also so sanguine. In the Sophie Muller-directed visual, it's almost as if Gomez is channeling her inner Diana Prince in the1984 Wonder Woman poster; a blast of color coupled with a metallic outfit screams Amazonian energy. Apparently this is a track for her "ride-or-dies," which I assume would include Michaels. I mean, who wouldn't want to see them as Amazon goddesses? You must be related to Ares if you don't. [7]

blog entry #4 -- astoria & m a n i a
i don’t know if every music lover remembers the first band or artist they really loved - and i don’t mean “loved” like genuinely appreciated their music or related to their lyrics or anything; i mean cringey, young fangirl/fanboy, major-crush-on-at-least-one-member-of-the-band “loved”. i feel like for those who remember that time, they either still love the band to pieces or look back on those days with horror and wonder how the hell they chose that band to obsess over. thankfully for me, it’s the former - my first major fangirl band was marianas trench, a relatively well-known pop punk and symphonic rock band (and now with some cool 80s pop-funk influences) from vancouver, canada.
when i was about eleven or twelve, i discovered their song “cross my heart”, and immediately fell in love. i was never into taylor swift, katy perry, or any of the major pop artists of that time, and as a young guitar player myself, marianas trench’s guitar-driven, punk rock sound twisted into pop tracks through catchy drumbeats and radio music harmonies instantly appealed to me. bit by bit, i discovered more of their tracks, notably from their album “masterpiece theatre”, as that was the one out at the time. “ever after”, their third studio album, came out right as my fangirl obsession really began.
spotify and similar apps not really existing at the time, i had to be careful with my money, and my parents really monitored the music i purchased, and so i played it safe and only bought my three favourite tracks on itunes, not wanting to accidentally waste any money; “cross my heart”, “all to myself”, and “celebrity status”, all from “masterpiece theatre”. to discover more of their music, i remember typing their name into the youtube search bar, and then trying every single letter of the alphabet afterwards to find a song title that i hadn’t seen before - i actually discovered a lot of music like that, not just from marianas trench.
anyways, as i became more obsessed, i started watching interviews, acoustic or live versions of songs, and funny clips and music video bloopers all over youtube, and i have to say; for my age and maturity level at the time, i could not have found a better “introductory” band into the vast world of bands and fangirling. marianas trench were funny but never obscenely rude, they were largely unproblematic and drama-free within the music world, their music evolved towards a more pop-funk and symphonic sound but they never forgot their pop punk and rock roots, and their lyrics were always intriguing but not too dark (with the exception of their first album “fix me” and the occasional tracks on the other three albums). all of these things are still 100% true about them. bottom line, they were an awesome band for me to discover at the time, and are still what i’d describe as a model band to this day. they’ve always been so good.
what i really wanted to say (after this unnecessarily long intro) is that musically, they are still an excellent band nowadays. as a huge fan of their first three albums (especially “masterpiece theatre”, when their symphonic rock drift began - i loved the big productions and mash-ups), i didn’t pay much mind to their fourth album “astoria”. i heard of its release and listened to the first single that was put out beforehand, which was “here’s to all the zeroes” (which they actually didn’t even end up putting on the album since it didn’t fit with the vibe of it), and i really didn’t like it - i felt like it was a bit too pop and losing the originality for which i loved them. i had always loved that they stuck true to who they were and didn’t try to change themselves to get more listeners outside of canada.
so, when they released that song, i felt like they might lose themselves in the world of common radio pop, so i didn’t look into “astoria” at all when it came out. but yesterday, as i was feeling low and looking to listen to some of their older, darker tracks, i saw the “astoria” album cover go by on my phone, and i guess i just thought “yeah why not?”. the first track immediately caught my interest, as it reminded me of the “masterpiece theatre i, ii & iii” tracks from their second album, as well as “ever after” and “no place like home” from their third album (these were often longer than the other songs, and incorporated lyrics for all of the songs from the album within a huge, dramatic, overproduced track - if you’ve taken a peak at my favourite albums, many of them are alternative, unique, and deliberately overproduced records, which i love and almost always have).
all this to say - the rest of the album was awesome. i was very impressed with the filler tracks as well as the final song “end of an era”, among all the other great songs. original lyrics, great emotion, good guitar, and unique, typical trench vocal and string arrangements - essentially, everything that a long-time, dedicated marianas trench fan could ask for.
apart from the fact that i needed to rant somewhere about and emphasize how good “astoria” and marianas trench are, i also wanted to say this: trust the bands you love. you started loving them for a reason; because they made good music time after time. even if their style changed, if they lost a member, disbanded for a while, or switched genres completely, you will be able to find that thing that drew you to them initially in all of their music, i promise. you just need to come in with an open mind.
good fans don’t have to like everything that their favourite artists or bands make, but in my opinion, good fans can not only root for the band’s changes and support their road to self-discovery as artists by not hating on them and asking for the “old them” back, but can also come to identify the reasons for which they loved the band initially and find these aspects in all of their music. for example, at the core, i was drawn to marianas trench because of josh ramsay’s unique voice, the band’s song arrangements and harmonies, poppy guitar riffs and drum beats, originality, and the fact that they are a canadian band - ultimately, all of this can be found in anything that marianas trench has ever released, even the songs that aren’t as popular among the fans. i guess this is supposed to be some kind of optimistic view on band evolution… i don’t know to be honest.
i think i also kind of wrote this in connection to fall out boy’s “m a n i a” album coming out in less than two weeks. a lot of longtime fans are worried that this one is going to be very different (too different) from other things that the band has made, and i guess they’re worried that they won’t like it or something.
i understand. in all honesty, i’m always worried that i won’t like an album when one of my favourite bands releases it - fuck, i was equally excited as i was terrified when imagine dragons released “evolve”. but i trusted them to make good music no matter what, and though the album was different from “night visions” and “smoke + mirrors”, how could i expect it not to be? and yet, it was absolutely incredible nonetheless.
hence, i’m really going to try and adopt an optimistic attitude for “m a n i a”, because i trust fall out boy. they have proven time and time again (and despite a five year break) that they can produce incredible music. yes, it will be different. maybe it’ll drift away from “american beauty/american psycho” and back towards some of their older things - maybe it won’t. maybe it will be something totally different, which is kind of what i’m hoping for. the songs released so far seem to be drifting towards a bit of an alternative pop and even edm inspired direction in the case of “young & menace” (which would be a dream come true for an alternative music lover like me), but hey, we’ll see. i trust fall out boy.
either way, i sure as hell won’t keep myself from listening to “m a n i a” for two years like i did marianas trench’s “astoria”, because as i’ve seen, i’d likely miss out big time. so sorry about this long ass post on your dash by the way (i get a little carried away sometimes yikes i’m sorry, i love talking about music way too much).
