How do you define a non-replica?

So, a replica is a production that's licensed by RUG (= Really Useful Group = ALW's company) to perform CATS with full official regalia: that is, they are allowed to use Gillian Lynne's choreo and Napier's designs and so on, but they are also obliged to follow the official rules for whatever a current official production is meant to do.

However. 'Current' here means 'current at the time the licence was issued'.

Shiki (Japan) is replica in that it's fully licensed from RUG. But since they started in 1983 and have followed their own design path since then (with occasional external influences from more Western productions), they are actually more different from more modern replica productions than some modern non-replicas.

Similarly (though more recently), the Oasis production got its licence just before the UK and US revivals, and that licence is apparently still current, so it preserves some pre-revival performance traditions (and is, so far, immune to the new rules about makeup that came in with the new international and asia tours).

Other replica productions of the 80s and 90s (like OG Vienna, Amsterdam/Paris, Zurich/Euro, Hamburg) also developed their own traditions - and the Australasian traditions (starting in the late 1990s) persisted until the 2014 asia tour.

And that's a pertinent example: the australasian productions were not a continual production, so they had to renew their license for each 'season' (2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2022, etc). So they reflect the vagaries of ALW's revival trends, even while their production company (and often a lot of their cast) stay the same.

A non-replica, otoh, may be influenced by the traditional/replica productions, but they might get into trouble if their designs and choreo are too recognisable. For example, the 2013 and 2018 mexico revivals were a) based on the original Latin American productions in the 1990s - some of the cast and production team returned to lead the designs - and b) in the case of 2018, they were adapted to include elements of hte Broadway revival.

The end result was something that's much more recongisable as an extra-saturated version of Gillian/Napier's production, but. Though I don't know the terms of their contract. I know that the fact that they had that much of the original production gave them less freedom in terms of their contract, and that the 2018 production was obliged to close down in preparation for the release of teh 2019 film.

I would say that's symptomatic of ALW/RUG's increasing pedantic control over the appearance of The Brand of CATS and resistance to having any alternative versiosn around, but. That attitude isn't really new. According to some conversations I've had with old CATS alumni, 'omg ur doing ur own thing??? STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!!!' was basically the reason that the Hamburg production (1986–2001) was closed down.

and RUG's insistence on THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE PRODUCTION comes in waves: most of the original productions and their various traditions were shut down in the late 90s and early 00s, and then, after regional US productions started to burgeon in the late 00s and on until the revivals, they cracked down on non-replicas again in the wake of the European and Broadway revivals.

tl;dr the definition of non-replica is about licensing and degree of freedom/control, with originality as a secondary consideration.

Karen Lorene Godshall Hicks passed into eternity on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. She was born May 22, 1949, in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. At the time of her passing, she resided in Justin, TX.

Psalm 37:23 declares that a person's steps are "ordered by the Lord." Certainly, this was true of her well-spent 72 years.

Karen grew up in Telford, PA. In grade and middle school, she won numerous singing and athletic events, as well as competing on the Souderton Swim and Diving Team. As a Souderton High School beauty, she was especially known for her sewing and cooking prowess. She received her high school's Crisco Award for Outstanding Student in Home Economics, the Junior Women's Clothing Contest Winner, and Membership on the prestigious McCall's Magazine National Sorority of the Teen Fashion Board. She graduated with honors in 1967.

She attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, from 1967 to 1971, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education and a minor in science. While there she met Darryl Hicks, a student from Oklahoma (He has often said, "We met in a psychology class. She made an A+, and I made a C, which pretty much explains a lot!) They married in Sellersville, PA, on August 14, 1971.

During the next years, Karen and Darryl taught school (Big Oak Christian Academy near Biscoe, NC; and Temple Christian School in Rockingham, NC). For eight years she was a featured singer with The Servants and The Darryl Hicks Trio, touring extensively across the United States, recording four albums, and featured in churches, auditoriums, music festivals and national television programs. They appeared in concert with numerous major artists. Three songs featuring her solos hit numerous regional and national radio charts, and were featured in The Singing News (Southern Gospel music's equivalent of Billboard Magazine).

When they moved to Charlotte, NC, Karen continued teaching at Heritage Academy near Fort Mill, SC, while Darryl began a new career as author and television writer/producer. She also attended Winthrop University Graduate School in Rock Hill, SC.

Major changes came when the couple started a family with the arrival of daughter Charnee and son David. Eventual career moves to High Point, NC, Galveston, TX and the DFW area of Texas saw the family tree flourish with seven grandchildren. Karen's teaching career continued in Texas until she retired in 2004 to travel with Darryl and to enjoy her children, grandchildren, cats and original jewelry designs.

From 1983-2018 she served as an advisor and contributor on a variety of nutrition and recipe books for noted authors and publishers, and from 2010-2020 she hosted Karen's Kitchen, a popular internet recipe and back-story feature.

She was known in jewelry, fashion and shopping circles as "The Purple Lady" for her stylish fondness for wearing clothing and accessories in that color.

For several years she also enjoyed being a member of two Red Hat Society chapters and was immortalized in the song, "Red Hat Woman," performed at the society's 2009 international convention in Dallas, Texas.

During 2021, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Karen is predeceased by her mother, Mary (Nase) Allebach, her father, Harold Allebach, her maternal grandparents, Herbert and Olivia (Price) Nase, paternal grandparents, Ellis and Mabel (Schurr) Godshall, and parents-in-law Gifford and Mabel (Sledge) Hicks.

Left to carry forward her notable legacy are her husband of 50 years, Darryl Hicks, daughter Charnee (James) Barker, son David Hicks, sister and brother-in-law Sharon (Sheri) and Michael Curry, seven grandchildren -- Daniel Hicks, Richard Bennington, Adam Hooper, Kevin Hooper, Taylor Moreno, Dylan Hicks, and Jacob Hicks, as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

Psalm 116:15 declares, "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." Certainly this is now true for Karen Lorene Godshall Hicks as the celebration of her home-going continues among the golden mansions and the heavenly throne room, the inheritance of every believer, to which Karen looked forward many times as she read or heard John 14.

And while her family mourns the unthinkable loss of this remarkable, talented and beloved woman, we also celebrate her reunion in heaven with the Lord Jesus whom she served so faithfully, even as we cherish her memory and strive to fulfill the noteworthy heritage she left us to follow!

A Celebration of Karen's Life will be held Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the First Baptist Church Youth-Fellowship Hall, 101 South Highway TX-156, Ponder, TX 76259. Dress is casual., but you are welcome to wear something purple as a tribute to the Karen's favorite color. A lunch buffet will be provided beginning at Noon, with the memorial to take place afterward. A time of dessert, coffee, tea and fellowship will follow the service. To allow the family to prepare for food and seating, please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to attend (and how many will be in your party). Misto Categories 3: Some Revisions

1. Because Shy Misto has a character arc and isn’t always shy, I’ve renamed Shy Misto and Character Arc Misto.

Shy>Coming of Age (The first type of Misto to have a coming of age arc. Since it came first, it should get the credit.)

Character Arc>Child Prodigy (Based on Jacob Brent’s description of the character, since was probably either the first or second person to play the role this way. Child Prodigy is separated from Coming of Age by increased confidence. He knows he’s special and is proud of his skills, but he’s still a bit of a mess in other ways. Because of his unique successes, he handles failure poorly.)

2. Tugger’s BF has been merged with Showman, because he’s basically Showman with fewer spotlight moments. Also, Tugger’s BF was basically a category of one.

3. A new category has also been added: Munk’s Apprentice.

To avoid confusion with Munk’s Assistant, this one might be renamed in the future.

Munk’s Assistant is the newest form of Misto, more common in shows from after the original London production ended in 2002. He’s a hybrid of Munk’s Assistant and Child Prodigy. Like Child Prodigy, he is a young adult, just coming of age. But, he’s a bit more mature and stable. He stays close to Munk and helps him manage things, sometimes acting like a bit of a teacher’s pet. When Grizabella appears, he’s either curious, not knowing who she is, or he tries to get rid of her on Munk’s behalf. Sometimes he doesn’t do anything of note in the scene at all.

Basically, Munk’s Assistant is an adult on equal footing with Munkustrap who helps him manage things. Alonzo assists Munk in protecting the tribe while Misto assists him in organizing it.

Munk’s Apprentice has a similar role to Munk’s Assistant, but he’s younger. He looks up to Munk as a mentor figure. Some productions might’ve aged Alonzo down to put him in a similar position to Misto. Munk’s Apprentice wants to be some sort of leader, but he’s still learning.

Basically, Misto has the same arc that Munk gets when aged down, but with a different coming of age moment.

History, I Think:

Before the release of the VHS, most international productions were completely Broadway-based. The VHS, a mostly London-based hybrid of various productions, led to people around the world seeing a more London-based show and becoming invested in them.

In 2000, Cats closed on Broadway, while the London production was still going. It gained a bit of an upper hand in influence until it closed in 2002.

After the end of the London production, the third UK Tour started up. The fifth US Tour started after Broadway closed, becoming one of the only major Broadway-based productions of the era. For the new UK Tour, ALW put together a new arrangement of the show, mostly London-based. This is when Firebird was cut from the Jellicle Ball and the Grizabella Reprise was cut. This arrangement took on an official status, so most replica productions worked off of it. With an official arrangement like this, replica productions became less diverse and became almost exclusively London-based.

Up until this point, Munk’s Assistant was the only type of Misto created in London:

Showman Misto was the original Broadway rewrite of the character.

Vague and Aloof Misto is the silent version that Vienna used.

Coming of Age Misto came from Paris.

Child Prodigy Misto was a combination of Broadway Showman with Coming of Age Misto.

So, now that London-based shows were in, London-based Mistos were in. Madrid straight-up used an original Munk’s Assistant Misto in 2003, very shortly after the new arrangement came out.

But, the London production had actually adopted aspects of the Broadway production throughout its run. Gumbie Cat was sung by Munkustrap instead of Mistoffelees, the Vienna/Broadway version of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer had been adopted. While some international productions tried to use these elements, they never really caught on, though Japan kept the London arrangement of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer until 2018, and the 2019 Film used it. These Broadway elements were adopted into the 2003 UK Tour arrangement. That had already happened by the time the London production closed.

So, Munk’s Assistant Misto was the most purely London Misto, but he also wasn’t very popular. In general, the London-based elements that were on the VHS were popular (Black and white Alonzo, Plato dancing with Victoria, Munkustrap taking most of the Macavity Fight), but the ones that weren’t were not.

By bringing in the Broadway Misto when the VHS was recorded, it ended up with a Child Prodigy Misto. With both London and Broadway closed, this was the Misto everyone thought about when they thought of the character. Child Prodigy had completely replaced Showman as the Broadway Misto. Some of the fifth US Tour Mistos fit that profile, as well as some later Hamburg Mistos. It varied between cast changes, but elements of this version of the character were in.

But, London-based productions added London influences back into the character, keeping a lot of elements of Child Prodigy Misto, but giving him the Munk’s Assistant Misto’s role in keeping the tribe organized. Munk’s Apprentice Misto was born here.

I don’t know which production or which actor used this version first, only that it caught on shortly after 2003. It was there by 2005 in the Moscow production. Mark John Richardson started playing the role this way so it traveled into multiple German tours and a Dutch tour. I’m not sure about the third UK Tour, but it appeared in the fourth, a decade later.

The various revivals have been more mixed in their Misto portrayals, but Munk’s Apprentice remains common.

Cat / Kara / Lena Fic Recs

In this fanfiction recommendation I have collected my two favorite Kara Danvers/Cat Grant (SuperCat) and my four favorite Kara Danvers/Cat Grant/Lena Luthor (SuperCarp?, SuperCatCorp) stories and a complicated story that I love that is mostly Cat Grant/Lena Luthor (read the full rec).

SuperCat was one of the most popular ships in season one and continues to be popular. The chemistry between both Kara and Cat and Kara and Lena is undeniable and while Cat and Lena never met in canon, this has never stopped anyone from shipping them in a polyamorous relationship with Kara. While not hugely popular, there is a decent number of fics on AO3.

Cat/Lena is a rarepair but in some of the polyamorous stories Cat and Lena are in a relationship first.

The first two fics are by favorites. They have a very different dynamics and settings:

With Love's Light Wings is an AU set post season 2 in which Cat returns to National City. Between Two Mountains is set around season 5 (and diverges from canon then) and in this story Lena left National City, heartbroken because of Kara’s betrayal. Instead of the stupid things she did in canon, she does something much more sensible: she escapes to her ski resort.

Mature; smut with story

Lena runs off to her Metropolis ski resort to put Kara out of her mind. Across the globe, Cat's grueling schedule is no longer working to distract her from where she really wants to be, and as luck would have it, Carter has found the perfect vacation spot in Metropolis. But he needs a babysitter while on the slopes. Since Kara's powers are fritzing while she nurses her own despair, a vacation away from the demands of National City would be just the thing.

This story starts with a very hurt Lena and a fascinating look back on Cat and Kara's past, told from Cat's perspective. Cat and Lena meet for the first time and start an affair (or more?) before Kara can start her holiday.

I enjoyed this wonderful, very well written story. It is funny, witty, smutty and pretty much angst free. I especially loved Cat and Lena’s banter.

Lena laughed and leaned back in her seat. “I seem to recall it saying something about not destroying your city, your hero, and your assistant. I don’t really remember much of a ‘thank you,’ however.”

Three women, each with their own sets of walls, find that they need each other to bring them down. Set about two years on from current S2 canon, Kara is a more seasoned reporter, more comfortable and mature. Her friendship with Lena Luthor has long teetered on the edge of becoming something more, but her lingering hangup on Cat Grant has kept it from even starting.

Lena Luthor is a lonely woman with ESP that she developed as a teenager after an accident in her brother's lab. The irony is bitter; she's subjected to everyone's feelings, like it or not, yet struggles to ever share her own. Cat Grant returns to National City to resume her role at CatCo, despite her own unresolved feelings for Kara, and things become complicated for all three of them as they realize that what they need is something different from what they ever thought or expected.

This is an AU, although the premise of the story only really diverges from canon of Season 1 and early season 2 in Lena's powers and that Lena and Cat meet. After that, it obviously diverges more from canon.

I am always a bit skeptical when Lena gets (super)powers in a fic, but my concerns were unfounded. This is a great and beautifully written story.

She couldn’t stand the wistful look on Cat’s face, so she kissed her again, so lightly, so carefully, imagining her lips and tongue as a butterfly coming to rest on Cat’s mouth.

What is really different in this story, is that Cat and Lena are together, have been married for years. I love their interaction. And their jealously and protectiveness for Kara. Cat and Lena are drawn to Kara, but they are afraid to start anything.

There is smut in the last chapters, but considering the tags, this story is really not that kinky. I enjoyed this well written story.

Human disasters making a mess of things.

I have written about this story before, but I have expanded on my notes here.

Cat cheats on Kara with Lena (who is in a relationship with Veronica). Things get messy and complicated.

None of these are really my favorite ships and this is not something I knew I wanted, but I am mesmerized by this story. It is beautiful and so well written. It is told from Cats and Lena’s POV.

If you are looking for angst free, fluffy, and the usual Supergirl pairings, then this fic is not for you. But if you are open for an unexpected, bittersweet tour de force with a slightly unconventional happy ending, then definitely give this one a try.

Kara is asexual in this story, but while she has a role in this story, she is not the main protagonist. This is also not a happy story and while there is hope and some new beginnings, this is mostly a story about infidelity and the end of relationships.

While it is (also) a story about Kara and Cat falling in love, it is probably more a fic about two people overcoming the first big crisis of their relationship.

While the point of view switches between Kara and Cat, I feel this is more a Cat than a Kara story, that Cat is the main protagonist.

While strictly speaking you don't need to know anything about the Supergirl TV show to enjoy this story you will probably enjoy it more if you do know it - in particular Season 1. I liked that many characters are featured and have small supporting roles: Hank, Alex, Winn, James (even Mon-El has a few scenes and gets what he deserves ;-) and especially Lena, Lucy, Astra and Sam - they are all written lovingly and their roles in the story nicely fit with their characters.

It is very well written and perfectly edited and very fast paced. I think it is mostly due to the quality of the writing that I liked this story a lot, even though I am not the biggest SuperCat shipper.

Notes:

This story has no relation to the short lived TV show of the same name (2005, with Gena Davies) that I actually enjoyed.

That's how it began.

Only it's not Kara who steps out on the red carpet, but Supergirl. As they continue with the public deception, chaos erupts around them: battles fought, lives lost, enemies old and new. Somewhere in there Kara and Cat have to deal with what happens when pretend feelings become all too real, along with the additional complications from Superman and both of the sisters Lane.

Ultimately, Kara has to find a way to make her ever-changing life workable. Can she do that while keeping Cat, her secret identity, and her family intact?

I am usually not that much into SuperCat but this story’s summery caught my eye. The premise is interesting, the power dynamics is quite intriguing and there is hot sex. The story goes far beyond the typical fake dating trope and is mostly about Kara. I was fascinated by her development, especially in the aspect of Kara’s vs Supergirl’s identity. This story drives this into a direction that is pretty uncommon in fics.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (by Hank Green) -- Part 1

Hello friends! I’m so sorry it’s been a while -- life has just been weird lately, and I’ve been super tired, and the time never felt right, and I had so much to say, and and and I don’t know.

But I’m here now XD

I had interest expressed for both Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce and An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green, and I think Wild Magic might have technically won but I just wasn’t feeling it for some reason. Maybe I had too many animals in my house already (I was catsitting for my friend’s two cats, who didn’t much like our two cats or our dog) and it was too overwhelming. But in the interests of getting my ass in gear and getting back into the reading saddle, I’m going to go ahead with An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. I’ll probably put Wild Magic back in contention for our next vote, though!

I’m going to split this intro into two posts (you can read the second post here), because a lot of what I want to talk about is just general celebrity culture and why I think Hank was perfect to write this book. It’s not specifically focused on AART itself, and while it’s relevant, it quickly swelled to be quite long and I didn’t want to scare folks off with the size of the intro post haha. This post will try to stay focused on the book and what I’m looking forward to.

So. An Absolutely Remarble Thing. This book fascinated me. It hit so many of my favourite vibes, and did it so well. April May is funny and clever, but she’s also human and complicated and sometimes selfish or stupid. Miranda is so smart and pretty and I’m very gay for her. The puzzles are fun and creative and interesting and exciting. And then the themes are spot on -- celebrity, media, persona, humanity, morality... and then some aliens, robots, and bisexuals mixed in as a treat.

First up: April May. She’s amazing. I already said that, but it’s true. I have rarely encountered a character like her, where I like her so much and yet -- I’m very aware that she’s not a very good person. Not in an antagonist way, she’s very much the protagonist, and I think she’s written to be liked. But she’s also written to be deeply, deeply flawed. And it’s interesting to hold space for both of those, and to be reminded that they can coexist.

This book also asks a lot of questions about what it means to be a person, what it means to be a good person. Those questions don’t have simple answers, and we’re all out here just doing our best. Most people think they’re good people. Including people who we think are bad people. Learning how to engage with those people (or when to avoid them) is something that we’re all trying to find our own ways of dealing with. It’s hard, and sometimes it’s hateful, but we keep trying.

And honestly, I think this book is at its core incredibly optimistic about humanity. There are people who want to sow fear or division or hatred, who want to undermine others or just cash in for themselves, but in the background of all of it -- this story is a story of community. Of millions (or even billions) of people around the world, coming together to work for something more than themselves. And there’s no real reason to, no reward they know of -- they just want to. They want to be a part of something more. They want to find the answers, just for the sake of answers. For the sake of doing it. I don’t know if that quite fits the definition of altruism, but it’s close. And it’s pretty damn miraculous.

Straying away from the story itself, I think another more unique reason I enjoyed this book so much was because of the time in my life it arrived at. It came out in the fall of 2018, and I figured out for sure that I was panromantic (or at least, romantically interested in women, exact labels are squishy) in the spring of 2018. I was surprised how much that affected my experience of a lot of media, but it’s just so fun and freeing to point at a movie actor or a book character and say “god I’m gay.” Like, I’d absolutely done similar things in the past of saying “she’s so pretty” or “I love that character/actress,” but there’s something so simple and satisfying about “I’m gay” that encompasses a different vibe, and when I wasn’t second-guessing my sexuality or worrying that I was intruding on queer/sapphic culture -- movies and books and TV shows and life just got better. Which is a long-winded way of saying that I have a major crush on Miranda and can I please date her.

Also I went on a spontaneous international road trip to Ohio with two of my best friends (one of whom I was secretly in love with and am now dating) for the book tour, so that’s also a nice memory I specifically have attached to this book.

I think that’s most of the things I had to talk about with this book, so I’ll wrap things up here.
