The Wheel of the Year: Beltane
Tumblr media
Photo de CHUTTERSNAP sur Unsplash
☽🔮☾🕯🃏🌕🕸✨🍃🍄🧿🌙✩ 🪄📚
May 1st marks Beltane on the wheel of the year (at least, in the northern hemisphere. In the southern one, it is celebrated in the 1st November). This celebration comes right after Ostara and before Litha. Beltane is one of the less well known festivities because other religions, because even if Christianity integrated it into their story they didn't link it to any "religious events" so Beltane stayed a minor festival, known as "May Day" and celebrated in areas of celtic or christian tradition.
Beltane celebrates life, fullness and lushness. What this festival highlights is spring at its peak, right in ists middle, and the impending return of summer. In Ireland and other countries of Celtic tradition this festival celebrates the first of summer ! As such, this festival is a time to make merry, to let loose and enjoy nature's beauty in its fullest and at its most charming ! As it is to be expected the main theme of this festival is exhuberance, excess and fertility. In antiquity, it was customary to partake in different fertility rituals, such as lighting two fires and having your cattle pass through, dances and the traditional May Pole (where girls would hold a ribbon attached to a massive pole in the middle of the field, and then dance around it, braiding the ribbons in different patterns). While most of this traditions are long gone, lighting fires, dancing and merrymaking are still important parts of this festival ! In its origin, Beltane celebrated the day where cattle could be again be brought to pastures, as well as the Earth's natural rythms. In certain traditions such as wicca, this festival is also used to celebrate fertility gods (such as Cernnunos or Belenus) or the moment where the feminine and masculine energies of nature are at its strongest, and at their most attractive ! The name Beltane might come from Celtic, meaning "bright fire", or "the fires of Bel", referring to Belenus. This is a good moment to rejoice and be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us, to ask nature or any deities we worship to bless us, to enjoy being ourselves, alive in this crazy world and to partake and share joy with our loved ones. Beltane is a moment of excess, of celebration and of sensual pleasures: eating and drinking well, spending a good time with friend and enjoying the wealth of gifts that nature has in store for us ! This festival honours is associated with the maiden aspect of the Goddess (in the shape of a sensual maiden that will soon become a mother). It celebrates different Gods, mostly those related to exhuberance, energy (specially virile energy), fertility and lust: Cernunnos, Belenus, Father Nature, Apollo, Baal... but plenty of feminine godesses linked to fertility, sensuality or motherhood: Mother Nature, Venus, Ceres... Likewise, this day brings up lush, exhuberant and lively associations: plenty of phallic or yonic imagery, the Sun, fires, holy wells or springs, the maypole, flowers, greenery, merrymaking... It is for this reason that handfasting and marriages were traditionally celebrated during this festival as well ! There are plenty of traditions associated with Beltane, but not all of them might be reasonable for the modern witch living in a metropolitan city. For example, you could join a maypole dance if you were so lucky as to find one. You could also light a bonfire if you had the room and the permission of your local council. If you have cattle, definitely take them out to graze. If you have a partner or partners, by all means practice fertility or sensuality rituals as long as you have their consent. Here are some other ways to celebrate that might be more doable to witches that do not live in an Irish cottage in the XVIIth century:
-Feast: While Ostara was a good time for fasting Beltane is a good time for feasting. Today is not the time to count calories ! Enjoy plentiful, good food by yourself or in the company of your loved ones. A picnic under the Sun, next to a river or a barbeque would be particularly fitting ! Some foods particularly associated with Beltane might be any sort of animal products, fruits (particularly those associated with sexuality and sensuality), grains such as oats, wheat or barley, spices (specially hot spices, as they are associated with fire and the Sun) and of course, alcoholic drinks (or their non-alcoholic version if you don't drink). -Dance: Dance has always been associated with sensuality and merrymaking, to the point that certain cultures used to frown upon it. If you want to enjoy Beltane to the max let loose and dance: outside or inside, by yourself or with others, to any kind of music... just dance your heart out and take this moment to truly connect with yourself, your body and enjoy being alive as much as you can ! -"Bonfire": No big bonfire in your area ? No room to make your own ? No problem. Microdose bonfires with a barbeque, or light candles if you can. The fire will still represent and honour the Sun just as much as with a big bonfire ! -Gather flowers: In Celtic tradition it was popular to collect and decorate with yellow flowers, as they were used to represent the Sun. Sunflowers are particularly fitting, but dandelions and narcissus are also very good. You could even make dandelion wine, dandelion lemonade or syrup with the flowers you pick up !
-Wear flower crowns: As Beltane is heavily associated with lushness and fertility flowers are another good image that they link to. Wear flowers in your dress, gather flowers or wear flower crowns to celebrate your own body, sensuality and sexuality. -Fertility or sensuality rituals: Performing rituals is a good way to celebrate this festivity, as it was traditional in antiquity. Of course, fertility, sensuality and sexuality rituals are the most fitting for this season but you can also do rituals honouring nature or honouring the deities related to this festival. -May pole: No maypole where you live ? Not an issue: Create your own with a twig or a lollipop stick, ribbons and perhaps a crystal to top in off. You probably won't be able to dance while braiding it, but you can still jam to some tunes as you do so ! -Prepare a May basket: In antiquity people would often prepare little baskets full of flowers or different goodies for their loved ones and friends. Share the joy and merrymaking by making a little basket filled with flowers and treats, be it for yourself or for your friends. -Decorate your altar: As with every festivity now would be a great time to deck your altar in the colours of the season and include some fitting decorations. If you aren't shy about sexuality, images of the God and Goddess might be good options, and so would be phallic or yonic symbols. Other options might be flowers, crystals, ribbons or objects that represent the Sun.
Colours associated with Beltane: Red, yellow, orange, white, green, gold Crystals associated with Beltane: Garnet, carnelian, tiger's eye Food associated with Beltane: Meat, dairy, eggs, honey, grains, fruits,  alcoholic drinks.

Play it as it lays : Hollywood and the absence of choice. (Spoilers.)
TW: Abortion, Medical Trauma, Abuse of Power.
I’m a big fan of Lana Del Rey, so much so I got my first tattoo dedicated to her. Her album “Born To Die” has influenced the female-pop world, inspiring other artists like Taylor swift and Halsey. She is the one who interested me in the romanticization of hollywood. It’s not something I knew much about, as I am not a big movie or TV show watcher. Unfortunately I can’t spend my whole time writing about Lana Del Rey and my love for her albums, she is an important part of my critical reading journey. I had already read classics before (Frankenstein, Giovanni’s Room, Jane Eyre.) I had not ventured too far from what I found comfortable. I’ve just started Lolita by Vladymir Nabokov after reading an article where she credited it as one of her favourite books. The novel is often misunderstood (Even by Lana herself in her song titled ‘Lolita’) It has opened my eyes on the meaning and importance of reading critically and not just for fun. Although I still read the sappy and all around cheesy love stories, because why not?
I mostly read and consume media in much smaller quantities. (Instant gratification at its best.) Hollywood isn’t something that I've explored. And of course this excessive romanticisation of Hollywood became clear to me as something bad, I made the decision to dive deeper. There was nothing wrong with me enjoying the aesthetic that influenced Lana Del Rey’s music, but there was something wrong with ignoring it and pretending to not understand it.
Play it as lays is a novel written by Joan Didion. It's a fiction novel set in the 1960’s following the character Maria Wyeth. She is thirty-one years old. She is married to a film director in hollywood. Maria (Pronounced: Mar-I-Ah) is stuck in an endless loop of depression. Her husband Carter is a power hungry man, after Carter realises she’s pregnant with her affair’s child he forces her to have an abortion to be able to continue seeing their child Kate who has a psychiatric mental health problem. Although this seems not to have a connection to hollywood it was common according to an article written in Vanity Fair titled: Classic Hollywood’s Secret: Studios Wanted Their Stars to Have Abortions. This is a fictitious version of these women's stories.
Maria struggles after this, the doctor in a horrifying graphic scene tells Maria to not cry because “This is what she wanted.” This implies choice. And this comes back to why this is also considered to be one my favourite and one of the most powerful novels i’ve ever read, it describes exactly what women have been trying to tell men around them their whole lives. The absence of choice. Choice for an abortion, Choice to leave and the Choice to live. I’ve felt trapped before, oftentimes men feel as though they are entitled to your space and this novel has enlightened me, to the women around me. It’s easy to romanticize something when wanting it so bad that you can’t truly see what you don’t want to.

It’s High Time to Ensure Supply Chain Security - Technology Org

It’s High Time to Ensure Supply Chain Security - Technology Org
The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the interconnected nature of global supply chains, and showed how a disruption in one part of the world can have global effects. In 2021, supply disruptions were cost the global economy an estimated $1.9 trillion.

An international team of researchers, including from the University of Cambridge, are calling on government agencies and national banks to support an effort to map the billions of connections in the global supply network which, among other impacts, could reduce tax evasion by as much as €130 billion annually in the European Union.
The researchers say that understanding supply networks could also improve supply security, promote objective monitoring of the green transition, and strengthen human rights compliance.
Writing in the journal Science, they emphasise that international alliances, backed by government organisations and the research community, are needed for such an understanding.
Even though most companies know their immediate trading partners, they depend on countless other relationships up and down the supply chain. A shortage anywhere in the supply network may affect suppliers, suppliers of suppliers, and so on, as well as customers and their customers’ customers.

“Supply disruptions caused an estimated loss of 2% of global GDP in 2021 – approximately $1.9 trillion – and significantly contributed to the current high inflation,” said lead author Anton Pichler from the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) in Vienna. “For a long time, it was unthinkable to analyse the global economy at the company level, let alone its complex network of supply interconnections. That is changing now.”
“Understanding supply chain interdependencies between companies, sectors, and countries is vital for many challenges, from identifying how disruptions may emerge and cascade across economies, through to monitoring carbon emissions and ensuring ethical and sustainable practice,” said co-author Professor Alexandra Brintrup from Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing.
For almost a century, only aggregated data – such as the average values of entire sectors – could be analysed. Predicting how individual company failures would affect the system was simply not possible. What happens to the economy when a specific company stops its production? What if an earthquake paralyses an entire region?
“Now, a combination of new micro-datasets, methods based in machine learning, and multiple government initiatives are creating the ability to map entire economies, which can give us the tools to answer some fundamental questions with real and timely impact,” said Brintrup.
Although the volume of data is vast – there are approximately 300 million companies worldwide, each with an average of 40 domestic suppliers, resulting in up to 13 billion supply connections – researchers can map the connections between individual companies.
Currently, value-added tax (VAT) data is the most promising option for reconstructing reliable large-scale supply networks. Countries including Spain, Hungary and Belgium use a standardised VAT collection that practically records all domestic business-to-business (b2b) transactions. With these, it’s possible to map the entire national trade of a country.
In most countries like Germany, Austria, or France, where VAT is not collected for individual b2b transactions but only accumulated over a specific period, such mapping is not possible.
“The standardised b2b collection could reduce administrative overheads for companies and would contribute substantially to tax compliance,” said co-author Christian Diem, also from CSH. Estimates suggest that VAT-related fraudulent activities in the European Union (EU) amount to €130 billion annually.
Beyond tax evasion, other global challenges also depend on the detailed knowledge of supply networks.
“For individual companies, it’s nearly impossible to ensure that all trading partners, their suppliers, and their suppliers’ suppliers operate in an environmentally friendly way and in compliance with human rights,” said Pichler.
“If this were centrally documented in a gigantic network, it could be more easily ensured.”
The next step is to link trade data from different countries. Currently, the EU records trade in goods between its member states at the company level. It could lead to a comprehensive cross-border company-level network if it also included services and linked them with VAT data. According to the authors, this would represent almost 20% of the global GDP.
The European Commission laid the legal foundation by proposing ‘VAT in the Digital Age.’ “Unfortunately, this is far from being realised,” said co-author Stefan Thurner, of the Complexity Science Hub.
“So far, we do not have a single situation where the supply chain networks of any two countries have been joined and merged. This would be an essential next step.”
To create a truly international picture of supply interconnections, hundreds of datasets must be joined, analytical tools developed, an institutional framework must be created, and secure infrastructure for storing and processing enormous amounts of sensitive data.
“To advance this endeavor, a strong international alliance of various interest groups is required, including national governments, statistical offices, international organizations, central banks, the private sector, and academia,” said Thurner.
The first collaboration in science, involving authors in macroeconomics, supply chain research, and statistics, now aims to establish a foundation. The researchers hope to inspire others to join their efforts.
