too polite to do it • love-struck
chapter five of love-struck — fic navigation
Tumblr media
“Hey,” Spencer said before you could even process what was happening.
“Hi, Spencer. If this is about the case reports, I’m gonna leave everything at your desk tomorrow,” you explained, looking at your laptop’s screen, working on those said reports.
“It’s not about that.” He sounded tired and a little bit out of breath, but that's none of your business. “Can we talk?”
“Sure,” you didn’t want to sound uncertain, but your voice betrayed you. You’ve gone almost two weeks of barely any talk with him — unless it was about the case you were working on —, you were starting to lose hope about, well, everything.
After a weekend at Spencer’s apartment, comforting him regarding all the situation with his mom’s health, you were surely way beyond the walls he had built to protect himself. But the second he pushed you away, for no apparent reason, you knew you misjudged the situation. Maybe his mother was worse, and it was his right to not share more about it, but you showed you cared and were there to help him. So you took a step back and gave him space, waiting for him to reach out.
And maybe it was your worst mistake, because he settled for the work relationship all over again, not even spilling facts about your favourite tea, or the book you were reading, or the city you were going to stay for the case. You couldn’t say you felt like an old case, forgotten under piles of urgent matters, but it felt odd because, if you knew, you wouldn't have turned the status of relationship papers to Hotch a few weeks ago.
“I can hear you thinking all the way over here, Spence.” You put the laptop aside and stared at the wall.
“Sorry, I-hm, I was thinking about the best way to start this. And I don’t think there’s a good reason for what I did the last few days, so it’s best if I start with I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I pushed you aside,” his words poured from his mouth. “So, yeah, I’m sorry.”
“Ok.” You could picture him, the four green walls around him, on the other side of the city. Too distant for your liking, but maybe that was bound to happen. And everything else was nothing but a dream. “It’s ok, I get it. I just- sorry, I can’t do this right now. Can’t do this over the phone.”
“I’m downstairs,” he blunted. “But I get it if you don’t wanna see me right now. Just tell me when and where, and I’ll be there.”
“If you’re gonna break my heart, let’s just get over with it, shall we?”
“You’re wrong.”
“That you’re gonna break my heart? Of course you won’t, you’re too polite to do it, so I did it myself.” You walked to your front door, phone pressed against your ear, but already imagining the man outside, waiting.
You unlocked the door, seeing Spencer in his work clothes, the FBI badge still hung on his belt. The uneven hair and blank expression threw you in two different directions: how could he sound torn, look like he hasn't slept for ages, but still have a pretty face so hard to read?
“Hello, Spencer,” your voice was cold as the weather outside. You turned off your phone and stepped aside to let him in. You closed the door behind you, and he didn’t go too far from you.
“Statistically, when you state something, you’re 89% percent right, which is a pretty high number, but with an IQ of 159, it’s expected. However, this time you’re wrong.” His hands gripped the satchel bag strap nervously. “Of all the probabilities, I’m not here to break your heart.”
“So why does it feel like that?” You stared at the ceiling, blinking so you could delay the tears. “Not gonna say you’re inexperienced in relationships as a plausible excuse for what you did because that’s bullshit. You’ve read all these books about anything and everything, and still you decided that I’m not allowed to see you at your worst.”
“Don’t say it like that.”
“Just because it’s the truth? You pushed your friends aside, you closed the door in my face, too afraid to let us help more, to let us carry a little of your pain. For a genius, you’re pretty dumb, Reid.”
You stared at him, tears pouring down your red cheeks and shaken words. His eyes were on you, but it was almost impossible to know what was going on.
“We were friends before we were lovers. If I ever showed you signs I’m not trustworthy, please just say it, ok?” You pushed him for an answer, for just a glimpse of his thoughts. “Tell me if I got it wrong, and just… just break my heart.”
Spencer took off his bag, his badge, his winter coat, like he was stripping down from that armor he wore because of what he's been through and his job. The silence never suited him, words, facts, stories filling the room before people could even doubt his skills.
“It’s not just about my mom having a few bad days with the new meds. The LA case took a toll on me because I finally realized I’m not gonna be able to protect everyone I love forever, so I had to take some time to understand that. And I needed to do that alone.” He held your face gently, stroking the tears away. “I never intended to hurt you, to push you aside for this long. And I’m really sorry for hurting you while I was thinking of ways to do the opposite. Because I want to protect you.”
You covered his hands with yours, telling him you couldn’t bear staying away. Please, don’t fade away like an old memory, you silently begged him.
“I know not even all the sorrys in the world will do, and I’m probably gonna make a thousand more mistakes, but I’ll never push you aside again. Never.”
As to confirm his intentions, he took a step closer. And then another one. He lowered his head until he was just inches away from you.
“I trust you,” he kissed your forehead. “Seeing you sad and quiet broke my heart,” one kiss on your right cheek. “You won’t ever break your heart again because I won’t let you do it to yourself,” the skin on your left cheek was damp from the tears. “And I’ll sit and let you pour your heart out after what I did, even if the truth hurts. But I deserve your anger, and I’ll prove to be worthy of your love until I’m out of ideas.”
You’d have a long road ahead, you knew that. And you were going to make mistakes, and be in the same position Spencer was. And you were gonna find your way back to him, gonna be a better person for him and for the world. Just because people were mean to you or you faced the most dangerous psychopaths and situations, it was no excuse to be like them.
“We know promises are inherently hard to keep, but I promise, Spence, I will never let you go again,” you said.
“And I promise I won’t break your heart.”
You closed your eyes, the only question you wanted to ask him before you could leave this all behind and move to a better relationship on the tip of your tongue. Spencer was great with numbers, geographical profiles, and a long list of facts he knew by heart. And you were great at analyzing people’s words, from their intonation to their commas and periods.
“You said something before.”
“I kinda said a lot of things, do you want me to repeat?” he joked, lighthearted.
“You want to protect the ones you love. Not just because it’s part of your job, but because you love them,” you dogged the question, hoping he was smart enough to pick the queues.
“And look how that ended up.”
“Once I read this really cheesy book from Alan Cohen, he said ‘When you protect yourself from pain, be sure you do not protect yourself from love’.”
It was like watching the wheels turning on his brilliant mind, but not getting far enough to hear the words that are almost slipping out of your mouth. You moved a little bit of his hair away from his face, taking in all the details slowly as you touched his face.
“I forgive you, Spence.” His warm brown eyes watched you and your every movement. “Do you wanna stay the night? I need to finish the-”
“Yes. And I’ll help you with the reports tomorrow,” he held your hands, pushing your skin closer to his, “and take you to a vintage store I found the other day. I think you’re gonna like it. And then we can go out for some Indian or Mexican food.”
“Perfect. Now come here,” you brought Spence along until you both fell on your couch.
You turned the TV on, but as soon as his hands started to move up and down your back, and your legs intertwined, you fell into a deep sleep — perhaps the best you had in weeks. His kisses were smooth and light as a feather, but they were enough to bring you back together and then screw your mind forever.

Hello, can I ask from this ask game :
https://www.tumblr.com/threecheersforinking/677824836625694720/anime-ask-game?source=share
For anime/manga : Monster and Jujutsu Kaisen.
Sure!
JJK
Favourite Character:
Kenjaku (big surprise)
Favourite Arc/Episode/Scene:
That's a tough pick...I pretty much like the entire Culling Game Arc (ch 159 - 220) and Perfect Preparation is definitely also a fave, but if I would narrow it down a bit more, I'd say it's the stretch from Kenjaku's negotiations with other countries in chapter 200 until the preparation to release Gojo in chapter 220. I just really like the focus we get on Kenjaku's character there, the extra world building and lore and I also appreciate how dynamic and spontaneous things were during that time. The plans of the protagonists where often completely overthrown and you never quite knew what to expect and what might happen next. (I really miss that energy) I'd also like to mention the Baka Survivor mini-arc, which was such a breath of fresh air and did so much to give Kenjaku's and Takaba's characters much needed depth. I never expected it to be so important when it started. Shows that Gege can make the most ridiculous scenario meaningful if they want to. I think for favourite scene, Kenjaku's one-sided talk with Tengen in chapter 222 before the static TV is still my absolute favourite. It's such striking imagery, showed a whole new layer to their character and relationship with Tengen (establishing that despite technically getting what they wanted they realize this has basically completely destroyed their friendship with Tengen and left them unsatisfied) and sets up what made the Baka Survivor arc so successful.
Character I Think is Underrated:
There's a bunch. Takaba, Angel, Tengen and I'd also count Kenjaku because despite being the main antagonist who drives the entire plot forward, many fans still completely overlook them and their influence and at best boil them down to a generic cold Mastermind a la Aizen 2.0 or just make jokes about them giving birth to Yuuji/fucking Jin. It has gotten a little better since the Baka Survivor arc, at least in the Japanese fandom there seems to be a bit more appreciation there.
Character I Think is Overrated:
Geto. His downfall was well-written in Hidden Inventory, but aside from that I don't think he's all that interesting or exceptional. Also Inumaki. He's basically non-existent and irrelevant in the manga, but for some reason always in the top 10 of most popular characters.
Favourite Ship/Pairing:
Tengen/Kenjaku - special mix of obsession, toxicity, codependency and vore
Something I Love About the Show/Movie:
The way jjk fleshes out side characters and gives them meaning with barely a chapter or less. I also like the way supernatural has been interconnected with the real world and history. That's what makes it so fascinating to me and makes me want to dig deeper. I'm not a big fan of high fantasy or "real world but everyone is magical" settings, so jjk struck a good balance there.
Monster
Favourite Character:
Johan Liebert. Generic answer, I know, but he's one of the few anime villains I actually found scary and threatening. I was always on edge while watching the show, wondering when he would show up and even if he was there, what he would do. Just seeing him standing next to a kid is so stressful, even if he doesn't end up doing anything (just means the child will kill themselves later). I also love his co-dependent, obsessive relationship with Nina and the entire mystery about their past.
Favourite Arc/Episode/Scene:
Prague arc. Like I said, the mystery around Johan and Nina's origins is a big appeal for me for the series and this is all that. It also shows just how versatile Johan is. They also captured the atmosphere of Prague as a city, particularly at night really well. Similar to that, episode 49 where the kids are trying to catch JohAnna and one boy gets send to the red light district is probably my favourite. I like it especially because the focus isn't so much on the adult characters, but you really experience Johan from the eyes of an innocent child who just wanted to play detective and accidentally ran into a real serial killer. The chase of of Tenma & Co. was nerve-wrecking to watch because they're always just a little to late. The scene where JohAnna talks to Milosh about how his existence has no meaning is the main reason why just Noto Mamiko in any other anime stresses me out.
Character I Think is Underrated:
None really. I think the fandom shows a lot of appreciation to every important or minor character.
Character I Think is Overrated:
Tenma. He's just...a little annoying. I got very tired of everyone treating him like a saint for the most basic human decency. Also him angsting over having to kill Johan and only he can do it etc. got old pretty quickly for me. I know what he's supposed to represent, but I just think he's not very interesting to watch.
Favourite Ship/Pairing:
Johan/Jan. I just have a thing for naive regular guys falling for murderers. Johan also had a chance to kill him or his mother, but instead he helped them, so...he treated Jan a lot better than most of his victims. Also in a platonic sense, everything about Johan and Nina drives me insane.
Something I Love About the Show/Movie:
The side stories we are taken on, which all are significant often in ways you didn't expect and they are what make the story feel so human and down-to-earth despite the wild stuff that happens. I also love the inclusion of the fairy tales. I still have trauma from the way Nina reads Obluda in the anime. Just hearing 昔々ある所に gives me chills every time. Bůh Míru/The God of Peace is my favourite of the stories. The open end, the implication of suicide is what makes it so frightening exactly because everything is left to your imagination, plus the knowledge that kids who heard the story went through with what is being implied.

Hold My Hand: John Wick x Reader Chapter 159
Tumblr media
warnings: nsfw, john's pov at the beginning hmh masterlist
Buying another shop was a great idea at first, but it’s been a real hassle these past few weeks. Nothing seems to be going right, the security system goes off at least once a week, someone can’t figure out how to make returns or run the machine, and that always means that I’m running into the city to figure it out. I’m getting a little stressed out, but I’m trying my best to keep it under wraps since I don’t want Y/N to get upset as well. I just don’t want her to get stressed out. She doesn’t need this stress on top of being a new mom.
I had to run into the shop since there was someone there trying to return something and the new girl didn’t know how to do it. I asked if there was someone there to help but Naomi, who used to work at the shop in Mill Neck, was off today. I didn’t want to bother her on her day off, so I decided to just head out there myself while the girls stayed home.
Since I’m in New York City, I decide to stop off at a bakery that Y/N loves and pick up some treats for her and Ronan. I pull up in front of the shop as someone backs out of a spot, and I quickly pull in and take it. A spot right in front of the bakery is rare, so I won’t pass it up.
As I enter the bakery, the sweet smell of freshly baked goods fills my nostrils. The display case is full of various pastries and bread, making it difficult for me to choose what to get for the girls. I finally settle on a few things, and even get a baguette, still warm from the oven. The cozy atmosphere of the bakery makes me want to stay a little longer, but I remember that Y/N is waiting for me at home. With my purchases in hand, I head back to my car, eager to see Y/N and Ronan.
__
**
Since John had to run into the city, you called up Tess and asked if she wanted to go for a walk at the nature preserve that’s about 15 minutes away. You packed up the kids and dogs, then you headed out to it with her for a late morning walk.
It was nice to spend some time outside since it’s sunny and breezy today, and you even let Ronan put her feet in the little stream that runs through the preserve. The dogs enjoyed splashing in the water and running around too, but now they stink. Bleu will definitely need a bath later tonight. Luckily since it’s warm, you can do it in the backyard rather than in the house.
After spending a few hours at the nature preserve, you dropped Tess off at home, then you headed to the grocery store to pick up something to make for dinner tonight. You don’t know if John is home yet but if he doesn’t get home until later, you want to have dinner waiting for him since you know he probably hasn’t eaten since breakfast this morning.
You pull into the driveway and see John’s car parked, so you know that he’s home. You sit up a little to see that Ronan is still asleep in her car seat, so you get out of the car and get her so you can put her in her room before you come back for the groceries.
Half expecting John to be there to greet you, you’re a little bummed when you walk into the kitchen and find it empty. You furrow your brow when you hear the house so quiet until you see John asleep on the couch, and a smile spreads across your face when you see his long legs across the couch and his dark hair covering his face a little.
You tiptoe past him and head up to Ronan’s room to put her down for her nap, then you head back to the car for the rest of the groceries. As quietly as you can, you get them out of the crunchy brown sacks and put everything away, then you take off your shoes and tiptoe past John and up to Ronan’s room with your phone, iPad, and Ronan’s bag. She’ll be waking up in the next 20 minutes, so you’ll want to keep her occupied in her room until John is awake.
Exhaling quietly, you sit down in the rocker and curl up as you scroll through your phone. You tilt your head back against the chair and feel your eyes growing heavy, and before you can even stop it, you fall asleep.
__
It’s nearing 6 PM now, and John is still asleep on the couch. You thought he’d be awake by now, but he’s not. He’s obviously really tired, but you cant stay cooped up in Ronan’s room much longer. You’re both getting hungry.
“Okay, we need to be quiet because daddy is sleeping,” you whisper to Ronan and put your finger on your mouth,“Yeah, shh. Daddy is sleeping.”
You open the door and immediately spot John on the couch, and you grimace as you quietly walk down the stairs. You freeze when you step on the creaky floorboard and look over at John to see him still sleeping. Ronan spots him and squeals loudly and calls out for him, and you quickly run into the kitchen and poke your head out to see he hasn’t moved.
“Is he dead?” you say, then you put Ronan in her highchair and give her a few pieces of cereal before you head back into the living room to check on John. You kneel down next to him and see his chest rising and falling as he breathes, and you feel relief wash over you.
Since you’ll be making dinner soon and making noise, you want John to go up to your room if he needs to keep resting. You don’t want to disturb him though.
You hesitate every time you reach out to touch his chest to wake him up, but you finally give in and rub his chest a few times before he stretches out and rubs his hands over his face.
“Hi, baby. I just want you to know I’m going to make dinner soon, so you should go upstairs and get some rest.” you whisper to him as he looks over at you, and you smile softly at him, “Go get some rest upstairs.”
“I’m okay,” he says as he reaches out to touch your cheek, then he rolls onto his side and smiles at you before he closes his eyes again.
You lean over to kiss his forehead, then you get up and head into the kitchen since he’s okay with you making noise while you make dinner. Ronan has eaten the pieces of cereal you’ve given her, so you get her out and allow her to go into the living room to see her daddy. Her little giggles cause a smile to spread across your face since you know John’s probably scooped her up and is snuggling her now.
On the counter is a pastel pink colored box that you hadn’t noticed earlier, and you open it and smile when you see a dozen different pastries inside. You look at the box and smile when you see it’s the bakery that you love in New York City, and you feel your heart flutter knowing John was sweet enough to stop by and get something for you.
__
Dinner was good but quiet. John still seems so tired. He cleared his plate and helped you clean up the kitchen, but he didn’t say much. He got the table cleaned off and Ronan’s highchair, then he sat down with her on the couch to read a book to her. You were expecting him to fall asleep while he read it but he made it through.
You’re just now getting Ronan ready for bed and John is still in the rocking chair just staring at the floor.
“Hey,” you smile at him when he looks at you, “Say goodnight to her so you can head to bed.”
John looks at you and nods his head, then he gets up and walk over to kiss Ronan goodnight. He hugs her tight in his arms and puckers his lips for a kiss, then he hands her back to you. You smile as you look at him, but you know he can see the worry in your eyes. He’s being quiet and withdrawn, and he’s not the type of person to take naps during the day, so this is all so weird.
“Hey, peach…” he calls out, and you turn around, “You’re coming to bed after, right?”
“Yeah, of course.” you nod, then you cock up your brow, “Will you be awake?”
John laughs, nodding, “I will be.”
“Okay, we’ll see.” you tease, then you close your eyes and rub Ronan’s back to coax her to sleep.
__
As you come around the corner, you see John sitting up in bed as he watches TV. He smiles and perks up more, then he waves you over to him, pulling you up to straddle his waist so he can give you a huge hug and kiss. You melt against his lips as you kiss him, then you snuggle into his arms.
“Mm, definitely missed this today.” he whispers, and you nod your head.
The two of you hold each other for a few minutes, then you press a kiss to his lips and walk over to get changed into some pajamas. You pull out a tank top and some shorts since it’s pretty warm tonight, then you get changed and put your hair into a bun before you crawl back in bed with John.
He’s been so quiet and tired tonight, and you’re starting to wonder if maybe he’s coming down with the flu or something.
You reach up and place your hand on his forehead, which causes him to look at you in confusion. You sit up more and press your cheek to his forehead, then you sit down and shrug.
“You don’t have the flu.”
“I’m not sick,” he laughs, reaching for your hand.
You inhale deeply and sigh, “Well, what’s going on?”
“Just…tired today. That’s all.” he says, holding your gaze, “I didn’t sleep that great last night.”
“Yeah, it was really hot in here last night.” you nod, laying down next to him, “I won’t lay all over you tonight.”
John laughs as he pulls you closer, “I don’t care if I sweat to death, I need you to lay with me.”
You sit up to turn on the fan next to your bed, then you move back to John and kiss him before you lay with your head on his chest. You draw circles on his skin for a few moments, then you tilt your head back to look at him.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
John nods, “I am.”
He’s lying to you. He’s lying. You can tell. You know him. He’s lying.
“Okay.” you smile softly at him, then you lean up to kiss him as he intertwines his fingers with yours. You roll onto your back as he continues kissing you, then you laugh when he leans down and peppers your neck in feather-light kisses that cause you to shiver.
Cupping his face, you hold his gaze for a few moments, then you kiss him again before you both move back so you can lay on his chest. John exhales softly as you rub his chest, then after a few moments, you look up to see him asleep again.
You reach over for the remote to turn off the TV, then you press a soft kiss to his cheek, “Goodnight, baby.”
__
Inhaling deeply, you squeeze your eyes shut and feel John pressing kisses to your cheek as he rubs your back. You finally open your eyes to look at him, and he smiles as he rubs his thumb over your cheek.
“I gotta run into the city.”
“Why?”
John sighs, “They just need some extra help out there today. I’m not sure when I’ll be home, but I’ll call you in a little bit to let you know what’s going on.”
You sit up and rest on your elbows, then you look over to check the time on the clock on John’s nightstand. 7:12. You look back at John and nod your head as you lean over to kiss him goodbye.
“Wait…” you pull him back for another kiss. “I love you.”
“I love you, peach.” he whispers, then he kisses your forehead. “I just got Ronan up and fed, so she’s just in her pack ‘n play.”
You nod as you sit up and take John’s hand, then you walk with him downstairs to the living room where Ronan is playing with some toys. You spot the steaming cup of coffee on the table and the cinnamon roll next to it on a plate, and you look over at John and smile.
“Thank you.”
“I’ll call you in a little bit.” he whispers, and you nod your head. He walks over to Ronan and smiles, “Be good for mom.”
Ronan reaches up for John as he leans down to kiss her, then she plops back on her butt to play with her toys. You sit down on the couch and pull your knees close to your chest as John walks out the front door and gets in his car. You rest your chin on your knee and watch as he backs out of the driveway, then you sigh and continue staring out the window.
__
John is lying. He’s lying about being fine. But you know he’s only doing it to protect your feelings. For the past few weeks, he’s been called out to the Manhattan shop several times during the week, and you know it’s starting to catch up to him. He’s missing out on spending time with Ronan, so you know he’s incredibly bummed out.
You’ve decided to show up there and surprise him, so hopefully it goes well.
It’s been weeks since you last visited the Manhattan shop and John has hired more people since then, so you don’t know them like you do with the shop in Mill Neck. You find it funny when they greet you at the door as if you’re just a customer.
“Hi! Welcome to Next Chapter. Can I help you find anything?”
You smile at girl behind the counter, “Just looking for my husband.”
“Oh…” she slouches a little and stammers, “Well, I…I don’t know who he is, so I can’t really help you.”
Naomi comes around the corner and smiles, “Mrs. Wick! Hi.”
“Hi,” you hug her and look around, “The shop looks nice.”
The poor girl behind the counter puts her hand over her mouth as her face turns red, “I am so sorry. I didn’t realize that you were…”
“It’s okay,” you laugh as you reach out to shake her hand, “I actually haven’t been out here much, so that’s my fault. I’m Y/N.”
“Maya,” she says as she shakes your hand.
You smile at her, “Seriously, don’t feel bad. It really is my fault. I should be coming out here more often.”
Naomi walks over to help someone when they come in, and you smile at Maya before you head downstairs to the office. As soon as you get to the bottom of the stairs, you see John with his head down and his phone pressed to his ear.
“Why aren’t you answering?” he says under his breath, then he looks at his phone and presses it to his ear again.
You feel your phone vibrating in your purse and realize he’s trying to get a hold of you, which makes you smile. How cute is he?
“Hi,” you say softly, and John looks up at you, “Are you trying to call me?”
John perks up as he nods, “Yeah, what are you doing here?”
“Oh, I can leave.” you point over your shoulder and shrug, “I mean, if you don’t want me to be here.”
“Stop!” he shakes his head, laughing, “But why did you come all the way out here?”
You smile as you watch him get up to hug you, “I came to be with you.”
John wraps his arms around you tight and holds you as he leans back against the desk. You lean against his chest and hug him, and you feel him tighten his grip on you when you try to move.
“What’s going on, John? Talk to me.”
John exhales and finally loosens his grip on you as you lean back, “I’ve been really stressed out these past few weeks. Something comes up constantly here and I have to come out here and deal with it. I didn’t think it would be so stressful.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t want you to get stressed out too,” he whispers, wiping away the tear on your cheek, “See?”
You reach up and place his hand on your cheek, “I’m crying because you’re stressing and going through this alone. That’s not what a marriage is, John. We do this together. We bought the shop. This isn’t your problem alone.”
“I know, I just didn’t want you to get stressed out.” he whispers, and you tilt your head and hold his gaze as he starts to laugh. “I know, I should have just told you.”
“What happened to Team Wick, huh?” you jokingly shove his shoulder before you wrap your arms around his waist and hug him again. “You don’t have to be stressed out and suffer through this stuff alone. Not anymore. Not since I’m here. You’re my partner in crime, babe. It’s you and me.”
John nods as he leans back against the desk, then he sits on it and pulls you between his legs, sliding his hands into your back pockets, “I miss you and Ronan so much. I feel like I’m missing out on everything.”
“Well,” you exhale as you look at him, “I got her all packed up for college and she’s moving out this weekend.”
“Stop,” John laughs, then he shakes his head.
You reach back for John’s hands and intertwine your fingers with his, “You honestly haven’t missed out on much. She’s doing all the same things.”
“Still shitting her pants?” he asks, and you nod and laugh when he playfully groans, “Damn.”
“Yup, still pooping her pants. I gave her a bath the other night and she shit herself during it. You missed that.”
John laughs, “Glad I missed that.”
“I’m sure.”
John is quiet for a few moments, then he looks at you and blinks a few times before he looks down at your hands, “Do you think she misses me?”
Taking a deep breath, you hold his gaze and shrug as you tear up, “I don’t know how to answer that.”
“What does that mean?”
You wipe the tears on your face, “If I say no, you’ll be bummed. If I say yes, you’ll feel even worse. You’ll feel like shit no matter how I answer.”
John leans his forehead against yours and sighs, “I need to figure out this shit here. I can’t keep leaving you two.”
You cup his face and nod, “Let me help.”
Letting go of you, John walks over and sits down at his desk, then he gets out some papers while you pull up a chair next to him. He looks over at you and smiles, then he pulls your chair closer to him with incredibly sexy effortlessness.
“I got a ton of new books that came in, I need to organize those and get them out on the shelves. The security system is shit, so I need to cancel that and get someone out here today to set up a new one, so I’ve been looking up some places.” he says, and you nod as you lean closer to look at his laptop.
“What do you need me to do?”
John takes a deep breath and looks at you, and you cock up your brow since you know he wasn’t going to give you something to do. You came here to help, so he better find something for you to do.
“I’m here to help. It’s my shop too.”
John nods, then he looks around his desk, “The apartment upstairs is still up for rent, but I haven’t really had any offers on it. I’m not sure people really want to live and work in the same place.”
You nod, then you point upstairs, “How about Maya?”
“She was just hired a few weeks ago, but I overheard her talking to Naomi about it.”
“Well,” you get up and shrug, “Then I’ll go ask her.”
Heading upstairs, you smile when you walk past a few customers, then you finally spot Maya helping an older gentleman find a book. You wait a few moments for her to look over at you, and you smile at her when she does.
“Excuse me…” you say softly, “Can I speak with you downstairs when you get a moment?”
The color drains from Maya’s face, “Of course.”
“Whenever you have a moment. No rush.” you smile softly, then you head back down to John and see him on the phone.
“Yeah, today would be perfect.” he nods, and you sit down, “Yeah, thank you. Bye.”
You look at him and raise your eyebrows, “They’re coming?”
“Should be here by 2.” he says, looking down at his watch before he looks at you, “Talk to Maya?”
“She was with someone, so I just asked her to come down when she’s free.”
John chuckles, “Probably gave her a heart attack in the process.”
“She felt so bad because she thought I was a customer when I came in.” you say as you laugh, then you get up and grab a box of books and look through them, “It’s my fault since I don’t come in here much.”
“No, it’s my fault.” he says, and you look over at him, “It’s my fault because I never ask if you want to come with.”
You furrow your brow as you laugh, “I’m fully capable of driving here myself. Don’t take the blame.”
John gets up from his desk and walks over to wrap his arms around your waist, “Is Ro with your mom?”
“Tess,” you say, looking over your shoulder. “I just dropped her off there since she was closer.”
“Makes sense.” he buries his face in the crook of your neck and exhales, “Do you think my girls would want to go out on a date with me tonight?”
You smile as you look at him, “I think they would like that very much.”
John smiles softly, then he leans over to kiss you before he lets go, “Oh, hey, Maya.”
“Hi,” she says as she wrings her hands, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
You laugh as you brush it off, then you gesture for her to sit down as you walk over to sit with John, “So, how do you like the shop?”
“I like it a lot. It’s got the right vibes.” she says, and John laughs quietly. “It’s nice. Not too busy, but not too quiet that I get bored.”
“Yeah, that’s how I feel about the shop back home.” you nod, then you look at John, “It’s quiet but not too quiet, but our shop in Mill Neck has a different feel to it. More like a small town bookshop, where as here it has a little more…of a sophisticated vibe to it, you know? We still try to bring some of that homey feel to it though with the couches and chairs.”
Maya nods, “I can see that.”
“So, John mentioned that he overheard you talking to Naomi about the apartment upstairs…”
“Yeah, I just asked what was up there.” Maya says as her eyes grow as wide as buttons, “Is…is that a problem?”
You laugh as you reach out to touch her hand, “No! Oh my god, no. I’m so sorry if I’ve given you the impression that you’re in trouble.”
John laughs, “You’re scaring her.”
“I am so sorry!” you put your hands over your face and laugh, “Literally not my intention. I’m just trying to be as professional as John always is. He’s so much better at it.”
“We’re asking because it’s for rent,” John says, and you sit back and nod your head. “If you’re interested in it, we’d be more than happy to show you around.”
Maya smiles a little, “Really?”
“Yeah, it’s a one bedroom, but it’s not bad for a single person.” John says, then he shrugs and looks at you. “It came with the shop when we bought it, and we thought it would be good for an employee, as long as they don’t mind living where they work.”
“Uh,” Maya chuckles a little, “I mean, it depends on rent, of course.”
John nods, “We could work something out.”
Maya nods her head, “I think it would be so freaking cool to live here.”
“You’d have a great view,” you say as she smiles, “You’d be close to work! That’s a bonus.”
“Can I take the day to think about it?”
John nods, “Of course. There’s no rush.”
“Do you want me to show you the apartment?” you ask, and Maya clasps her hands and nods. You look over at John and reach for the keys, then you wait for Maya to get out of the office before you lean down to kiss him, “Be right back.”
“Hate to go see...wait…” he laughs as he shakes his head, “Hate to see you go…”
You smirk as you look at him, “Jonathan Wick, are you flustered?”
John leans over to make sure Maya isn’t near, then he reaches out and spanks you, “These shorts…”
You laugh as you lean over to kiss him, then you wink before you head upstairs with Maya. The two of you head to the back of the shop where there’s a door that leads upstairs, and you unlock it and gesture for her to go first. The stairwell is cramped, so you quickly head up to the apartment door and unlock it.
“You got your kitchen here, bathroom here, living room, and the bedroom. Great view from the window,” you say as you walk into the empty apartment. “You can paint it whatever you want, hang whatever you want.”
The living room is big and spacious and the windows are large, so there’s plenty of natural light that comes in. The dark exposed ceiling gives the illusion that room is taller than it really is, but it also leaves the room feeling a little more modern.
Maya nods as a smile spreads across her face, then she walks around and looks at everything, “It’s really cute. Bigger than I thought.”
“Yeah, the bedroom is quite big.” you nod, leaning back against the kitchen counter.
“Oh, uh, I have a cat and a dog.” she says, looking at you, “Can I have pets here?”
You nod, “Of course. I have a dog at home who I couldn’t live without, so I would never tell you no. And trust me, John would never tell you no either. Bleu is everything to that man. So, yes, you can definitely have pets.”
Maya laughs, “Thanks, they’re my babies.”
“Completely understand.” you nod, then you smile at her, “Take all the time you need, Maya. We’re in no rush. And if you decide this isn’t right for you, that’s okay too.”
“Thanks. I just want to talk to my dad about it.” she says, shrugging, “He gives good advice.”
You smile, “You’re very lucky to have that.”
Maya walks past you and heads back down to the shop, and you lock up and make your way downstairs to the office again, finding John still going through papers at the desk.
“So, did she like it?”
“She did. I forgot how big that place actually is. I guess I remember it just being a studio.” you say, furrowing your brow, “I don’t know what I was thinking. But yes, she liked it and said she wants to speak with her dad first because he gives good advice.”
John chuckles, then he leans over to kiss you a few times, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” you whisper, holding his hand, “What else do you need help with?”
“Uh, just those two boxes over there. The books need to be divided up by genre so we can put them out.”
You nod as you get up, “I’m on it. Is that it?”
“Yeah, I think that’s pretty much everything.”
“See how much easier everything is when you just let your wife handle it.” you joke, and John lets out a laugh as he nods.
A knock on the door causes you to look over your shoulder, and you look over at John as he gets up and shakes hands with who you assume is the guy from the security company.
John touches the lower part of your back, then he kisses your cheek, “I’ll be right back.”
“Okay,” you nod, then you smile at him as he leaves.
__
John still wants to take you and Ronan out on a date tonight, so you left the shop and headed home to shower and get ready. You know that you won’t be going anywhere fancy for dinner since Ronan will be tagging along, but you still want to change into something else. Maybe a nice summer dress.
You set a few dresses out on your bed, then you stand back and look at them as Ronan waddles over to the bed.
“What dress should momma wear?” you ask, and Ronan scrunches up her face and looks at you, “Yeah, which one? That one? Okay.”
You take the powder blue dress that Ronan pointed at and put it on, then you turn around to fix it in the mirror as you look at yourself. The dress falls just a little above your knee, so you’ll have to keep that in mind if Ronan runs off during dinner. It’s probably not the best thing to wear since she’s quite the little runner lately, but you feel good in it and you might even get a few lingering looks from John.
Since he’s been working so much these past few weeks, you haven’t really had much time alone. You’ve had enough time alone for a quickie here and there, but the two of you always love to lay in bed and talk, and John always loves to take his time with you--you’re definitely not complaining about that. You’re hoping that maybe tonight you two can spend some time together after your date.
“Alright,” you reach down for Ronan and pick her up, “Let’s get you ready, bug.”
Walking to Ronan’s room, you kiss her cheek over and over, then you set her down in the middle of the floor before you go through her closet to find a dress for her. You find a cute romper that has little peaches all over it, and you kneel down and check Ronan’s diaper before you put the romper on her. You get the peach colored headband, then you put it on and smile as you look at her.
“Oh, bug, you’re so beautiful!”
You perk up when you hear the front door open, so you lift Ronan up and walk out to see John coming in the front door with two bouquets of flowers.
“Hi, daddy!”
John smiles as you come down the stairs, “Look at my beautiful girls.”
Ronan bounces in your arms and waves at John as she calls out for her dada, and you laugh as you walk over to him so he can kiss her.
“These are for you, little lady.” he says, handing her the bouquet of light pink carnations and baby’s breath.
“Oh, these are so beautiful!” you say as you take them, then you hold them up to her nose so she can smell them, “Smell. Mmm.”
John laughs when Ronan tries to bite one of the flowers, “No, baby, you smell them. Like this…”
You smile when John demonstrates for Ronan how to smell a flower, then you hoist her up, “We better get these into some water.”
“Oh, and these are for you, miss.” John holds up the other flowers and smiles, “Flowers for my dates who both look so pretty.”
You blush as you look at him, “Thank you. Ro picked out my dress.”
“I’m going to shower. I’ll be ready in 30 minutes.” he whispers, and you nod as he leans over to kiss you. “You look beautiful, baby.”
You let Ronan down and listen to her little feet as she follows behind you to the kitchen. She clings to your leg and drools all over it, then she reaches for the handle on the cabinet and pulls on it, rocking back and forth until she falls on her butt. You let out a small laugh when she gets up and waddles off to find something else to do instead since she can’t get in the cabinet with the safety locks.
After getting the flowers in some vases, you leave them on the counter and head out to find Ronan chewing on the TV remote. Thankfully you clean it regularly since she tends to chew on it whenever it’s around. You’re pretty sure she likes it because she likes the way the rubber buttons feel on her gums.
“You and this dang remote,” you laugh, then you grab a teething toy, “Here.”
Ronan takes it from you, then she waddles around the living room and over to Bleu. She sits down next to him and leans her head against his belly, and you smile as you sit down on the couch and wait for John.
__
You’re making a funny noise and making Ronan laugh until she’s wheezing with laughter, and almost everyone in the diner is looking over to watch. You blow raspberries in the crook of Ronan’s neck and smiles when she squeals.
“Okay, okay,” you laugh, setting her in your lap, “Momma will stop.”
John laughs as he reaches for your hand, “You two…”
“What?”
“I just love you two so much.”
You tilt your head a little and smile softly, “We love you too!”
John presses a kiss to the back of your hand and looks down at Ronan as she chews on your other hand, and he laughs a little, “She’s chewing on everything.”
“She was chewing on my leg earlier.” you say, then you wiggle finger over Ronan’s lips and laughs when she tries to chew on it, “I think she’s teething again, so…”
John grimaces a little, “At least we know what to do now.”
Ronan stands up in your lap and claps her hands, then she reaches over for John. He sits up a little and takes her, then he hold tight to her when she stands up in the booth next to him.
You prop your head up on your fist and watch Ronan grin at her daddy, and you laugh when she leans over with her mouth wide open to kiss him. John scrunches up his face a little and wipes away the spit she’s left on his cheek, then he kisses her.
John and Ronan share an inseparable bond, yet they never exclude you. Despite Ronan being a baby, she ensures that you feel included--it’s such a weird way to put it, but a testament to her deep affection for you and John. She always wants you and John, and she is always craving the attention and affection from you both, which of course you two are never upset about giving her.
“When we get home, do you want to spend some time in the pool?” you ask, and John nods his head. “It’s pretty warm tonight.”
“Well, let’s head out now. That way Ro can swim with us for a bit before she goes to bed.” John suggests, then he gets some money and tucks it behind a cup as you get up and fix your dress. You clap your hands and take Ronan when she leans over for you, then you wait for John to get up before you walk with him to the front door.
“Hey,” John whispers as you stand at the car, “Maybe mom and dad can have some hot tub time?”
“Oh, absolutely.” you smile, then you smirk when John perks up.
__
Ronan had so much fun with you and John in the pool but she got tired not long after. You brought her upstairs and put her down for the night, then you headed back to the pool and hopped in with John before you both moved to the hot tub with some wine.
“Oh, I meant to tell you earlier, Maya asked if we could meet with her dad this weekend to discuss the apartment.” John says, and you nod your head, “I figured we could discuss it and talk about the lease.”
“Sounds good to me,” you say as you close your eyes and feel the warm water relaxing your body. You frown when the jets turn off, then you look over at John, “The timer ran out.”
John laughs as he walks over to turn the jets back on, then he stands in front of you and smiles, leaning down to kiss you a few times. You cup his face to keep him from moving away from you, and he reaches down and lifts you up as the two of you kiss. He sits down with you in his lap, then he pulls the string on your swimsuit top and pulls it off of you.
“Fuck…” he whispers as he looks at your chest, then he leans down and sucks on your nipple, closing his eyes and humming loudly, “Put your feet up here.”
You furrow your brow when John suggests you stand up in front of him on the bench, then you nod when you realize why he wants that. He unties the side of your bottoms, then he pulls them off and tosses them aside before he licks his lips and leans up to bury his face between your legs. You lean over and hold onto the side of the hot tub, then you laugh a little.
“I know you want this, but this is such an awkward--” you squeeze your eyes shut and moan loudly as John sucks on your clit. You look down at John and bite your lip, “Holy shit…”
“You were saying…”
You chuckle softly as you tilt your head back, then meet his gaze before stepping away from the bench and leaning against his chest for a passionate kiss. Keeping your lips locked onto his, he rises to remove his swim trunks while you trail your hands up and down his torso before slipping them beneath the water’s surface to stroke him intimately. As he grasps at your ass, you moan in pleasure into each other's mouths until finally settling into his lap where you let out soft moans of ecstasy as you feel him brush against your inner thighs.
After adjusting your position several times, you eventually slide down the length of him as your eyes roll shut. His hands are irresistibly drawn to your thighs, gliding upwards until they rest firmly on your ass. With rapt attention, he guides the rhythm of you on top of him.
“Oh, fuck, John,” you whine as you tilt your head back, then you look at him, “Fuck, I’ve missed you.”
John places his right hand on the back of your neck and pulls you closer, “I’ve missed you too.”
You close your eyes and moan softly as John leans up to suck on your neck, and you roll your hips faster, chasing the pleasure. His hand slides down to your breast where he pinches and twists your nipple, then he sucks on it and wraps his arms around you tight before you both look at each other.
“Take your time,” you whisper, nodding your head and cupping his face, “Take your time with me.”
“Absolutely.”
__
You brought Ronan along to meet with Maya and her dad to act as a…buffer. John can be intimidating, but he’s not as intimidating when he’s holding his baby girl. Hopefully when Maya’s dad sees John with Ronan, he’ll understand that John is the same as him: a dad who just really loves his daughter and wants what’s best for her.
You’re currently in the apartment with Ronan, and you’re kneeling down by the window with her as she looks out and points at every car on the street. John ran to get some sandwiches for the two of you since you both completely forgot to eat lunch, but he should be back soon.
“Hello?” Maya pokes her head in and smiles, “Hi.”
“Hey, come in.” you get up and fix your jeans as you walk over to meet her dad.
Maya walks over and gestures to her dad, “This is my dad.”
“Hi,” you reach out and shake his hand, “I’m Y/N.”
“William,” he nods, then he puts his hands on his waist and nods as he looks around the living room, already inspecting it.
Very much a protective dad.
“Oh, I’m not sure you’ve met her yet, this is Ronan,” you say, reaching down to pick her up, “Can you say hi, baby?”
Maya smiles when Ronan waves at her, then she laughs, “She looks just like John.”
“It’s the eyes,” John says as he walks in, then he sets the bag down and walks over to shake hands with William, and they immediately begin talking about the apartment.
You bounce Ronan in your arms a few times, then you laugh when she leans over for Maya to hold her. Maya cautiously takes her from you and holds her, then she sits down on the floor. You sit down with them and get a few of Ronan’s toys, and you smile when she holds them up to show Maya.
“How old is she?”
“Just turned 9 months,” you say, tickling Ronan’s belly. “She just started walking, so she’s kind of in love with walking around right now. Every where I go, I just hear her little feet right behind me.”
Maya laughs, “That’s cute.”
“She’d get so frustrated when John and I would be a few feet away talking and she’d just cry because she couldn’t get to us. She started crawling early and walking too. We’re fully convinced she’s a genius, but it’s most likely because she just tries to keep up with us.” you say, then you look over at John as he hands William the lease he came up with last night. He glances at you for a moment, and you smile at him before you look back at Ronan, “She just loves her daddy so much.”
Ronan gets up and wobbles a little, then she walks over to John and clings to his jeans before he reaches down and picks her up. She reaches up and scratches her fingers over his beard as he tries his hardest to keep a straight face, and you and Maya both laugh.
“Maya,” William looks at her and waves her over, so the two of you both get up and walk over to the counter. “Mr. Wick has come up with a lease for you.”
“I just figured a three month lease would be best. Say in three months, you no longer wish to live here or even work here,” John shrugs as he looks at her, “This way you’re not tied down for six months or longer.”
Maya nods, then she looks at her dad, “And the rent is okay?”
“Rent is…the cheapest you’re going to get in Manhattan, especially with a place this big and nice.” he says, then he laughs, “Kind of feel bad for how cheap it is.”
“Well, just because we’ve lowered the rent doesn’t mean anything. Anytime you need repairs or anything, don’t hesitate to call us. We’ll call someone and get them out here to fix it.” you say, and John nods, “And we’ll pay for it. We own this place, and John and I went back and forth for about a month over what to do with it. We certainly don’t need it since we have a home in Mill Neck, so we figured why not rent it out to someone?”
Maya perks up as she looks at her dad, “So you like it?”
“I do,” William nods and looks around, “It’s a nice place.”
John hoists Ronan up a little, “We got a new security system as well, so she’s safe here.”
You smile as you look at John, then you rub his back a little before intertwining your fingers with his. He lets go to wrap his arm around your shoulder, then he pulls you closer and kisses the top of your head while Maya and William walk around to discuss everything.
Ronan kicks her legs to be put down, then she waddles after Maya as you laugh. Maya looks down when Ronan clings to her leg, and John lets out a small laugh when she reaches up to be held.
“Grace better be careful. I think Ro is finding a few favorite.” John says, and you laugh as you move to stand in front of him. He looks over the top of your head at William, then he looks at you, “Lunch in the park after?”
You nod your head as you lean up to kiss his cheek, “Yeah.”
“And I’m right here for work too.” Maya whispers, and her dad nods. “I really like this place, dad. And Mr. and Mrs. Wick are really, really nice to me.”
William nods, then he wraps his arm around her shoulder, “If this is what you want…”
“I do.” she nods, and he leans down to kiss her cheek.
You smile when they walk back over to you to sign the lease, and you open the cupboard and pull out the purple gift bag, “I had a feeling you’d say yes, so I got you a housewarming gift. If I was a single girl, I’d take the place too.”
Maya laughs as she pulls out the little potted plant and the candle you bought for her, then she hugs you, “Thank you.”
John takes the papers after they’ve signed them, then he hands Maya a set of keys, “There you go. Welcome home.”
“I have an apartment!” Maya laughs.
“The only thing we ask is no crazy parties since the shop is downstairs,” John says, and Maya laughs as she nods. “That’s pretty much it. Oh, and if you have anything in particular that you want, such as a certain couch and desk, just let us know and we’ll pick it up for you.”
William shakes his head as he laughs, “She’s got plenty of stuff at home.”
Ronan throws her toy to the floor and laughs as it skids over to your feet, then she walks over and reaches up for you.
“We’ll get out of your hair. You can move in whenever you want.” John says, then he shakes William’s hand, “I promise she’ll be safe here. I know how protective we can get about our kids, especially our daughters. You have my word.”
You feel your heart flutter a little as John looks over at Ronan in your arms, then you walk over and hug Maya, “I can’t wait to see how you decorate the place. Paint and do whatever you want in here!”
“Yeah, I’m really excited for that part.” she smiles, then she waves at Ronan, “Bye.”
“Say bye, Ro.” you wave, and Ronan waves at Maya as you walk to the door.
John grabs the bag from the counter, then he walks down the stairs with you to the shop. It’s open today but things were taken care of--thankfully. You walk through the shop and smile at some customers, then you wave at Naomi before heading out to the street where your car is parked out front.
“Definitely gonna need the stroller.” you say, hoisting Ronan up more, “I’m a little weakling or she’s just getting so much bigger.”
John laughs as he gets it from the trunk, then he kisses Ronan’s cheek as he puts her in it. You stuff your purse in the bottom, then you wrap your arm around John’s bicep and lock the car before walking across the street to the park.
“So, I have a question,” John says, and you look up at him, “If you were single, you’d want to live out here?”
“Well, no. I love Mill Neck.” you say, shrugging. “I don’t want to live here. There’s too many people and it’s never quiet. I don’t even like coming into the city when I’m alone. It makes me so, so, so anxious. I only ever come out here when I’m with you or if I’m coming out here to see you.”
John nods, “What if when you first moved here, you found this shop and it was looking to hire and rent an apartment out, would you have taken it?”
“Maybe, I guess. I don’t know. Part of me wants to say yes.”
“We wouldn’t have met then,” he says, and you look up at him again, “We wouldn’t have met if you had moved here.”
You shake your head as you laugh, “I don’t believe that. I think you and I would meet no matter what. No matter where in New York I was living, you and I would meet.”
“You really think that?”
“We were meant to meet so that we could have this beautiful little girl,” you say, nodding your head, “Whether we met because Bleu ran up to me at the mailbox or we both hailed the same taxi, we would have met.”
John smiles, “Yeah.”
“I was literally outside of the museum while you were inside fucking shit up. You think that wasn’t fate?” you laugh, and John smiles wider. “We might have just missed one another once or twice but it wasn’t the right time until September 5th.”
“Best day of my life.” John smiles, pulling you closer to his side.
You tilt your head back and smile at him, “We were destined to meet and fall in love because without one another, we wouldn’t have Ronan. Ronan wouldn’t be who she is if you weren’t her dad.”
John smiles as he leans down to kiss you, “I love you so much, you know that?”
“Do you know that I love you so much?” you ask, and John nods his head before leaning down to kiss you.
Ronan squeals loudly as you and John kiss, and you laugh against his lips and look down at her as she waves at random people. You smile as you look at some little kids waving at her, then you look back at John.
“Best thing we ever did,” he whispers, and you nod your head as he cups your face, “Best thing I ever did: meeting you.”
“Stop!” you laugh as you put your hand over your face, “You’ll make me cry.”
You feel a sense of comfort and safety in his embrace, like nothing else in the world really matters. His touch is gentle yet firm, and you can't help but smile at the warmth he brings to your heart. As you pull away from him, John looks into your eyes and whispers words of love that make your heart skip a beat, and a smile spreads across your face. You realize how lucky you are to have him in your life, and you vow to cherish every moment with him. The memory of this embrace will stay with you forever, a reminder of the love that surrounds you.

Martin’s hard to ask about much of anything. He talks, sure, about the cows on their daily walks to stave away the depression from sitting inside and gettin no sun, about how nice it is to be out of the city – and when Jon asks him if he’s lived in a small town before, Martin goes back to shrugs and nods and “mhm hm”s, and it’s all Jon can do not to yell at him and ask him if he really wanted to come out of the lonely if all he’s going to do is take it with him. Scotland is beautiful, especially the highlands. It’s all endless greenery and quaint cottages. Jon’s lived in cities all his life – Bournemouth, Oxford, London – finally getting to live in such a rural place as Dunnet is good, even under the circumstances.
It’s not fair. It’s hypocritical, even, god knows Jon’s not great at sharing his feelings, but he wants to try, at least, for Martin. But Jon’s never been good at sharing, and Martin’s guarding his feelings closely, so they continue in this awful dance around each other, asking what they want to eat, and should they pop back into town rather than actual real questions.
It changes over a pack of cigarettes.
They’re unpacking groceries. Jon came with Martin to the town, talked about the old crofting houses, and the church, and even the gunshop — “furthest north in Scotland,” he’d told Martin instead of actually talking to him. Jon goes into the shop, picks up cans of soup and asks for a packet of cigarettes. Then he walked out, with Martin waiting outside, anxious about letting Jon out of his site — and Jon wants to tell himself it’s Martin’s fear of the Lonely coming back, he really does — but more anxious about having to interact with the shopkeeper.
Jon emerges with bags full of groceries, Martin takes one, and they walk back together. Martin points out the scenery. Jon empties his endless vat of non-supernatural knowledge, surprising himself and Martin with how much he knows.
“It was probably one of my procrastination research rabbit holes in university,” he explains to Martin, then remembers Martin hasn’t gone to university, nor even finished high school and is torn between apologising or saying nothing, and instead lapses into awkward, uncomfortable silence.
It’s so easy to be alone with someone you love, when you can’t love them how you want to, and instead you’re stuck with silence and small talk.
So, they’ve returned, they’re unpacking the groceries, and Martin takes out a pack of cigarettes, and Jon — so used to buying groceries with Georgie in their time together in university — takes it from Martin’s hand without a second thought. He smokes and Georgie doesn’t. He smokes and Martin doesn’t. He’ll smoke outside, bring one of the quilts out, look up at the stars framed by the curling wisps coming from his mouth and cigarette.
“You bought the cigarettes?” Martin asks.
“Uh, yes, I mean, unless you’re a smoker too.”
Martin shrugs. “I’m  not,” he says, in that flat tone that shows that he wants the conversation to be over.
“Alright.” Jon pockets the cigarettes. “I’ll smoke outside, and I won’t litter.” Jon tries for a joke. “Leave only footprints, you know.”
“I don’t like you smoking,” Martin says.
Jon looks back at him. “Alright,” he says. “Sorry?”
“You should stop,” he continues. “It’ll kill you one day.”
Jon scoffs. “Yes, Martin, I know. It legally has to say it on the box.”
“So, you know, but you’re just going to put your life in danger?”
Jon looks up at the ceiling, takes a deep breath. “Martin, can we not talk about the smoking—”
“What, should we talk about the coffin then?” Martin snaps, suddenly fierce. “God, Jon, you just love an opportunity to put yourself in harms way, and ignore everyone who tries to stop you—”
“I know the risks of smoking,” Jon interrupts. Christ, he’s had this conversation too many times. “And I knew the risks of the coffin.”
“Yeah, well obviously you just don’t pay attention. Or care about your own life” Martin’s seeming more like himself, getting worked up over something that shouldn’t even be his business. Thank God for small mercies.
“You can talk,” Jon says, voice brittle and cold.
Martin tenses. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I mean, I’m not the only one here who’s— who’s done something stupid.”
Martin glares at him. “No, you’re not. But at least mine was to save the world—”
“I wanted to save Daisy—”
“And yours was just some convoluted way of punishing yourself for being a monster.”
Jon can’t help it. He flinches. Martin softens. “Jon, I—”
“No,” he interrupts. “Say it. Say I’m a monster.” It feels almost good to finally get it out into the open, to say the word. Monster, monster.
“I’m not—”
“Say it!” He can feel it on his tongue, the Ceaseless Watcher’s influence, make him say that I’m a monster.
“When Jess Tirrell told me someone — something — took her statement, left her in that state, I knew it was you.” The words are forced from Martin’s lips, he can’t do anything to stop them from coming out. It feels good to have it out in the open. “And when she told me what you did, I... I hated it, but I could reconcile it with you. I could reconcile it with the person who was an absolute bastard to me for the first year I knew him; could reconcile it with the person who stalked me and Tim; could reconcile it with the thing Elias described in your statement, the thing that didn’t even care about the human life it was ruining. What do you mean you don’t feel pity?”
Martin’s breathing hard. Jon’s almost elated and he doesn’t know if it’s the Ceaseless Watcher through him or his own relief at not having to dance around it anymore.
“I’m sorry,” Martin says.
“It’s fair,” Jon responds.
“You forced me to say it.” Martin’s got that laugh in his voice, Jon knows it well.
“Next time say it of your own will, then,” Jon says teresely, then softens. “Look, I know it was wrong, but I’m tired of dancing around this. I’m tired of having a conversation that’s just nothing, I’m tired of being with you and it still feeling like you can’t see me, and I can’t see you.
“I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t want to compel you. I just want you to talk to me.”
There’s a pause.
“Fine,” Martin says. “I think you’re stupidly self-sacrificial and have a flagrant disregard for your own safety. I think you think it doesn’t matter to other people, but it does. And I think you think that what I said was the full truth, and it’s not, because you and I both know that thing in your head doesn’t show you all it sees.”
“Fine,” Jon challenges. “What did you think when you found out what I did to — what I did to my victims?” There’s no hint of a compulsion on his tongue, but Jon wants there to be.
“I couldn’t reconcile it with the person who almost died to avenge Sasha. Who died trying to save the world. Who sacrificed bits of himself to save people he didn’t even like. I can’t reconcile it with my view of you.”
Jon is quiet for a long while. Then, finally, he speaks. “I can’t either.” Martin doesn’t respond, so Jon continues. “I know I did it, I know I wanted to do it, I know I want to do it, but at the same time, I find it abhorrent, at the same time, I am wishing and begging for myself to stop. Does that explain anything?”
“Not really,” Martin answers. “But... thanks.”
They both pause, take stock of their surroundings. “We should probably pack away the groceries.”
“Yeah,” Martin agrees. “Still don’t want you smoking.”
Jon sighs. “Martin, if I live long enough to get lung cancer, I’m considering it a win.”
It doesn’t solve anything. They fight often, they don’t talk even more so, but as they unpack the groceries and curl up in bed, they at least feel lighter.

Scp Erased Chapter 8: operation negotiation
Summary: Surrounding the hideaway, Percy and the scp agents tries to get their culprits...with surprising results.
A neon sign hung on the window of the house as the boys took a breather. Car crash sat on the couch, contemplating on how he was going to explain to his parents about the truck.
“My dad's gonna kill me…” Fred groans in his hands. Dark star and Flamethrower were comforting him, patting his back in comfort. Spike and Crusher were holding their weapons–A pair of recolored Banzai blaster peashooters, guarding the living room.
In what is assumed to be a bedroom, Molly sits on the bed while Giovanni thinks of a plan. “Okay think think think,” Giovanni mutters; Pacing back and forth “Those guys are probably from some shadow government group. Which is worse than the regular Government!”
“Boss, Please, you need to calm down.”
“And You, you must have been brainwashed or worse…hypnotized.” Gio whimpers the last part.
Molly sighs in frustration, while she understands his concern for her; she doesn’t want this to escalate even further. After the small tour Dr. Bright gave her, she needed to fix this.
“Giovanni potage!” she said in a firm tone, “I need you to calm down and listen to me…please”
Giovanni stopped his pacing and looked at Molly in shock, did she use his full name?
Meanwhile outside the building the two vehicles parked in front of the building as the groups got out, Dr. Clef walked towards Percy with a glare.
“You got a lot of nerves using your power on us Pal.” He growls
“You used your weapon on a vehicle which had civilians.” Percy replied calmly.
Alto and Percival were glaring at each other, their hands hovering above their weapon in case. The silence was broken when an explosion was heard. They turned to see Dr. Bright holding a rocket launcher, smoke was coming out of it as he had a reassuring look.
“Yep,” He nods, “They’re definitely using SCP-159.”
The building was still intact. Both agents looked at Jack with disbelief.
“Dr. Bright, you could have tested it another way!” Agent Tanner shouts.
The smoke cleared revealing the building unscathed. “We might have to lure them out.” Jack suggests, Putting the launcher away.
Percy went inside the van pulling out a megaphone, she adjusts the volume before clearing her throat.
“This is the sweet jazz police! Please come out with the hostage unharmed and your hands up!”
There was no answer from the other side, Bright grabs the megaphone from her.
“Attention Criminal scum!” He said, “You’re going against a rather powerful group which is a dumb choice on your part so if you don’t want to become dust give us back our stuff and the kid safe and sound.” Dr. Clef pinches the bridge of his nose while agent Tanner looks through his binoculars. From one of the windows he could see Molly holding up a sign.
“We just want 2 talk," it said, written in green crayon.
“Dr. Clef, Dr. Bright, it seems that they want to negotiate.”
Both groups were sitting around the table, the tension and distrust lingered in the air. Bright, Clef, and Percy were on one side while Giovanni and Molly were on the other. His boys and the agents were blocking the way, keeping their guard up.
“HOW DARE YOU STEAL MY MINION FROM ME!” Giovanni said, Slamming his hands on the table.
“Don’t steal from us and we won’t steal from you!” Dr. Bright said back, Clef pinching the bridge of his nose.
Molly pulled Giovanni back, “Boss, please calm down.” She said softly. He grumbles, crossing his arms like a child. “Fine…you’re lucky that bear trap is with me.”
Percy clears her throat to clear the air, making sure that the negotiation doesn’t dissolve into a battle. “It appears that there’s some explaining that needs to be done.” she said. Dr. Clef nods as he looks at Giovanni.
“Mr. Murder, We have a notion that you’ve infiltrated the foundation, stole some of the items, and released dangerous anomalies out into the city.”
He placed down files revealing security cam photos of what seem to be Giovanni and another person with him at site-19, the back of their hair was a lighter pink than Gio’s. Giovanni looked at the photo and then Dr. clef and then the photo again.
“Hmmm…I see now.” Giovanni said, rubbing his chin inquisitively. He doesn't see now. “Well it certainly sounds like something I would totally do…cept for the dangerous part.”
“We’ve already re-captured scp-173 the killer statue but the others won’t be so easy. If you could tell us where they disappear to, it would make the search easier.”
“Uhhh…well the thing is…i don’t know where they are.” Giovanni admits awkwardly. “But me and my boys can help find them.”
Dr. Clef resisted the urge to facepalm himself, he looked at the Blyndeff girl who had a pleading look on her face. She wanted to show them that Giovanni’s not a bad guy. He sighs in defeat.
“Very well then, you and your boys will be an unofficial mobile task force.”
“Oh can we call ourselves the lost boys?” Ben asks
This wasn’t gonna be an easy search.

HxH Hypothesis: Forshadowing ?
Hi! Here we are with the newest theory of HxH that like always is only a tought of mine and we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for the next chapters. So, after clearing up this as always, Here's the new question: Was Fugetsu forshadowed in chapter 159 ? And most important, is her possibile (?) Relationship with Killua forshadowed ? But let's take ot slow. In chapter 159, called Ai Ai the city of love (😏 ?), hisoka takes gon's group to the said city in greed island. Obivously he talks about the many cliché that can happen here But... there's a thing or some that made me think. To the said explaining thing told before, we then saw this panel 👇🏻
Tumblr media
Is oblivious you're all asking " and then ? What's up?" The detail that caught my attention was this one, since Hisoka is talking about how to get along with someone after a meeting in the typical romance comedy style and the fact that while he's saying this we see only Killua. Since is an explanatory thing, it would have made sense to see maybe Gon, killua and someone between bisky or the guy along with them, but instead while hisoka says this, we only see Killua.
Tumblr media
This ( for me at least, don't get me wrong ), has a similarity with another panel concerning Killua, who's this one 👇🏻
Tumblr media
Also later always in chapter 159, we saw a scene that normally wouldn't make sense... if not for a certain detail 👇🏻
Tumblr media
We see hisoka citing a "princess". Now... exactly 190 chapters later... look who gets introduced ?
Tumblr media
Now most of you can call me crazy or just pushing things that don't have a sense but i don't think that all this has been done casually. Now, whenever i read of HxH, i always read that one of the things that gets most of the praising is that is a story that feels like real, inspired by the real world and it's situation, with the characters layered in many ways that it feels so real. Is obivous that HxH mirrors real life in many points, including human relationships. Is oblivious that Togashi sensei is doing a whole Life journey on the series, that reflects everything a normal human goes trought it's life: family, friendship and so on. Killua is ab evident clue of it. He cames from a family that literally used him as only an assassin, the literal projection of what everyone think he was, is and should be. Someone who's life is already "decided" by others. But then, his independance calls in, he rebells, he's want to be the one in control ( sorry but not sorry for the janet Jackson reference) of his life, do what he wants. Then, he leaves home. He makes the first ever human relationship in his life ( Gon Freecss ), and little by little, thanks to him and also others, he starts to connect to his human self . Togashi sensei decided to mix the manga tropes to a common growth journey, developing the plot things, relationships and situations at normal pace like it would happen in real life, and who better than Killua can have this Role of a boy who makes experiences like a normal kid, in a shounen manga world ?We saw his first friend ever ( gon), the older brother side ( alluka), the social side ( wanting to be accepted as a hunter instead of an assassin).Killua's journey is his road to become "human". Now, Killua had to solve many of his flaws and some will still have. And i think that, if this will ever happen of course, Fugetsu will have a Role in this. Killua never knew a normal type of woman ( bisky, Kikyo, Canary, palm, tsubone), and he doesn't have the experience gon has ( the women in greed island 🤣). Also Fugetsu highly probably has spent most of her time with kacho and/or the royal guards inside the royal palace. But, like i've said also in a previous post, i think she will make a good impression on him, as her kindness, humble side and even her logic can surprise him enough. And i think the same will happen to her about him, confident, highly cheeky, and probably also his adult attitude and knowledge will fascinate her enough. This plus the similiarities between each other's lives ( family, situations, mannerisms, ecc.) and situations will make the rest, as the two will slowly know each other, get to see each other's point of view in life and more, opening ti their own problems, childhood, be that part of the world they never get to meet in a direct way, compare the best and worst of each other, make a new acquaintance that maybe will turn the things in an unexpected and surprising way. That will improve also with the world around them, individually and together.
As i always want to say, this is only a tought of mine and we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for the next chapters.

I published chapter 2 of The Dog Star, the full-length sequel to The Nightmare Which Saved the World. “Tidings of Comfort and Joy” acts as a oneshot sequel to them both.
In this chapter: a meeting of the prefects, a cameo by Cedric Diggory, and mostly just exposition. We will return to our regularly-scheduled programming next Tuesday!

The Untamed Dads: A Definitive* Ranking
*I thought about this for twenty minutes and know I'm gonna get blowback. Also no one in Yi City is included because XXC and XY didn’t really give me “dad” vibes so much as “older bro” vibes. Sorry guys.
Lan Wangji: Is he officially Sizhui’s dad or just a “primary caretaker”? I don’t care. He rocked it with the kid. He took a perfectly nice little boy and helped him grow up into a perfectly nice young adult who clearly feels supported and loved! Good job, Wangji! Edges WWX out solely by longevity.
Wei Wuxian: Wasn’t around much for A-Yuan’s childhood, but the fact that A-Yuan looked back on being a little kid and saw so much joy and not the fact that he was in terrible circumstances means that Wei Wuxian is also objectively better than 80% of this list.
Sect Leader Nie: Pretty much nothing is known about him, but he still manages to out-dad most of the other dads since his children don’t hate each other and most of their problems do not involve his parenting.
Wei Changze: We see very little of him and in it he seems nice. Good job Wei Changze, by seeming sweet in one memory you are better than 70% of dads on this show.
A-Yan’s dad: Gave his soul for his daughter. Would be higher up if we knew more about him.
Mianmian’s husband: Has no name and shows up in one scene as a loving father. Still about at the midpoint of this list. Would also be higher up if we knew about him.
Jin Zixuan: Clearly headed towards S-tier dadness, but sadly only got to be a dad for longer than a month.
Sect Leader Ouyang: He made an awesome kid who’s not afraid to call him out. Therefore not a TERRIBLE dad, just a dad with terrible takes.
Wen Ruohan: His dadness made even less of an impression on me than Sect Leader Ouyang’s. Ranked a bit lower because his kids have serious issues. May or may not be his fault. Is kinda an evil overlord.
Jiang Fengmian: Tried. Gave his children a shitton of issues, so I’d say he failed. Badly.
Jin Guangyao: The fact that he probably killed his child and isn’t at the bottom of this list really says something.
Qingheng-jun: If your kids are terrified of becoming you, then congratulations, you’ve failed at parenting forever.
Jin Guangshan: Does this even have to be said?

Hot take: Modern AU versions of Huaisang’s aesthetic usually boil down to “hot girl summer”: crop tops, shorts, wild clothes, etc. Shouldn’t he be “dark academia” instead?
Look at what he usually wears in-canon. There’s no one more wrapped up than he is! You tell me that Modern AU Huaisang would not be into sweaters and jackets and horn-rimmed glasses and know how to accessorize like the best of them.
TL;DR Give me dark academia Huaisang!

BRINGING CLOSURE TO THE JALLIANWALA BAGH MASSACRE OF 1919!
Came across an article informing of the 1st ever official release, in 2021, of names of the people that so sadly 'went away from us' as a result of what's come to be known in history as 'The Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre' of Apr 13, 1919 !
So went to the referred website, & upon cursory glance, the Good Lord & my spirit instantly informed me, that EACH OF THE ~500-550 'martyrs' (this identified as the total number of victims of the tragedy) from that tragic episode, had 999,999 Million Billion Billion……………755 times mentioned Billion Governing Council members in their family lineage, & an angel-lineage number of 1000, moreover with ~9 of their elders in immediate 1st gen family, also carrying the exact same 'blessing' as them!
Bewilderingly, the villain of the piece, Brig. Gen. R.E.H. Dyer, also had the exact same number of 999,999 Million Billion Billion……………755 times mentioned Billion Governing Council members in his family lineage, moreover with ~9 of his elders in immediate 1st gen family, also carrying the exact same 'blessing' as him! But the Good Lord also informs me, that with his last birth's acts as Dyer, all his previous births have NOW forever been nullified!
Hope this bring some closure, to all viewers & readers of one of the cruelest chapters in our textbook of Indian history, over the past century & more.
The Good Lord wishes, that they all live in the peaceful memories of their friends & families, forever, knowing how they went away to a nicer place after all!

Someone Lies About You.
Tumblr media
Lynchburg Criminal Defense AttorneyOften, Criminal charges reside on the lies of those with ulterior motives. This is an unfortunate fact, not only for the accused but, for society as a whole. likewise, if you have been charged with a crime you should call me for a free consultation (434) 660-9701. I am a Lynchburg Criminal Defense Attorney.Much of the information from this article is a review of the book by Professor Justin Brooks “You Might Go to Prison Even Though You’re Innocent” 111 (2023). In Chapter Nine, Professor Brooks discusses how the criminal justice system can be easily manipulated from an alleged victim or witness giving false testimony. Particularly, “Sometimes people lie, and sometimes it leads to innocent people going to prison.” Id. at 159.
"Victims":
Primarily “Recognizing that there are sometimes false rape allegations is in no way inconsistent with also recognizing that rapes are often unreported, uninvestigated, and unprosecuted.” Id. at 159. Unfortunately, alleged victims can lie about an accused for several reason. I have personally witnessed an accuser lying simply because she felt embarrassed about her own conduct one night.
Additionally, recognizing that the people that control most of the narrative in this country have a hard time believing that someone would lie about something soo extremely as to attempt to place another U.S. Citizen in prison. Regardless, I defer to the Lynchburg City Mayor Stephanie Reed's statement that “you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.” Consequently, if you have been charged with a crime you should call me for a free consultation, I am a Lynchburg Criminal Defense Attorney.
youtube
Surprisingly If you have been charged with a crime, do not be surprised when people you have known your whole life start deleting photos of you off their social media, turn on you, begin to "fit" the narrative against you. Thereupon, knowing absolutely nothing about the basis of an accusation at its foundation. Thus, God sees all and in time he will reward those that bare false witness with what they have coming to them. Fortunately, "A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape." - Proverbs 19:5 (King James)
Prosecutors:
Furthermore, Professor Brooks quotes Professor Mark Godsey in his book regarding "Synthesized Testimony." What is synthesized Testimony? “Synthesized testimony occurs when police or prosecutors take witnesses who initially provided details helpful to the suspect and, convinced because of tunnel vision that the witness must be wrong, ask pointed questions of the witness suggesting that his or memory is off. Some witnesses take the cue and begin to question their memory. Sometimes they will change their statements to correspond with what is clear the police believe must have happened.” Id. at 160. Unfortunately, Prosecutors and Police will use this tactic in their investigation. Unquestionably it is nothing short of fraud on the court. Also, they will teach their subordinates to “not write down parts of witness statements.”
I have personally observed a prosecutor in Lynchburg City’s Bethany A.S. Harrsion’s office lie directly to a judges face. I can prove this with court transcripts. This is unacceptable and must be grounds for the elimination of prosecutorial civil suit immunity. Whereas “When prosecutors are confident they are the heroes, and they’re confident they know who the villains are, dishonest behavior can be rationalized in the pursuit of “justice” and filed away as the ends justifying the means.” Id. at 160. Undoubtedly, we live in a nation where narrsistic hubris infects the powerful, this must be brought to heal.
An example Professor Brooks addresses with Prosecutorial misconduct is an example of a prosecutor fabricating evidence that resulted in a 25 year prison sentance for an innocent man where the prosecutor only got 5 days in jail for their fraud on the court.
youtube
Witnesses:
Additionaly, witnesses lie. Unfortunately there is one example of a witness that lied that was manipulated by a member of the bar an Attorney. Specifically, Professor Brooks discuss this in his book on page 141. It is the case of Mike Hanline. Particularly, in that case the prosecutor put someone on the witness stand that was clearly intoxicated. Overall, this is unethical conduct that prosecutors engage in. Obviously, the witness was manipulated to lie and law enforcement did little to curtail the underhanded conduct. Particularly, this conduct was blatant and obvious. Charged with a crime? Call me, I am a Lynchburg Criminal Defense Attorney.
youtube
Snitches:
Sometimes the authorities will use coercive tactics. Unfortunately, snitch’s will get on the witness stand under oath and spew lies about an accused. Often, this can be as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. Subsequently, there is underhanded use of “jail house” snitches where the police put a specific individual in the jail cell with an accused to obtain information. Generally, if you have been detained you should not be talking to anyone about your case other than your attorney in a properly private place. A private place is to protect attorney client privilege. There are innocent United States citizens sitting in prison as a result of prosecutors unethical use of snitches.
Police Officers:
Subsequently, Danny Larsen was the victim of "police officers simply fabricating crimes and ling about the facts to get a conviction." Id. at 148.
youtube
Unfortunaly, sometimes its police officers themselves that will lie directly to a court. What is really scarry, “According to a 2020 report by the National Registry of Exonerations, 54 percent of wrongful convictions involve some form of official misconduct.” Id at 146. This includes, witness tampering, misconduct in obtaining false confessions, fabricating evidence, concealing exculpatory evidence, and misconduct at trial. Kamala Harris’s office is evil. Even after presented blatant evidence of innocence she pursued several wrongful prosecutions in furtherance of her political career. Id. at 149. This is evil there is literally no other way to put it. Bottom line, If you have been charged with a crime, you should  call me, I am a Lynchburg Criminal Defense Attorney.Chris White Lawyer, LLC. is a Lynchburg, Virginia Law Firm available for free consultations in person, via Facetime, Skype, Zoom or phone (434) 660-9701. HIS5067 - Lit Review/Discussion Prep #2
“Our tendency is to turn away from history that is unflattering and uncomfortable, but we cannot afford to ignore the past, even the most upsetting parts of it. We can and must learn from it, even if doing so is painful” (Horton 2006, 36).
The examination of contested histories represents a fraught and complex aspect of historical scholarship. What role should historians, especially public historians and federally funded institutions, take in culturally sensitive topics and what responsibilities should they prioritize in efforts to promote constructive discourse? This week’s readings presented several perspectives on the treatment of difficult pasts and the challenges they pose to public perception and communal understanding – both inside and outside of the academy. In the following post, I explore the scholarship of historians Edward Linenthal, Richard Kohn, and Paul Boyer, as well as Olivia Williams Black, James Oliver Horton, and Thomas Cauvin, noting their perspectives on the lessons learned from critical engagement with controversial subjects in American history and the types of methodologies that may aid in contextualizing such issues for future generations.
In select chapters from History Wars: The Enola Gay and Other Battles for the American Past, Edward Linenthal, Richard Kohn, and Paul Boyer reflect on the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s planned-but-cancelled exhibition of the aircraft known as the Enola Gay. The historic plane was the carrier of the atomic bomb that leveled the city of Hiroshima in August 1945 and effectively ended World War II. Planned in accordance with the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Enola Gay and its accompanying exhibition was controversial from its inception. As explained by the authors, the plane was part of heated debates concerning its contextualization (Linenthal 1996, 20) and generational differences in the perception of World War II (Boyer 1996, 134) – aspects heavily magnified by media influence and special interest groups concerned with governmental power and censorship in the post-Vietnam War-era. Kohn argues that the ultimate cancellation of the exhibition was the result of several factors including its script (Kohn 1996, 142); public attacks on the exhibition by veterans’ organizations (Kohn 1996, 155); “culture wars” (Kohn 1996, 159); the shifting political climate of the 1990s (Kohn 1996, 161); and new leadership at the Smithsonian willing to submit to political and public pressure (Kohn 1996, 162). As Boyer asserts, the controversy exposed a “considerable chasm between the methodology of historians and the way many Americans think about the past, especially the past encompassed by their own experiences and memories (Boyer 1996, 134). The cancelled exhibition therefore highlights critical tensions between commemoration, history, remembrance/interpretation, and fact.
These tensions also permeate the controversial subjects explored by James Oliver Horton’s and Olivia Williams Black’s respective research on the legacy of slavery and the Civil War. As underscored in this post’s opening quote, Horton argues that the public historian (and by extension public institutions) must take a central role in telling the story of complex, traumatic events such as slavery. “History must be taught not only in the academy but in the variety of nonacademic settings where Americans go and learn” (Horton 2006, 36), because “the vast majority of Americans react strongly to the topic [of slavery], but few know much about it” (Horton 2006, 37). Informed collaboration and responsible education are key, and Black’s scholarship (“The 150-Year War”) shows how these factors impact the civic trust needed to engage with these topics at national monuments and historic sites. Focusing on the commemorative, anniversary events associated with Fort Sumter during the Civil War, Black demonstrates how the National Park Service’s (NPS) interpretation of the Civil War is constructed by contemporary racial politics (Black 2016, 149). She suggests that these sites must be honest about the role that government agencies like the NPS have had in racialized narratives about the past (Black 2016, 165).
Such “honesty” requires not just acknowledgement but a willingness to confront and listen to marginalized voices. Thomas Cauvin’s examination of oral history – “a method of gathering, preserving and interpreting the voices and memories of people, communities, and participants in past events” (Cauvin 2016, 290) — presents a potential avenue for engagement in critical conversations. Although oral history is often challenged for its reliance on human memory and interpretation, it redefines the nature of authority and seeks to promote participatory interaction. As such, oral history can play a key role in elevating the social understanding of and appreciation for difficult pasts, providing an alternative for thoughtful, reflective engagement with contested histories and the communities they impact.

The Fall of Gondolin (pt1)
“But Tuor looked upon the walls of stone, and the uplifted towers, upon the glistening pinnacles of the town, and he looked upon the stairs of stone and marble, bordered by slender balustrades and cooled by the leap of threadlike waterfalls seeking the plain from the Fountains of Amon Gwareth, and he fared as one in some dream of the Gods, for he deemed not such things were seen by men in the visions of their sleep, so great was his amaze at the glory of Gondolin.” (Book of Lost Tales, Volume 2 page 159)
The Fall of Gondolin (Chapter 2 in Epic sl- 'What if') Idly Legolas made his way from the Festival. Tarin Austa, the Gates of Summer celebrations were coming to a close. Long had been the laughter, the merrymaking and dancing and now a time of reflection was upon one and all. A time of silence, in the lead up to dawn; a time where no one would speak from Midnight to daybreak, but as the first rays of dawn broke the night sky, one and all would gather upon the eastern wall, to burst forth in ancient songs; giving thanks for the year that had passed and the new one coming.
In silence he passed others, watching as they hung the silver lamps and jewels of many colours from the low laying eaves of trees, entwining their fine delicate thread carefully through the branches; as not to mar a single newly formed leaf. It made him smile. For Gondolin was fairer than any other town or city one could ever imagine, and yet with the approaching dawn; as the first ray of light crossed over the snow-peaked caps of the Encircling Mountains, it would take even the coldest of hearts breath away. Such was its divine beauty and grace. Many a heartless Dignitary or even the most seasoned Warriors had stumbled to kneel, weeping freely at its indescribable beauty, and he was no different.
Legolas’s footfalls made no sound as he took the steps in twos making his way up, and onto the eastern wall. The night sky still lay shrouded in a velvet blanket of the darkest blue, laced together with a million stars that reflect the true beauty of Varda.
He was alone, alone for now with his thoughts and melody of the softly trickling waterfalls. Closing his eyes, he let the peace of his surrounding flow through him.  He had missed this! Missed Gondolin more than he had thought ever possible! Having been sent here upon the cusp of his adulthood to train; glean knowledge in battle and strategies’ befitting for his title and linage by his Ada Thranduil, and G dad Oropher. For they were Sindarin royalty whom then, had resided with Thingol Greycloak; the Elven King of Doriath within his underground city, Menegroth, the city of a thousand caves.
None of that mattered now. Time had moved on and so had his Family. Establishing a safe hold, their own underground city within the north-eastern end of the Forrest of Mirkwood, where they ruled over the Wood Elves, the Silvan Elves of Telerin descent…
He wasn’t sure how long he has closed his eyes, for a time had no real consequence. A hundred years could pass and be, but a moment to pause and reflect for his kin. It was a bittersweet luxury he had never taken any joy in. For short and beautifully sweet were the lives of his mortal friends and though like leaves, some danced a little longer upon the cold Autumn breeze, they all eventually came to pass; falling gently upon the Forrest floor.
He was no longer alone. Others had gathered. Their gaze cast silently out across the eastern Mountains watching the breaking of a strange red hue that tipped the Mountain peaks crimson like blood. Swiftly it seemed to gather within the far off crevices pooling to spill over and trickle its way down across the craggy Mountainside’s.  And as he stepped forward to lean upon the smooth warm balustrade, he heard it. The soft and distant throws of drums…Unmistakeable upon their intent.
Unforgiving in their rhythm, they were the drums of an army. The drums of war! Legolas’s brow furrowed as he leaned forward over the balustrade with the soft mumbles of worded curiosity resonating within his ears from those beside him. And as the glow grew greater still; their doubt turned to dread and panic for the night sky turned red with the approaching fire serpents of Melko’s design.
Swiftly Legolas pushed himself back from the balustrade and turned on heel calling forth” Sound the alarms!  Alert every House! War has come to Gondolin, Melko is upon us!!” Already the mountainsides were cloaked with the plain riders, Goblins and Orc’s upon the foulest of Warg’s, Creatures half-bat, half-man ran or flew beside them and then... breaching the Mountain peaks charged the Trolls and the Balrogs with wings of flame and smoke! And at that moment, Legolas despaired!
How many lives would be lost this day? How many families forever broken. How could they even hope to win against such a force? Yet try they must! For no known allies were riding to Gondolin’s aid, and if they were, unless they were already close by, they would never reach the city on time.
Purposely Legolas breathed in deep, sweeping his despair aside to focus on the fate ahead. Exhaling as he stepped forward, pushing down upon the ball of his right foot to leap nimbly up and onto the fine marble balustrade; as with a shrug, his bow travelled the length of his arm to rest within the grasp of his left hand.
Fluently he raised his right hand across his shoulder while he adjusted his stance: pulling forth an arrow from his quiver and set it to the bow's string and raised his bow. Pulling taunt its string, to rest momentarily beside his right cheek while his sharp elven sights took aim. Trailing his target across the sky he let his arrow fly.   He did not wait to see if it had hit its mark, the screech of the whelp fire serpent plummeting towards the ground was confirmation enough!  Instead, Legolas turned, darting nimbly forward along the thin balustrade with his cloak flaying out around him; to search for higher perch upon which he could secure another target…
